Ariston Water Heaters unveils new brand communication campaign

    Okwy Iroegbu-Chikezie

Ariston Thermo Group has premiered its global campaign ‘The Ariston Comfort Challenge’ in Nigeria, which highlights its global mission of bringing sustainable comfort, even where it seems impossible to find.

The Ariston Comfort Challenge focused on ensuring thermal comfort could reach anywhere in the world. Through this mission, Ariston has donated a warm shelter to a group of scientists from the University of Copenhagen involved in climate change studies in the remote and icy Island of Disko, in Greenland (Arctic).

The Ariston Comfort Zone, an innovative modular home, was shipped to and assembled—for the first time— in Disko Island, Greenland, Disko Island is one of the coldest regions in the world and before this time, it proved near impossible for the scientists to stay on the island for more than a few days due to the harsh weather conditions. This unfriendly weather becomes even more hostile during the winter months and interrupts research work.

Speaking during a virtual media parley held in Lagos recently, Mr. Gaurav Bisaria, the Director, Central Africa, Ariston Thermo Group, explained that a safe and sheltered house, heated and provided with hot water for the maximum comfort even during Polar winters would have not been possible without their commitment to quality.

Bisaria noted that the success of the Ariston Comfort Challenge ‘Greenland Mission’ is another proof of the company core value of superior quality of Ariston products, which could be seen in the efficiency of the output of the product even in the extreme weather condition.

“We are really glad about launching this amazing campaign on the 90th anniversary of Ariston Thermo. The Group is a global leader in thermal comfort solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial spaces. Our new breed of water heaters introduced into the Nigerian market will help us embrace a completely new and different way to bring our purpose and mission to you,” he said.

Bisaria explained that in order for the team of scientists to carry through their mission of collecting and examining samples in Disko Island, they needed an innovative infrastructure to act as a stable base against the icy island.

Ariston rose to the challenge and selected three of the best installers from all over the world, who accepted to dive together into the unknown to deliver and assemble a warm and innovative modular home specifically developed as an energy-efficient, sustainable solution able to endure the most extreme climate conditions.

He stressed further that through the Challenge, Ariston sought to demonstrate how through its dedication to product quality Ariston Product’s continue to meet the demanding expectation set them to even in the harshest conditions.

Online Betting Safety-How to Avoid the Risks When Betting Online

With technological advances, online betting has become the most used form of betting. Gamblers have turned to online casinos like Betway to place their bets. Betting online involves money. Anything that involves money and personal details being kept online is risky. The best thing is that you can avoid these risks by being very careful. Here are some of the precautions that you need to take when betting online:

    Research on the Betting Site

Before you start betting, make sure you have done thorough research on the site you want to use. There are very many sites that are not legit. You can know whether a site is legit by observing the following:

    • Find out whether the site is licensed. A legit site is licensed and also regulated by a reputable governing body. Avoid sites that are not controlled by anybody.
    • Check on the online reviews of the website. If the site has got negative reviews, avoid it. A legit site will always have positive reviews.
    • Observe the duration in which the site has been in business. A legit site will have operated for a more extended period.

    Avoid giving out Personal Information

Do not give out some of your personal data when signing up in the betting sites. Some sites are fond of giving out your email addresses to other websites that may spam you with lots of messages. Some of the delicate information that you should not give out is like your bank details. A legit site like Betway will keep such information confidential.

    Use a reputable site

A reputable site will not give out your details because they keep all information secure. They use encryption technologies to keep user information safe. Although not a 100 % secure, the information will be a bit secure compared to those in an unreliable site.

Hacking can take place even in a reputable site. You can prevent your information from being stolen by using strong passwords, changing the passwords frequently, using security questions and answers that are not common, and not sharing your bank details via email or Skype.

    Bet Responsibly

Betting responsibly is very important because it will help you avoid getting addicted and losing money not budgeted for. You need to decide on a budget. Don’t just spend money on online casinos like Betway without having a plan. The amount you choose to bet with should be what you are ready to lose. • WhatsApp limits message forwarding

    WhatsApp limits message forwarding

    Our Reporter

With billions of people unable to see their friends and family due to COVID-19, people are relying on WhatsApp more than ever to communicate. People are talking to doctors, teachers, and isolated loved ones via WhatsApp during this crisis.

Last year the social platform introduced users to the concept of messages that have been forwarded many times. These messages were labeled with double arrows  to indicate they did not originate from a close contact. In effect, these messages are less personal compared to typical messages sent on WhatsApp.

“We are now introducing a limit so that these messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time.

“As a private messaging service, we’ve taken several steps over the years to help keep conversations intimate. For example, we previously set limits on forwarded messages to constrain virality. At the time, we saw a 25 per cent decrease in total message forwards globally,” the social platform said.

It said not all messages forwarded are bad because many users forward helpful information, as well as funny videos, memes, and reflections or prayers they find meaningful. “In recent weeks, people have also used WhatsApp to organise public moments of support for frontline health workers.

However, we’ve recently seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding which users have told us can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation. We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.

“In addition to this change, we are working directly with NGOs and governments, including the World Health Organisation and over 20 national health ministries, to help connect people with accurate information.

Together these trusted authorities have sent hundreds of millions of messages directly to people requesting information and advice.

You can learn more about these efforts, as well as how to submit potential myths, hoaxes and rumors to fact checking organisations, on our Coronavirus Information Hub,” it added.

It said it believes that now more than ever people need to be able to connect privately. “Our teams are hard at work to keep WhatsApp running reliably during this unprecedented global crisis. We’ll continue to listen to your feedback and improve ways for people to share with each other on WhatsApp,” it added.

  • Group faults link of 5G to COVID-19

Group faults link of 5G to COVID-19

The claim in some quarters about the availability of 5G services in the country, its cabling and the link of the technology with COVID-19 pandemic is baseless, a technology industry reporters have said.

Acting under the aegis of Nigeria Information Technology Reporters  Association (NITRA),  the group said rather than threatening human health, 5G is expected to connect people, things, data, applications, transport systems and cities in smart networked  ecosystem.

Its Chairman, Mr. Chike Onwuegbuchi, in a statement, the technology will easily transport huge data faster, reliably connect an extremely large number of devices and process very high volumes of data with minimal delay.

“5G technologies are expected to support applications, such as smart homes and buildings, smart cities, 3D video, work and play in the cloud, remote medical services, virtual and augmented reality, and massive machine-to-machine communications for industry automation. 3G and 4G networks face challenges in supporting these services,” he explained.

He said reliable authorities and experts on the issue, such as the International Telecommunications Union (ITU),  the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the supervisory ministries, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and the Ministry of Health should be relied upon for authentic information.

He said the WHO has stated that viruses cannot travel on radio waves or mobile networks and that COVID-19 is a respiratory disease.

“ITU plays a leading role in managing the radio spectrum and developing globally applicable standards for IMT-2020. Its activities support the development and implementation of international regulations and standards to ensure that 5G networks are secure, interoperable, and that they operate without causing or receiving harmful interference to or from adjacent services,” he said.

Citing WHO, the statement said “to date, and after much research performed, no adverse health effect has been causally linked with exposure to wireless technologies”.

WHO is further conducting a health risk assessment from exposure to radio frequencies, covering the entire radio frequency range, including 5G, to be published by 2022. It said it would review scientific evidence related to potential health risks from 5G exposure as the new technology is deployed, and as more public health-related data become available.

WHO established the International Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Project in 1996. The project investigates the health impact of exposure to electric and magnetic fields in the frequency range 0-300 GHz and advises national authorities on EMF radiation protection.

On exposure levels, the WHO further establishes that currently, exposure from 5G infrastructures at around 3.5 GHz is similar to that from existing mobile phone base stations. “With the use of multiple beams from 5G antennas, exposure could be more variable as a function of location of the users and their usage. Given that the 5G technology is currently at an early stage of deployment, the extent of any change in exposure to radiofrequency fields is still under investigation.”

The telecoms trade body, GSMA said the new limits showed the safety of current and future technology. “Importantly, the health risk assessment is unchanged. The review found no established health risks to anyone, including children, using mobile phones or living near base stations,” GSMA said.

A GSMA report reiterates that 5G adoption would grow as its benefits become visible. It points to the slow pace of awareness around the technology, suggesting that even increased knowledge about the usefulness need not translate into actions to upgrade or even intentions to do so.

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), which was set up in 1992 to assess the impact of electromagnetic and acoustic waves on people and the environment, said its current guidelines are mostly appropriate for the 5G era.

Medical health specialist have also lent their voices to the issue. Condemning the theories as “the worst kind of fake news”, National Medical Director of NHS England, Professor Steve Powis said: “I’m absolutely outraged, absolutely disgusted, that people would be taking action against the very infrastructure that we need to respond to this health emergency.”

Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Bristol, Professor Adam Finn, in his position said: “The internet connections these networks give us are one of the most important tools we are using to co-ordinate our response to the epidemic and efforts to do research to overcome it.”

Also, professor of microbial pathogenesis at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Prof Brendan Wren, said a connection between the phone masts and the virus would be “both a physical and biological impossibility.”

While applauding the people’s need for caution, Mr. Onwuegbuchi called on Nigerians to embrace new technologies as a means of improving the economy and joining global competitiveness.

He reiterated the motive behind the laying of fibre optic cables by MNOs, saying that the new cables are very necessary to improve the quality of service of telecommunication services, especially at the period when the networks are in increased usage. He further explained that the timing was to enable the MNOs work feely without obstructing traffic or easy movement of people.

He stressed that the laid fibre optic cables were for 3G and 4G services and cannot be used for 5G service yet because the operators have not been issued spectrum for the service.

While pledging support for the NCC and the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy in their bid to position Nigeria among the Digitally Innovative nations, NITRA urged Nigerians to look beyond the rumours surrounding the 5G technology and support the federal government if, and when they eventually choose to adopt the technology.

“Just like the NCC and the Ministry said, before the country will adopt 5G technology, they will consult all stakeholders, and research further into the implications of the technology,” Mr. Onwuegbuchi encouraged.

The Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) is the umbrella association for information and communication technology reporters in Nigeria.

  • ‘How to keep devices virus-free’

    ‘How to keep devices virus-free’

    By Busola Aro

With no reliable data for COVID-19 available yet, it is always best to be extra cautious

An security firm, Kaspersky has  provided tips on how to keep mobile devices ‘virus-free’.

“Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, it is frightening to think how much bacteria lives on our personal mobile devices.

And with the Coronavirus able to survive at room temperature and remain infectious on metal, glass, ceramic, and plastic for several days, it becomes essential to follow effective disinfection protocol,” Senior Security Researcher for the Global Research and Analysis Team at Kaspersky, Maher Yamout, said.

The virus can get onto a phone or tablet in two ways: either in tiny droplets when an infected person coughs nearby, or from your own hands after touching door handles, ATM buttons, and the like.

Fortunately, unless a person hand their mobile device to someone who is infected to cough and splutter all over it, the probability of infection by airborne route is low.

Transmission by hand depends on the duration of contact and varies for different microorganisms. But with no reliable data for COVID-19 available yet, it is always best to be extra cautious.

“If you must go to the shop for essential goods, it is imperative to disinfect your phone when you return home. There are several common household products that can deal with the Coronavirus effectively – ethanol (C2H5OH), isopropyl alcohol (C3H7OH), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and sodium hypochlorite (NaClO),”  Yamout added.

Isopropyl alcohol is considered the least harmful to the oleophobic coating that allows fingers to slide over the screen without covering it in fingerprints. So, use it if you can (as spray or wet wipes).

Ethanol and hydrogen peroxide should be considered a backup if nothing else is available. With frequent use, these products can easily ruin the oleophobic coating. Even once might be enough, it depends on the coating.

As for concentration, the optimal to go for is approximately 70-80 per cent. Purer alcohol evaporates too quickly for best results. The disinfecting solution must sit on the surface for about a minute. A lower concentration is less efficient in killing viruses.

People should therefore not rely on vodka for example instead of ethyl alcohol. Even glass cleaner is not as effective as isopropyl alcohol given it has a considerably lower alcohol content.

It is also critical to not pour the disinfectant into the connectors, speakers, and other openings in the smartphone, even if it is waterproof.

Rather, take a cotton pad, soak it in the liquid, and apply it to all sides of the device. There is no need to press hard, just carefully and thoroughly wipe the whole surface.

People should apply the same disinfection regiment to any other gadgets they use in public places. These can include tablets, laptops, smartwatches, bracelets, headphones, and so on.

However, always check the product Website whether the manufacturer has any recommendations as to which substances are best suited for the device cleaning and how to apply them.

  • ‘Cybercrooks exploit people working from home’

‘Cybercrooks exploit people working from home’

The outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and embrace of social distancing to reduce its spread has led to the concept of people working from home (WfH). Experts say the pandemic has created a ‘perfect storm’ for cybercriminals to exploit people working from home. They have also noticed a significant increase in security threats or attacks,   LUCAS AJANAKU reports.

Employees unfamiliar with remote work can be particularly   vulnerable.

As the country grapples with the burgeoning coronavirus pandemic, cybersecurity experts are warning that employees working from home are increasingly being targeted by aggressive cybercriminals trying to capitalise on their unfamiliarity with remote work.

The dark web is buzzing with coronavirus-related activity, experts said, with hackers selling other hackers COVID-19 scam “kits” complete with fraudulent email templates to target workers at home.

“Hackers are trying to exploit this moment in a time when everyone’s forced online,” said Dave Baggett, CEO of cybersecurity firm INKY, which is using artificial intelligence to track a “massive explosion” in corporate email attacks that began in late February and skyrocketed this week.

In recent days, federal law enforcement officials have warned the public about several coronavirus-related schemes that have emerged since the advent of the public health crisis, both online and offline.

According to iTWebAfrica, the most prevalent online attack is called a phishing scam, in which emails that appear to be sent from an employer or another official organisation attempt to get recipients to click on a link and input credentials and personal information.

Hackers can use that information to access the corporate network, an individual’s personal accounts, or download ransomware on a device requiring users or businesses to pay sometimes staggering amounts of ransom in order to regain access.

According to Diana Burley, a Cybersecurity professor at George Washington University, employees working from home  don’t have the same protections they had while working in an office.

“That is coupled with the fact that people are very nervous, and they have a lot of distractions at home and are multi-tasking. It’s become the perfect storm for cybercriminals to exploit the situation and do harm,” Burley said.

Cybersecurity firm RedMarlin is also using artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor phishing attacks, detecting thousands in recent weeks trying to penetrate office networks and steal corporate data, an increase of 72 per cent from January to March.

The group debuted a “threat intel feed” in an attempt to bring the cybersecurity community together to collect and share data on coronavirus scams proliferating online.

According to RedMarlin Chief Scientist Shashi Prakash, bad online actors are “creating fear” in fake emails that often use terms such as “reset password” or “business continuity” to spark urgency.

Scammers are also targeting home workers with fake sites that replicate popular teleconferencing platforms, he said, with domain names that may be off by only one letter.

“We might not understand the implications of people that were phished until months down the line,” said Jason Alafgani, marketing director for RedMarlin.

Experts recommend that individual email users use different passwords for various accounts, change passwords regularly, log out of accounts when they are not in use, back-up data on a hard drive, and have up-to-date virus protection software.

And for workers suddenly adjusting to working from a home office, one expert said “a general paranoia of email is healthy”.

“If an email is asking you to do something sensitive, be very skeptical of that and, if possible, use another way in,” said INKY’s Baggett. “Go directly to the website, try not to use email as the only channel to that source.”

Also, 71 per cent of security professionals have noticed an increase in security threats or attacks since the beginning of the Coronavirus outbreak, with the leading threat being phishing (55per cent) followed by malicious websites purporting to offer information or advice about the pandemic (32per cent).

Increases in malware (28 per cent) and ransomware attacks (19 per cent) have also been noticed.

This is, according to research by cyber security firm Check Point, in collaboration with Dimensional Research.

The firms have released key findings of their study, according to which 95 per cent of security professionals say they are facing added IT security challenges due to the spread of coronavirus.

The three leading challenges were the provision of secure remote access for employees, mentioned by 56 per cent of respondents; the need for remote access scalable solutions (55per cent) and employees working from home were finding and using untested software, tools and services (47per cent).

According to research, on average 2600 coronavirus-related cyber attacks occur each day.

Check Point says the survey results reinforce its recent findings on coronavirus-related domains.

These are 50 per cent more likely to be malicious than other domains registered since January, this year, and the average number of new domains registered in the three weeks from the end of February was almost ten times more than the average number found in previous weeks.

“Furthermore, Check Point can confirm that it sees roughly 2600 coronavirus-related cyber attacks per day, on average; with a peak of 5,000 on March 28, 2020. Over 30,103 new coronavirus-related domains have been (dsicovered),” the group said.

  • PM Africa introduces new initiative to groom entry level product managers

PM Africa introduces new initiative to groom entry level product managers

    Our Reporter

Nigeria-based talent accelerator, Product Managers Africa (PMA) has, in a new development, rolled out a new initiative to support aspiring product managers.

Product Management in Africa is an emerging discipline and that here is not much formal training, everyone seems to be learning from their jobs. Product Management Africa community aims to address this gap by introducing the PMA Growth Incubation Program. The PMA Growth Incubation Program as it is largely referred to is a two- phased learning program that will help groom entry-level product managers, as well as those who are just starting out in that direction.

Speaking of fact, getting a new job as a product manager does not come very handy, especially for someone who is underequipped with the right knowledge of the job role.

As a matter of fact ” the initial period of resuming as a product manager in any organization are the most crucial period of defining your competency, and as such, the practice of trial and error are almost unacceptable” — Funto Akinbisehin, founder PMAfrica.

The roles of a PM among other things have low tolerance for bridging deadlines; for an entry level, the initial period of working in a well-structured organization may not afford the luxury of excess time to discover that you are ‘underprepared for the job’ in the first place.

Contextualizing the above, PMAfrica has created a new initiative to address some key challenges that may be faced during the initial period of setting out as a product manager.

    How Does the Initiative Works?

    The following are the framework of the 3-months incubation program;

    1. Selection Process: The PMA Growth Incubation Program is for aspiring or new Product Managers (PMs) with no related experience. Mentees need to clearly show that they are a fit for the program by submitting an application and a short video explaining why they should be selected for the program.

    2. Program Duration: This program runs for 3 months per session and entails the following learning-based activities:
    • Mentee-Mentor Assignment.
    • Confirmation of Place of Internship & Business Case.
    • One-on-one with Mentors once every week.
    • Monthly Performance Reviews.
    • Final Performance/Growth Review Session.

    3. Write 3 product-related articles: In the course of the 3 months, you will submit a well-researched article on any relevant product-related topic you choose—One article each month.

NB: This is to prepare you for the paperwork and documentation part of your role as a product manager. It will help build your written communication skill, and also your personal brand.

    With the above been said, applicants also stand a chance of benefiting a lot from the program, some of which include, but not limited to the following;

    • A relevant, and well-built portfolio which according to Funto Akinbisehin “are a great way to demonstrate your competencies.”
    • Getting a new Job
    • Successful compensation negotiation
    • Other benefits include real-time PM experiences, High-referrals among several other benefits.
Given that the ongoing health crisis has rather been persisting, a better part of the program will be hosted virtually. On that note, “a virtual meeting will be held weekly, allowing various cohorts which will consist of 30 PMs from Africa to meet for 120 minutes each”.

According to Funto Akinbisehin, this will allow the various teams to go over at least one practical skill of Product Management. Added to that, each team will undergo a pre- reading session as well as collectively work on an assigned task. Best of all, it is a free 3-month internship program.

Beyond the virtual sessions, members of each team will create a means of communication and support each other’s advancement during the program while been paired to a mentor from the PMAfrica mentoring network.

Also, for quality assurance, it is important to note that the program will be graced with up-to-task mentors who are selected among other things “the personal sense of satisfaction it gives them”, in this case, the mentoring job role; this is aside from the fact that they deem the opportunity as a perfect way to give back to society.

The first cohort is scheduled to start on the 1 st August 2020 and 30 mentees were assigned to participating companies including REACH Africa, Vesicash, Vantegral consulting, Ash and Campbell.

According to Funto Akinbisehin, there is a need for applicants to have among other things a strong will/passion for Product Management, which will push such fellows beyond the level of interview and be selected into the program. Additionally, an applicant must be readily available to meet up with and complete all necessary requirements.

  • Cryptocurrency not shortcut to wealth – Ngige Chukwuebuka

Cryptocurrency not shortcut to wealth – Ngige Chukwuebuka

    Adeniyi Adewoyin

In our world today, a lot of misconceptions have been construed about cryptocurrency and crypto trading and it is most pertinent to note that this notion is largely fueled and based on an exaggerated level of ignorance on the functionality and utility of the trade.

According to cryptocurrency expert, Ngige Chukwuebuka, CEO, KD Biz Hub, a company which deals on cryptocurrency and exchange; “A great majority of people have this resolute stance and an unwavering belief that cryptocurrency investment entails quick or ‘now now’, returns, this notion is very wrong.”

Adding, he said; “The reason for this is as a result of these schemes which have sprung up to mislead the public about how cryptocurrency is traded or acquired, thereby putting out a general misconception about the definition and purpose of cryptocurrency. These suspicious online schemes, popularly known as Ponzi schemes which are originally forms of fraud that lures new investors in a bid to pay profits to earlier investors, have begun to pose as crypto trading to attract investors.”

“These schemes have the sole aim of misleading investors to think are actually trading cryptocurrency whereas they are simply in this proposed scheme making cryptocurrency their method of payments e.g. Ethereum, bitcoins, stellar and others.”

Speaking further, he said; “Some of them claim to initially start out as genuine in their intentions but in the long run cart away investors’ monies or in this case cryptocurrency such as bitcoins and Ethereum once they cannot meet up payments. These schemes are usually pretentious and blatantly make up stories to motivate intending investors to believe they are trading cryptocurrency, whereas they are simply robbing Peter to pay Paul.”

READ ALSO: Cryptocurrency trading is good business investment for Nigerians – Odum Chijioke

According to the astute businessman who is pained by the way unsuspecting investors fall prey to these dubious Ponzi schemes, there are a few red flags to note whenever considering trading cryptocurrency with any company or trading platform.

He said; “First, these schemes offer very unrealistic overly convincing and mouthwatering opportunities to turn investors to invest in their schemes. They go as far as eliminating risk factors and proposing very high return rates. Again, they are usually unregistered, unlike legitimate exchange companies such as KD Biz Hub which is not only registered, but with a legit company website.”

Also, on these platforms’ investments are usually complex and secretive on their revenue generating strategies, and it is usually very difficult to pullout from once you’re invested and no longer interested.

“These schemes are deceptively tricking the public about how cryptocurrency is traded and gotten by giving the public a very wrong idea on the importance of crypto trading. Cryptocurrency trading is never a get-rich-quick scheme. It involves a lot of learning, skill and calculation to invest.

“If we can make efforts to properly understand cryptocurrency, it would be of greater benefit to everyone. Crypto trading like any other business venture requires a large amount of consistency for long period intervals before there is any financial breakthrough which is very similar to forex trading. We should always be on the watch out for scams masking as crypto trading platforms whereas they are Ponzi schemes.”

“Finally, legitimate cryptocurrency trading platforms do not make promises of making investors millionaires within a short time frame, rather they coach traders to make the right trading decisions without any peer-to-peer funding involved”, he concluded.
