I don’t like military incursion but happy with Gabon coup, says Fayose

A former governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has said he is ‘very happy’ with developments in Gabon after soldiers seized power in the oil-rich Central African nation.

Speaking on why he does not like military incursion in politics, Fayose attributed the current spate of coups in the continent to sit-tight syndrome and suffocated democracy.

He explained in an interview on Channels Television, monitored by The Nation correspondent that the military junta was imminent going by how a single man spends two to four decades in power.

Speaking about the case of Nigeria intermittently, the 62-year-old politician underscored the growth of “our democracy over the years though not yet perfect.”

He said: “I am very happy with what happened in Gabon. I don’t like military incursions in politics but I want to say to you, Nigeria is different. Because in Nigeria, we have reasonably stabilised the democracy.

“We might have our flaws. Remember that, now in Nigeria, you can see uninterrupted democratic process. You can see that, you know after four years, there’ll be an election.

“Nigeria has gone from one party to another party. One person to another person in a space of time.

“But in a country where one man is spending 30, 20, 40 years; they must boot him out of the place.

“Whichever way, that’s different from Nigeria setting. Nigeria, we have submitted but we are not there yet in the final order. But again, Nigeria is a 200 million population, Gabon is 2.5 million. Ekiti is even more than Gabon.

“The military coming in should equally allow a process, a transition, possible shortest transition to allow these things to be perfected. You can’t spend more than a particular number of years.

“We cannot downplay the whispers and some daring insinuation by some for a coup, anyone who hears about the same without reporting it deserves to be killed.

He added: “But don’t compare it with Nigeria. I’m not saying anything cannot happen. No coup. Nigerians when you talk here, they’ll go and report; they’ll come and carry you in the house. Because the moment you hear about a coup, and you do not report it, let me say to you; you deserve to be killed.”

Be humble and respectful to your predecessors, actor Patrick Doyle tells Burna Boy

Veteran actor Patrick Doyle has belittled the successes and efforts of Grammy award-winning singer, Burna Boy, in the industry.

This comes a few days after the singer accused Nigerians of not valuing him nor knowing his worth.

Burna Boy, having done so much in the music industry, is disappointed with the level of regards given to him in the country.

However, in a post via Facebook, Patrick Doyle said Burna Boy and his colleagues should ascribe the credit for their feats to great musicians who paved the way for them.

The movie star said that Burna has not done anything by himself that can be remotely described as outstanding because he and other Nigerian singers are recipients of the past musicians.

Doyle added that Nigerian singers need to be humble and respectful of their diligent predecessors like Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek, Ik—Dairo and many others who paved the way from the ’60s to the 2000s.

He wrote: “The credit for the feats that appear to be puffing the likes of Burna Boy up have to be properly ascribed to the greats who cleared the thorny paths that have created pathways for his likes to walk through practically effortlessly.

“Burna Boy has not by himself done anything that can be remotely described as great. He and his peers are recipients of the labours of heroes past.

“They need to be humble and respectful of their diligent and truly pioneering predecessors. Great artistes like Sunny Ade, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek , I, k. Dairo and a galaxy of others who paved the way from the 60s, to the 2000s. Greatness and great feats don’t exist in a vacuum. Let us not contribute to the creation of an arrogant and obnoxious monster.”

“Trusting yourself is so key, and I’m not going to stop trusting my guts just because people can see me now. It’s like being in a zoo. The animals don’t change their behaviour just because you’re looking at them. They’re always going to be who they are. So why should I change?”
