    FG trains principals, headteachers in school management

    The federal government has trained principals, head teachers, and education officers across three Northern Nigeria geo-political zones on school management.

    The National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration workshop in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission focused on school management, stress management instructional leadership, and school culture.

    The participants were equipped with relevant adaptive leadership strategies, data-driven decision-making, technology integration, and innovative techniques to create conducive learning environments for academic excellence and inclusivity.

    Speaking during the opening of the five-day workshop in Mararaba, Nassarawa State, NIEPA acting director-general, Dr. Adebiyi Shofoyeke said the training was aimed at exposing participants to 21st-century planning, administration, and school management skills.

    Shofoyeke said the programme that was simultaneously taking place in Kano and Gombe states would equip the teachers, principals, education officers, and other stakeholders with needed skillsets that would make their work impactful.

    The Director of Educational Planning, Research and Development in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Obianuju Anigbogu said the workshop would further enhance the knowledge of education leaders to better manage schools and improve the quality of education in Nigeria.

    Anigbogu emphasized the significance of technology, adaptive leadership and data-driven decision-making to cultivate conducive learning environments that promote academic excellence.

    CJID to launch two Artificial Intelligence tools to aid journalism practice

    The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID), through its fact-checking, Verification, and Media Literacy programme, in collaboration with DUBAWA, is to launch two Artificial Intelligence tools to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of fact-checking processes for Journalists and writers in Africa.

    The launch of the Audio Platform and Chatbot which represent a significant contribution to the fight against disinformation is coming at a time when some actors are leveraging tech innovations around the world to improve their skills and strategies.

    According to the centre, the launch coincides with the CJID’s inaugural Journalism, and AI Conference scheduled to hold at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Abuja, from Monday, May 27th to Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

    The conference will bring together media think tanks, journalists, technology experts, and stakeholders to explore the challenges and opportunities arising from the continuous influx of AI technologies in the media landscape.

    Speaking on the conference, and the launch of the AI tools, Director of Programmes at the CJID, Akintunde Babatunde, said: “The media industry faces unique challenges in adapting to digital disruption while maintaining audience relevance and revenue sustainability.

    “As stakeholders navigate this complex landscape, it is critical to explore the implications of digital technology and AI on media practices, foster collaboration among industry players, and identify strategies for harnessing these technologies to drive innovation and resilience. Because of this, the CJID is convening stakeholders from across the media industry, technology sector, civil society, and television industry leaders to examine the challenges and opportunities presented by this convergence”.

    As false information increases across media platforms, the need for robust fact-checking tools has never been greater. DUBAWA’s new offerings promise to empower journalists, researchers, and the general public in their quest for reliable information.

    The DUBAWA Audio scheduled for launch is an AI-powered tool deployed to facilitate the claim-sourcing aspect of the fact-checking process. As such, this tool was carefully designed to automatically listen to your radio programmes, transcribe them and extract verifiable claims, saving Journalists, researchers, fact-checkers and other users’ valuable time.

    Complementing the audio tool is the DUBAWA Chatbot, which was built to answer everyday questions regarding viral misinformation and disinformation in the information ecosystem. It is useful in reducing the spread of harmful and misleading content online, providing results and references on a range of topics from credible sources.

    Overseas scholarship: PTDF assures on transparent, open selection process

    The Petroleum Trust Development Fund (PTDF) has assured on transparent, open and stress-free selection process for would be scholars and beneficiaries of its 2024 scholarship scheme.

    The Team Lead for the PTDF scholarship interview for the Southwest zone, Mr Tajudeen Ibiyeye spoke at the Faculty of Technology Development, Civil Engineering Department, University of Ibadan.

    He noted that various innovations had been introduced despite the large volume of applicants to make the process seamless and more rewarding for the applicants in line with the renewed hope agenda of the Federal Government. 

    He said out of the over 16, 000 applicants for the PhD and Msc scholarships, 5,733 candidates were shortlisted for the interview stage nationally with 953 shortlisted in the Southwest. 

    Ibiyeye said: “For the PhD, Msc overseas scholarship program of the PTDF this year we have shortlisted over 5,733 candidates nationwide, out of over 16,000 candidates that applied for the program. In Ibadan center which I represent, 953 candidates were shortlisted.

    “In line with President Bola Tinubu Renewed Hope Agenda, we have increase the awareness, we make sure that the process is more transparent, and we made sure that people have more confidence in the program, and part of what we are doing is to focus on Mr President Renew Hope Agenda which deals with the transition from fuel to renewable energy and Compressed Natural Gas kn the choice of areas of scholarahip works for our scholars.

    “With that we are ensuring that we select more candidates that will help in championing the renewable energy sector and carry out researches that will provide home grown solution to our challenges in the renewable energy sector so as to achieve Mr President’s Renew Hope Agenda.”

    One of the panelists that carried out the interview for the shortlisted applicants, Dr Nuru Makushi said the programme is a major leap for the country to reduce the number of expertrates and foreigners who are dominating the renewable energy, oil and gas sector by providing trainings for Nigerians through scholarship. 

    Makushi, who also benefitted from the overseas scholarship scheme for his Masters and PhD programmes an lectures at the Bayero University, Kano said he decided to return to the country to help contribute his quota to improving manpower despite the various offers he got from abroad after his programmes.

    He appealed to those who would benefit from the scheme to also take a leaf from him, adding that aside from signing a bond with the PTDF, patrotism must be played up.

    “I benefitted from the overseas scholarship of the PTDF both for Masters and PhD, I did my Masters in Scotland, Institute of Petroleum, and my PhD was in London, South Bank University. 

    “As an Ex-scholar, we have the experience and the capacity to basically know their technicality and the capacity of many applicants. So we were engaged to participate in this selection committee which even though rigorous but we have recorded successes.

    “PTDF, as a parastatal from the ministry of Petroleum, the idea is to have more capacity building in Nigeria to solve indigenous problems. PTDF sponsors individuals to become experts and specialists in different oil and gas related courses, both in the industrial and academic areas.

    “We select the best applicants. The best are basically those who benefit from the PTDF. we select from the state level, so different applicants from different states are the ones that are selected and are sent overseas o basically have their Masters and PhD programmes, which I believed helps to solve most of our problems in the industries and Academia.

    Speaking on if bond is enough to ensure the scholars return to the country, the ex-scholar said: “Bonds and patriotism are related in some ways built I think, if you are not patriotic, even if you are bonded, you will not return. If you are not patriotic, then there is a problem. If you are bonded you can’t run away, so you have to be patriotic for you to come back to the country. There is so much money and opportunities there but you have to show patriotism to Nigeria.”

    One of the interviewed applicants for the Msc programme, Idowu Adedapo commended the process and the seamless manner with which it was conducted expressing confidence in the transparent and honesty of the panel to shortlist the best hands for the scholarship.

    UBEC to host Edutech conference to revitalise education system

    The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) is set to host the 6th edition of the African Education Conference (Edutech) aimed at proffering solutions on revitalising the education system using technology and innovations.

    The Chairman, Board of Trustee, Education First Nigeria, Dr Macjohn Nwabiaola, at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, underscored the importance of technology in upscaling educational needs of the people.

    Nwabiaola, who was a former Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, said there was a need to come up with speed with global trend as well as change the narratives in our educational pursuit.

    He said: “We are in a world where things are changing and we must ensure that our children can be enabled to compete globally when it comes to education.

    “Some years ago when our students sit for JAMB, it was paper and pencil examination but gradually we made it a Computer Based Test (CBT) which was criticised but here we are CBT has come to stay.

    “Edutech is very critical and we need to look at our policies in education, we need to bring all stakeholders and it will be holistic as children with special needs will be involved.”

    Nwabiaola explained that the education sector was faced with a lot of challenges that must be solved through collaborations.

    Founder, Education First Nigeria, Moses Imayi, said the organisation and Skool Media had supported over 110 educational institutions through setting up of digital their centres.

    Imayi said the goal was to put technology at the heart of learning in schools across the country, noting that this centres had helped to bridge digital gaps.

    He said: “The conference is an opportunity to mobilise stakeholders to begin to look at the importance of education because if you invest in education, you are investing in the country’s socio-economic development.

    “The conference will serve as a platform to mobilise every stakeholders to begin to popularise the importance of education.”

    The Coordinator, UBEC Digital Resource Centre, Prof. Bashir Galandaci, said the commission underscored the importance of technology in learning which crystallised the basis for hosting the conference.

    Galandaci said UBEC had introduced several digital programmes with the aim of radically transforming basic education in the country.

    The African Edu-Tech Conference is an annual event dedicated to exploring the relationship between education and technology in Africa.

    It provides an essential platform for experts, policymakers, educators, and innovators to collaborate and drive positive change in the educational landscape.

    The goal is to facilitate discussions on leveraging collaboration and partnerships to build sustainable growth in educational technology on the African continent.

    The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has officially approved the use of “Career Paths and Opportunities for Engineering, Science, Art, and Management Students” in the curriculum of all secondary schools throughout the state.

    This approval was confirmed via a letter signed by Adedamola Abatan on behalf of the Permanent Secretary.

    The author, Sheriff Lamidi said the comprehensive guide aims to equip students with the essential knowledge to make informed career choices.

    Lamidi emphasised that this approval is a significant advancement in improving educational quality and preparing students for the complexities and competitiveness of the global job market.

    “With this book now part of the recommended reading list for Lagos secondary schools, students will have access to a valuable resource that examines various career paths in engineering, science, art, and management. The book combines career guidance, practical examples, and actionable advice, making it an indispensable tool for students, teachers, and counselors,” Lamidi explained.

    The principal and owner of the school, Adams Adebola praised the students for their perseverance and outstanding achievements.

    The top student, Eyinle Adedolapo, received three hundred thousand naira.

    Adeyemo Ridwan, who also won two hundred thousand naira, expressed his joy, saying, “Today is a remarkable day in my life. It reminds me that there is always a reward for every action you take.”

    Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo has honoured Ondo West federal constituency representative Dr. Abiola Makinde with the prestigious fellowship award of the University.

    PTDF screens 606 applicants in Bauchi for foreign scholarships

    The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) has shortlisted 606 applicants who are competing for Masters and Ph.D foreign scholarships, for physical screening at the Bauchi centre.

    Speaking at the screening at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU in Bauchi, Suraju Abdullahi Fari, the team lead of the fund, noted that the screening is taking place across six states within the country.

    According to Fari, 606 candidates have been invited for screening for second and third degree programmes.

    He explained that the applicants were selected through an online application managed by a computerised system and verified by the fund’s independent consultant to ensure transparency.

    Fari stated that the selected applications must focus on oil and gas or renewable energy to address some of the nation’s energy challenges.

    “For transparency and fairness, we conducted the application process online, where initial selections were made by a computer system. These selections were then reviewed by our staff and vetted by independent consultants. We also invited a panel of experts from various universities and industries, including Shell and Chevron,” he said.

    Also, one of the panelists, Dr. Usman Hassan, the Head of Department, Petroleum Engineering, at ATBU, said most of the proposals of the applicants interviewed were relevant to the oil and gas industry.

    Chairman, Board of Directors of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company Plc, Dr. Seinde Oladapo Fadeni, has donated a multi-million naira library block to the Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ikeji -Arakeji, Osun State.

    The three-storey structure, the biggest on campus, will cater for the library needs of all departments in the school.

    Speaking at the hand-over of keys of the library to the President, CAC Nigeria & Overseas, Pastor Samuel Oladele, Fadeni said it is important that students be assisted to learn, especially with the high level of distractions in the modern world.

    He stated: “The students don’t want to read anymore; and you can’t really blame them. In someone’s phone alone, you can find about 10 social media apps. The world is becoming something else. But those who are ready to read, who are ready to study and to focus, we should assist them in achieving what they want to achieve.”

    The NAHCO Chairman promised to make the library conducive and equipped as a modern learning facility for all cadres of students from undergraduate to doctorate levels.

    Fadeni assured the CAC hierarchy, including the President, Oladele; Pastor E.O. Adejobi, the General Superintendent and Prophet Hezekiah Oladeji, the General Evangelist, all present at the event, that he would still do more than just donate the building.

    He declared: “The physical body is there. I have given you my word; by the grace of God, whatever is supposed to be in a modern library, the computers, the shelves, and other things would be provided.”

    The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olasebikan Alade Fakolujo, extolled the virtues of the NAHCO Chairman pointing out that such acts of kindness and generosity that Fadeni exhibited exemplify his commitment to education and societal progress.

    He said: “Today, we have this magnificent edifice, which stands out of all the structures on campus and compares favourably with some of the best library building in the first – generation universities in Nigeria, as fulfilment of the promise made by the donor. The Dr. Fadeni Library is a multi-million naira three-storey building, which at this particular time is praiseworthy. The gesture is dear to us as a university community.”

    Fakolujo pointed out that there was no iota of doubt that one of the critical challenges facing Nigeria today is the lack of modern library facilities that support development and strengthen the country’s university education system.

    He noted that by investing in a library for Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Dr. Fadeni is indirectly also contributing to the strengthening of not only the country’s university system, but also the very bedrock of nation building.
