  • Porsche Taycan enters Guinness World Records

Porsche Taycan enters Guinness World Records

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

The Porsche Taycan has entered the Guinness World Records for the longest drift with an electric vehicle. The scene of the world record was the Porsche Experience Centre (PEC) Hockenheimring. Porsche instructor Dennis Retera did 210 laps on the 200 metre-long drift circle without the front wheels ever pointing in the same direction as the curve: after 55 minutes the sideways expert had covered a total of 42.171 kilometres. By completing this marathon distance, Retera secured the world record for the longest continuous drift in an electric car. The average speed was 46 km/h. The record was achieved with the rear-wheel drive version of the Taycan, which is already on sale in China.

Retera said: “When the driving stability programmes are switched off, a powerslide with the electric Porsche is extremely easy, especially of course with this model variant, which is driven exclusively via the rear wheels. Sufficient power is always available. The low centre of gravity and the long wheelbase ensure stability. The precise design of the chassis and steering allows for perfect control at all times, even when moving sideways”.

The Dutch is now the Chief Instructor at the Porsche Experience Centre Hockenheimring, but previously competed in karting, single seaters and endurance races.

“Nevertheless, it was also very tiring for me to keep my concentration high for 210 laps, especially as the irrigated asphalt of the drift circuit does not provide the same grip everywhere. I concentrated on controlling the drift with the steering – this is more efficient than using the accelerator pedal and reduces the risk of spinning,” he said.

The attempt took place under the supervision of Guinness World Records official record judge Joanne Brent on the irrigated driving dynamics area of the PEC.

Brent has been supervising record attempts of all kinds for Guinness World Records for over five years.

“We’ve had some drift records, but with an electric sports car, it’s something very special for us too. Here Porsche has done real pioneering work,” she said.

The Guinness expert meticulously documented the record with a whole range of technical aids and other independent experts: before the test, a local land surveyor measured the 80-metre diameter area of the Porsche Experience Centre with millimetre precision. GPS and yaw rate sensors within the vehicle were used for documentation purposes, as was a camera installed on the roof of the track’s control tower, with which the record ride was filmed.

Another independent expert was Denise Ritzmann. Prior to the record attempt, the engineer confirmed the standard and roadworthy condition of the pre-series Taycan with rear-wheel drive on behalf of testing organisation DEKRA. Ritzmann knows all about drifting: she was European drifting champion in 2018 and 2019 and was also responsible for ensuring the Taycan remained in a permanent drift throughout the record attempt:

“You can see at a glance whether the front wheels are pointing in a different direction to the curve. As long as this is the case, the car is drifting,” she explained. Together with Brent, she also counted the laps completed during the record attempt.

The Porsche Taycan is already a record holder in many other disciplines: whether it is the gruelling 24-hour endurance run over 3,425 km on the high-speed track in Nardò; the best time in its class of 7:42 minutes on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife or the 26 sprints from a standing start to 200 km/h at the airfield in Lahr – the record statistics of the first all-electric sports car from Porsche make impressive reading.

The PEC at Hockenheimring is the second German centre after Leipzig. Other PECs are located in Atlanta, Le Mans, Los Angeles, Shanghai and Silverstone. The eighth and largest PEC is currently being built in Franciacorta, Italy. The opening is planned for mid 2021.

The Guinness World Records began on November 10, 1951, when Sir Hugh Beaver (1890-1967), Managing Director of the Guinness Brewery in Ireland, accompanied a hunt. After animated discussion, the hunters couldn’t find any reference in any book to indicate which bird is the fastest in Europe.

This experience gave Sir Hugh the idea for a promotional campaign designed to stimulate conversation in pubs. Guinness Superlatives was founded on November 30, 1954 and the first edition of the Guinness Book of Records was published in 1955.

The database currently contains over 53,000 records. Every year about 8,000 new records are added from around the world. The Guinness World Records Book is currently published in over 100 countries and more than 40 languages. A total of over 143 million copies have been sold so far.

  • Weststar introduces Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV

    Weststar introduces Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV

Since its introduction to the Nigerian market last year, the GLE SUV has become one of the most sought-after vehicles in its class, boosting SUV sales globally last year, and making the Mercedes-Benz SUV segment the strongest in sales for 2019. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO writes

IN response to the increasing demand for the mid-sized Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), Weststar Associates Limited, authorised general distributor of Mercedes-Benz in Nigeria, has announced the arrival of more units of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE SUV.

The GLE SUV featured top-notch innovations that completely reconceive the SUV trendsetter in comparison to its predecessors. Features like the E-Active Body Control, the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz assistance systems, the fully variable 4MATIC all-wheel drive which is now available for all GLE models, seating comfort with corresponding interior spaciousness and MBUX, have played a part in the success of the GLE SUV.

The exterior design of the GLE SUV exudes an incredibly powerful presence. The front view emphasises this with its upright radiator grille in an octagonal SUV interpretation; the prominent chrome-plated under guard and the bonnet with two powerdomes. The distinctive headlamp design is another key feature as it comes with Multibeam Led lights which cover a distance of more than 650 metres. The side view highlights the wide C-pillar typical of the GLE, large wheels in sizes from 18 to 22 inches and the pillared roof rails. The rear view on the other hand stands out with the rear lights, reflectors and chrome plated under guard.

The interior design of the GLE SUV is luxuriously elegant and powerfully progressive. It comes with a sporty and stylist cockpit design in the dashboard. The dashboard support flows into the door panels while the trim extends around the driver and front passenger areas to meet the doors. The sport steering wheel comes with a striking, sculptured spoke design emphasising the impressive appearance of the SUV’s interior. Other features include good ergonomics, flowing leather surfaces, a broad area of trim and flush-fitting sun blinds.

The GLE SUV comes with more space and it has a considerably longer wheelbase than its predecessor (2995 mm, plus 80 mm). This creates significantly more space, especially for passengers in the rear. Legroom in the second seat row has increased by 69 mm to 1045 mm. Headroom in the rear seats has been increased by 33 mm to 1025 mm. As a world first in the SUV segment, a second seat row with six fully electric adjustments is also available. Another key highlight is the luggage capacity which is up to 825 litres behind the rear seats and up to 2055 litres when the second seat row is folded down.

The Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) is another key highlight in the GLE SUV. Since its introduction in 2018, the infotainment system has kept on providing robust flexibilities and advancements in enhancing user experiences. The MBUX in the GLE SUV features two large 12.3-inch/ 31.2 cm screens as standard, which are arranged side-by-side for an impressive wide-screen look. The information from the instrument cluster and media display is easily legible on the large, high-resolution screens.

Users can set up the MBUX with four different styles from Modern Classic, Sport, Progressive and Discreet style. Key features of the MBUX in the GLE SUV include the widescreen cockpit, navigation services, smartphone integration, vehicle set up app, Linguatronic voice control, and Burmester surround sound system.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4MATIC comes with a 6-cylinder petrol engine systematically electrified with 48-volt technology (EQ Boost). It has an estimated output of 270 kW (367 hp) and torque of 500 Nm. In the GLE SUV, 4MATIC comes with fully variable all-wheel drive that controls the torque distribution between the front and rear axle from 0-100 percent depending on the selected driving mode and this greatly enhances the off-road capacity of the GLE SUV. In all variants of the GLE SUV, power is transmitted by the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission, the broad ratio spread of gears 1 to 9 allows a clearly recognisable reduction in engine speed and is a decisive factor behind the high level of energy, efficiency and ride comfort. The driving experience in the GLE SUV is further enhanced with the E-ACTIVE Body Control 48-volt suspension.

The latest generation of Mercedes-Benz assistance systems have been included in the GLE SUV. Boasting of unrivalled functions in its segment like the Active Brake Assist which helps the driver to brake in good time when approaching the end of a tailback.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Weststar Associates Limited Mirko Plath said: “The new generation GLE SUV has enjoyed a great amount of success in this market as our dealers continue to receive large orders for this product. Investment chat in a Rolls-Royce with Stephen Akintayo’ set to premier

    Our Reporter

A new show tagged Investment Chat in a Rolls-Royce with Stephen Akintayo is set to premiere on Nigerian screens and online via Youtube and Facebook on Sunday, November 22.

The show, produced with the sum of N30 million is directed by Bunmi Davies with Stephen Akintayo of the Gtext fame being the Executive Producer and Host. A first of its kind celebrity guest show, every week, the celebrity guest takes a luxurious ride with Akintayo in a Rolls-Royce while discussing matters of investment.

Speaking on what inspired the show, he said, “One of the reasons why we started this show was that we realised that investment conversations are quite boring. People all over the world are attracted to luxury, but they don’t know what goes on before luxury comes. We then decided to mix the two by showing our audience the luxury while telling them the truth about investment. That gets people’s attention and helps us educate people on investment in a fun, luxurious way.”

Going further, Akintayo, explained that while the show is not a one-stop-shop for everything about investment, it is majorly to get conversations on investment going, seeing as many consider the topic of investment uninteresting and sometimes technical. With screen icons and entertainment industry stakeholders speaking on investment, many more people are likely to listen, especially since many of them would be sharing from personal experience.

Going by the trailer, the audience is in for an engaging screen experience as already, personalities like star actress, Joke Silva; comedian cum actor, Gbenga Adeyinka GCFR; media personality cum politician, Dayo Adeneye; and screen icon, Ada Ameh; have been spotted taking a ride in a Rolls-Royce with Akintayo.
