  • Five reasons why you should join a tech hub

Five reasons why you should join a tech hub

    Sylvester Martins

Many of the world’s most significant technological breakthroughs came about as a result of a collaboration between talented people.

No man is an Island. Two heads are better than one. Collaboration is key. Teamwork makes the dream work.

Pick your preferred phrase from the above, they all mean the same thing, and most importantly, they are all true. They especially ring true in the tech world where progress is achieved in partnership and cooperation.

This is why hubs fulfil such a vital function in the space. Hubs bring together like-minded people and foster practical learning, vital collaboration as well as healthy competition.

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has in the past year of his assumption of office gave tech hubs a pride of place in his programmes.

Three special-purpose IT Hubs have been deployed in the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), and Federal University of Technology (FUT) Minna respectively.

In furtherance of his resolve to spur IT development for teeming youths across the country, 2000 laptops were provided to institutions across all geopolitical zones. As if that is not enough, NITDA held an online innovation challenge titled “Nigeria’s COVID-19 Innovation Challenge” were three winners emerged, winning cash prizes of N1m, N750.000, N500,000 respectively.

Apart from NITDA’s tech hubs in the aforementioned institutions, the Federal Government is also investing in tech hubs across the six geo-political zones. Not many know the benefits of joining a tech hub. Here are a few reasons why you should:

    · Energy is infectious

Tech hubs can be some of the most high energy places in the world and if you are in one, some of that energy will certainly rub off on you.

Hubs are similar to beehives. Everyone is there to work and everyone is in go mode.

From ideation sessions in the conference rooms to heated intellectual disagreements by the water dispenser, the mental exercise is constant.

Being in an environment like this will give you lots of creative energy to play off of.

    · They are great places to network

Chances are that you will meet a future collaborator, client, vendor, employer, or employee at a hub.

Through consistent interaction with your hub members, you will be able to form friendships and forge alliances through which you can earn money, referrals, or both.

    · Share Problems. Solve Problems

Your greatest asset at your hub is not the dependable WiFi or the constant electricity.

It is the fellow professional sitting across from you. It is the experienced programmer sitting beside you. It is the talented graphic designer you bump into on your way every morning.

Being part of a hub allows you to pick the brains of your peers to share as well as gain valuable insight from multiple perspectives

    · Expand your horizon

Working in the midst of diversely skilled professionals can only rub off positively on you. Observing what other specialists do, how they do it, and why they do it will help you develop an appreciation for what they do and an understanding of what they need.

Not only will this help you become a better team player, but it will also help you become a better team manager and a better contractor to your clients.

Consequently, you will develop into a more well-rounded professional and business person.

    · New opportunities and new skills

Learning takes several forms in the hub. You could learn from your peers’ mistakes, benefit from the guidance from more experienced hub members, or receive training from hub facilitators.

IT is the new global money-spinner and if you are a tech enthusiast like me, you will hurry now to make hay while the sun shines!

    By Lucas Ajanaku

A firm, FirstFounders Inc. said it has secured $3million finance deal with foreign funders to develop local tech start-ups in the country.

Its Chief Digital Strategist/CEO, Mr David Lanre Messan, who spoke during a virtual meeting to unveil two start-ups, Waste Pushers and Insights Fashion Co. Limited, in Lagos, lamented the dearth of local financiers for innovation at the bottom of the pyramid in the country.

He said the firm, which is a fundraising intermediary company dedicated to helping digital entrepreneurs raise funds across the world, will soon sign the agreement that will culminate in the release of the funds which will help raise the next generation of techpreneuers in the country.

“We are committed to helping your startup or growth-stage company speed up the process of fundraising, reduce risk, and getting you better deals while you are diligently running your business.  Whether you want to raise equity-based financing, grants or debt financing, we got you and will provide the advisory support, roadmaps and contacts you need to achieve your fundraising goals.

“Our drive to democratise access to finance keeps us connected to over 2600 private investors, angel investors, Global Venture Capitalists and Debt Financing Companies spread across 20 countries,” Messan said.

He said the two start-ups got the finance from a Brazilian investor and a World Business Angels Investment Forum (WBAF) Brazil International Partner, Mr Juliano Lopes Almeida, to develop their innovations and grow them to profitability.

According to him, the firm has established relationship with about 2000 investors globally, arguing that unemployment continues to widen in the country because of the emphasis on funding the big companies. “People are not getting jobs because emphasis is on big companies.

If government focuses on small businesses, it will solve the problem of unemployment in the country,” he said, adding that the firm was targeting investing in 100 businesses in the next one year.

He said the Innovation Fund of the United Kingdom (UK) was already working to fund businesses in the country by giving them between 5,000 and 25,000 pounds.

Also speaking, Almeida said he invests in to startups that are focused in solving social problems, stressing the need to develop end encourage more social entrepreneurs. Decided to t invest in Waste Pushers owned Mr Danyaro Ibrahim,  and 2828 Insights Fashion Co. Ltd owned by Miss Lucci Nneoma Anyim, because the two are focused on tackling social problems.

He expressed love for Africa and its people and hoped that in the future he could be connected with more start-ups. He stressed the need for money to go round, adding that the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic has more than ever strengthened the need.

Almeida said Silicon Valley should not be an exclusive reserve of the United States (US), adding that more of it should established across the world to share the prosperity that the deployment of technology brings to the world.

Lucci and Danyaro expressed gratitude to Almeida for the funding.

Danyaro said waste management remained a problem in developing world such as Nigeria, and urged the government to tackle the menace of double taxation and double levies. He however commended the Federal Government for signing into law, a new Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) for opening a new vista of opportunity for small businesses and also stressed the need for government to remove all the obstacles that stifle business growth.

Lucy also sought funding. She recalled going to the Bank of Industry (BoI) when she saw media hype but was disappointed that they said they couldn’t fund her because of the size of the cash she asked for.

She sought transparency in the disbursement of the cash because the fundings published in the newspapers are not getting to the targets.

Can  He has therefore urged the Federal Government to declare October 1, 2020 Nigeria’s technology independence day.

Ekeh, who spoke during a virtual chat with technology correspondents, said he based his recommendation on the giant strides recorded by the country in the area of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

‘‘October 1st 2020 is traditionally Nigeria’s Independence Day. It is a day that commemorates Nigeria’s emergence as a sovereign state. Considering the massive strides recorded so far in our journey to technological emancipation, the Federal Government should strongly consider declaring October 1st Nigeria’s technology independence day

‘‘I have often said it that no country achieves true independence without a level of technological independence. The time has come for Nigeria to boldly emerge as a technology force on the continent and globally; to make the right investments and critical positioning necessary for securing our collective future in the 21st Century,’’ he said.

Ekeh who commended the Federal Government for the greater focus on technology and knowledge development, cited   the renaming of the Ministry of Communications and its subsequent enhancement as a credible institution for anchoring the country’s renewed approach to the emerging knowledge economy now brought to the front burner by COVID-19.

‘‘I commend the Federal Government for enhancing the Ministry of Communications which, by its current status as the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the appointment of a thorough-bred professional in Dr. Isa Pantami to oversee its affairs, is now eminently equipped to deliver on Nigeria’s march to digital emancipation.

‘‘It has indeed been a journey of immense leaps and bounds, right from the time of Dr. Omobola Johnson through the era of  Adebayo Shittu and now to the current achievements being recorded under Dr. Pantami.

‘‘Nevertheless, there is a lot more to be done, especially in leapfrogging our prevailing developmental challenges by leveraging the power of technology, as is the case in advanced climes, to unleash the abundant skilled and modern human capital that Nigeria is potentially known for, create quality jobs and unlock a certified future for the huge population of energetic youths; while reducing sophisticated crimes – we have now seen a lot of women also indulging in to survive.’’

The Zinox chief reiterated the country’s pre-eminence as a key driver of technology in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, even as he urged the government to act now.

‘‘Today, a lot of our kids are out of school as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic – a development that should not be the case, especially considering our capacity as a technology-compliant nation in finding a solution to bridge the gap.

‘‘At this level of our development, Nigeria should be regarded as a global digital giant. We have the means, the talent, the human capital and the innate intelligence to make it happen. With the government taking the step of making critical investments in technology, it is only a matter of time before Nigeria starts raising tech billionaires that would rival the likes of Jeff Bezos and Jack Ma,’’ he said.
