United States electric car manufacturer Tesla will recall almost 30,000 vehicles imported into China due to suspension defects, China’s market regulator said.

The recall applies to all Model S and Model X cars imported into China from September 2013 to January 2018.

Defects in the suspension found in both models could “increase the risk of accidents,” the State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement.

In New York, shares in the fast-growing electric carmaker fell sharply on the Nasdaq following the announcement.

China is the world’s biggest auto market and the main growth driver for many car manufacturers — especially for Tesla, which intends to benefit from the country’s ambitious targets for reducing CO2 emissions.

Tesla’s Shanghai factory – its first outside the United States – produces its mid-price, mass-market offering Model 3, which it plans to begin exporting to Europe this month.

The firm said Wednesday that profits in the past quarter had more than doubled and forecast that deliveries would hit 500,000 this year.

The company reached out to the U.S. agency to notify it of the Chinese recall, stating that the matter was overblown.

According to a letter from Elizabeth Mykytiuk, Tesla’s managing counsel for regulatory affairs, obtained by Electrek, the automaker believes it was strong-armed into an unnecessary action. The EV firm told the NHTSA that the alleged suspension failures occurred in fewer than 0.05 percent of vehicles owned outside of China and only about 0.1 percent of all units sold in the PRC.

  • Toyota Highlander: Redesigned for comfort

    Toyota Highlander: Redesigned for comfort

Toyota Motor Corporation’s new Highlander makes big strides in the right direction, but it still has some drawbacks, reports TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO with agency addition.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander gets high marks for its superb comfort and above-average fuel economy. It feels confident on a winding road, and its responsive acceleration is useful for driving around town. It’s also comfortable on long-distance drives. But the Highlander suffers from a third-row seat that is confining and falls below the mark set by the top players in this segment.

But, it comes with a huge price N28million.

Aside from those made in China for local consumption, every Toyota Highlander (and Kluger, as it is known in Japan and Australia) is built in a factory in Gibson County, Indiana, that employs 7,296 Hoosiers.

For the year, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana retooled to build the fourth-generation Highlander and Highlander Hybrid around Toyota’s TNGA-K architecture and two powertrain combinations. Non-hybrid models receive Toyota’s ubiquitous 295-horsepower 3.5-litre V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission.

Car shoppers have more choices than ever for a three-row midsize SUV. But don’t forget about one of the crossovers that started it all. The redesigned Toyota Highlander steps back into the mix with key changes that uphold its spot as a solid pick in the class.

Meanwhile, the Highlander Hybrid uses a new system based around the tried and true 2.5-litere Atkinson-cycle I-4, two coaxially mounted electric motors, a battery pack mounted under the rear seats, and a sequentially “shiftable” CVT. Highlander’s hybrid drivetrain works in front- and all-wheel drive. Toyota claims it is smaller, lighter, and 24 percent more efficient than the previous generation, making the new Highlander Hybrid the class leader in fuel economy (move one size down, however, and the 2021 Sorento hybrid is slightly more efficient).

Between gas and hybrid, front- and all-wheel drive, and six trim levels, there are no less than 20 flavours of Highlander. No matter which one you choose, one will get Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, a suite of active safety systems that includes automatic braking capability, automatic high-beams, radar cruise control, lane departure assist, lane tracing assist, and road sign assist.

The Highlander is the top trim level, but give a lot for its price. Everything feels high-quality. Toyota’s infotainment system has taken a big step forward—this one looks cleaner and responds better than a lot of their past efforts.

The Highlander is a pleasant family appliance that’s missing that little X-factor.

The new Highlander is slightly longer than its predecessor, and that extra room increases the cargo space behind the third-row seat. Last year’s Highlander could only hold 13.8 cubic feet of gear behind the third row — one of the smallest cargo holds in the class. The extra room increases the Highlander’s carrying capacity to 16 cubes, which is more competitive though still far off from leaders in the segment.

Inside, there’s a standard eighth-inch touchscreen or a new 12.3-inch display on top-line Platinum trims. Perhaps even more important, both support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration this year. In the previous Highlander, you had to rely on Toyota’s underwhelming Entune system to fully connect your smartphone.

The Toyota Highlander, while competent, doesn’t raise the bar in any meaningful way. That leaves the door open for two newcomers – the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride – to woo auto lovers over with their bigger interiors and luxury-like designs.

The Highlander’s ride quality is plush. Large and small road imperfections are smoothed over thanks to the compliant suspension, yet it avoids feeling floaty or disconnected at higher speeds. The front seats are quite comfortable even on long drives, and the available second-row captain’s chairs deliver nearly the same amount of comfort. Alas, the third-row seats are one of the Highlander’s greatest liabilities. Thin padding, a very low seat cushion and narrow space make them ill-suited for adults.

Wind noise is well silenced on the highway, though, and road noise is minimal.

Ford is continuing to streamline and transform its global business, making changes in how the company is organised and operates to deliver executional excellence that benefits customers and delivers sustained profitable growth.

Jim Farley has succeeded Jim Hackett as Ford’s President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

He has outlined key goals and organisational changes during a virtual town hall meeting with the company’s global team.

Farley said Ford plans to move with urgency to turn around its automotive operations – improving quality, reducing costs and accelerating the restructuring of underperforming businesses.

At the same time, Ford, he said, will grow by “allocating more capital, resources and talent to its strongest businesses and vehicle franchises; expanding its leading commercial vehicle business with a suite of software services that drive loyalty and recurring revenue streams; offering compelling, uniquely Ford fully electric vehicles at scale around the world, including Transit, F-Series, Mustang, SUVs and Lincoln; adding more affordable vehicles to its global line up, including in North America and standing up new customer-facing businesses enabled by Argo AI’s world-class self-driving system.

“During the past three years, under Jim Hackett’s leadership, we have made meaningful progress and opened the door to becoming a vibrant, profitably growing company. Now it’s time to charge through that door.

“We are going to compete like a challenger – allocate capital to higher growth and return opportunities to create value – and earn customers for life through great products and a rewarding ownership experience.”

Ford also announced some key leadership changes.

John Lawler, 54, has been appointed as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), overseeing the Finance and Ford Motor Credit organisations.

Lawler succeeded Tim Stone, who has accepted a position as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer at ASAPP Inc., a research-driven, artificial-intelligence software company.

Stone will remain with Ford through October 15 to ensure a smooth transition.

  • Hyundai to recall Kona EVs over fire risk

Hyundai to recall Kona EVs over fire risk

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

Hyundai Motor Company plans to issue a voluntary recall on Korean-market Kona Electrics as it addresses potential manufacturing defects it’s worried might result in short-circuiting battery cells.

Roughly a dozen incidents of fire have been linked to the model, including isolated events in Australia and Canada, and the automaker is, particularly, keen to address them.

Asia has come down hard on battery fires, following a string of high profile examples where battery electric vehicles burnt themselves to the ground.

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has issued a statement confirming Hyundai’s plan to recall 25,564 Kona EVs manufactured between September 2017 and March, this year. The units will be inspected for defects before being issued obligatory software updates and a battery replacement, according to the government agency.

While the suspect batteries are produced by LG Chem, the company has shrugged its shoulders and claimed its cells aren’t to be blamed. Experiments operated collaboratively with Hyundai failed to replicate the circumstances necessary for a fire, which it believes absolves it of responsibility. However, it has committed itself toward helping the automaker in further testing to determine what’s creating the issue.

Hyundai has called the recall “a proactive response to a suspected defective production of high-voltage batteries used in the vehicles, which may have contributed to the reported fires,” noting that it’s going to do everything within its power to get to the bottom of this.

Korea’s recall kicks off on Friday.

  • Mercedes Benz sells 1.8m vehicles in nine months

Mercedes Benz sells 1.8m vehicles in nine months

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

In the first nine months of the year, Mercedes-Benz has sold 1,792,744 cars and commercial vans worldwide.

Due to the positive development of customer demand in many markets, global passenger car sales of Mercedes-Benz from July to September increased by 3.9 per cent compared with the prior-year quarter.

China continued to be the main driver of passenger car sales in the third quarter.

According to Britta Seeger, a Member of the Boards of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG responsible for Marketing and Sales, “Demand from our customers in the third quarter was significantly higher than we had assumed in March and April in view of the challenges posed by the pandemic. We are pleased with customers’ positive response to our models and the increasing demand in many markets. However, the third quarter also shows how regionally diverse the situation still is in the markets and for our dealerships. We will therefore monitor developments very closely in the fourth quarter, but the current level of demand is encouraging.”

Mercedes-Benz Vans delivered 95,933 vans for commercial use between July and September.

Global sales of 613,770 passenger cars from July to September were higher than in the previous-year quarter for the first time due to the positive development in China and rising customer demand in many other markets.

The attractive model portfolio and numerous measures taken by dealerships to respond best possible to customer inquiries and interest even during the COVID-19 pandemic provided additional sales support in the third quarter. In order to meet the high level of customer demand at short notice, dealerships’ inventories were reduced worldwide.

In Germany, the domestic market of Mercedes-Benz, sales in the past three months were higher than in the prior-year quarter for the first time this year.

“Rising orders received in particular for plug-in hybrids with the three-pointed star are a great customer feedback on our growing portfolio. From July to September, we had the first quarter so far with more than 10,000 xEVs delivered monthly by Mercedes-Benz Cars. The high demand for the electrified models has been sustained, especially in Europe,” Seeger said.

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

General Motors will take a swing at other electric trucks with the unveiling of the new GMC Hummer next month.

The presentation date has been  sheduled for October 20.

A report indicates that the automaker will show it during a major sports event.

According to AutoNews, the zero-emission Hummer will be presented during the first game of baseball’s 2020 World Series, probably in some short films that will be released simultaneously on multiple channels.

While the launch scheduled for next week, the new GMC Hummer is about a year away from entering production. The Detroit giant has confirmed that it will start assembling the zero-emission truck next fall with deliveries to commence shortly after, which will make it a 2022 model year.

The pickup’s powertrain is said to deliver a high-end supercar-rivalling 1,000 horsepower and a huge amount of torque, namely 11,500 pound-feet (15,592 Nm). As a result, it will sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) from a standstill in just  three seconds.

Other details on the powertrain have yet to be confirmed, but GM did say that it will have an all-wheel drive system with a clever feature that will allow it to move diagonally.

Dubbed the ‘Crab Mode’, it takes advantage of the fact that the front and rear wheels can steer in the same direction and will enhance the vehicle’s off-road capability.

PTONA seeks release of govt’s N10b

    Tajudeen Adebanjo

THE Public Transport Owners of Nigeria Association (PTONA) has called on the Federal Government to release the N10 billion palliative approved for transport owners.

The fund was meant to cushion the losses of the transport owners during the COVID-19 lockdown.

It would be recalled that during the lockdown, interstate and cross border transport operators were directed by the government to suspend operations.

PTONA said its members made huge revenue losses during the period.

During the six-hour meeting, the governing council of the association lamented the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic, armed robbery attacks and kidnappings on its business operations nationwide.

The council thanked the government for the approval, but frowned that, the fund is yet to be disbursed.

The operators appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to come to the aid of the road users, who are daily suffering untold hardships in the hands of the criminal element.

PTONA appealed to the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 to stop the 50 per cent seating capacity policy on interstate buses nationwide.

PTONA said: “Members reminded the government that, it is only its branded interstate buses that have been following and observing the guidelines in their buses. Other unorganised interstate buses, including the airlines, have since been loading full capacity without following the guidelines of social distancing. All the government ministries, departments and agencies are fully aware of

“Council regretted that in spite of the efforts of the security agencies to improve security in the country, the incidence of robbery attacks and kidnappings on the highways has actually escalated leading to the attacks on our members’ buses that have reached a frightening dimension, especially at Obajana Junction in Kogi state.

“Council also called for the removal of curfew on inter-state highway roads or scrap the nationwide curfew altogether. It also raises concern on traffic hubs such as Ojota swarming with thousands of passengers as late as early hours of the night due to traffic delays on roads.

“The PTF on COVID-19 is giving security agents more room to extort money from commuters and transport operators. The council meeting also called for 24 hours highway patrol police at places such as Obajana Junction to tackle the menace, as well as some other hotspots in the country.”

  • Rolls-Royce Ghost: ‘most comfortable, opulent’

    Rolls-Royce Ghost: ‘most comfortable, opulent’

    Tajudeen Adebanjo

THE new Rolls-Royce Ghost starts as a massive £208,000 and, unlike the previous BMW-based model, is made from an aluminium platform used for the Phantom and Cullinan Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).

The previous generation Ghost was built on BMW’s 7-Series platform and was, therefore, steel.

The new car, however, uses the same aluminium platform used for the Phantom and Cullinan SUV.

This has saved considerable weight, which the designers and engineers, have added by fitting extra sound deadening material (108kg of it) and other pieces there  to make the Ghost the quietest and most comfortable luxury car money can buy.

One of these parts is a 3kg lump of steel added to the upper front suspension wishbones to dampen  vibrations over bumps.

Underneath the bonnet sits a twin-turbo 6.75-litre V12 engine that replaces the previous Ghost’s 6.6-litre engine. Rolls used to avoid talk of horsepower but now the engine produces 563bhp and 627lb ft of torque.

As they say at Rolls-Royce, the power is “adequate”.

This is no facelift of the old car. The Ghost has four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering as standard so is more technically sophisticated than its Phantom big brother.

The team that designed the new Ghost described its styling as ‘post opulent’ – less showy than other luxury cars. The short front overhang is interesting, as is the way designers have kept panel joints to a minimum to give the impression the side is one big panel.

The radiator grille now has a one-piece surround and the flying lady rises up through the bonnet itself instead of being on top of the radiator.

There is of course a touchscreen but many operations are carried out via old fashioned controls. It’s the opposite of a Tesla. The quality of the interior is wonderful.

Stitching is kept to a minimum. One of the car’s options is the ‘starlight’ headliner with hundreds of little LEDs in it to make it look like the galaxy. It’s more tasteful than it sounds.

All the technology to make the Ghost smooth and silent has worked. The engine is barely audible and the gearbox is super slick. The four-wheel steering means changing direction at speed is nimble, and makes parking less cumbersome. For many owners, however, that will be the chauffeur’s problem.

What drivers and passengers alike will love is the great results of the engineers’ work to make the Ghost tackle even the bumpiest roads with hardly any disruption or noise.

It is without question one of the most comfortable cars in the world. Pity about the price, but then the comfort is that luxury cars, including Rolls-Royces, depreciate heavily. It just might take a decade or two before this one becomes affordable.
