Celebrating cultural heritage while upholding sustainable practices in fashion

With the rise of glamour and style, fast fashion has flooded the market, offering an endless line-up of clothing to meet growing consumer demands. However, this trend has come at a great cost to society and the environment. A move towards sustainability in fashion has become a necessity. Perhaps, merging the words “sustainability” and “fashion” might once have seemed contradictory, but in today’s world, where the fashion industry contributes 10% of global carbon emmissions,  the urgency for change is clear.

A 2017 report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) also estimated that 35% of all microplastics — very small pieces of plastic that never biodegrade — in the ocean came from the laundering of synthetic textiles like polyester.

Sustainability has become a key focus in modern fashion, particularly as consumers are increasingly aware of and demanding ethical practices from brands. All of these greatly emphasise the urgent need for eco-friendly practices within the fashion industry and brands like Yehbo, under the leadership of Emmanuel Junior Yeboah, are responding to this call by making environmentally conscious choices.

Just like other fashion icons already walking this path. With the likes of Buki Akomolafe—a German-Nigerian designer who focuses on sustainable fashion by using eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton, ensuring that her collections have minimal environmental impact while supporting fair trade practices—to Bethany Williams, a UK-based designer who creates collections using recycled and waste materials. Williams collaborates with social projects, providing work opportunities to marginalized communities while creating innovative and sustainable garments.

As consumers become increasingly aware, sustainability has emerged as a focal point in modern fashion. People now demand ethical practices from brands that align with their values.  Emmanuel Junior Yeboah has positioned itself as a frontrunner in sustainable fashion by choosing eco-friendly materials that significantly reduce its environmental footprint. This approach not only enhances the quality of Yehbo’s outfits but also aligns with the global movement toward a more sustainable future—not just for the fashion industry, but for the world at large. By prioritizing eco-friendly production methods and ethical sourcing, Yehbo stands firmly against fast fashion, encouraging consumers to make conscious, sustainable choices.

Founded in 2016, Yehbo has emerged as a progressive clothing line, recognized for its unique ability to create artistic, earth-toned outfits that pay homage to nature. The brand draws inspiration from feminine qualities, cultural identity, and an infusion of storytelling in its craftsmanship.

Yeboah’s Ghanaian heritage is inherently reflected in his collections, serving as the foundation for his 2023 line, Dahila, which celebrates the diverse textures of the African continent. Each piece is carefully designed, capturing the essence of being stylish yet culturally aware. Yehbo’s aesthetic is particularly captivating for those who appreciate nature-inspired designs.

Beyond his success in the fashion industry, Yeboah is dedicated to empowering local artisans by incorporating various cultural patterns from different African countries, His work emphasizes inclusivity and the spirit of ‘Ubuntu’. fostering togetherness and socially friendly decisions.

The entire Dahila collection is an extraordinary fusion of cultural heritage and bold femininity. Drawing inspiration from traditional African Ankara prints, Emmanuel Yeboah, the designer, has crafted a series of outfits that embody the principles of slow fashion while celebrating the diversity and strength of women. Each piece is like a love letter to women of all shapes and sizes, blending cultural motifs with modern, cutting-edge fashion design.

At the heart of the collection is Yeboah’s deep connection to his African heritage, especially his use of Ankara fabric. Ankara has long been an emblem of cultural identity, often telling stories and conveying messages through its vibrant colours and intricate patterns. Although Ankara fabric originated from Indonesian batik, it was embraced by West African cultures in the mid-20th century, becoming a symbol of post-colonial identity and cultural resilience. TheDahilacollection weaves together these historical elements, allowing wearers to embrace their heritage while making a bold, contemporary statement.

Yehbo, as a fashion house, masterfully reinvents Ankara in a modern context, giving these traditionally rich prints new life in hues that resonate with the global woman.

A defining aspect of this collection is its commitment to sustainability. In an industry driven by fast fashion,Dahila stands out by embracing the ethics of slow fashion—prioritising the quality, longevity, and ethical production of garments. The use of locally produced Ankara supports African economies, with skilled artisans creating the fabric using eco-friendly, low-impact dyes. By sourcing materials locally, Emmanuel reduces the environmental footprint associated with long-distance shipping.

One of the central themes in Dahila is the celebration of the female body in all its forms. From crop tops to free-flowing pants, Emmanuel’s designs flatter a variety of body types, promoting inclusivity and empowering women to feel confident in their own skin. This approach reflects a broader movement within fashion to reject short-sighted beauty standards and embrace diversity.

The collection’s mix of structured tailoring and voluminous sleeves reflects the duality of femininity—soft yet strong, bold yet refined. Every detail, from the secured waistlines to the wide-leg trousers, is designed to enhance natural curves. Emmanuel’s clever use of colour, contrasting deep reds with vibrant blues and yellows, creates eye-catching patterns that are wearable.

Perhaps most impressive is the collection’s versatility. These garments transition effortlessly from casual settings to formal occasions, making them timeless staples in any wardrobe. This adaptability speaks to the slow fashion norms ensuring that these pieces will remain stylish for years to come.

Yehbo’s deep respect for African heritage, combined with its commitment to sustainability, positions this collection as both relevant and transformative. By promoting conscious consumption and ethical practices,Dahila challenges the wastefulness of fast fashion, offering a sustainable alternative that honours both heritage and the planet.

The use of breathable materials for each piece promotes comfort and style, making them perfect for women’s summer outfits. The collection is a mix of simple pieces for cool-to-hot weather, featuring two-piece, colourful, and vibrant outfits that exude energetic concepts. Emmanuel’s styles are not just for function; they are birthed from inspiration, paying attention to all details for every weather and occasion. From slim, shady looks to quick-run outfits with pockets that elevate style effortlessly. Pockets that serve as a convenience, much like men’s fashion. This relevance challenges traditional fashion norms that have prioritized aesthetics over functionality in women’s clothing.

Accessorising is a major determinant in fashion, influencing how an outfit is perceived. The wrong accessory choice can render an outfit less alluring. This is why Emmanuel meticulously styles each piece with a deep understanding of current fashion trends. His choice to pair simple jewellery with some outfits while opting for attractive earrings and statement pieces for others demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship. Emmanuel is not just a designer but a stylist who knows how to match accessories to each piece’s needs and style requirements.

While much has been said about the outfits, the hair also complements each look. The right hairstyle can either make or break an outfit and convey a specific message. For instance, a low bun or sleek updo can convey professionalism and formality, making it suitable for business settings or formal events. In contrast, a messy bun or loose waves might suggest a more laid-back style.

For this collection, Emmanuel opted for neatly packed low buns, allowing the outfits to shine while ensuring that the wearer can go about their day without worrying about their hair. Practical hairstyles like these focus attention on the outfit and accessories, providing a cleaner look.

The right amount of makeup can elevate an outfit while overdoing it can be a disadvantage. Emmanuel’s use of bold colours, such as ombre lipstick, complements the outfits perfectly, enhancing facial features and adding depth with dramatic lashes. Well-applied makeup boosts confidence and completes the overall look, making individuals feel more polished and put-together.

In addition to highlighting the face, incorporating the right shoes is crucial, though it is often overlooked. Shoes can make a powerful fashion statement. Whether sleek heels, trendy sneakers, or elegant flats, the right pair of shoes can define an outfit’s style. Emmanuel ensured that simple open-toe heels were the perfect choice for the collection, offering both ease of wear and comfort.

With simple, easy-to-wear tops cut at the midriff, they are perfect for beachwear when paired with shorts and as also suitable for date nights with longer trousers. Talk about thoughtful designs that consider the activities of everyday women in their styling—that’s the hallmark of the Yehbo brand.

Thiscollection isn’t just about clothing—it’s a celebration of femininity, culture, and sustainability. Emmanuel Yeboah is not only reviving traditional aesthetics but also pushing them forward, contributing to the growing global recognition of African fashion. His goal is to bring African designs to the forefront of the global fashion scene, joining the growing movement that celebrates African talent and heritage on the world stage.

African fashion is experiencing rapid growth due to an increasing demand for culturally rich, ethically produced garments. Dahila as a brand, is perfectly aligned with this trend, offering a bold statement on the future of fashion while celebrating its roots. For the modern woman who seeks to make a statement while honouring heritage and sustainability, this collection offers the perfect fusion of style and substance.

  • A Review On Mater Dei 2023 Collection— A Recipe For Bold Women

A Review On Mater Dei 2023 Collection— A Recipe For Bold Women

One thing every woman should be is bold!

However, because of temperaments and internal/external factors, some women find it hard to be brave enough to do what has to be done and say what has to be said.

But for a moment, a world where you don’t have to go out of your comfort zone just to be bold, a world where instead of speaking, your attire speaks for you!

When it comes to creating this effect through outfit designs, Mater Dei is the brand that got you!

    Who are they?

Mater Dei is a brand dedicated to redefining luxury as inclusive and accessible by ensuring meticulous attention to embroidery and embellishment is highlighted in every piece. By championing inclusivity and empowerment, they strive to create a world where high fashion is not only a symbol of elegance but also of universal accessibility and acceptance.

The brand expertly merges African heritage with contemporary design, honouring both individual uniqueness and the collective spirit of femininity. Their mission is to make luxury an experience all women can enjoy, offering a diverse range of sizes to accommodate varied needs and preferences. However, Mami Dei offers more than just luxury dresses but an opportunity to stand out in the crowd.

This brand was established by designer Mariam Ipogha. The brilliant lady’s passion for fashion stems from a deep-rooted appreciation of Nigerian culture, which she combines with a global perspective gained from years of exploring fashion capitals around the world. Her intriguing designs are not just limited to garments; they are expressions of art and identity, drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of African textiles and the sleek aesthetics of contemporary couture. She believes that luxury should celebrate all forms of beauty and be accessible to every woman, regardless of size or background and coined out her collections to reflect this belief by offering pieces that are tailored to enhance the natural beauty and confidence of each wearer.

Staying true to the vision of the brand— forging a path toward a future where every woman feels celebrated and empowered through the transformative power of fashion, Mariam Ipogha has created several outstanding attires including her 2023 Bold collection.

The collection depicts the whole notion of ‘boldness’ and creates an avenue for women who desire to take a bolder approach.

The collection is comprised of three outfits.

The first dress has interesting patterns and several highlights.

     About the dress.

The bold collection’s beginning piece is a sassy but simple gown created with three standard fabrics—Ankara, Crepe and Cotton. All of this material has similar traits of durability, comfort and breathability. However, they all have their unique attributes.

Ankara is known for its versatility and affordability. While on the other hand, the crepe fabric is hailed for its drapey attribute which is its ability to align and fall easily when worn. Lastly, cotton materials embody the characteristics of being hypoallergenic, soft and absorbent. Its hypoallergenic feature makes it suitable for sensitive skin types, it also has a soft feel to it and can absorb moisture thereby keeping you dry.

The first dress made with this quality fabric is a midi ruffled collared zigzag gown. It is a knee-length attire starting with a collared t-shirt intro, the collared t-shirt starts right above the bust-line moving up to the neckline and down to the sleeves.

The neckline of the dress is a v-neckline while the sleeves are long with a presence of buttons at the wrist to maintain a level of firmness in the dress, this part of the gown is primarily made out of Cotton fabric.

Going down to the bustline is a mixture of both the orange crepe and Ankara fabric. this part of the dress holds the main highlight of the attire which is the zigzag curves running through the middle of the burst line down to mid-thigh. This pattern was achieved with careful placement of the Ankara fabric on the crepe. Other patterns that can be found in this area are the dart lines by the burst and the front sides of the gown.

The concluding part of this dress is a 5/6-inch ruffle made with only the Ankara fabric.

The dress is a very creative piece that deserves recognition but a few adjustments can make it into the perfect piece. Rather than sewing the zigzag pattern on the crepe, the two fabrics can be placed together by sewing at the back face of the material. This will help that section of the dress sit better and give the fabrics a perfect blend.

    Swag it out.

There are various ways you could style this fit. You could either go for the look in the image. However, if that is not your fort, here are some optional accessories that could be combined while pulling off your unique swag— leather belts, chain belts, wristwatches, knuckle rings, a pendant, bracelets, dangling earrings, wigs, braids, contact lenses, and footwear e.g. wedge heels, stilettos, block heels, plumps, ballet flats, flat mules, sandals among several others.

Being sassy is one thing but looking sassy in such a sophisticated way? Now, that is something!

Starting with the catchy fabrics used to the aura of the dress, you in the outfit create the ‘look fly’ impression.

This second piece is a two-piece attire comprising a backless puffed blouse and a ruffle trouser. This creation was crafted out of a combination of crepe and Kampala fabric (a type of Ankara fabric) which have several benefits as earlier listed in the first dress.

Both fabrics were equally used in the crafting of the top part of the outfit. The patterns on the second dress include a round neckline, puffed sleeves and a backless feature with wide band ropes. The round neck is the round curve formed at the neckline, and the puffed sleeve is a unique type known as the Juliet sleeve, this shape was achieved with a delicately gathered stitch, while the backless feature shows off the back and this is one of the most alluring features of this fit. The wide and thick band ropes created with the Kampala material help the cloth sit solidly after it’s worn. This was created to substitute the absence of a zipper.

The lower or bottom of the outfit is a ruffle trouser. The ruffle trouser is a simple pant which showcases traits of a band, seam pockets, a side zipper and side ruffles. The loose pants can also be called a palazzo. It starts with a band located at the mid waistline, moving to the seam pockets located at the two front sides of the trouser, then to the teeth zippers at the right side of the pants which allows for ease and lastly, the key characteristics of the pants which is the ruffle design. This part of the trousers was achieved with white crepe material and placed on the pants with weeping stitches.

This outfit is simply fabulous but as a suggestion, the designer could consider creating the option of a zipped back for those who do not like showing skin.

    Boogie it down

Seeing as the outfit can be worn separately, there is a long list of ways of styling the outfit, one of which can be seen in the images. Other ways could be switching either the top or the bottom and combining it with complimenting wear like a flared skirt, shorts, crop tops, blouse, etc. For example, the pants could be paired with a white poplin shirt and the blouse can go with a pair of cargo jeans.

As for accessories, options like pendants, wristwatches, knuckle rings, bracelets, dangling earrings, wigs, braids, contact lenses, and footwear e.g. platforms, kitten heels, block heels wedge heels, plumps, stilettos, block heels, ballet flats, flat mules, sandals among several others would create a beautiful appearance.

The last of the collection is a simple but classy ruched gown made with an orange-coloured Ankara and a touch of crepe fabric.

This mini piece is a straight gown consisting of a collar, puffed sleeve and a ruched effect. The dress started with a v-neckline crafted into a flap collar which was designed with the crepe material, moving to the sleeve which is an exaggerated puffed sleeve held to the body with an elastic finish.

The bottom part of the outfit holds the ruched effect which h is the general concept of the dress. This part is carefully made using complex stitches to gather the fabric together so that there are little folds as it moves downward, and a zipper is placed at the back of the dress for better fitting.

    Be classy

There are a number of ways you could style this outfit. Styling as seen in the image is a smart move. However, if that is not to your taste, here are some optional accessories that could be combined while pulling off your look— leather belts, chain belts, wristwatches, knuckle rings, a pendant, bracelets, dangling earrings, wigs, braids, contact lenses, and footwear e.g. kitten heels, wedge heels, stilettos, block heels, plumps, ballet flats, flat mules, sandals among several others.

A standing ovation goes out to Mariam Ipogha for putting together this fantastic piece. Mouth-dropping designs like this are bound to impact the fashion industry.

Kudos on a work well done!

  • ‘How I juggle fashion and politics’

‘How I juggle fashion and politics’

Catching them young! This has been a strategy that has worked over the years for young girls and boys. Gbemisola Mercy Oguntimehin member Kwara State House of Assembly Service Commission is a beneficiary and in this encounter with Yetunde Oladeinde, she takes you into her political journey, inspiration, and expectations.

HAS mentoring helped you in any way?

Yes, I have had a lot of mentors at home, on the job, and also in the Church. I attend Genesis global church and I learnt a lot from my spiritual leader. He supports and encourages the youths in the church in different ways. I am passionate about mentoring and empowering young women to thrive in business and politics.

I took a break and had to come back again. It has been a wonderful experience so far.

After 2019 I came back before they called me that I was appointed to the House of Assembly Service Commission in Kwara State.

How did you get into politics?

I started in Ebute Meta. At that point, I got motivated and support from my Landlord who was a ward chairman. Anytime he was going to his political meeting, he would invite me to go with him. So, I started attending the meetings regularly.

How old were you at that time?

I was quite young, just 20 years old. At that point I didn’t have any political ambition; I was just following them without any personal plans at all. But gradually, I started picking interest and I had to follow those who had experience and I learned a lot in the process.

I was actually more interested in my passion as a designer which is something that I am very skilled at.

Going down memory lane, what are some of the important things that you did?

The first opportunity then came my way and I came out to contest for Councilor in my ward, Ward B in Ebute Meta at Apapa Road.

    What is the experience like?

It was good. I learned a lot. Unfortunately, there was someone who was going back for the second term in office and I was asked to step down for him. So, I did that. After that experience, I got married in 2009 and I had to stop active political participation briefly to cope with early married life. My husband is from Delta State; he is a doctor and works with the Federal Medical Center.  He has been a very supportive and caring man. He is a good man.  I told him that I liked politics and would like to continue from where I stopped. So, he accepted because he knew that I loved politics. Also, my boss who brought me here had already relocated to Kwara state and that was how I also relocated.

    What are the challenges?

It is a big opportunity because it was not what I fought for but it came through the grace of God. Also, our Governor is a good Governor, the governor of everybody. He is really trying for the youths and women. It has not happened in the history of Kwara State to have about 50 percent representation of women and youths in Government.

What has the experience been like?

They treat women very well in the house. Our Governor has been very encouraging. That is why he brought us into his government and everything has been smooth.

Tell us about your aspirations. Where do you see yourself going from here?

My dream is big. After this, I would like to contest for the House of Assembly for a start, if God makes it possible. After that I would like to go to the House of Reps and then the Senate.

Let’s talk about some of the female politicians that you admire.

The first woman that I admire in politics is Senator Gbemisola Saraki. She is a nice woman and when you meet her one on one, you discover that she is a very pleasant and easy-going person. She is always ready to listen to you and I admire her so much. I also admire Senator Oluremi Tinubu. She is our mother now, the first lady of Nigeria.

You are also a fashion designer. Do you combine this with politics?

Yes. My designing skills started from a very young age. That was even before I got into politics. I learned fashion while I was in Kaduna state before I relocated to Lagos. The name of my brand is Genesis Fashion and I started worshipping at Genesis church in the year 2000 the church has been a real blessing for my life. I am a product of the church and I got the name from the church.  I have never regretted my participation and the progress made from the day I started.

    What inspired your designs?

From that experience, I wanted to do something that was unique, creative, pocket-friendly, and affordable. But, before then, the kind of clothing I was doing was a niche thing.  We do a variety that includes African-inspired clothing.  But in this instance, it’s everybody’s thing and we have carved a niche for ourselves. In addition, I also do a variety of other things that are of everyday use.

Do you have any advice for women?

I strongly believe that anything you want to do in this life, please go for it, be pushful, and do not relent no matter the obstacles or challenges. It is also important to be focused and put her heart into what you are doing. One day, you will surely get there. Most women have a lot of things on their minds these days. My advice is that they should be focused, identify what they want to do pursue it, and be successful.

So, what has been your greatest motivation throughout your journey?

Over the years a number of people have touched my life in one way or the other. So, for me I like touching lives, helping to lift or support other women. Then for my brand, I always work to be the best and satisfy my customers creating beautiful and unique pieces.

Do you think Nigerian women are given enough opportunities to grow?

I strongly believe that gender bias continues to create huge barriers for many women in Nigeria. For many, it’s been a journey but there are also a number of men that are very supportive and it is therefore important to carry the men along. That way they will support and understand the issues affecting women.
