‘Our first fire accident was the turning point for me’

Ezekiel Adamu is an entrepreneur, CEO of Balmoral Event Centers, and son of Amos Adamu, foremost Nigerian sports’ administrator. In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, he talks about his entrepreneurial journey, commitment to innovation, and spearheading groundbreaking initiatives.

What inspired the idea of running an event center?

I started my journey with an Event company in France called GL Events. GL has a Network of venues.  Apart from having a Network of venues, they also create their own events from Conferences to different things.  They are actually the biggest in the world and they are listed on the stock exchange.  They have over 300 events every year on their own. They don’t have to wait for people to come and use their venue. So, working with them was inspiring. Then, I started with my first venue which was Balmoral on Kudirat Abiola Way. From there, we moved on to a different Network of venues.

Tell us about the first venue and how it all started.

We started that venue in 2006. Then it was mainly people going to parks or schools for their events. It took us one year to get our first customer.  You can imagine the experience of running the place for a year without customers. People thought it was too expensive and back then it was 420,000 naira. They felt why I should pay that much when I can just go to a school, rent canopies, and all that. People even parked on the streets and did their parents on the streets then. Fashola was the governor then and he stopped parties on the streets. That was how people started going to event venues and some people advised me to drop my price. But, I was consistent and didn’t drop my price. When you have something good, you must value it. If you don’t value it, other people won’t value it for you.

What has been your experience in business?

My experience has been a worthwhile journey. I understand something with events and generally, I discovered that problems are there for you to look for solutions.  And when you find those solutions, then you become a champion.  So, I am constantly looking for where problems are, so that I can come up with solutions and monetize that.

There is a book on your table titled Mindset, what message did you get from it?

There are different mindsets.  There is the mindset of a winner and the Mindset of those who aren’t. Someone can say I don’t want to go into this because there is traffic or problems here. That is when you have a regular mindset.

But a growth mindset would say that there are problems here but I would go there. I will use the example of salespeople who have a target to buttress my point. So you have a target and on a day you wake up in the morning and everywhere is cloudy and rain wants to fall. The regular person would say rain is falling today, don’t let me go out. But someone with a growth mindset would say let me go out today because every other person would give an excuse.  I also learned from a book about 2 salespeople sent to a town to do research on how to sell shoes. The first person went and said this is a dead end because they don’t even know anything about shoes. The second person went there and said this is a goldmine.  They don’t know anything about shoes which means I would sell a lot of shoes. It just means that your mindset is what takes you to where you want to where you want to get to.

How are you thriving in the business with the changing economy?

These are excuses, everybody has excuses about fuel increase and other things that are changing. But, you also have people that are thriving in Business. To me, I look at things differently, especially how I can give value during this period. So, if you give value it means that you are also preferred.  Every other person would say fuel is going up; this is going up, how we increase our prices. For me, on the other hand, I am thinking about how I reduce prices. So, for me, it is just the mindset and there is always a solution to everything in this world.

What prepared you for this journey?

My books. I read for the best. Also, my dad. Sometimes, he would call me and say why don’t do this or that. Most times, I go to the books in the area. So, I read a lot and learn and unlearn. When people also cite examples and say things like Donald Trump is a bad person but I tell them his story. He has gone through different challenges in life and he put it in a book. When you see it, you will understand. Even if he says he wants to be President again, he will still win. He understands what other people don’t get.

Now, that you mentioned your dad, he was popular in sports, why didn’t you go into that sector?

Events are sports. There is an event that we do that is called Copper Lagos, a football event. For every world cup event, we work on the viewing center.

What are the other things that you share in common with your dad?

Work ethics. He is a hard-working man. I don’t understand how somebody would commit to you to deliver something and you give an excuse not to deliver it, no matter what. For example, if I agree with you that we are going to do this at a certain cost, even if circumstances and everything changes, I will still do what we agreed. Later on, I may tell you that this is what happened. If you deal with people with integrity, they will listen to you. Every other person would say, he gave me this thing, by the time I charged him, it was N20, 000 but now it is N30,000. But, these same people would never come to you. If the charged N20, 000 and that thing becomes N10. So, for me, I think those ethics keep you in business for a while. It’s the currency that you keep, so if you have been in business for the past 15 years, then it means that we have been doing something right. But, if you are cutting corners, you can’t go far. I remember that there are so many people that I started this business with that are not here today.

Still on your dad, he’s Amos and you are Ezekiel, tell us about the religious factor. We believe in God. We believe that faith is very important. I was saying earlier on that when you have an imagination or idea in your head, it’s just an idea. It’s faith that makes you take the first step.  Faith also makes you take the second step and before you know it, it keeps moving.

How can we improve the tourism and hospitality industry in Nigeria?

I don’t even think that we have started yet. For me, I got into the business mainly because I felt like the tourism part of the business is great. I am still at it because I feel that we are not there yet. Lagos should be a place where you can spend dollars on the street to buy things like boli. When you go to the Dominican Republic, they don’t even have the infrastructure but because they have positioned themselves as a tourist place, they have positioned themselves and accept those currencies. So, I feel like we are not there yet.  Definitely, tourism is a major part of entertainment. What is World Cup, it is tourism. That is why they give four years and within those four years, you build capacity. People come in and everybody becomes enriched. The best way to bring tourism in is through event because it is experiential. That is where we come in. We did Wonderland last December and we just keep creating events ourselves.

    Tell us about LIFE.

Lagos  Independence Festival of Excellence (LIFE). We came together last year, Balmoral and TEMPO group. They have a studio and we have venues. Idris Olorunnibe and I are friends and we came together to come up with the event. On October first, after the speech, everybody is always looking for where to go to. We decided to come up with an event for Lagos the center of excellence. We came up with an idea but on October first, when it was supposed to happen, we discovered that last year was a political season. There was going to be a million man march by Peter Obi and I remember that there was a lot of warning then, warning people to stay at home. We had done a lot of work but then safety was very important and to hold on because LIFE was supposed to be a family event. So, we pushed it to 2023.

Talking about safety, you once had a fire accident at Balmoral, what are you doing about this?

Yes, we had a fire accident about 10 years ago. For me, that fire incident was a turning point. It happened and showed everyone that this is a company that has come to stay.  We had only one venue and with that fire incident, you could have gone down completely. But we rebuilt back immediately. That gave investors and people confidence that we are here to stay. From there we got the opportunity to start another event center, the Haven in GRA, then went on to Eko Hotel where we set up a venue inside Eko ocean view, and then we started the venue inside Federal palace hotel. Now, we are building one inside the Sheraton hotel, Ikeja.

How has your family background influenced your growth?

I won’t hide the fact that I grew up in a privileged home. But growing up as well my dad was a very hard worker. So, I learned the discipline of working hard. I also know that overnight success takes 20 years. Nowadays, on social media, they behave like you can start a business and be successful right away. We are not even there yet. For me, on a scale of 1 to 10, we are on 5, and still, a long way to go, the business world keeps evolving. What you did two years ago is not what you can do this year. For us as leaders, we need to keep innovating and people tell me that I get bored easily. I don’t get bored easily, I tend to travel a lot and when I travel a lot, I see things that people are doing. I would come in and break it down, even if we just did it last year. That is how we have been able to stay relevant all these years. For me, innovation and keep innovating is the way to go. Now, we are delving into the tech part of things, now we are moving into an experienced tech and you find out that everywhere in the world it is tech that we are using to enable what we are doing. We are championing how to use tech to enhance events.

What advice do you have for young people who want to Japa?

Last year, I was a victim. Five of my management staff left at the same time. However, maybe because I have lived abroad, I know that it is not easy on the other side.

  • Nigeria’s fashion on verge of explosion

Nigeria’s fashion on verge of explosion

It was a gathering of who is who, especially, emerging designers in the Nigerian fashion circle. The venue was the 5th Edition of the Fashion Finest Epic Show at the Balmoral Convention Center, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Business of Fashion conference-themed: ‘Fashion for the Future,’ looked at the opportunities, sustainable fashion space, global trends, branding, and more.

Mr. Sola Oyebade, the founder of Fashion’s Finest Africa, gave an overview of the opportunities, challenges, and things to expect in the near future.

“This year’s conference is about sustainability. One of the things that we are keen on Fashion Finest is promoting new and emerging designers. People that do not have the experience are given the opportunity to perform in big shows and compete with some of the top designers out there.”

One of the participants from the previous conference highlighted lessons learned and motivation to set up her own business shortly afterward.  “It’s interesting hearing from Jane that after listening to our conference last year, she decided to go and set up her business. That is what we are about, coming to us, meeting new people, meeting experienced people, learning from them, and being able to be given that inspiration drive, and that courage to go forward and set up your own business.”

Oyebade continued: “The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Fashion for the Future.’ Fashion is always changing. A lot of you are wearing something now and you think that you are the first person to dress like that.

“Fashion has always been recycled. You are wearing nothing now that somebody did not wear some years back. So, we are looking at what fashion will be like in the future.

“CNN said about two or three years ago that fashion would be the biggest income earner in Nigeria. It will earn more money than oil, agriculture, and any other form of entertainment combined. That is how big fashion is going to be.”

He went on to do a rough estimate of the number of outfits the average Nigerian woman is likely to wear in a week, month, and year to buttress his point.  “On average if there are 365 days, let’s take away the weekends, then it means that you wear 200 outfits in a year. By the time you combine pants with a different shirt, roll up one dress, and put a skirt underneath that is a different outfit. Let’s say that we have a population of about 150 million that can wear clothes and if the average is 2000 naira per outfit (ladies), then you multiply this by times 200 and then 150 million people. That is how much money that can be made in this industry.”

He disclosed that the team is putting a lot of effort into helping people strategise for the future. “We have our design for a fashion competition to bring people that are recycling and there is a cash price for them. We also planned sustainability fashion training as well what we called SIFT, where we would be doing lots of practical sessions, teaching you about the business side and it is going to be affordable. It’s for free and emerging designers.”

On his part, Dr. Seyi Adebayo-Olubi, CEO of 1024 Concept, Fashion One Africa, and Co–founder of Expedition 54, took participants through Global trends. “We live in a global village. Things happen in different parts of the world and it has an impact on us. It is not different in the fashion space. I have been in this space for a while and I can see certain key trends that are not flash in the pan. They are going to continue for the next few years.”

He added: “As emerging designers, if you have not caught these trends you should take note of some things, and begin to look at them. Fashion is on the verge of explosion. The first is sustainable and ethical fashion. This is because everybody is concerned about the planet, and the environment. So, more and more people who are buying fashion items are asking themselves if the people producing these items are doing it in a sustainable manner. Are they doing it in an ethical manner? This goes right across to where they are sourcing their materials from, which materials they are using, and going right across to even where the things are being produced. It is something that is going to continue to grow because the consciousness is there.

“A survey was done among GenZ’s and Millennials in the US and a whopping 42 percent of them said they were very concerned about the clothes they wear, and where they are made.”

He posited that anybody that is in the business of fashion should be thinking about how they can tackle the issue of sustainability and ethics in business, “especially if you are thinking of becoming global at some point.”

The second thing, according to the CEO of 1024 Concept boss is that fashion is not immune to technology, adding that the digital transformation is taking place at a very fast pace and it is affecting the sector. “A lot of things are coming to play now that were unthinkable, five or ten years ago. We have direct-to-client brands and the reason why they have been able to do this is technology. A lot of people do a lot of social commerce, sell on Instagram, and do not need a fashion show or a shop.

“All you are doing is just posting your photos, building trust and people buy from you. You are faithful to your pictures and what you have presented and that business continues to grow. But it is not going to go anywhere; technology will continue to add more and more. You can also think about the things that AI is doing right now. Before, if you wanted to curate a look for your brand,

you would buy the clothes, get a stylist, get a good photographer and an extremely good phone, find the right place to take the picture, and post it on Social media. But with AI, something done by a guy called Malik, he put it out with old people on the runway and people kept wondering where they were coming from. It was all done by an AI tool called mid-journey. He

created those pictures, gave the right prompts, and didn’t need a model, didn’t need clothes, or anything. It was all done by AI and so technology is going to continue to impact the fashion industry in ways that would continue to amaze us. The other two trends are inclusivity and diversity.”

He explained that five years ago, a fashion show would consist of a particular kind of look, a particular kind of model. These days, diversity and inclusivity are becoming more and more the conversation and it is not going to go anywhere. “Whatever, you are seeing on the fashion runway would eventually impact the fashion stores and the clothes you make. The fourth trend has to do with individuality and personalization. People love to express themselves and it

is all about combining looks, combining outfits, and items to create your own personal style and personal look. That is going to continue. Any fashion brand that can cater to people’s desire for that individual expression is going to succeed. This is because people want to express

themselves. One area you see this is with Tee shirts, not just about the shirts but the different designs that you see on the shirts. It is going to extend to every other thing that we are wearing.”

Olubi also took the conversation from global trends to the local scene and the things to take note of to succeed. “In 2023, the total value of the fashion market is 1.7 trillion US dollars, which is huge. The sad news is that all of Africa, not Nigeria the total is 30 billion dollars. It is still big but comparatively, we are still a very small part of the global market. But, it also tells us comparatively that there is an opportunity for growth. If you pay attention to what is going on, you would realize that where the creative industry is concerned, fashion, music, movies, Africa particularly Nigeria is taking the lead. The growth that you are seeing in music and movies, fashion is going to overtake it. That is the future.”

For Toyin Lawani, designer and CEO of Tiannah’s Place it is important to create a mark for yourself. “Create something so mind-blowing, so beautiful that when you step into a room everyone wants to know who you are. They just want to get closer to you, to tap from your talent and that is what I see as success.”.

She explained that: “Most people get so comfortable where they are and they forget who they are and Nigeria can do that to you. You can travel out there; collaborate with people even when you are not getting paid. I know how I strive to make a difference. I used to direct a lot of music videos and I have worked with so many big names in the industry”.

Lawani goes on to talk about the things that give her an edge and the things she does to get attention. “I do a lot of body arts, a lot of things that Nigerians won’t do normally. People see me and say, see what you are doing and you are supposed to be a mother. And I am winning best picture in a Europe award that gave me a cash prize or the photographer was ecstatic, can’t believe that we won.

Looking at the opportunities available in the global market, Mubarak Olalekan Bakare, the tallest model in Sub-Saharan Africa talked about the importance of proper positioning. “ For me, bridging the gap between brands and models is very important. The idea is to position brand products to the populace. I take it a step further by leveraging my unique position. I also promote African culture and tourism. It is a fusion, creating opportunities and I decided to fuse things. Now, more than ever, Africa needs to be spotlighted “.

Like Mubarak, Akin Faminu, a medical doctor cum content creator agrees that this is the time to create good content and showcase the vast opportunities in the sector of the world. “What I do majorly is content creation and it serves so many purposes. The first and major purpose is to bridge the gap between the designers, all the way from manufacturing, producing, and eventual financial results in the sector. So, to bridge the gap between designers and consumers, to help designers communicate their work in a certain way.”

Faminu adds that: “Also content creation helps you tell a story. It’s communication and storytelling. It can help you position a brand in a certain way. It can help you position a brand or the entire industry. Like the Nigerian fashion industry, for example, you can communicate the industry’s nitty-gritty to an audience that can be local or international”.

On her part, Teni Olowu, a fashion stylist and creative director of Style Territory, it is important to understand who you are and the value that you want to give. “A lot of people do not understand the why and whatever actions behind what they want to do. Everyone wants to make more money and you realize that there is a side hustle. You have to understand that without purpose, abuse is evitable. And without purpose, there is no drive, no determination in the face of opposition.”

  • Spring Stitches: A Review On The Beauty Of Modern Ankara Designs

Spring Stitches: A Review On The Beauty Of Modern Ankara Designs

Imagine a world without fashion, a world where style has no room to exist. Picture a life where humans don’t focus on how to create beautiful designs with fabrics. Without a doubt, that world will be bland.

This is why in 2016, Augustina Temitope Abisuga set out on a mission to create more than just a clothing brand, and she wanted to build a space where fashion was about self-expression. With Spring Stitches, she’s done exactly that, weaving together vibrant colours, timeless traditions, and modern designs into one seamless narrative.

The brand isn’t just about clothes, it’s about empowering women to feel confident, beautiful, and connected to something bigger than them. Every stitch reflects Augustina’s passion for sustainability and her deep appreciation for the rich heritage of indigenous fabrics.

What makes Spring Stitches truly special is its ability to celebrate the old and the new in perfect harmony. Drawing on traditional patterns and materials, Augustina has transformed them into fresh, contemporary designs that speak to the modern woman.

Think of bold Ankara prints woven into chic, tailored blazers, or handcrafted fabrics used to create dresses that make you feel like you are wearing a piece of history, but with a modern twist. It’s this perfect blend of tradition and innovation that has made Spring Stitches stand out in the fashion world, resonating with women from all walks of life.

Let’s quickly dive into some of her beautiful dresses, starting from the two designs above from her awesome Arise 2023 collection.

The Adetola Dress from Spring Stitches’ 2023 Arise Collection is a stunning reimagining of the traditional West African boubou. A celebration of culture and modern design, this dress offers a beautiful blend of the old vibes mixing with the new.

Crafted from yellow Ankara fabric with vibrant blue accents and different spherical shapes, it makes a statement with its rich colour and eye-catching pattern. The transformative feature on the lower bodice allows the dress to switch from a flowing, full-length gown to a knee-length.

This design gives the wearer two looks in one, making it perfect for any occasion. The dress is as stylish as it is practical, with a V-neck, wide sleeves that reach the ankle, and side pockets that add a relaxed, effortless feel making the wearer feel comfortable. If you are looking for a dress that combines tradition with modern innovation, this piece is an absolute must-have.

Augustina’s designs allow women to wear their heritage with pride, creating clothing that’s not only stunning but meaningful. Each piece is crafted with care, sustainability in mind, and a commitment to promoting stories of cultural identity and self-expression.

The Chisom Dress is another standout piece from the Spring Stitches 2023 Arise Collection. The dress is a perfect blend of simplicity and statement-making design. Featuring a striking upper bodice with lace details, this dress expresses beauty.

The black Ankara fabric is adorned with flower-like designs in rich red and ash tones, giving the dress both depth and character. The dress is designed to hug the body, elegantly holding the wearer’s shape perfectly with a graceful, long silhouette that falls beautifully to the heel.

The long sleeves are crafted from a sheer black net material, offering a delicate contrast to the Ankara fabric, while the gathers on the shoulder add an eye-catching touch, giving the dress structure. The round neck and flowing design make this a good choice for a formal event or an evening out.

The only recommendation would be to pair it with accessories, such as bold earrings or a sleek clutch, to add a final touch of glamour. Augustina, the visionary behind Spring Stitches, has once again demonstrated her ability to create pieces that shows beauty and class.

    Halima’s Composure

The beauty of Ankara lies not just in its eye-catching prints, but in the way it carries a deep connection to the people and cultures that have long used it. What makes Ankara even more special is how it can be used differently. Traditionally worn for special occasions, it is now being fixed into everyday wear, with designers transforming it into everything from casual dresses to modern ones.

Today, Ankara fabric is no longer confined to its traditional roots because designers have taken this textile and transformed it for modern fashion. They have created a new wave of fashion that mixes African tradition with global trends.

The Halima Dress is a perfect example of how simplicity can be made beautiful. It is crafted from a blend of Ankara and crepe fabric, this purple dress fits the body perfectly, hugging the curves and showing the wearer’s shape in the best way it could be.

The tiny spherical greendesigns scattered across the Ankara fabric add a simple but eye-catching detail, making the dress feel fresh and contemporary. Its fitted long sleeves make it an ideal choice for a professional setting.

What makes the Halima Dress stand out are the impactful design features. The shoulder detailing adds structure, while the ruffles on the lower bodice introduce a subtle touch of elegance.

These subtle touches allow for easy styling, making the dress suitable for both a polished office look and a dinner outfit. The three-stepgathers below the knee bring a unique flair, adding a stylish twist to the gown’s overall design.

The attached material at the edge of the sleeves, which covers the fingers, enhances the dress’s refined feel.

Designed by Augustina of Spring Stitches, the Halima Dress showcases her signature style, a perfect show of tradition and modernity. Augustina has once again delivered a piece that offers something elevating.

Whether for work or an evening out, this dress is versatile enough to stand out.

From sleek, tailored trousers and blazers to flowing maxi dresses and stylish jumpsuits, Ankara fabric is being used to craft pieces that are trendy. What’s exciting is how it has crossed cultural boundaries, no longer just for African women; it has become a global symbol of style, embraced by fashion individuals everywhere.

Through Spring Stitches, Augustina has explained what it means to truly wear Ankara. She also expertly mixes this traditional fabric with contemporary styles, creating pieces that appeal to the modern woman who values both style and sustainability.

The Niniola Masterpiece Set is the epitome of beauty and style, which perfectly blends Ankara, crepe, and premium lace fabric. This set is designed for the modern woman who desires beauty, with each piece crafted to make a bold, statement.

The black and white Ankara fabric, adorned with different circle and star-like patterns, immediately catches the eye, with a geometric appeal.

The top of the Niniola set is a true work of art with a full-cup corset that holds at the waist, it gives the wearer a flattering, and structured look.  The side peplum design adds a touch of flair, while the long sleeves made of black lace bring a sense of refinement and grace.

The gathers on the shoulders provide an extra dimension, creating balance and movement that enhances the overall elegance of the outfit. Paired with the long skirt, which has a dramatic split at the back for easy moving adds a daring look to the outfit.

The skirt flows down to the feet giving the wearer a casual but expensive look. To complete the ensemble, the matching head tie in the same fabric adds a finishing touch of royalty and completes the look.

  • I’m poised to redefine African fashion industry with my brand – Quwiyat Lawal

I’m poised to redefine African fashion industry with my brand – Quwiyat Lawal

A Nigerian creative design house, Sisi Sewing, founded by seamstress, Quwiyat Lawal has made bold statements with her incredible designs that has wowed the fashion industry.

These designs mostly, showcase well tailored clothings done with mostly African fabrics for all purpose wears.

Lawal noted that, in the fashion world today, indigenous African creative designs with fabrics has continued to make tremendous impacts, redefining how the fashion trend tilts, both local and international.

Speaking with the soft spoken founder and chief executive officer of Sisi Sewing, Quwiyat Olashile Lawal, a seamstress that has developed passion for making costumes that define purpose, she expressed confidence in explaining how African designs has continued to rule the global fashion industry.

She said, “My name is Quwiyat Olashile Lawal. I run Sisi Sewing, a fashion brand that I started since 2022. To be candid, Sisi Sewing was founded in 2022, while I was still working with Hajjewels House of Styles as a fashion designer. From 2018 to 2021, I trained at Hajjewels Fashion School, which gave me the skills and confidence I needed. After completing my training, I joined the Hajjewels team and worked there until 2023.

“During that time, I launched Sisi Sewing and started growing it alongside my work. Balancing both roles was challenging, but it gave me valuable industry experience and helped me shape my own style. Since then, the journey has been exciting.

“I started small, focusing on ready-to-wear outfits for clients, and step by step, the brand is growing gradually. Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about design, customer needs, and how to balance creativity with business,” stated Lawal.

Talking about featuring in any global fashion stage, Lawal mentioned that she has not taking part in any official exhibition in the course of her making designs, but has been preparing to make appearances in some world class fashion fairs where her design would be boldly showcased.

“I have not yet taken part in any official exhibitions. However, I am working towards showcasing my collections at Nigeria Fashion Week, GTCO Fashion Weekend, and Africa Fashion Week Nigeria. These are the platforms I’m preparing for as the next stage of my journey.

“In addition, my most outstanding experience so far has been, building collections for my clients and seeing how people connect with my designs. Each piece I create tells a story, and the feedback from clients motivates me to keep pushing forward,” Lawal added.

Beyond that milestone, Lawal has consistently been creating unique brands with African fabrics defined with indigenous styles on demand, and as well pushing the global fashion frontiers with original African styles.

Talking about her brands in demand, she said, “Under my brand Sisi Sewing, the most in-demand pieces are my ready-to-wear Afro-fusion collections. Clients especially love the Ankara-inspired designs with modern cuts, because they’re stylish and easy to wear for different occasions. And I have also thought of global reach with my brand.

“My plan is to grow Sisi Sewing beyond Nigeria. I want to introduce my designs to international audiences, starting with the UK. Right now, my clients are mostly young professionals and families in Nigeria, but I’m working towards reaching people abroad who are interested in Afro-fusion fashion,’ Lawal mentioned.

“However, Sisi Sewing as a brand is slowly creeping into the fashion consciousness of corporate, private and Aso-ebi fashion lovers and party enthusiasts in Nigeria.

“I want Sisi Sewing to grow into a brand that is recognised both in Nigeria and internationally. In the next few years, I plan to showcase at Nigeria Fashion Week, GTCO Fashion Weekend, and Africa Fashion Week Nigeria. I also want to open a studio in Nigeria that doubles as a training hub, and later start my own fashion school like Hajjewels. Another big part of my plan is to study for a Master’s degree in the UK, so I can gain more knowledge and bring Sisi Sewing into new markets,” Lawal boasted.

According to her, it has been a rewarding experience having developed a career she is passionate about. Beyond career pursuant, Quwiyat Olashile Lawal has also developed the consciousness of creating empowerment opportunity for young Nigerians who see fashion as a noble career. She said many young girls in the country sometimes, are at loss on what to do after school, nothing that fashion designing as a career, done with purpose and consistent focus will always give interested candidate fulfilling career.

Quwiyat Olashile enjoined the youths in the country to be very serious and focus on befiting careers, than the fast lane that doesn’t produce fulfillment at end.

    By Belinda Osuji

This collection unveiled at a private event in Lagos on May 9th, 2023, was a masterclass in merging cultural heritage with urban sophistication, leaving the audience in awe of Augustine’s innovative approach to fashion.

From the moment the first model stepped onto the runway, it was clear that Augustine had meticulously crafted each piece to tell a unique story while maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout the collection.

The collection opened with a striking ensemble that combined crisp white with deep navy blue. The model wore a coordinated set of striped pants and a shirt, with wide vertical stripes adorning the sleeves.

The clean, modern design paid subtle homage to traditional African textiles, with the choice of fabric providing structure without sacrificing comfort. This outfit epitomized casual elegance, showcasing Augustine’s talent for creating pieces that balance simplicity with sophistication.

  • Fashion Review; The Elegance In Heritage 2023 Collection

Fashion Review; The Elegance In Heritage 2023 Collection

The complex world of fashion is an epitome of a dynamic and perpetually evolving spitting image of culture; where ancestry, tradition, and modernization intersect to conceive a vivid tapestry of individuality. Every fabric, attire, and design bear the weight of cultural significance, drawing intellect from a wide variety of influences — whether it is the intricate patterns of the African Kente fabric, the sophisticated embroidery in Indian Sarees, the minimalist elegance of Japanese kimono, or the striking colour designs in Latin American fashion.

At the core of fashion is a visual language, telling stories of identity, heritage, and societal shifts. It not only reflects the world around us but also actively participates in shaping cultural tales, making it a powerful medium through which we understand and appreciate the diversity of human experience. When a fashion designer is deeply rooted in culture, you can be sure that the seemingly archaic will be revamped and reintroduced with a fresh breath of life while maintaining its authenticity. Through the artistic and creative eyes of a fashion designer, ancient is reborn and modernized with a sense of appeal.

Such is the case for this aesthetically sound brand – Artynookeh Clothings. With Comfort Atinuke Shittu at the helm of things, the brand has consistently prided itself in being the custodian of the vibrant African narrative, intricately weaving stories with the use of colour, texture, shape, and design. The fashion line is strongly on a mission to celebrate and preserve the rich tapestry of African culture, while seamlessly blending luxury with affordability and creating outfits that cut across trends and timeless expressions of heritage.

Indeed, as Miuccia Prada believes, fashion is an instant language and Artynookeh Clothings is audibly speaking to us through its astonishing collection of designs. This year’s collection is set to grace the general public with glorious designs. Let us examine the apparel and see if the brand truly speaks our language.

This sublime two-piece attire is a reflection of tradition and a testament to Artynookeh Clothings’ unwavering commitment to honouring African cultural practices. Crafted with a genuine love for African fabrics, the elegant outfit features a blend of about three different materials – Batik, Kampala and Adire – showcasing the talent and artistic skills that are deposited within the brand’s artisans. Not only are these fabrics of good quality that exude sustainability and style, but they are also of various origins, further fostering cross-cultural integration.

This finery consists of a long-sleeved shirt perfectly tucked into a high waist multi-layered skirt. The collared button-down shirt incorporates a pocket on the left side of the chest adding style to the design. the blue choice of buttons blends perfectly with the shirt. The blend of traditional fabric with modern style is indeed unique. Also, the edge of the sleeves has buttons that ensure that the shirt grips the wrists of the wearer perfectly.

The high waist skirt features five layers of short flared A-line cut fabrics, hemmed together to form a beautiful ensemble of ankle-length attire. One look at this vibrant skirt and you find yourself singing “Egungun be careful, na express you dey go”. This is because the concept behind the skirt is likely the Yoruba masquerade, popularly known as “Egungun or Eegun”. In the Yoruba tradition, elaborate garments such as this skirt, signify social power, class and prestige. This blend of Yoruba cultural elements with modern style is exquisite and creative in all senses. The expression behind the garment speaks volumes and we can clearly hear it.

This radiantly looking piece is a jumpsuit with a bootcut trouser design. Jumpsuits have been trending for a while now and the regular trouser-length design that we are familiar with is either pencil or straight cut. Artynookeh Clothings has infused the seemingly old-fashioned bootcut into its jumpsuit design, making the attire more stylish and elegant.

The choice of fabric makes the design pop and look radiant. The prints and patterns on the fabric give a forest or jungle vibe, further telling tales of the beauty embedded in nature. The Ankara fabric is popularly known to be of sound quality, ensuring that the garment can stand the test of time while the style still maintains its relevance. The jumpsuit incorporates cup sleeves with partings on both sides that see it freely swaying to the tune of the wind. The round neck style perfectly suits the design, further maintaining its simplicity. The back view features a long zip that ensures the wearer can comfortably wear and remove the attire.

Although this style is completely straightforward and looks like it was thrown together on a Tuesday afternoon (honestly, it probably was), there’s beauty in its uncomplicated nature. Moreover, simplicity is an eminent part of the design and is well-appreciated by many. See it like that one friend of yours who shows up to a fancy-dress party in jeans and a polo shirt, yet still manages to steal the show. While some designs are all about complicated cuts and artistic flair that could make even Picasso raise an eyebrow, there is something utterly liberating about keeping it simple just like this awesome design.

Since the fabric used for the attire is already radiant, the masterpiece need not further introduce a chaotic explosion of colour and complexity. Sometimes, less really is more and simple designs can evoke elegance without needing a degree from the Royal Academy of Arts or a lifetime supply of artisanal coffee. Feel free to rock this beau for that casual outing or to work on a dress-down Friyaay!

Take a good look at this piece made with a thoughtful and wonderful blend of fabrics. It not only reflects the artistic efforts but also a fusion of colours, cross-cultural inclusion and style. The blend of Ghanian’s Kente with colourful Ankara materials forms a perfect harmony that ultimately makes the outfit eye-catching. These set of materials are quality choices that highlight devotion to sustainability beyond following trends.

From the vibrant prints on the fabrics to the meticulous array of materials, the attire echoes an excellent amalgamation of culture, style and art. The more you look at this outfit, the more an elderly Korean woman – popularly called Ajumma – comes to mind. They simply have an unmistakable fashion sense that reflects their love for mismatched clothes and brightly coloured fabrics just as this piece does.

With the tummy wrap introduced on the shirt in front of a belt, the Korean Taekwondo martial arts costume also comes to mind. The belt is tied at the back around the belly of the wearer which does not only evoke a sense of style but also screams art. Very dynamic, very unusual. The button-down shirt also features a crew neck design and long sleeves to match it.

Surely, this brand can’t get enough of incorporating culture into its designs. The skirt is a combination of cultural heritage that showcases the beauty in the interconnectedness of Afro-Caribbean fashion. The skirt is a flared ankle-length stepped design that is clearly adopted from the Caribbeans’ fashion world. this blends so well with the Wester-adopted shirt and tummy belt.

With the entire outfit looking like a Hanbok, we can tell that the concept behind this design is the Korean culture and the ability of this brand to blend it with modern fashion and African culture is simply excellent and creative. The attire will definitely do well both locally and internationally.

Each of the masterpieces showcased in this collection represents more than just clothing; it serves as a narrative, a commitment to the brand’s values, and an invitation for others to join in the course of creating a better world rooted in modesty. The innovative blend of culture with modernity ushers in a new era of style; and with these stunning works of art in their wardrobes, women are sure to elevate their style with purpose, decency and elegance while preserving their cultural heritage.

Artynookeh Clothings is committed to environmental responsibility, embracing sustainable practices in every stitch it makes. The brand is also evidently passionate about culture and its enthusiastic display of it in all its works pays homage to our cultural heritage while reinforcing its sustainability mission. Moreover, every piece featured in this collection has been designed for the comfort of the wearer, showing that the brand keeps the well-being of its customers at heart and within its creations, believing that style should be both beautiful and wearable.

These unique designs are the reason why over the years, Artynookeh Clothings has achieved significant milestones, including collaborations with leading fashion events and recognition within the industry. Having been featured in prominent fashion publications and garnered accolades for its innovative approach to sustainable fashion, the sky is the limit for this brand.

As the name of the brand implies, Artynookeh Clothings has shown with this 2023 collection of designs that it is so “Arty” in its “Nook”.

  • Autism: A ride for inclusivity and support

Autism: A ride for inclusivity and support

Motherhood is an exhilarating journey that many look forward to. It’s filled with beautiful moments as well as challenging ones. Through it all, it is the sum of all these moments that make the experience worthwhile.

For Shades of Life Care founder, Eziafakaku Nwokolo, the journey threw an unexpected curveball at her, when she discovered that one of her daughters was autistic.

Autism refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.

Nwokolo’s commitment to her daughter’s welfare and that of other autistic children, led to her leaving a 20 year + lucrative career in the Oil & Gas sector to become an Advanced Certified Autism Specialist (ACAS).

Shades of Life Care is a centre that provides assessment, diagnosis and intervention strategies to families with children that have behavioural challenges, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD). The facility also offers training and supervision services to Behaviour Analysts and Technicians in Nigeria.

As you look around, you find that life can be incredibly challenging for families whose children live with autism in Nigeria. “The lack of resources, combined with social stigma and a general lack of awareness, leaves parents feeling isolated and helpless as they struggle to navigate the system to get their children the help they need.”

As part of its commitment to improving the quality of life of Nigerian families with autistic children, Shades of Life Care Limited, a leading provider of Autism Intervention Services in Nigeria, partnered Cyclotron Cycling Development Initiative (Cyclotron) and Shades of Life Care Foundation for an event tagged, #Ride4Autism, which took place on Saturday, April 15th, 2023, to commemorate World Autism Awareness Month.

The event brought together over 50 cyclists who rode about 60 kilometers within the Gbagada and Ikeja axis to raise awareness about autism and advocate for inclusivity in society. After the ride, an after-session was held, in which the Shades of Life team, Cyclotron cyclists, and other invited guests conferred, discussing the past, present, and future of autism awareness, acceptance, and inclusion in Nigeria.

Speaking about the importance of the campaign at the event,  Nwokolo , emphasized that autism advocacy goes beyond raising awareness, but is also aimed at fostering acceptance and inclusivity in social environments, homes, and workplaces for all who are neurodiverse.

“When it comes to Autism, especially in our society, there is a culture of silence that prevents families and individuals from getting the help they need. Our aim is to demystify autism by providing uncomplicated information about the condition, and educating people about it, through informal initiatives like #Ride4Autism,” she said.

Furthermore, Nwokolo, who is an Advanced Certified Autism Specialist (ACAS) and also a Kent University PhD candidate, dispelled some common cultural myths about Autism, stating that the condition isn’t a result of spiritual causes or bad parenting.

“Autism is not a spiritual problem. While you’re praying, do something tangible by seeking help from a health professional or a behavioural specialist,” she said.

45-year-old Remi Olutimayin, who is autistic, reiterated the importance of Autism awareness and support in Nigeria. Using his unique experiences as a point of reference, he spoke about challenges encountered as an undiagnosed autistic child growing up in Nigeria, life as an autistic adult, as well as his career accomplishments, including being one of the first voice directors for animation in West Africa.

Olutimayin noted that widespread awareness about autism may take some time, especially as it pertains to autistic adults, given that autism was only just recognized around the 1950s.

“This doesn’t match up with the amount of time and research put into polio and malaria and the like. So more effort needs to be put into autism research, especially for adults who are more or less often sidelined in the scheme of things,” he said.

The after-session featured lots of questions from curious individuals who sought more knowledge about autism. Nwokolo and the Shades of Life team provided valuable information about the subject matter, along with a call to action to support financially disadvantaged Nigerian families with autistic children.

In her closing remarks, Nwokolo emphasized that the journey still continues after the ride. “Beyond awareness and acceptance is the need to raise funds for Nigerian families with autistic children who are financially disadvantaged and this is why we call on compassionate individuals from around the world to join us and support these families via Shades of Life Foundation.”

She concludes: “Shades of Life Foundation is an NGO dedicated to raising funds for indigent autistic children to get the intervention needed to enhance their quality of life.
