  • Cybercrooks on the prowl

    Cybercrooks on the prowl

Many bank customers continue to lose cash to cyber crooks who seemed to have turned to mobile phones to perpetrate their nefarious trade, reports LUCAS AJANAKU.

Cybercrooks  are not resting on their oars as they keep devising ways to beat security measures put in place by business organisations and individuals.

A  house wife and mother of four had lost her bag which contained her mobile phone, automated teller machine (ATM) card, cash and other personal effects on a Friday night.

Apparently, she neither locked the screen of her phone nor her subscriber identity module (SIM) card.

When the crooks opened the phone, they scrolled through and discovered her husband’s number saved simply as My King.

The crooks promtly sent a text message to him asking for a reminder of the personal identification number (PIN).

Since there was no way the woman could immediately get to her husband to relay her experience, he innocently sent the PIN and even teased her for easily forgetting almost everything.

Before she could say Jerk or Jill, they had cleared her account.

Lenders have continued to step up enlightenment campaigns for their customers.

One of the lenders, in a note  entitled: Don’t use public WiFi for banking transactions, warned its customers of the dangers in doing so.

It said: “Even if you are careful to make sure no one sees your screen and you remember to log out  completely, fraudsters can find ways to record your activity. “Avoid carrying out financial transaction using public WiFi.”

Another lenders also advised: “Never disclose your mobile application code to anyone over the phone, via sms, email or in person

“Never reveal your card number, OTP, PIN or password to anyone online, over the phone, via sms, email or in person, even when they claim they are from the bank.

“Never click links or download attachments/software from unknown sources

“Never respond to unsolicited messages or phone calls that ask for your personal information or financial details.”

Subscriber base continues to grow in the country.

Active mobile voice subscribers have increased from 151,018,624 in August 2015,  to 190,806,067 as at the end of April 2020. Between August 2015 and February 2019, when teledensity was measured against the 140 population in Nigeria, teledensity increased from 107.87 to 124.05 per cent.

However, after rebasing the country’s teledensity to 91 per cent in February, last year in line with international best practice and economic reality, teledensity increased from 91 per cent to 99.96 per cent as of April 2020.

Internet subscribers increased from 90 million in 2015 to 138.7 million as of April 2020. Broadband penetration also increased from eight per cent in 2015 to 39.58 per cent in April 2020. This indicates that 75.6 million Nigerians are on broadband networks of 3G and 4G in the country.

With the above performance in the country,  a South African group,  Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association (WASPA), has also warned mobile phone users to be vigilant against SMS scams and other malicious digital activities.

The group, through its  General Manager Ilonka Badenhorst, said: “With 90 million mobile connections and widespread availability of money transfer and digital banking facilities, South Africa is tremendously attractive to mobile fraudsters.

“People feel comfortable within their own homes and may not be as cautious online as we would ordinarily be within a corporate setting.”

The group has provided  SMS-related safety advice to mobile phone users who are looking to stay safe digitally during the lockdown period.

Like the two Nigerian lenders, WASPA advised users never to give out any personal information via SMS or email, regardless of the information the requesting company may already have about you.

It urged them to delete any suspicious SMSs or emails immediately, as opening spam SMSs or emails may load malware onto your phone, computer or electronic device. This malware can then track your personal information and passwords.

“If you receive a text message or email from an alleged known source, like your bank or a financial institution, but they are requesting personal or financial information, rather contact their customer support line. Obtain these details from their official website to verify the authenticity of the SMS or email and the associated request,” the group warned.

It also suggested other measures to be safe from online attackers.

“Ensure your anti-virus and anti-malware programmes are always up to date and run scans on your phone, computer or electronic devices daily.

“Keep your software updated and uninstall any apps you are no longer using.

“Only download apps from official app stores – don’t download apps from unverified third party sites.

“Information is power and never has this been more true than during humanity’s current battle against the coronavirus.

“As always, our best weapon online and in the changing bricks and mortar world is our own common sense,”the group warned.

AtaraPay redefines e-commerce space through escrow

    Adeola Ogunlade

AtaraPay, an online escrow service has reiterated its commitment toward redefining and enhancing cash on delivery service in Nigeria in a way that promotes trust, transparency and protects the interest of both parties.

The Executive Director of TrustPay Technologies Limited, Yemi Adebiyi made this known in a statement made available to The Nation on Monday in Lagos, where he said that the emergence of eCommerce in Nigeria has changed the way Nigerians buy and sell goods.

Although bias and skepticism against online shopping persist, over time more consumers have begun to embrace the concept of purchasing items online and getting them delivered at their doorstep. The advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, has also made it imperative for sellers to diversify their sales channel to include an online, omni channel strategy.

He said that however, over time, increased cases of internet fraud, frequent Internet payment transaction failures only served to worsen the perception of customers paying online without physically inspecting the goods.

Adebiyi noted that as a workaround, cash on delivery options quickly became a popular choice with customers who preferred to double-check items in hand before paying in cash. This served as an approach to address the trust deficit and guarantee Quality Assurance.

He said that the introduction of escrow service by African startups such as AtaraPay,  Paylock, Truzo have come in handy in addressing the “issue of Trust”  between buyers and sellers in a way that promotes transparency and protects the interest of both parties.

“As an escrow service, AtaraPay protects the interest of both buyers and sellers by acting as a trusted third-party responsible for the collection of funds and only disburses funds when both parties are satisfied with the transaction. Their unique value proposition is that they limit the uncertainty of online sales and the risk of fraud”.

“For AtaraPay, it goes beyond just solving the trust issue that hinders eCommerce. It hopes to serve as a commitment bridge between buyers and merchants with the aim of bringing about the end of the Cash on Delivery era”.

Adebiyi explained that AtaraPay’s business relationship with Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc enables it to provide a service that can be trusted and reliable enough to take away the monetary bottlenecks and resolve every crisis during transactions. This is a safe way to strike an equilibrium between customer and merchant credibility whilst eliminating fraud in the process”.

“AtaraPay Boosts Customer Confidence. For merchants, AtaraPay escrow payment service can enhance consumer confidence in a new company that does not yet have strong brand recognition, because they have total discretionary power to decide if the service offered or product delivered is satisfactory or not”.

“AtaraPay in partnership with delivery partners, guarantees peace of mind for the merchant during the delivery process. Using AtaraPay escrow payment, the seller does not need to get involved with the complexity around coordinating the delivery partner and the buyer any longer”, he said.

He added that through automation and integration, the delivery partner receives pickup notification when a purchase is made online and seller is notified when delivery is complete. Thereby providing a seamless delivery experience during the escrow process

“AtaraPay is a strong advocate for a better online shopping experience for buyers and sellers in equal measure. It does this by promoting trust which encourages payment before delivery. With a total customer experience package which includes multiple payment methods and dispute resolution mechanism, AtaraPay helps sellers get more buyers who are confident of quality service”, he said.

The Abia-born Akparanta is a graduate of biochemistry in University of Calabar  but later ventured into media/digital marketing and got certified from the University of Johannesburg.

In an interview in Calabar, he said: “While in school, I realised that my senior colleagues that graduated were still seeking jobs. I had a passion for writing, so I had to start a career in media which I saw to be so promising but my attention was divided in school and that made me had an extra year but I later graduated in 2015.”

According to him, going into digital marketing as a business was as a result of the need for it in the society.

“I started with graphic design and at a point; I noticed that a lot of persons that were asking for graphics were brands that want to use graphics as a way of disseminating information and reaching their target audience.

“And in the process, I noticed that most brands don’t even have the knowledge of how to reach their target audience, that’s where my interest in digital marketing came up. I started looking for clients to help them reach their target audience.”

He added: “However, when the COVID-19 pandemic set in, I noticed that a lot of businesses realized the digital space as a major platform where they can leverage for sales and meet their target audience.

“During this period I have trained few people on the use of social media and digital marketing but when the pandemic is over, we have a plan of opening an academy herein Calabar, where we will train 100 persons in Broadcasting, Graphics design, Digital Marketing, Content Writing among other areas that make up the media sphere.

  • Hurdles before digital economy

    Hurdles before digital economy

The Federal Government has set an ambitious target of achieving digital economy by 2023. Stakeholders have urged the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to remove the hurdles to make this happen, reports LUCAS AJANAKU.

STAKEHOLDERS in the telecoms industry have advice for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC): Address the challenges besetting the telecoms sector if the National Digital Economy Policy of the Federal Government will not remain a paper tiger.

The stakeholders, who spoke against the backdrop of the reappointment of Prof Garba Dambatta as the CEO of the Commission, said he should see the appointment as a call to do more for the industry.

The President, Association of Telecoms Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Olusola Teniola, commended the President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Ibrahim Pantami, for allowing continuity  in the sector.

Teniola said Dambatta, having spent the last five years, now knows the challenges of the industry very well. He said the area of digitalising the economy should be taken seriously by the EVC.

According to him, over-the-top (OTT) platforms have shown interest in making democratising internet access to youths  as an empowerment tool. He said this meant that policy will shift from the traditional (voice) to data, adding that collaboration was central to achieving this.

With about $5billion needed to finance the new National Broadban Plan (NBP) that set 70 per cent coverage as target and 90 per cent 4G coverage, he said COVID-19 has shown the importance of infrastructure to digital economy.

The Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecoms Companise of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, said there’s virtue in consistency in leadership.

Like Teniola, he said the NCC should relentlessly pursue the implementation of the NBP, which he said contained very loft objectives.

He said the issue of access to foreign exchange should be eased by  telcos. According to him, the telecoms sector should be accorded priority in the area of forex  allocation as it is a critical because of its enbaling capacities to other sectors.

Adebayo said the EVC should collaborate with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure that telecoms sector gets access to forex.

According to sector analysts,  Dambatta has tried to grow the industry. Despite recession that ravaged the economy about two years ago,  the telecoms segment’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP’s) contribution increased from 8.50 per cent in August 2015 to 10.88 per cent as of Q1 2020.

According to the National Bureau of Statitics (NBS), the entire ICT sector rose to 14.07per cent in first quarter of thuis year.

Active mobile voice subscribers increased from 151,018,624 in August 2015, when  Dambatta came on board,to 189,282,796 as at the end of March 2020. Between August 2015 and February, last year, when teledensity was measured against the 140 population in Nigeria, teledensity increased from 107.87 to 124.05 per cent. However, after rebasing the country’s teledensity to 91 per cent in February, last year, teledensity has  increased from 91 per cent to 99.16 per cent as of March, 2020.

Internet subscribers increased from 90 million in 2015 to 136.2 million as of March 2020. Broadband penetration increased from eight per cent in 2015 to 39.90 per cent in March 2020. This indicates that 76.2 million Nigerians are on broadband networks of 3G and 4G in the country.

In the area of broadband penetration, in line with the Eight-Point Agenda, the country was able to achieve and suppress its broadband target of 30 per cent by  December 2018.

Various efforts of the Commission in licensing new spectrum bands, re-farming certain frequency bands and driving initiatives for increased broadband infrastructure have also been responsible for these feats.

The NCC must be supported by the government through relevant policies to drive the actualisation of the country’s digital economy policy strategy, going forward, a stakeholder said.

“Nigerians need a robust and pervasive broadband connectivity more than ever before in today’s world, where people can easily interact with an Automated Teller Machine (ATM), carry out activities around e-commerce, e-government, tele-medicine, among others on a daily basis,” he said.

Further to the  Eighth-Point Agenda, the Commission has worked the ministry and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to develop a Regulatory Guidelines for the utilisation of television white space (TVWS) for telecom services deployment.  The framework will help the country to leverage TVWS – unused broadcast spectrum – toe extend affordable broadband services to the unserved and under-served communities in the country.

The Commission’s Open Access Model (OAM) project aimed extending access to digital services across the 774 local governments in the country is in place along with licences to Infrastructure Companies (InfraCos).

Six InfraCos have been  licensed to drive the deployment of broadband infrastructure across the nation’s six geo-political zones and Lagos.

As a stimulus to encourage investors of InfraCos to roll out, NCC made provisions in the 2017 and 2018 budgets for subsidies to the InfraCo licensees and it is working with the Federal Government, through the ministry, to ensure disbursement of the counterpart funding to the licensed InfraCos upon attainment deployment milestones.

As a demonstration of commitment to innovation,   Dambatta created a Research and Development (R&D) Department for the Commission in 2016 for synchronising the various ongoing research  and other development projects being carried out by the Commission. This decision, in line with the provisions of the National Telecommunications Policy 2000 and the Nigerian National ICT Policy 2012, is helping the Commission to stimulate and sustain innovations in the ICT industry.

In the area of spectrum administration, the Commission auctioned  six slots of 2×5 megahertz (MHz) in the 2.6 gigahertz (GHz) Band, re-planning of the 800 MHz band for Long-Term Evolution (LTE), licensing of two slots of 10 MHz each in the 700 MHz band, as well as the opening up of the E-band spectrum 70/80 GHz band for both last-mile and backhaul services.

“We will develop and implement flexible, market-oriented spectrum regulatory policies that promote highly efficient use of spectrum in ways that stimulate innovation, investment, and job creation and increased consumer benefits,” he said.

In the area of foreign direct investment, four years ago, it was around $38 billion. It has risen to over $70 billion. NCC said despite this, the investment in the sector is inadequate and will continue to pursue policies that would encourage more investment.

“The volume of telecom investment in Nigeria is very impressive and indicative of a very fast-growing and resilient sector of the economy. But, we will continue to advocate for more investment, giving that the industry was very capital intensive, with the competition for FDIs becoming fiercer among different nations,” Dambatta said.

It is estimated that about 40 million Nigerians, especially those in the rural and semi-urban areas are yet to be reached with basic infrastructure and services, making the over $68 billion investment in the telecom industry inadequate and therefore committed to attracting more investment in the industry.

Stressing this during the NTLS, Danbatta said: “The argument for more investments becomes more compelling, given that this industry is very capital intensive, with the competition for Foreign Direct Investments, FDls, becoming fiercer among different nations. In our consultative regulatory process, we consider shared experiences, and shared vision as the best approach to equip us with the tools to continuously reposition towards the course of effective regulation.
