  • Remembering road accident victims

    Remembering road accident victims

November 15, 2015 (the third Sunday of November) was the World Day of Remembrance of Road Accident Victims.

Without any iota of doubt, road accidents have claimed millions of lives with several other millions of people maimed physically or psychologically. Many have become widows, widowers, orphans and dependants through the death of their loved ones in road accidents.

As these victims of road accidents are being remembered worldwide, I would like to suggest here that the Nigerian governments (Federal, State and local) should go beyond joining other countries to remember these victims by looking into the possibility of implementing the following at various levels nationwide.

1.Set up a Road Accident Fund

    • To provide medical assistance to road accident victims who can still survive when given adequate and immediate medical attention.
    • To compel hospitals to accept road accident victims for immediate treatment even without Police report and prosecute violators.
    • To provide support to the less- privileged, widows or widowers of road accident victims.
    • To provide education and other necessary support to the orphans produced by road accidents.
    1. Give priority attention to the implementation of the Corporate Manslaughter Act signed into law early this year (2015) as a way of ensuring adequate training and re – training of drivers by driving schools and total compliance to the duty of care by the employers of drivers and drivers of self–own vehicles.
    2. Set up a Road Traffic Court where surviving drivers of road accidents and other traffic law violators can be tried and prosecuted appropriately. This will ensure quick justice and promote safe driving on Nigeria’s roads.
    3. The governments and other Road Safety Stakeholders must get more committed and actively mark the World Day of Remembrance of Road Accident victims which is globally slated for the third Sunday of November of every year. The well pronounced marking of the day will also go a long way to increase safety–consciousness and further enhance safety on Nigeria roads.
    4. All officers of Federal and State government Traffic Management Agencies must wholeheartedly work with diligence and incorruptible hands to avoid loss of lives and valuable properties on Nigeria roads. The eyes of the Almighty God is watching all of us, His creatures and will reward us all according to our deliberate actions and inactions here on earth.

  • Kia Rio gets Car of the Year award

Kia Rio gets Car of the Year award

Kia Motors Nigeria was the cynosure of all at the yearly NAJA Awards at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, when its Rio brand defeated other automobiles’ brands to win the Car of the Year Award, reports TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

THE Kia Rio automobile in a keenly contested competition, has beat other brands to earn the prestigious 2015 Car of the Year (COTY) Award. It got the highest number of votes across the country to top the competition.

The event, which was the annual Nigerian Automobile Journalists Association (NAJA) awards, saw the Kia Rio conquering some high-performance challengers to take the victory. The brand was adjudged to have ticked all the boxes in terms of value for money, safety, innovation, technology and dynamics.

The third generation Kia Rio’s fantastic engines, great handling, and lighter platform were adjudged the best amongst other competing brands.

In October this year, NAJA started conducting annual assessment of all selected cars that are eligible to be included in the car of the year category. All the cars went through rigorous testing, which also included driving on various Nigerian roads.

At the ceremony, which held at the Eko Hotels and Suites, NAJA’s judges revealed that the Kia Rio won because of its sophistication and fuel efficiency. Other factors considered were its handling and drivers’ involvement.

“Kia will continue to build cars that brighten people’s lives and exceed their expectations. The Kia Rio has just upped the ante once again. We aim to become a “one-and-only” brand for our customers; a brand they will choose again and again,” said Chief Commercial Officer, Kia Motors Nigeria, Sandeep Malhotra.

Intelligently designed and expertly engineered, every single detail of both the Kia Rio’s exterior and interior seems meticulously thought-out.

The Kia Rio, also dubbed as the People’s Car, is a top-of-the-segment sub-compact car featuring the engineering prowess, future-proofed safety technologies and classic design elements that ensure that they will remain remarkable for years to come.

The Rio is a solid pick for a small sedan or hatchback. It’s not quite as refined as some class-leading rivals, but it might still win you over with its inviting cabin, strong engine performance and excellent value.

It is stylish inside and out; ample standard and optional features; high-quality interior materials on EX and SX; long warranty; strong acceleration; feels bigger than it is.

“Grown-up” really would be the optimum expression to describe the Rio. Its exterior is notably European in appearance, with the sedan in particular, avoiding the awkward proportions of its competitors. And although the base LX trim is rather bare-bones, the EX and SX step things up considerably with higher-quality interior materials and near-luxury levels of equipment that are sure to make one forget that he’s in such a small car.

It comes with standard four-wheel antilock disc brakes, stability control, hill start assist, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags.

Overall, the Rio stays very composed when driven either gently or at whatever the engine can deliver. It handles remarkably well for a small, inexpensive hatchback with a basic strut and torsion-beam suspension and a short wheelbase, although one would appreciate some more feedback from the steering.

The interior is a little tighter on space than other subcompacts, but pleasing trims and materials and reasonably good cabin refinement keep it more cheerful than the other choices.

  • How to make auto policy work, by expert

Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz Centre, Benson Uwatse has cautioned the National Automotive Design and Development Council  in its drive to implement the auto policy, saying there is no proper legislation on it by the National Assembly.

Uwatse disagreed that a Semi-Knocked Down (SKD) vehicle will be less cost effective compared to fully built imported ones.

He spoke in Lekki, Lagos at a briefing to mark the 25th anniversary of Mercedes-Benz Automobile Services, 30 years of four-wheel drive system developed by Mercedes-Benz (4matic) and 90 years of Bang & Olufsen.

The government, he said, needs to examine the auto policy thoroughly before its full implementation for it to be effective.

“You cannot announce a policy today and say it is taking effect from tomorrow. That has always been our problem with it and since then we have been struggling with it,” he said.

According to him, it took South African automotive industry 15 years to get to where they are today, urging the council to take a gradual process.

He identified lack of infrastructure as one of the banes of the sector.

“Where is the Infrastructure? In Nigeria today we do not have an industry that manufacture windscreen wiper, which is the smallest and cheapest level of ancillary item you need in a car. Even the tire industry has disappeared to Ghana and other places,” he said.

Uwatse said much as they are not oppose to the policy, Mercedes- Benz would not want their cars assembled where the skills to handle them are not available.

“In my workshop for instance, for every technician that we find good enough to employ, we would have interviewed nothing less than nine before we pick one that we could train and you tell me that I should assemble these cars behind you in Nigeria?” he queried.

Uwatse described the anniversary as a special occasion for his company.

“We used to be Mercedes-Benz shop out there in Masha, Surulere” he recalled, adding: “And it was our dream that one day, we would have a place called Mercedes-Benz Centre. We did it in 2011.”

Mercedes-Benz, he noted, had been in business for 130 years, while Band & Olufsen had done 90 years.

“And to celebrate their 90th year, they invented something that does not look like loudspeakers,” he said.

Uwatse said there is a synergy between Mercedes-Benz and Bang &Olufsen, saying sound systems in most Mercedes-Benz come from the latter.

“Bang & Olufsen is a high-end quality product and Mercedes-Benz is also a high-end quality product. In Nigeria, I am the link between the two. If you look into our database, you’d find that quite a few of the people that have bought Mercedes-Benz cars from us have also bought bang and Olufsen.”

Emphasising the synergy between the two premium brands, the General Manager of Bang & Olufsen Nigeria Limited, Mrs Chinwe Uwatse said just as one could find 40-year-old G-Wagon that is still on the road, and the owner will not sell it, the same is applicable to buyers of Bang & Olufsen products.

  • SCOA seeks support for auto assemblers

THE Federal Government  and corporate organisations have been asked to support  genuine assemblers of automobiles.

Chairman SCOA Nigeria Plc, Mr. Henry Agbamu,  made the call in Lagos while receiving an eight-man delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries. They include Nigerians and three representatives from the ECOWAS led by Mr. Traore Kalilou.

The team also visited the SCOA MAN Trucks Assembly Plant.

He said the support was needed because the industry is capital intensive.

Group Managing Director /Chief                  Executive Officer SCOA Nigeria PLc Dr. Massad Boulos said the SCOA MAN Assembly Plant, which is a mix of Semi- Knock Down (SKD) and Complete Knock Down (CKD), has a production capacity of 3000 units per year, depending on the shifts.

He noted that the capacity also depends on whether the plant is using one or two assembly lines, adding that the assembly of trucks is different from assembly of passenger cars or buses because it is more complex.

“The trucks are assembled without welding. But after the assemblage, there are other fabrication works that will be done to create jobs. These are done at another location which will generate more employment. This is why trucks are different,” he added.

Boulos, who described the automotive policy by Federal Government as a welcome development, said the policy would increase local content as well as create auxiliary works that can provide locally produced components.

He expressed confidence that soon component providing companies that have left Nigeria would return to operation as the industry is being boosted by the new policy.

“The government has put in place some forms of soft loans to assist the assemblers.  But our consumers will also need such soft loans too. Also, there is need to put in place custom duties that will protect the local industry and its consumers. The idea of producing locally is to create job and promote local production,” Boulos added.

Kalilou said the team wass happy with what they saw, especially the implementation of the automotive policy.

  • Vehicle seats and fatality rate in Nigeria

It is a truism that the rate of road traffic accidents is very high in Nigeria according to a recent global ranking but the rate of road accident fatalities could be drastically reduced if the vehicles involved on the accidents are road – worthy.

In this article, I want to focus the searchlight on Commercial vehicle seats. The seats of most Commercial buses plying the intra – State and inter – State roads have been reconstructed and turned to death traps.

Sometimes ago, I witnessed an accident on Isawo road in Ikorodu where two Commercial vehicles had head – on collision. Though none of the vehicles somersaulted and the impact on the 2 vehicles was minimal but most of the passengers inone of the vehicles sustained injuries because all the seats in the vehicle dislocated from the basement of the bus and wounded the passengers who were either wedged by the iron of the seats or fell on other passengers. The injuries would have been averted if the seats were firmly fixed in this incidence.

In a bid to create room for 4 passengers per row in the bus, the Commercial bus Drivers often remove the original seats which were meant for just 3 passengers per row to fix their local seats. In most cases, the leg rooms are so closed that many passengers ended up having pains on their legs in a journey of just about 1 or 2 hours.

Apart from the fact that it is an offence for the Commercial bus Drivers to carry 4 passengers in a row, it is also inconvenient and dangerous to the passengers whether or not the vehicles are involved in accidents.

Some years back, the Lagos State Government took a strong action against the reconstruction of bus seats but the action died down within a short period.

It is now more expedient than ever before for the Vehicle Inspection Officers nationwide to commence action against the use of reconstructed seats and improperly fixed seats to save the passengers from avoidable hazards on the roads.

The rubbers, foams and leathers used to cover the iron have torn off thereby exposing the dangerous iron which have torn many clothes and many flesh.

The body of some of the Commercial buses have seriously degenerated thereby becoming a moving casket. It takes just a little impact in an accident for such buses to scatter on the road thereby leaving the passengers unprotected from injuries and death.

I hereby plead with the relevant Authorities and the Driver Unions to keep rickety and dangerously reconstructed vehicles away from the roads to prevent avoidable injuries and deaths. Vehicle standards is as important as Driver Standards in the war against road accidents and fatalities.

  • Infinity Tyres rewards loyalty with Promo

Leading tyres distributor, Infinity Tyres Limited, has announced the starting of its annual promo.

At a briefing in Lagos, its Executive Director, Rajesh Chawla, said the promo was meant to reward its customers’ loyalty,

Chawla flanked by Country Head, Sanjay Singh and Marketing Communication, Praneen Kumar, said prizes for the 13th edition of the promo will include cash, tyre services such as wheel balancing and alignment, electrical car jacks, car vacuum cleaners, radiator coolants, among others.

“Infinity value drive promo guarantees the customers, a chance to win various prizes instantly on the purchase of Infinity tyre or battery at any of the accredited Infinity Tyres and Infinity Express outlets,” he said.

Chawla noted that the organisation, which is the sole marketer of tyre brands including Pirelli, Goodyear, Infinity, CEAT and battery brand; Exide and Infinity, was working hard to expand its operation base and help reduce the challenges of unemployment in the country.

Commending the patronage of customers, Chawla said the organisation would ensure that it put smiles on the faces of customers by offering reward for every purchase.

Chawla, who stated that the growth of the organisation in Nigeria was clear indication of the trust built in the brands, lauded the efforts of its stakeholders and retail customers in turning the brand to leading brand in the market.

The award was in recognition of exceptional performance in sales and market share achievement by Stallion NMN. The auto firm has consistently grown Nissan market share year-on-year, culminating in a significant leap from four to 10 per cent in the 2014 Financial Year.

Managing Director and President, Nissan South Africa Region, Mike Whitfield, applauded Stallion NMN for consistently elevating Nissan market share in Nigeria.

He noted that Nissan has strong desire to make full and lasting contribution to play a significant role in the growth of the automotive sector.
