  • Osamede to premiere at Cannes film market

Osamede to premiere at Cannes film market

Nigerian historical fantasy ‘Osamede’ is scheduled to screen at the 2025 Cannes Film Market on May 17, 2025 at the Pavillon Afriques.

The significant milestone for Nigerian cinema on the international stage will see award winning director,  James Omokwe getting his flowers.

The AMVCA winner James Omokwe, who is responsible for ‘Chetam,’ ‘Ajoche,’ ‘Riona,’ ‘Itura,’ and ‘Osamede,’ will be joined at the event by the executive producer Lilian Olubi.

‘Osamede’ follows the story of an orphaned girl who discovers superhuman powers in 1897 during colonial Benin Kingdom. Her mission: to harness the power of the ancient Aruosa stone and liberate her people from British colonial control.

“Nigeria has exported music and films globally, but with Osamede, we’re revolutionising how African historical narratives are presented by bringing the legendary Benin Empire’s mythology to life with production values and storytelling that mirror Hollywood fantasy epics.” says Olubi, who will also speak on the Cannes panel, ‘Beyond Budgets: Innovative Funding for Filmmakers.’

The film features Ivie Okujaye Egboh, Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, and Alexander Bud.

‘Osamede’ represents a unique stage-to-screen evolution, building on the theatrical production staged 12 times to sold-out audiences by Olubi’s Gold Lilies Productions. This adaptation process gives the film a pre-tested narrative foundation similar to successful Broadway-to-screen adaptations.

Director James Omokwe adds,”Osamede goes beyond a fantasy film set in Africa, with this film, we’re reclaiming our historical narrative through the fantasy genre. What ‘Black Panther’ did for Afrofuturism, we’re doing for African historical fantasy rooted in actual Benin Kingdom mythology. Our approach combines authentic cultural elements with cinematic spectacle in ways audiences haven’t seen before.”

The film’s international debut comes as Nigeria’s cinema industry continues to expand globally. This expansion resonates with the vision behind Nigeria’s ‘ScreenNigeria’ initiative to increase the country’s cinematic footprint abroad. ‘Osamede’ joins ‘My Father’s Shadow’ to make Nigerian films that will screen in Cannes’ Official Selection.

K1 de Ultimate unhappy with Kollington over absence at mum’s burial

Fuji music icon King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal aka K1 the Ultimate has publicly criticised the co-founder of the music genre Alhaji Kollington Ayinla for failing to attend his mother’s funeral or show support.

K1 said his anger stems from what he views as a betrayal by someone he had supported in the past.

“The only reason I’m angry at Alhaji Kollington is because when his mother and Barrister’s mother died I was there for them,” K1 told Agbaletu TV. “But when my mother died, Alhaji Kollington gave an un‑genuine excuse of ‘I called you and you didn’t pick up.’”

K1 recalled that he had joined hands with Kollington to ensure a dignified farewell for Kollington’s own mother.

“I moved everybody, the deputy governor was on seat and I handled all the finances one hundred percent,” he said.

He expressed disbelief that Kollington, who was hale and hearty and not abroad at the time, ignored his mother’s burial totally.

“What could have happened that made him not attend my mother’s burial?” K1 asked.

Why I’m angry with Kollington, by K1 De Ultimate

Fuji singer K1 De Ultimate has expressed deep disappointment and betrayal over fellow music icon Kollington Ayinla’s absence at his mother’s burial ceremony.

K1 in an interview on Agbaletu TV, revealed that he had gone above and beyond to support Kollington during a similar moment of loss, footing the entire bill for Kollington’s mother’s burial and rallying high-profile guests to attend the event.

K1 questioned why Kollington would disregard him in such a way, especially since he is in good health and based in Nigeria.

According to K1, the excuse that Kollington had called him and didn’t get a response from him didn’t sit well with him, leaving him feeling angry and hurt.

“I am so angry with Alhaji Kollington because he never showed up to offer his condolences when I lost my mum.

“When his own mother passed away, I supported him to give his mum a befitting burial. I brought a lot of dignitaries to the burial for him and I handled all the finances 100%. See how he paid me back.

“He is in Nigeria, hale and hearty and the only excuse he gave was that he called me and I didn’t pick up. Am I not supposed to be angry?”
