Ford Mustang recalls broken brake pedals

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

A total of 38,005 Ford Mustangs will need to go back to the dealership as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published documents last week announcing a new recall for the pony car.

According to Ford and the NHTSA documents, the 2020 Mustangs in question may feature broken brake pedals.

During a “sudden stopping,” the brake pedal brackets may fracture and leave drivers with reduced stopping power.

However, the automaker said it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this new recall.

Ford noted the problem was only related to Mustangs with an automatic transmission.

According to the documents, the brake pedal bracket materials changed from nylon to polypropylene for Mustangs equipped with an automatic transmission. Ford cited “insufficient design margins” for the potential problem.

Mailed noticed began making their way to the 38,005 owners, which will instruct them to bring their car to a Ford or Lincoln dealer. There, a technician will replace the brake pedal bracket assembly free.

Firm fined $18m for inflating sales figures

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

Luxury automaker, BMW will pay a fine $18 million to settle allegations that it inflated its monthly sales numbers for five straight years in United States.

The Securities and Exchange Commission said the German luxury automaker kept a reserve of unreported sales that it drew on to meet monthly targets from 2015 to last year.

BMW said the misleading information while raising about $18 billion in several corporate bond offerings, the agency said.

“Companies accessing U.S. markets to raise capital have an obligation to provide accurate information to investors,” Stephanie Avakian, the SEC’s Enforcement Division director, said in a statement.

The actions helped BMW maintain a leading retail sales position among other luxury automakers, the agency said.

BMW of North America also improperly adjusted its sales reporting calendar in 2015 and 2017 to meet internal targets or bank excess sales for use in future months, according to the SEC. The reserve of unreported sales was referred to internally as “the bank,” the agency said. BMW also paid dealers to designate vehicles as demonstrators or loaners so that they could be counted as sales, the SEC said.

The SEC said that BMW cooperated with its investigation, even as the coronavirus outbreak forced it to close offices and make workers stay home. The cooperation was taken into account when the penalty was imposed, the agency said.

BMW AG, BMW North America and BMW US Capital did not admit or deny the agency’s findings. All three agreed to pay the fine and to stop violating securities laws.

In a statement, BMW said much of the conduct happened more than three years ago, and that it occurred due to negligence.

“There is no allegation or finding in the order that any BMW entity engaged in intentional misconduct. The BMW Group attaches great importance to the correctness of its sales figures and will continue to focus on thorough and consistent sales reporting,” the company said.

BMW is the second automaker in recent years to face penalties for inflating sales figures. Last year Fiat Chrysler agreed to pay $40 million to settle an SEC complaint alleging that the company misled investors by overstating its monthly numbers over a five-year period. The company inflated sales by paying dealers to report fake numbers from 2012 to 2016, the SEC alleged in a complaint.

  • BMW unveils M3 Sedan

    BMW unveils M3 Sedan

    By Tajudeen Adebanjo

The 2021 BMW M3 has arrived after a long build-up fraught with official teasers, unofficial leaked images, and countless spy shots.

While some people are ready to dismiss the car based on the front end styling alone, it’s worth noting that the new M3 improves on its predecessor in every measurable way (including grille size), likely putting it back near the top of the performance sedan pantheon.

As expected, the M3 adopts the same front end as the M4, which first debuted on the latest 4 Series Coupe. BMW enthusiasts who disliked the large kidney grilles on the 7 Series and X7 will feel the same about this new front end, but perhaps the rest of the car’s design can win them over. Plus, a European front license plate does wonders to mask the grille’s size.

Like the grille, the rest of the M3 is more aggressive than ever before. It features massive scoops and creases, car-inspired extended side sills, flared wheel arches, a lip spoiler, and enormous quad exhaust pipes. Standard M3 models ride on giant staggered wheels, 18-inches upfront, and 19-inches at the rear, with Competition models getting even larger 19- and 20-inchers. Several bold paint options are available, including the launch color, Isle of Man Green Metallic.

Inside, the M3 looks as we expected. BMW took the base 3 Series and added the usual M bits. There’s a different steering wheel with red M1 and M2 buttons, a new shifter with surrounding M drive mode controls, and more bolstered M sport seats that are available with ventilation for the first time. BMW also offers more aggressive M Carbon bucket seats (pictured on the M4), saving a whopping 21 pounds compared to the base chairs. Their race-inspired design allows drivers to install multi-point seat belts on track days, and they even come in a combination of black, teal, and neon.

Along with the crazy seats, BMW will fix one of our biggest gripes with the current M portfolio, the paddle shifters. The paddles on the current crop of M cars feel too small, but the M3 offers extended carbon ones that look much better.

As anticipated, the M3 borrows the S58 twin-turbo inline-six engine from the X3 M and X4 M. In the M3, it produces 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 48 hp over the outgoing model. The M3 Competition dials up the power even more with 503 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque.

BMW said the base car hits 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, with the Competition taking only 3.8 seconds. Extra attention has been paid to the exhaust on this model as well, so we expect it to sound much better than the outgoing M3.

Customers who buy the M3 core model will row their own gears with a six-speed manual transmission sending power to the rear wheels only. Competition models get an eight-speed automatic, sending the grunt to an M xDrive system. The all-wheel-drive system features an Active M differential, which can disable the power to the front wheels, enabling a RWD mode for smokey burnouts.

Some may say it’s England’s answer to America’s Jeep, but the latest Land Rover Defender offers its own sense of style and functionality.

Land Rover reopens the book on one of its most iconic nameplates with the all-new Defender. It’s boxy shape and retro details recall the 1950’s original and combine with Land Rover’s modern design language to create an appearance that’s sophisticated and nostalgic.

While the latest Defender looks like an ordinary crossover, it has serious off-road capabilities and rugged components that help it live up to its go-anywhere heritage.

The Defender boasts durable cabin furnishings, but also upscale materials and numerous luxury features.

Available in Nigeria, the Land Rover Defender completes the luxurious and versatile Land Rover family line up in the stable of Coscharis Motors.

According to Cletus Aregbeshola, the Marketing Manager for Coscharis Jaguar Land Rover, “not only is the new version driven by a passion and respect for the original, it also inherits the previous model’s naming convention”. Available now in 110 guise, which gives a historic nod to the 110-inch wheelbase of the previous generation, the Defender 110 body style offers customers a choice of five, six or 5+2 seating configurations and a load space ranging from 1,075 litres behind the second row, to 2,380 litres with seats folded.

While the Defender 110 body style is available in Coscharis showroom for customer viewing, the short-wheelbase Defender 90, with seating for up to six, is scheduled for introduction early next year.

Though at the Global and South Africa launches, the 110 line-up includes a flagship 3.0-litre straight six-cylinder P400 featuring efficient Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle technology with output of 294kW and 550Nm and a D240 twin turbocharged diesel producing 177kW and 430Nm.

Coscharis Motors is offering customers the options of two 2.0-litre variants, with a P300 turbocharged petrol offering 221kW and 400Nm.

A comprehensive model range is available, with four specification packs, including base Defender, S, SE and HSE models. Standard features in all versions include permanent all-wheel drive with a high- and low-range transfer box, air suspension, Terrain Response, LED headlights, Connected Navigation, 3D Surround Cameras, 10-inch Pivi Pro infotainment and a Driver Condition Monitor, among others.

A Defender 110 First Edition, available throughout the first year of production, is based on the SE model but adds standout features such as unique First Edition badging, illuminated tread plates, a Black Pack, 20-inch wheels, and a black contrast roof with sliding panoramic glass.

The First Edition also benefits from grained leather upholstery, a refrigerated centre console, domestic plug sockets and Configurable Terrain Response 2. It’s available in three exterior colours – Indus Silver, Gondwana Stone or Pangea Green.

Customers can also personalise their vehicle in more ways than any previous Land Rover with four Accessory Packs. The Explorer, Adventure, Country and Urban Packs each give Defender a distinct character with a specially selected range of enhancements.

Permanent all-wheel drive and a twin-speed automatic gearbox, centre differential and optional Active Locking Rear Differential ensure the Defender has the hardware required to tackle the harshest conditions in Africa.

A maximum wading depth of 900mm is supported by a new Wade programme in the Terrain Response 2 system, which automatically softens the throttle response, sets the heating and ventilation to recirculate cabin air, locks the driveline and adjusts the ride height to its off-road setting.

When exiting Wade programme the new Defender automatically drags the brakes, momentarily, to clean and dry the discs and ensure optimum braking performance is restored quickly after driving through deep water.

Land Rover’s advanced Clear Sight Ground View technology helps drivers take full advantage of Defender’s all-conquering capability by showing the area usually hidden by the bonnet and directly ahead of the front wheels, on the Pivi Pro touchscreen.

The new Defender raises the bar for both off road ruggedness and on-road comfort. It can negotiate city centres and suburbs as effortlessly as it can traverse the toughest mountain passes. Its carefully honed handling delivers both a rewarding drive and first-class long-haul comfort across all terrains.

Customers can contact our dealer outlets across Nigeria for pricing and specification listings.

Ford to build new electric F-150 at Dearborn site

Ford announced plans for  a new plant to build the electric version of its bestselling vehicle, the F-150 pickup.

The plant will be located in Ford’s massive Rouge complex, the company’s historic factory site in Dearborn, Michigan, just south of Detroit.

The new building will be a gleaming structure of glass and steel, a stark contrast to the hulking, nearly windowless steel buildings on the century-old site, where Ford has built iconic vehicles from the Model A to the Thunderbird and Mustang to the traditional gasoline-powered version of the F-150.

Ford says it will invest $700 million in the facility, which will assemble both the electric pickup and electric batteries. The plant will add about 300 jobs to the complex where more than 7,000 already work.

Production at the new plant is scheduled to begin in the middle of 2022. Many automakers, both traditional and upstarts, are planning electric pickups in the next few years.

The site of the new plant is surrounded on three sides by the Dearborn Truck assembly line, the body shop and the paint shop which produces the traditional F-150, the bestselling US vehicle for more than 40 years. The land under the new site once housed the plant that built the Ford Mustang, before that plant was torn down to make room for Dearborn Truck.

  • Hyundai to unveil new Tucson on Monday

Hyundai to unveil new Tucson on Monday

Auto lovers worldwide will today watch the premiere of the redesigned Hyundai Tucson via an online live stream. The 2022 compact Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is said to thrill many with dramatic reinvention and futuristic illumination, reports TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO with Agency addition.

Due to debut today, Hyundai’s upcoming compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) prepares to take “sharply styled” to a whole new level.

With its bold, triangular light signatures, the Tucson makes a strong first impression.

    Hyundai

Hyundai has just given auto lovers a first peek at the 2022 Tucson along with a few new details about the upcoming SUV.

Of course, many expected that the new Tucson would draw heavy inspiration from the Vision T concept, which came out at the 2019 LA Auto Show, but they are surprised to see the concept’s futuristic illumination make the seemingly impossible leap to production.

The front end of the SUV is dominated by a geometric, “jewel-like” grille that uses the automaker’s Parametric Hidden Light technology. This may be the same technology used on the new Hyundai Sonata – integrating lighting elements into the vehicle’s chrome brightwork, only revealing the SUV’s triangular light signature when illuminated. Also unclear from the stylised photos is whether these are the actual headlamps or just auxiliary daytime running lights.

Around back, more hidden light details are integrated into the aggressively sharp taillights, including a full-width light bar. Peer deeply into the shadowed images and one will also notice that the Tucson floats its oval-shaped H badge on the rear glass, rather than the more conventional sheet metal placement.

A bright, contrasting strip connects the A and D pillars, accentuating the roofline above the hint of muscular fenders bulging around 19-inch wheels. So far, the new Tucson looks amazing.

The interior design continues the SUV’s dramatic reinvention. Built around what Hyundai calls its “Interspace” design theme, the Tucson’s cabin emphasises spaciousness with its wraparound dashboard that is said to evoke a “futuristic boutique hotel.”

Just ahead of the steering wheel is a floating digital instrument cluster. Central in the cabin is a large 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation system, which appears much larger due to its integration into the vertical, glossy black “waterfall” center stack. Following the waterfall’s flow, one will also notice push-button controls for the transmission. Highlighting the cabin’s curves is a 64-color ambient lighting system with 10 levels of brightness.

The interior design is punctuated by a digital instrument cluster and a large 10.25-inch main display.

Bigger and wider than previous generation models, a long-wheelbase variant will be sold in the United States, as well as in China and Korea. Meanwhile, a shorter model will be available in Europe and the Middle East.

Last Tuesday, Hyundai shared the photos and showed how it took the new Tucson to various European proving grounds. They included dynamic tests at the famous Nurbürgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany, winter and trailer testing in Sweden and the Alps, and hot weather tasks in the baking Spanish sun. The Czech Republic also acted as a major proving ground for the Tucson, as Hyundai engineers took the SUV through various types of terrain to make sure the all-wheel-drive system is up to the task.

The team pushed the front end into the air to leave the body pointed at an angle. Then, they shut the doors to make sure they closed properly. Anything else would reveal body rigidity issues. The Tucson travelled across many different kinds of rough terrain, too, as engineers listened for noises. They would take their notes back to the office and work to reduce any unpleasantries on-board. The SUV even forded nearly 12 inches of water and towed a trailer through various hill inclines, all while purposefully stressing the clutch.

  • Nissan sells 500,000th Leaf electric cars

Nissan sells 500,000th Leaf electric cars

    Our Reporter

Nearly a decade after the model was launched, Nissan has reported that it’s produced more than 500,000 Leaf electric cars.

The milestone Leaf was produced at the automaker’s Sunderland, England, factory in August, but Nissan held off on announcing it until Wednesday to coincide with World EV Day.

The car will go to an owner in Norway — Maria Jansen.

“My husband and I chose to buy a Nissan Leaf back in 2018, and we loved it,” Jansen said in a statement. “We’re very excited to become the proud owners of the 500,000th Nissan Leaf. This car really meets our needs with extended range and enhanced technologies.”

Nissan launched the first-generation Leaf in December 2010, making it the first mass-market all-electric car to go on sale. The current, second-generation, Leaf was introduced for the 2018 model year.

While 500,000 electric cars is a noteworthy achievement, it’s taken Nissan much longer to reach that goal than originally expected. And it’s not the first EV to get there; the Tesla Model 3 passed that mark earlier this year.

Nissan originally targeted the production of 500,000 EVs by 2012, including the Leaf and other cars using its companion AESC battery technology. Including sales in China, it would have been even more.

Other electric models have been slow to materialise. Nissan sells the e-NV200 electric van in certain markets, and plans to launch the Ariya crossover as a 2022 model. An EV for Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand is expected as well.

It’s been less than a year and a half since the Leaf crossed 400,000 sales, though, and that’s a testament to the model’s extensive refresh for 2018. Sales have picked up in some of the Leaf’s global markets—like Europe, where it was the top-selling EV for the 2018 calendar year. But in the United States and elsewhere, the Tesla Model 3 has taken the lead in EV sales most months. Meanwhile, Nissan’s production in Smyrna has made Tennessee one of the hotbeds for EV production in the U.S. Volkswagen is now planning to bring ID.4 production to its Chattanooga factory in 2022.

  • Kia, Peugeot, Hyundai recall vehicles

    Kia, Peugeot, Hyundai recall vehicles

    Our Reporter

Hyundai Motors and its Kia Motors affiliate have initiated a voluntary safety recall for more than 2.2 million vehicles in North America – including more than 361,000 in Canada – for problems related to air bags and brake light safety switches.

The bigger recall – almost 2.1 million vehicles – is to fix a problem with a switch that might stop the brake lights from illuminating when drivers press the brake pedal. This recall affects most of the Korean automakers’ models from the 2007 to 2011 model years.

Also, the 2019 Peugeot Expert (KO series) van has been recalled in Australia due to two distinct faults.

More than 361,000 of the affected vehicles were sold in Canada – about 255,000 Hyundais and 106,098 Kias.

The United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the switch problem might also “cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal.”

Spokespeople for Hyundai Canada and Kia Canada said there have been “some” complaints but said there are no known reports of accidents or injuries.

Hyundai said it will send notifications to owners in June, as soon as enough replacements parts are available. Kia said it will send its notifications in May. Hyundai and Kia dealers will replace the switches free of charge.

Vehicles affected by the brake light switch recall include: Accent and Tucson, 2007 to 2009 model years; Elantra, 2007 to 2010 model years; Sonata, 2011 model year; Santa Fe, 2007 to 2011 model years; Veracruz, 2008 and 2009 model years; Genesis Coupe, 2010 and 2011 model years; Kia Rondo and Sportage, 2007 to 2010 model years; Optima, 2011 model year; Sorrento, 2007 to 2011 model years; Soul, 2010 and 2011 model years and Sedona, 2007 model year.

The other recall involves 186,254 Hyundai Elantras from the 2011 to 2013 model years sold in the U.S. No Canadian vehicles are involved.  That recall is to fix a potential air bag problem.

“A support bracket attached to the headliner may become displaced during a side curtain airbag deployment,” the NHTSA says. That could cause passengers to be cut. Hyundai dealers will notify owners. Adhesive strips will be applied free of charge, beginning in May.

According to Peugeot Australia, 25 examples have been affected by a fuel supply fault, while 42 have been affected by a rear brake fault.

The fuel supply recall and the rear brake recall were filed separately with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

“The fuel supply and return pipes located under the body may become damaged over time,” the first reads.

“The rear brake hose may become damaged over time, due to relative movement between the hose and holding clip,” according to the second.

Affected cars were sold between  December 1, 2018 and  May 31, 2019.

According to Peugeot Australia the recalls are precautionary, and there have been no known instances of fault recorded in Australia.
