    Rolls-Royce: elegance, speed, dynamism

Rolls-Royce has been considered the ultimate vehicle for decades, and the Phantom ultra-luxury sedan is a testament to Rolls-Royce’s reputation. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO was at the Banana Island where the Phantom, Wraith and Ghost were put to test drive last week.

Unsurpassed levels of comfort, the best interior materials and unparalleled exclusivity are hallmarks of Rolls-Royce cars, but only a select few are able to enjoy this level of craftsmanship.

It doesn’t get much better than Rolls-Royce. Considered the world’s finest automobile, Rolls-Royce has been under the stewardship of BMW for over a decade, and their Phantom sedan, launched in 2003, revived the brand from near obscurity to one of the foremost symbols of extreme wealth.

The Phantom is like an icing on the cake for the Wraith and Ghost models.

The three were put to a test ride last Saturday at Banana Island, a town specially carved out for the super rich in the Centre of Excellence -Lagos.

According to Tolulope Gbadamosi, Brand Manager, Rolls Royce Motor Cars in Nigeria, the cars are meant for ultra-high network of individuals.

No wonder, only 225 units are currently being in circulation across the country, which make Nigeria, the highest users of Rolls Royce in Africa.

The drive experience speaks of the effort put into the brand. For instance, the organisation maintained that Rolls-Royce used to produce the chassis with engine and drivetrain which was then sent to a dedicated coach-builder who finished the body of the car. The final car would return to the Rolls-Royce factory before handing them over to the customer with full warranty from Rolls-Royce. Even if components made by the coach-builder broke Rolls-Royce would look after the defect.

The cars’ RR monogram in the centre of the tyres stays upright always – the only car in the world with such monumental achievement.

Taking about the Ghost, its innovative technology and unrivalled engineering make the driving intuitive. Rooted in simplicity, every detail has a timeless elegance and purity, allowing you to forge a graceful path through an ever-changing world.

It possesses a modern masterpiece of simplicity. The Ghost overrules tradition. Its modern shape creates an informal presence. And the powerful grille, chrome bumper and LED headlights exude contemporary dynamism.

Instantly recognisable from the front, Ghost has a purposeful stance as it waits to be driven. Integrated LED headlights emit a mystical glow, framed by the unbroken daytime running lights. And the subtle sculpting of the bumper – together with the aerodynamic jet air intake-styled front grille – enhance its dynamism. Undeniably streamlined, the fluid lines are accentuated by the Spirit of Ecstasy, tilted seven degrees further forward and ready to lead the way as you take to the road.

Bold and powerful yet remarkably restrained, Ghost is armed with a twin-turbo 6.6-litre V12 engine. Select from five wheel designs and two finishes, each featuring unique, self-righting wheel centres – so that the Rolls Royce monogram is always displayed upright.

The Wraith takes to the road in style and unique expression. Drench it in the two-tone colour scheme one always dreamed about. It makes a statement with contrasting coach lines and brings the night sky inside with a bespoke starlight headliner.

It takes 450 hours to build and craft Wraith. To make the inside as spacious as possible, engineers build the steel monocoque body by hand. And the effort spent perfectly bookmatching veneers and working the leather is merely a glimpse of the craftsmanship involved in creating the power, style and drama of Wraith.

The craftspeople are limited only by one’s imagination.

Continuing this attention to detail are our leather experts. Using 219 pieces of the highest-grade leather, they hand-stitch sections along the sides of the interior to echo the sweeping lines of the fastback design. Over time, the leather develops its own character – not mass-produced and one that never squeaks or cracks.

In the Woodshop, woodwork specialists spend up to a month shaping, sanding and polishing numerous wood parts. To make the interior unique to clientele, choose between traditional or contemporary grains or Canadel Panelling.

The boldest expression of Rolls Royce yet, the striking fastback silhouette of Wraith exudes elegance and power. Expressive, sweeping lines and a wide rear track give it a dynamic and athletic prowess. And the long bonnet, deep grille and pronounced air intakes promise truly potent performance.

Redefining the boundaries of Rolls Royce motor cars, Wraith has a fleeting and enigmatic presence. With a curved, dynamic appearance and fastback design, Wraith evokes a sense of energy, even while standing still. Its innate drama materialises in the twin exhausts and frameless coach doors, which open wider than on any other Rolls Royce motor car. And the deeply recessed vertical grille adds to Wraith’s confident stance.

A key attribute of Rolls Royce DNA, Wraith possesses the classic 2:1 proportions of wheel to body height. The long rear overhang and signature self-righting wheel centres endure too. But the iconic spirit of ecstasy sits further forward and at a sharper angle on the grille, conveying Wraith’s boundless determination as it cuts through the wind.

The Phantom delivers the utmost in motoring luxury in all of its derivatives, with a price tag to match.

It could be argued that the Rolls-Royce Phantom represents the pinnacle of the auto world, the sole occupant of some very rarified air. Shy of the latest Maybach revival and the Bentley Mulsanne, there is no production vehicle that comes close to its levels of opulence.

Motivation for the Phantom comes from the massive 6.75-liter V-12 engine rated at 453 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. It may not be as potent as the engine in the smaller Ghost, but it is still enough to get the Phantom to 60 mph in less than six seconds. Outright speed is not the mission of the Phantom, anyway, it is providing an effortless and serene atmosphere. An eight-speed automatic transmission handles the gear shifts, imperceptibly so, sending power to the rear wheels.

The Phantom sedan isn’t a driver’s car. It is meant to be ridden in, with a driver at the helm. Accordingly, handling and agility aren’t among its strengths; at least not without considering its size. At nearly 20 feet in length, the Phantom is Chevrolet Suburban-sised. It lords over pretty much everything that isn’t an SUV or truck. Independent suspension, self-leveling air springs, electronic damping, and feather-light steering give the Phantom more maneuvering aplomb than one would expect, however. Fuel economy is also in line with its size, at 11 mpg city and 19 mpg highway for all models.

Gbadamosi said it required timeline to order for the vehicle depending on the features customers want in the car, which may include fridge, rear and slide curtains, rear theatre entertainment and others.

“We give customers two to three weeks to think of how you want your cars to look like and if there will be any change to be effected,” he said.

According to him, maintaining the cars in Nigeria won’t be a problem since Rolls Royce Motor Cars outlet in Nigeria can now be maintained by a team of expatriates from Spain and Greece.

He said that there is a regional training supporting the aftersales to make sure they meet the Rolls Royce standard and to make sure they deliver on the brand promise to customers.

  • ‘Why we introduced Chinese models’

    ‘Why we introduced Chinese models’

ELIZADE Nigeria Limited Managing Director Mr Demola Ade Ojo has said the purpose of introducing JAC model of vehicles, a Chinese brand, was to cater for those who could not afford Toyota models.

Ade Ojo expressed optimism that the lower cadre in the society will find JAC automobiles worthwhile the prize.

Besides, he said an assembly plant is being constructed for the JAC, hoping that it should be ready by third quarter of next year.

He promised to push the Chinese brand to dominate the auto market in few years to come.

While conducting journalists round the facility of the new brand in Lagos, Ade Ojo explained that his organisation has put the brand to test and could guarantee that the agility and vigour of the brand would stand competition in the market.

“Because of the nature of Nigeria’s weather and road terrain, the truck model has two fuel filters to safeguard against adulterated fuel as well as a strengthened rear axle to accommodate overloading,” he said.

Ade-Ojo said his organisation partnered with JAC so as to offer Nigerians vehicles with value for their money and at the same time meet international minimum standards, particularly in safety and engine performance.

The Regional Manager, Light Commercial Vehicles Division, JAC International, Lyrida Lu, said the brand has been in the international market for over 30 years, adding that it remained the number one exporter of light commercial vehicles in China.

  • Zero introduces electric motorcycles

    Zero introduces electric motorcycles

There are some clear advantages to going electric: no need to visit the filling station, no oil, no exhaust, among others. These and many more are reasons why Zero introduces electric motorcycles – the FX and DS, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

There are a host of benefits experienced by Zero owners on a regular basis that are not as obvious.

The Zero FX is an off road motorcycle while the DS are the street version.

Behind the design of each cutting edge model is a philosophy of elegant simplicity that keeps the weight of the motorcycle low, virtually eliminates all routine powertrain maintenance and yields stealthy acceleration. The result is an incredibly exhilarating ride and an ownership experience that appreciates mile after mile.

As a premium brand, Zero designs each motorcycle with the sort of quality and integrity that inspires an exceptional riding experience. Beyond that, the upfront cost of a Zero is not what it appears to be when compared against its traditional internal combustion counterparts. Each mile ridden on a Zero is considerably less expensive, making it considerably more enjoyable, due to the elimination of routine powertrain maintenance and no gas expenses. As it turns out, when compared to other premium brands, a Zero starts saving the owner money on gas and maintenance from day one. In fact, over the life of their motorcycle, many Zero owners actually save more than they would have if they had purchased a comparable internal combustion model.

All Zero motorcycles feature a direct drive, maintenance-free powertrain. As an incredibly efficient system, direct drive channels power directly from the motor to the rear wheel via a strong and silent, constant tension belt. Not only does direct drive minimise friction loss by eliminating clutches and gears, but it also helps eliminate the need for routine powertrain maintenance and reduces the weight of the motorcycle.

The Zero FX features a fully modular power pack system. With slots for two power packs, one can operate the Zero FX with either one or both slots filled. The modules can be charged either on the motorcycle or elsewhere using optional accessories, giving you the ability to charge without a street-level outlet.

Modules can be fully removed from the motorcycle and transported to charge anywhere.

The motor in the Zero FX is configured to produce incredible torque and sits inside the lightest motorcycle in the lineup. The result is thrilling acceleration. Zero Motorcycles designed the Z-Force motor from the ground up to be compact, efficient and powerful. Completely air-cooled, the motor is designed to provide a fantastic riding experience minus the need for any regular maintenance. When slowing down, the motor generates electricity that is channeled back into the power pack to help extend ride times.

At the core of the Zero FX lies the ultimate dirt bike frame that Zero engineered from the ground up and handcrafted using aircraft-grade aluminum. The resulting combination of lower weight and higher strength means more responsiveness. In the corners and off the line, this translates into greater acceleration. For added durability, each frame is shot-peened and anodized.

  • Overspeeding and dangerous overtaking

Amongst the causes of accidents in Nigeria, overspeeding and dangerous overtaking are prominent,Iam therefore calling for more attention on result – oriented driver education and discipline among road users, government traffic management agencies and other stakeholders.

Efforts are currently being made by the Federal Road Safety Commission to enforce the installation of speed limiters in vehicles while overnments (Federal, state and local) are gradually waking up to install more speed limit signs on the roads in various parts of the country.

Be that as it may, there are some critical facts which I want to highlight for every driver (or Rider) to remember when driving (or riding).

No matter the speed limit specified in the Highway Code or installed on the roads, every driver (or rider) must know that over- speeding is relative and depends on other factors such as:

    1. The condition of the road surface.
    2. The weather or visibility (night, raining or cloudy).
    3. The condition of the vehicle.
    4. The volume of traffic on the road.
    5. The knowledge, skill and experience of the driver.

Every driver (or rider) must therefore know that the speed limit installed on the road or in the Highway Code is not a target to accomplish but a guide. You therefore need to consider the above – mentioned points among others, to determine the appropriate or safe speed at any point in time.

Based on the researches I previously carried out and my experience in driver training, I found out that quite a lot of drivers were guilty of wrong overtaking while a lot did not follow the MSM(Mirrors, Signal, Maneuver) /PSL(Position, Speed, Look-looking, assessing, deciding, and acting) routine for overtaking.

At this juncture, I want to remind all drivers that they must not overtake at corners (road bends), on a hill, on a bridge, at junctions, at a roundabout, at bus stops, markets or rowdy places where it is difficult to predict the next move of other road users. It is also dangerous to join other vehicles to overtake in a queue, particularly when you cannot see the oncoming vehicles.

Furthermore, I want to reiterate here that every driver (or rider) must understand and practise the MSM routine for overtaking. That is, when you are planning to overtake, you must first of all check your mirror to know if another vehicle is already overtaking from behind. If the back is free, then signal your intention to move out of your lane as a message to the upcoming vehicles behind you, then maneuver by pulling out (with the following distance rule kept), move past the vehicle you are overtaking up to the point where you can clearly see the whole parts of the vehicleyou just passed, through your side mirror, then use your turn indicator (pointer) again to signal and return  to your lane (while still maintaining the following distance rule).

Driving is a complex activity and must be given the right attention without giving room to distractions. Total compliance to the s  afe driving rules, and road traffic laws are very fundamental to ensuring safety on Nigeria roads.

  • Hyundai launches ‘global luxury’ Genesis

    Hyundai launches ‘global luxury’ Genesis

Hyundai Motor has announced an all-new global luxury brand – Genesis – that will deliver ‘human-centered’ luxury through a range of new models that feature the highest standards of performance, design and innovation, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO

    Interior of the car
    Interior of the car

THE new Hyundai Genesis is a brand that would compete with the world’s leading luxury car brands. Refined performance, athletic elegance in design and human-focused, are part of innovations that elevate the Genesis brand.

Created for a new generation of discerning consumers, Genesis will be a stand-alone brand that operates alongside the company’s popular Hyundai Marque. Capitalising on its success in the fast-growing global car market, Hyundai Motor will launch six new Genesis models by 2020 to compete with the world’s most renowned luxury car brands.

The name – Genesis, – which also means new beginnings, hints at the new values and standards that, the brand will bring to the global luxury car market. Initially on sale in the Korean, Chinese, North American and Middle Eastern luxury car markets, the Genesis brand will expand its reach to Europe and other parts of Asia as the model range grows to full strength.

Setting the brand’s cars apart from competitors, innovation will begin with the consumer, with customer requirements directing development. This philosophy echoes the vision of Hyundai Motor to be a ‘lifetime partner in automobiles and beyond’, with the ‘Modern Premium’ brand direction of Hyundai reinterpreted for the new Genesis Marque.

The Genesis brand seeks to create a new definition of luxury, one that will provide a new platform for future mobility centered on people. By anticipating human needs at every touch point, Genesis models will embody four key aspects: Human-focused innovation, refined and balanced performance, athletic elegance in design and hassle-free customer experience.

“We have created this new Genesis brand with a complete focus on our customers, who want smart ownership experiences that save time and effort, with practical innovations that enhance satisfaction. The Genesis brand will fulfil these expectations, becoming a market leader through our human-centered brand strategy,” said Euisun Chung, Hyundai Motor Company Vice Chairman.

Genesis models will boast outstanding driving dynamics and design, with innovations tailored to closely-meet the needs of customers. The new model line-up will distance itself from the traditional technological overload of brand-focused competitors, concentrating instead on a personalised, hassle-free customer experience. Continuing the customer-oriented approach that flows through every Genesis model, sales and service staff will provide rapid and attentive service to customer’s requests.

To elevate and differentiate the  Genesis brand from Hyundai, a distinct design identity, emblem, naming structure and customer service offering is being established.

Genesis models will be badged with a new wing-type emblem, redesigned from the version used on the current Genesis model to create an even more luxurious look. This emblem firmly cements the Genesis models as a collective family of luxury models under the Genesis nameplate.

The Genesis brand will also adopt a new alphanumeric naming structure. Future models will be named by combining the letter ‘G’ for Genesis with a number, 90, 80 or 70 etc., representing the segment.

Woong Chul Yang, Head of Hyundai Motor R&D Center and Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor said: “The Genesis models will provide technological innovation, excellent driving performance and luxury to customers. Every Genesis model will be created with the needs of our customers in mind, so the resulting car will perfectly meet their needs without any unnecessary burden or excess.”

Fitted with the latest proactive safety technologies, intuitive convenience features and IT connectivity, Genesis models are engineered to provide excellent ride comfort while retaining confident sportiness.

To develop a distinctive and differentiated design for the new Genesis brand vehicles, Hyundai Motor has created a Prestige Design Division. From mid-2016 Luc Donckerwolke, who was previously responsible for the design of Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, SEAT and Skoda models at the Volkswagen Group, will lead this new division alongside his role as Head of the Hyundai Motor Design Centre. The work of the new Prestige Design Division will be overseen by Peter Schreyer, as part of his group-wide design responsibilities as President and Chief Design Officer (CDO) of Hyundai Motor Group.

“In creating the design signature of Genesis brand cars, we set out to display confidence and originality, creating highly desirable products that present new charm through innovative styling and proportions,” Schreyer said.

  • Race for car-of-the-year hots up

The organiser of Nigeria Car-of-the-year (COTY) Award has selected Toyota Corolla, Kia Rio, Peugeot 301 and Nissan Almera to compete for the coveted price.

Winner of the Car-Of-The-Year will be announced on November 26 at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Nigeria Car of the Year competition has been around over the years and the strictest criteria apply to the finalists. To appraise and select the winner, each of the listed cars will thoroughly be put through its paces on the road by the motoring journalists. To emerge tops, the car that will win the shield will have to tick all the boxes in terms of value for money, safety, innovation, technology and dynamics.

During the test drive, a number of factors will be used as parameters to select the car that would be selected as the eventual winners.

These factors, according to the Nigeria Auto Journalists Award (NAJA) include, but not limited to each car’s value proposition in terms of road handling, stability, functionality, comfort, safety features, overall design, availability and   accessibility of spare parts and product affordability.

The annual NAJA Award, which is the most respected automotive award in Nigeria, attracts a lot of excitement and suspense among stakeholders within and outside the industry.

  • Religious organisations and road safety education

Religious organisations and road safety education

The World Health Organisation Reports revealed that about 1.4 million deaths and over 50 million injuries are attributed to road accidents every year globally with most of them occurring in African Countries (including Nigeria).

Nigeria was recently ranked as the third country with the highest rate of accidents and fatalities among 193 countries and thereby declared one of the most dangerous countries to drive in the world.

The above – mentioned status reports on Road Safety in Nigeria are worrisome and embarrassing thereby calling for drastic and down to earth proactive measures to effectively combat the menace.

The death of a single person in a road accident has psychological, social, and economic effects on other road users, family members, Religious institutions, service providers, business organisation and governments.

One of the effective proactive measures I want to encourage here is that all religious organisations should get more involved in road safety education in their assemblies.

It has become more expedient now than ever for all Religious Organisations to be exposed to comprehensive education in Pedestrians safety, safe riding techniques, causes of road accidents and the rules for safe driving.

Organising programmes on road safety on other days outside the regular worship time can never be as effective and well attended as having the lectures during the regular worship days. That is, religious organisations should have periodic lectures on road safety issues in place of the normal sermon (sermon – time in Churches, Mosques and other popular and well – attended religious gathering).

Religious organisations must get more committed to reducing the number of widows, widowers, orphans and dependants through the reduction of the number of deaths and injuries on Nigerian roads by organising and supporting public education programmes on Road Safety in every part of Nigeria.

The Federal Road Safety Commission and the Association of Driving Instructors of Nigeria (a coalition of driving schools in Nigeria) are willing and equipped to assist the religious organisations in providing quality road safety education to their congregation in any part of the country.

We shall all give account of our actions and inactions concerning the prevention of deaths and injuries on Nigeria roads. A stitch in time saves nine.

  • Kewalram, Isuzu to export locally-assembled trucks

Kewalram, Isuzu to export locally-assembled trucks

The National Automotive Policy received a boast last week when a Japanese automaker, Isuzu Motors Limited in collaboration with a Nigerian company, Kewalram Chanrai Group, has promised to start exporting locally-assembled trucks to West African countries.

The two auto giants said work had started on the assembly plant site in Lagos, saying that the first set of locally assembled Isuzu trucks would be out in the second quarter of 2016.

According to Kewalram Chanrai Group Deputy Managing Director, Mr Victor Eburajolo, the project would be financed by a subsidiary of the group, Koncept Auto Centre Limited, with technical support coming from Isuzu Motors of Japan.

Koncept Autocentre General Manager, Mr Gaurav Kaul, expressed the possibility of exporting some of the locally assembled trucks to other West African countries.

“We expect that by 2016, we should be fully operational and running. We’re starting with light duty trucks,” he explained.

Kaul also said the company was interested in making long-term investments in Nigeria, adding: “As we have been doing in the last 100 years, we’ll continue on the growth path.”

Eburajolo said the group, after securing the licence from the Federal Government for the project, had been in constant touch with the National Automotive Design and Development Council, giving it progress report.

Eburajolo said the determination of the government to ensure the success of its auto policy paved the way for many automakers to establish vehicle assembly plants in the country.

“We’re for the auto policy and are encouraged by the government. We’re in contact with the NADDC and we carry the council along on the project. Two weeks ago, its team was with us. We’re here to stay as Isuzu is known for quality products and we will maintain that standard with the new trucks to be assembled in Nigeria,” he said.

He recalled that Isuzu used to be a major auto brand in Nigeria, occupying a reputable position because of its strength, durability and performance.

Eburajolo said the Izuzu brand had been under the Koncept Autocentre in the past one year, enjoying exclusive showrooms and after sale service outlets different from the other brand being handled by the company.
