  • Production crews are underpaid in Nollywood – Kola Munis

Production crews are underpaid in Nollywood – Kola Munis

Nollywood filmmaker and script writer, Kola Munis, has drawn attention to the prevailing issue of inadequate payment for movie production crew.

Munis, a co-producer for Showmax’s series ‘Crime and Justice’, shed light on the challenges faced by the crew members, who work tirelessly behind the scenes.

Speaking with The Nation in a recent interview, Munis asserted that the lack of fair compensation for the production crew has become a concerning trend for many.

He said: “Imagine shooting in Lagos and you get to settle area boys, the huge hotel and location bills, travel and all that. When people hear the budget, they get excited thinking that it’s a lot of money.  It’s not. Producers are actually being paid peanuts to work miracles, so I wouldn’t say the filmmakers or their productions are making that much money. In general, the whole industry needs to be  better respected and lifted up.”

Continuing, he said, “I’d hate to be the producer of a movie and I’m paying the makeup artist almost nothing. But in Naija, because you are so desperate and you want to get into the industry or even just build your career, you are willing to accept anything. But it shouldn’t be like that normally. We should be trying to lift each other up, not exploiting ourselves.

“In ‘Crime and Justice’ for instance, some of us sacrificed in many ways, including pay,  just so that some of the members of the cast and crew got paid at least close to what they deserved to be paid. They too have bills to pay, families to feed. We did that only because some of us could afford to. Not because our pay was anything special, but because we are earning money in other ways. I think there’s a lot of discontent in the filmmaking industry with regards to the returns that they get from the cinemas for instance. But the cinemas will rightly tell you that they have to cover their costs, which to be fair, no one can argue with.”
