And hip-hop music—Drake and Lil’ Wayne, down to Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy. All these people inspire my music. I can see this vast flexibility. They have this flexibility in their sound. Even Michael Jackson—[it’s] like they can make so many types of music. And that kind of inspired me to also spread my wings because I want to be able to tap into different levels of artistry, and different levels of making music.

“I’ve loved global music from the jump. I’ve always loved global music. So that’s why I try, as much as possible, to do what I want, to be on different types of beats, and different types of sounds. And it’s still all me. I just bring myself. I just bring myself to this sound. It’s still Magixx,” he said.

You have millions of DJs working globally every hour, every day, every minute servicing mixes, remixes, performing at festivals on big stages, on radio… and they are making sure the music is getting to where it needs to get to, with a different vibe. We’re going to continue preaching this ministry, until the world understands that without the DJs, there’s no party.”

No real love in entertainment industry, says Adenike Adeniji

Rising Nigerian promoter in the UK, Adenike Adeniji aka Anik Entertainment has opined that there is no real love on the Nigerian entertainment scene.

In a recent chat, Adeniji opened up about the challenges she faced when starting out as an entertainment promoter saying, “Promotion is a very tough job and you have to be strong, and also be a very hard working person to delve into this type of profession or business. It’s tough getting other promoters to support you when you are new in the business. You barely see someone that will genuinely love you, support you or your brand especially when you are upcoming and you are just starting.”

Explaining her foray into show promotions, a predominantly male dominated industry, Adeniji said, “I’m a lover of good music and I’m so much in love with entertainment. Right from onset I’ve always loved entertainment. I once acted in about two home video movies in 2005 but I got discouraged by my parents who did not encourage me so I quit. Right now, I promote events. I bring in artists into the UK for shows. I still love acting, but I’m planning to go into movie productions and become a producer. I’m currently working on some movie projects.”

Speaking about her visions for her brand, Anik Entertainment, Adeniji said, “I’m just taking things one step at a time, especially when it comes to this entertainment industry. Promoting, acting, movie production, I want to take things easy as much as I can, because I realized that the industry is mostly filled with fake people. They don’t love you, it’s mostly about fake love. And me, I’m a lover girl. I love love, and me, I like to be real and transparent with people. But I see myself doing more movie productions.”

Sound Sultan: Remembering the 6ft entertainer four years after

If Olanrewaju Abdul-Ganiyu Fasasi aka Sound Sultan was alive today, he would have expanded his self-styled #EdideEmuSariJe bant with many corporate organisations backing his ideals.

Sadly, Sound Sultan is no more. He passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2021 in the United States of America, after a brave battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The lanky singer, rapper, songwriter, comedian, producer and actor, who stood at 6ft 4inch while alive, would have discovered more young and upcoming talents, probably produced more films, recorded more songs, and made more money with his investment in the Lagos Islanders Basketball Club. He would also have been looking forward to his 48th birthday on November 27.

But as it is with the world, people move on a few months after anyone and everyone’s passing. Many promises from friends, associates and family might have gone with the wind and gram!

However, Sound Sultan’s lovely widow, Chichi Morah, also known as Faridah Fasasi is doing well, while his three lovely children, Mayowa, Bidemi, and Zara are growing faster than many know.

In furtherance, one man took a liking to Sound Sultan while alive and has vowed to keep his legacies and memory alive. The man, Idris Olorunnimbe, is the founder and Group Chief Executive of The Temple Company and Ogidi Studios.

Following Sound Sultan’s passing in 2021, Olorunnimbe, who knew about the singer’s passion for his Islamic beliefs and contribution to the religion, inaugurated the Sound Sultan Ramadan lecture. The annual lecture is to keep the memory of the devoted entertainer alive while Islamic scholars offer prayers for the repose of his soul with his family in attendance.

To this end, The Temple Company has held four editions of the event since Sound Sultan’s passing with some of the late entertainer’s colleagues attending.

Wednesday, March 6, 2024 herald the fourth Sound Sultan Ramadan lecture. The event held at the Temple Management headquarters on Victoria Island, Lagos and had in attendance, Idris Olorunnimbe, L.A.X, Bisola Aiyeola, Bisola Bata, Mimi Onalaja, Tunde Folawiyo, Sheerafat Andu (Arabel boss), Rasheed Muri Okunola, amongst other individuals.

The National Missioner of the Ansar Ud Deen society of Nigeria, Sheikh AbdulRahman Ahmad, was also in attendance to lead in prayers and deliver a Ramadan lecture.

While alive, Sound Sultan defied the notion that the consumption of alcohol, cigarette, cannabis and other vices are a must on the road to fame, stardom, and fortune on the entertainment scene. He proved the notion wrong as he remained not only true to his values and he was for most of his life a non-smoker and teetotaller till death. He never engaged in any vices till his passing at the age of 44. Rather, Sound Sultan set an example as one of the few Nigerian entertainers in Hip Hop, who practiced Islam.

Reminiscing on Sound Sultan’s life as a true Muslim, actor, and comedian, Tomiwa ‘Sage’ Kukoyi says, “During every Ramadan since 2010 #EdideEmuSariJe was a bant we all jumped on, on Twitter. Egbon would tweet this at Tahajjud hours and at Sahur. He would do a little giveaway for those who fasted. But in all, SoundSultan Lived heavily, like a true Muslim, lived a life of service.”

Gospel musician Mercy Chinwo sues VDM for alleged defamation

Gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has filed a defamation lawsuit against blogger Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The suit stems from alleged defamatory statements by VDM on social media, accusing Chinwo of involvement in a contractual dispute and the purported diversion of $345,000 linked to her former record label boss, Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, also known as Eezee Tee.

The lawsuit, filed by Pelumi Olajengbesi, Chinwo’s legal representative, seeks an order compelling VDM to delete, retract, and issue a public apology for all allegedly false and defamatory statements made against Chinwo and her brand.

In support of her claims, Chinwo furnished the court with documentary evidence, including emails and payment receipts, to substantiate that VDM’s allegations are entirely false.

On February 17, 2025, a Federal High Court in Lagos held that the arrest warrant against Ee Zee Tee over alleged fraudulent conversion subsists and adjourned the case until March 6, 2025 for the arraignment of the record label boss.

In the fresh defamation suit filed, Olajengbesi said VDM made the posts without provocation and  apparent intention of lowering the Chinwo’s estimation in the eye of right-thinking members of the society.

He told the court that the VDM’s videos and posts are false and have caused significant harm to the Chinwo’s public image, reputation, professional standing and emotional well-being.

The lawyer said VDM made the posts on his Instagram handle on 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 12th and 17th February 2025 accusing Chinwo of “going behind the record label to go and collect shows, she was collecting gigs and she was not remitting money to the record label”.

In the suit, Olajengbesi said VDM posted a series of videos to millions of followers showing a “caricaturist and disdainful portrayal of the Claimant (Chinwo) as well the Defendant’s (VDM’s) bias towards the claim of Mr. EeZee T thereby deliberately ridiculing the position of the Claimant in the dispute between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T”.

“The Claimant avers that she has neither had any form of relationship with the Defendant nor was the Defendant involved in the issue between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T in any material particular.

“The Claimant avers that the statements which the Defendant made in the videos he published his Instagram page were as though the Defendant was personally involved in the issues between the Claimant and Mr. EeZee T; however, these statements were not only false, but damning and injurious to the Claimant’s public image and reputation.”

The lawyer sought “an order of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to remove the defamatory posts from all his social media platforms.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to cause a retraction of the said defamatory statement in favour of the Claimant on all his social media platforms and to publish an unreserved apology to the Claimant in two widely circulated national dailies and all his social media platforms.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendants to write an unreserved apology to the Claimant and publish same in four national dailies, causing same to run for at least 14 consecutive days.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant the Sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) only as General Damages for defamation.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant, the Sum of N100,000,000.00 (One Hundred Million Naira) only as Punitive and Aggravated Damages for the grossly defamatory statement.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay the sum of N25,000,000.00 (Twenty-Five Million Naira) as the cost of this suit.

“AN ORDER of this Honourable Court directing the Defendant to pay 10% (Ten percent) on the judgment sum per annum until final liquidation of the judgment sum by the Defendants.”
