  • E-waste a major problem, says Canon

E-waste a major problem, says Canon

Japanese multinational corporation, Canon Incorporation, has said electronic waste or management is a problem in Nigeria.

It however said it has developed startegise to manage the menace in the country. The original equipment manufacturer (OEM) said it is has short, medium and long-term strategies for the local market.

Canon specialises in the manufacture of imaging and optical products, including cameras, camcorders, photocopiers, steppers, computer printers and medical equipment.

According to experts, Nigeria  generates over 1.1 million tons in e-waste from the consumption of local and imported electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) that have ceased to function.

The Sales and Marketing Director, Canon Central and North Africa, Mr Somesh Adukia, who spoke on the sidelines of the launch of its My Naija campaign in Lagos, he said the company has started a pilot programme in Cote d’Ivoire, adding that lessons learned from that would be replicated in Nigeria.

He said: “We are starting a pilot project in Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) market and in this market; we are looking at how the various consumables stored up in cartridges, which had been used and are actually hurting the environment.

“So, we are trying to see how we can conserve them for the future and take care of the environment. It is a pilot project started in Ivory Coast and upon its success; it would be extended to Nigeria and other markets.”

He said the firm has short-, medium- and long-term strategies for the local market, including strategies to boost job creation and transfer of knowledge to locals.

Adukia said: “The short term plan is to gain channel penetration because we feel we have good team and good set of distributors. The medium term plan is to grow beyond Lagos and expand into big cities, such as Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and so many other places. We already have two of our people in Abuja and Port Harcourt, but we are going to expand our operations in other cities.

“On a long-term basis, we want to build our brand awareness through this kind of campaign and that is why I said we are not going to have small boom and disappear and hence our campaign My Naija is going to last for at least a year.”

Adukia said there are many ways the company has helped in creating both direct and indirect jobs in the country.

“Directly, we first employed one person as the country’s manager as we opened our local office. As our business grew, we appointed six additional managers within one year. Thereafter, we appointed a local business development manager for developing the business. As our business is growing, we are employing a lot of Nigerians.

“There are a lot of jobs being created by Canon indirectly because more business means more jobs will be available in the market. We are doing a lot of marketing events and so the marketing agencies get business. I was in a road show in Computer Village and I was thrilled with the kind of promotions they were having through the agencies. They are not Canon workers but today they are getting jobs because Canon was doing this kind of marketing campaign.”

Adukia said the company plans to create employment opportunities and work in line with its corporate philosophy, which is living together  for common goals.

He said the company has taken a big step towards combating its challenge of brand awareness through the My Naija launched in Lagos.

According to him, the company has been able to combat the challenges of distribution alignment and service network in the last two years, adding that the objectives of the company is to provide Nigerians the source of products.

Harness ICT for Growth in Economy, SystemSpecs Tells FG

For Nigeria to fully harness its potential among communities of economic nations and foster citizenry prosperity, the Federal Government must realign its economic restructuring plan and national resource recovery schemes in lieu of global best practices of digital economy and tech driven streaks.

Chief Executive Officer of SystemSpecs, John Obaro who made this submission at the recent Kano-Lagos Economic and Investment Summit, reiterated that digital integration is key for the nation’s recovery from recession.

According to Obaro, “ICT generally can best be summarised as efficiency or optimisation of processes. To get out of the recession, we need to look at our processes and how they can be reviewed and optimised.”

According to Obaro it high time government payment scheme at all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) be automated for seamless engagement with the masses and investors and invariably reduced the chances of manipulation and tendencies of corrupt practices.

If this is fully integrated in the state government scheme across the federation, Nigerians would begin to feel the impact of government in the society as leakages would be stifled and outflow would be vehemently controlled.

However there is the need for qualitative education for a digital Nigeria to be achieve and Obaro opined change in technical education scheme for Nigerian youths.

He explained, “A lot of things are changing. For instance, there are now robots in the world. Instead of teaching people carpentry for instance, teach them how to build robots that will do carpentry. It’s a high-level skill but if you don’t do it other countries will.”

“The kind of skills that most people need is just to help them be comfortable with technology; to be able to use it. However, there are people in the core tech areas, who have to develop the tools that will aid technology enhancement. There are also people in the political class that need to be ICT friendly for us to be able to have a proper ecosystem.

“If the legislative framework cannot put in place a structure for the development of ICT, the professionals will find it difficult to stand on their own.”

  • Oracle expands service level agreements

Oracle said it has expanded the breadth and depth of its enterprise service level agreements (SLAs), delivering a superior experience to customers and help enterprises that want to shift critical workloads to the cloud.  Building on the strength of its recently announced, industry-leading 99.995 per cent availability guarantee for Oracle Autonomous Database, the firm unveiled the industry’s first end-to-end financially backed cloud warranty for Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS).  With these comprehensive  SLAs, Oracle is now the only cloud infrastructure provider, offering guaranteed service levels across performance, manageability and availability: the three key characteristics defining how enterprises measure cloud infrastructure providers.

“No cloud provider in the world can match what Oracle guarantees. Our competitors offer narrow commitments and countless exclusions in fine print while Oracle’s SLAs deliver an industry first: guaranteed performance, manageability and availability in the cloud,” its President of Product Development, Thomas Kurian, said in a statement.

Enterprise customers require critical business applications to perform at consistent and reliable levels.  For example, they need to know back office applications are not going to bog down as they are trying to close the quarter or doing strategic analysis. In addition, enterprises expect to have the ability to immediately add resources if they need extra compute power for urgent business intelligence or to handle spikes in demand.

Oracle’s new SLAs are an integral part of the company’s strategy to deliver the best cloud infrastructure for enterprise production workloads. These industry-first SLAs provide reassurance to customers, who want to shift workloads to the cloud and require not only continual availability, but also consistent performance and the ongoing ability to manage and modify the cloud infrastructure that runs their mission-critical applications and databases.

  • NCC hopeful on 30% broadband rollout

NCC hopeful on 30% broadband rollout

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has expressed optimism on achieving the 30 per cent penetration in the country targeted by the National Broadband Plan.

Currently, experts say the country’s broadband penetration is largely driven by the availability and relative affordability of mobile phones while the fixed remains in limbo. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has put fixed broadband penetration in the country at a miserable 0.01 per cent, rubbishing the 21 per cent being celebrated in the country.

But the Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of NCC, Prof Garba Dambatta, said the target remained a focal point for the regulator. He said: “Our target to achieve 30 per cent broadband rollout in the country by end of this year 2018 remains in focus.”

According to Dambatta, there is no doubt that ICT is pivotal to the growth and sustainability of macro-economic activities while stability and operational integrity as a growth vehicle are critical to success.

“Communications being the backbone on which that growth will leverage, the sector and its regulator have to lead in ways and means that will build the confidence needed to drive the volume of investment and capital that will be needed to not only ensure attainment, but sustain it.

“Communications have made great and impressive strides in our national economic landscape over the past 16 years, but given advances in communications innovations and their impact on the sector, the needs of society for communications have become more imperative than they were in 2001. The advent of broadband, LTE (long term evolution) and Internet of Things (IoT) have made the need for focused development more urgent than ever.

“Having noted that communication governance is international in scope and dimension and that the fund and capital for it are dynamic, it calls, therefore, for governance practices that are wholly in alignment to international benchmarks, in other words international best practices,” he said during his opening remarks at a sensitisation forum on corporate governance code in Kano at the weekend.

According to him, ICT sector is pivotal to the overall attainment of national developmental objectives, hence the need for the sector to lead in integrity, transparency, accountability and ethically, which are the values espoused and promoted by the principles of the code.

“In appreciation of the relevance of our sector to the attainment of those objectives, the regulator is committed to deliver regulatory excellence and facilitate operational efficiency, geared towards making the sector attractive to drive the level of investment and capital inflow needed.

“Current evaluation report of the state of the industry suggests that whilst not understating the impact of other external and fiscal issues confronting the sector, that most challenges negatively affecting the health of operators in the sector today are attributable to poor governance issues.

“The Commission is determined to provide needed regulatory interventions to ensure that the sector plays effectively the enabling role it is mandated to create by the Act, the NCA 2003. It is currently rejigging its regulatory oversights in the areas of ensuring that consumers get cost effective value for money spent on telecommunication services; and that service delivery by providers are qualitative and efficient.
