Famously known for her role as Motunde in Mr Macaroni’s skit where she presents several men for marriage, Motunde Sogunle, a jovial thespian and podcaster speaks on the similarities between both characters, her upcoming projects, among other exciting topics in this interview with ADENIYI ADEWOYIN.
How do you balance maintaining your privacy and living in the public eye?
It’s just me. I’ve literally been popular from primary to secondary school so somehow it’s been like I’ve always been in the public eye so I think I’ve been able to manage it right from time. I’m just me, I just live life the way it comes. I don’t have to have a double personality, I am just myself, it’s just me living life.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to sleep but if I’m not sleeping I am watching movies. I really love watching movies. I’m actually an animation fan so I am either watching an animation or one cartoon or the other. I ,like my private time so if I’m not acting I just want to be home either sleeping or watching movies.
You are more famous for acting Motunde in Mr Macaroni’s skit, how did you clinch that role?
We’eve actually done things together before but that particular father and daughter role started from an advert, the very first one with Baba D. He was the one that came up with the idea anyway and the reception was very nice so we just decided to make it a thing so that’s how we came about daddy and daughter.
Are there similarities between the Motunde in skit and in reality?
The Motunde in the skit is very happy and I am also a very happy person in reality. The things I do in the skits are just like my natural self, the responses, the gestures and others are my natural self and yes there might be some similarities but I might not particularly actively be looking for a husband but yea I want to settle down.
In what ways has your role in Mr Macaroni’s skit affected you either positively or negatively?
Positively, it has really put me out there and the fact that I am using my real name I feel like I created a connection between me and people who get to see me and they get to call me, I feel like they know me. It affected my life positively. Negatively, I don’t think so. I’ve not had any so far but I am very grateful for the role and I tell him (Macaroni) everytime because its’ opened doors for me, I walk into a space and people know me.
You also have a podcast where you mostly discuss s3x. What prompted your choice of theme for that podcast and how has the acceptance been?
My podcast is called ‘Bed Talk’ and it’s not only about s3x; we talk politics, we talk religion, we talk lifestyle, s3x and everything including trending gists. But because of where it’s situated, like friends just having discussions in the bedroom, that’s why I called it ‘Bed Talk’. I want to believe that the one you’re referring to is that I was just an actor and is basically s3x education.
Going by your podcast, you seem to know a lot about s3x, does it mean you are a s3x freak or it’s just for the job?
I was just casted for that. I am not a freak, it was just a job and I think I did it very well for you to be asking me those questions. Kudos!
What is the best advice you can give anyone?
Best advice; be you! Be yourself, it might sound very cliché but trust me the minute you start to live you every other thing will fall in place but the minute you’re beginning to be somebody else you will just notice that you’re literally going to be lagging, so just be you. I’ve always lived by that, I walk into a space as myself so you can’t intimidate me because I am myself and I am not lying to myself.
Was there ever a time when you thought about quitting acting altogether?
Yes when I graduated from studying theater arts in school and going for auditions back to back I was frustrated and said i’m not doing this anymore and then I did like three or four jobs, I worked in a local government, I worked in a fashion store, I worked in an insurance company and then I finally worked in a law firm. It was while I was working as a PA/secretary I just started missing the whole acting thing because I’m a fan of stage and then I decided that I’m just gonna go back to my first love but that period was not easy because after going for auditions back to back nobody tells you to wait behind but I am grateful for where I am now.
What is the worst thing about being a celebrity? To be honest I don’t think there’s anything bad. So far for me, let me talk personally, I’m myself I live my life the way it comes, I’m not fronting. I can easily walk into an amala joint or stop by the road to buy Suya and just relate with people. It’s when you’re putting up a different image for people that’s when you have to maintain that image and then you will not be able to be yourself and maybe perhaps everybody is billing you thinking that you have the money.
I saw a post of yours in white garment, there’s a popular belief that celestial church members are fetish, what’s your take on that?
Everybody has their own opinion about different churches and stuff like that but yes a lot of people believe that Celestians are very fetish and that is because they do not understand the whole thing. People question why they don’t know, people question what they don’t understand and to be honest I’m really not going to blame them because we have seen and heard so it’s right for people to believe that they are fetish but trust me, ‘Ijo Mimo’ is not fetish.
How was growing up like for you?
Growing up was fun. I grew up with the whole family; my brothers, my dad may his soul rest in peace. It was fun, we were four but it felt like a large family because everybody was everybody’s favorite. My dad made everything available, my mom is still amazing. I didn’t have any reason to complain.
Are you planning on producing your own movie anytime soon?
I have a movie out already called ‘Samgba fo‘, its on YouTube, it’s a Yoruba movie and I’m in the works of writing another one. I have a thing for Yoruba movies and I’m not talking about the mediocre ones I’m talking about proper well researched movies. Fingers crossed.
