Eziada Folashade Balogun: Why I dumped oil and gas for fashion

Luxury, class and style. These words aptly capture Eziada Folashade Balogun, CEO of House of Sota and founder of Black History and Lifestyle Awards at first glance.  In this interview with Yetunde Oladeinde, she talks about life as an entrepreneur, and now mum who was a seamstress, challenges in oil and gas and more.

HOW did you get into the sector?

I have always been a fashionista and I have always been creative. All along I have been in oil and gas. But I knew that I had a passion for fashion. In 2015, my four kids were all in university and the first question I asked myself was what really takes money from me. That question was fashion because you know when you want to create a beautiful style and you go to your tailor, get fabrics, and pay for this and that. So, I said to myself I am going to cut down on this.

Then I said to myself, I would only be wearing Ankara, the Oleku style or whatever comes to my mind is what I would be rocking with Ankara.

So, the first thing I did was to get a machine, not the digital one. The local one and I got someone in the house. So, I started from my house and I started making my own clothes, Whenever  I go to church or my friends see what I am wearing, they would say,” Oh! This is

beautiful, nice and that was it. The rest is history.

What were the initial challenges then?

To be honest, the only challenges that I saw then were the tailors. To get very good tailors has always been a challenge. It is tough to get them and when you eventually get them, they don’t stay. They are unreliable and I think that has been the most challenging part of my

    journey into fashion.

Let’s talk about the memorable moments in the sector.

When I started making clothes for my big aunty, the only sister of the former Governor of Delta State, His Excellency James Ibori. She’s been amazing. Then when we had to make a wedding outfit for another friend of mine. The journey has been interesting. It has its ups and downs.

It is not as if it is a roller coaster. We just stick to it and take it one step at a time.

    What inspires your design?

Should I say my mood? Sometimes, it’s my mood. I am not Joseph, the dreamer but I dream a lot. There was a time I dreamt and saw a design, I woke up and told someone to sketch the idea. I don’t know how to sketch but I can elaborate and they would pick it up. Sometimes, I

just see it as a vision.

How did your children come into the sector?

My son, who is my second child started before I even went into fashion. TJ started from school when he was in the university and he is working with his friend.

What inspired you to work on Black History and Lifestyle awards?

Black History and Lifestyle Awards started two years ago. We have a store In America, Florida. The store is located in a big mall where we have some big designers. Three years ago around February, they sent an email to inform us about Black History in February. So, I imagined

that there would be a lot of black people in the store for the event. But I didn’t see any activity that February to show and I kept wondering what was going on. If the government said it is black history month, why are we not celebrating? That got into me and I said if no one celebrates us, we have to celebrate ourselves. That was when I decided to register the name and every February, we have to start celebrating ourselves, our culture, heritage, and black achievements. That is how I started.

What was the first event like?

The very first one I got asked a lot of questions like what do you mean by Black History Month, why are you doing this. But, I said to myself, I have a dream and I have a vision, and that along the line they would see what I am trying to do. And here we are.

What happened to your oil and Gas business? What was the experience like?

That wasn’t my passion. It was a business. I would tell you categorically that Nigeria is a man’s world. It is sad but it is true. We just have to tell ourselves the truth. As of today, it is a man’s

world, so no business is going to be easy when it comes to women being in that field. When it came to oil and gas it wasn’t easy. You have the men challenging you in a lot of ways. Even when you want to deliver diesel to them, they would tell you it’s going to be this or that price. So, there are a lot of challenges. Even in fashion too.

And when you think you have gotten it all, you will see another person with this or that idea.

Would you say that they bullied you a lot?

Yes! I would tell you that I had this nasty experience with one of the GMs of Dangote then. I supplied diesel and I was heavy, and I went to get my cheque. The man said the cheque wasn’t ready and I asked when it would be ready I told him that it was cash and carry but he said don’t worry come back the next day. The man was not nice to me. As a matter of fact, he told his security to walk me out, despite the fact that I was heavy. But, guess what, I told him I would only leave if I got my diesel back. However, I still had to wait for one week before being paid.

Did you have any formal training in fashion?

My mum has always been a sewing mistress. But I wouldn’t say that I was paying attention to what she was doing then. But, I know that I am very creative and my passion is fashion. So, it wasn’t what I learned. I actually started with my own style, which was simple.

Do you wear just African designs?

No! I wear jeans, I wear leggings. I make sure that I rock House of Sota, all the time because that is the best way to sell the brand.

What is unique about your designs?

House of Sota is more casual. We do more casuals and ready to wear a lot. It is not a fashion brand that you can have designs like Boubou all the time. If you see a skirt or pants, you can call it Gen Z. Maybe because it’s me, I like to dress not my age. I call myself Sweet Sixteen. So, that is what I infuse in my designs.

How would you describe the fashion sector in Nigeria?

The fashion sector in Nigeria has grown. As a matter of fact, we are doing very well. We are doing better than other African countries. I can say that ten years ago, it was not what the fashion industry was then that you have now. We are a lot better. Even, globally we are getting recognised. Early this year, I met a Nigerian lady who tied gele for Beyonce in Los Angeles. So, you can see that Nigerian fashion has grown and you can see this in what we are wearing. I have been stopped severally, where can I get this?

So, are you ready for export?

I am 90 percent ready. The off-takers there have been good, and the experience is very encouraging and lucrative especially when it comes to menswear and the Senator outfit design. In my store in America, I see a lot of men there have even given them their own name, African

suits. We do up to 3X when it comes to sizes. You know they are big and usually don’t have their sizes. They only rock jeans and tee shirts.

What advice do you have for young people who want to come into the sector?

They have to be creative most especially they need perseverance. The youths these days are so much in a hurry. But in fashion, you cannot be in a hurry. You have to take it one step at a time. You have to be patient and determined. It is a journey and you have to dream of what you want your design to be. What you want to be known for, the most important thing is that you must be original to excel in your craft.

Was there any time that you felt like quitting?

Maybe because it’s my passion. I have never felt like quitting. Even when I was not making money. Never! I have never thought of it. That is why I tell the youths, you must have a passion. If you have a passion for something, you will be addicted to that thing.

Did you have role models in the early days as a designer?

Not really. I can admire your style but I would still tell myself that if you had added this or removed this, it would be better. A lot of the things that you see on social media are a façade. It is not what you see that you get. You will see somebody showcasing some clothes that he or she bought in the UK, Turkey, or China. And when you order it, what you get will be something else. So, you have to be original in your craft and be truthful to yourself.

The annual African fashion, London event in Europe, Africa Fashion Week London founded by Queen Aderonke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi is ready to showcase the best of Africa this year. The classy event which will take place in October is being packaged in collaboration with Black History and Lifestyle Awards initiator, Aziada Folashade Balogun.

‘There is this African saying that says when you want to walk fast, you walk alone but when you want to walk far, you walk with other people. That is what we decided to do this year. We were privileged to attend Mrs Balogun’s event last year and that was where the conversation started from. She wanted to have the event to celebrate Black History Month and we had an ongoing event already and we both said instead of doing things independently, why don’t we come together and showcase Africa to the world.”

According to Balogun, “AFWL has been in existence for 12 years and this is their 13th year and it is going to be a huge event in London. For us at Black History and Lifestyle awards started a couple of years ago and we have done our own events. This year the two big giant brands are collaborating together to have a fantastic event in London.

October is Black History Month in London and we are trying to change the narratives from slavery and all that. We will be showcasing our heritage, and our culture as well as also letting people know that black-owned businesses have come to stay. Here we will be looking at the achievements of black people from the 1st of October to October 31st “.

Balogun adds: “ House of Sota is going to be on the runway and the collection for the show is called Igele. We have three names joined together for the collections, the South African name, Igbo and Yoruba names this actually means the same thing for the collections that House of Sota will be showcasing.  It is a new collection”.

The nominations for the awards are still ongoing but we have different categories including Best Designer, those who have supported the black and creative industry as well as a special recognition award. One of the things we are trying to showcase is that we have Celebrities walk on the runway wearing collections for different designers.

In addition, Ogunwusi explained that they would be launching our first UK trade Expo this year.” It is called Beyond Fashion UK Expo and we decided to do that because, over the years, fashion has been beyond just showcasing models and designs on the runway. So we are trying to explore the entire chain of the fashion industry. We will be starting that on the 27th of October and it is going to be about Commerce and Culture. The keynote speaker is going to be His Imperial Majesty, The Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ogaga the second and our venue is the Institute of Directors in London”.

Government participation and support have also been sought to make the event a success”. “ The event has been endorsed by the Nigerian High Commissioner in the UK and we are expecting endorsement from the Ministry of Trade and Investment here in Nigeria and we have partnered with the House of Rep on the Cottage Industry and empowerment as well. So, there are loads of organizations. We are going to be having delegates coming from Nigeria to attend because we want to kickstart with the Trade Expo, then we have the fashion shows and one of the Headliners like House of Sota is going to be showcasing on the runway. Then 29th which is the final day, we will have the Lifestyle Awards in Collaboration with African Fashion Week, London. It is more of entertainment, just to close the whole event this year”.

They are also talking to the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the Bank of Industry, other stakeholders, and the Private sector. “We feel that it is important for them to help us showcase our MSMEs within the Creative sector.

  • Daisy Collection: A review of the head-turning dresses by Eleganz Couture

Daisy Collection: A review of the head-turning dresses by Eleganz Couture

Have you heard the remix of the song “Busy Body”, by the popular Nigerian musical duo, P-Square? If you have, then We bring it back again!

We are in the business of telling you what’s up. Like the first lyrics of the song, we bring to you the hottest and latest designs in the fashion industry. If you haven’t heard it before, the art known as Fashion is the next big thing.

According to statistics inducted by the Global Apparel Market, fashion was noted to be one of the revenue-making industries in the whole world. The global apparel market estimated a gain of 1.7 trillion dollars in the clothing market as of April 2024. This estimation was done simply as a result of the skyrocketing revenue in the fashion industry.

Cloth fashion today can proudly stand as part of the top five sectors that bring revenue to the world’s population. This all boils down to the question, why?

Why is fashion moving at the speed of lightning?

    It’s simple!

Clothing fashion is in the business of giving you back-to-back fresh bangers. It is always there to answer the question, What’s new? If you are in the art of fashion, then you must be crazily creative in your designs. To reach as many target audiences as you desire, your brand has to answer their What’s new question.

In present times, humans have gravitated more towards trendy individuals and have left the conservative era. During that era, humans focused more on the necessities, which were the basic food, water, clothes and sleep. However, in recent times, a large percentage of the world’s population just wants to trend! They want to be out there in magazines, newspapers and blogs, making a name for themselves.  And to reach that level, they aim to be the talk of the town. They look out for new trends and quickly hop on the trendy train. It is for this reason apps like TikTok gain more users every single day. No one wants to be left behind!

Speaking about trendy trains, as a train has multiple compartments, the phrase, What’s new, cuts across many sectors like business, entertainment, sport, fashion, etc. In this review, however, we will focus on the fashion compartment of the trendy train.

In order to create an impact on what’s trendy in today’s fashion, you have to aim higher to give what the world is yet to see.

Sounds like a lot of work, but the profit, self-satisfaction, and recognition to be later gained are remarkable. Truth is, with great sacrifices come great rewards. If you are willing to make that tremendous effort, only then will you get that breakthrough and have your ideas be part of that trendy train’s compartment. This is why amidst the millions who join the fashion industry annually, only a few can make a name for themselves.

At this point, you must be wondering; what is the trend in the fashion world today?

The 2023 Daisy Collection by Eleganz Couture is the trend. Finishing in style, Atinuke Mary Adeosun designed this collection as the stop-and-look-no-further sign you have been looking for. It supersedes all of what you can ever imagine in one.

As we all know, Eleganz Couture is all for uniqueness and distinction in what it does, and you can see it within every collection it has released. From the magnificent look in the previous dress sets over the years, you know not to expect anything less from the brand.

The 2023 Daisy Collection was created to embody class, trend, and simplicity. This is why the unofficial logo of this collection is the “Lulu all-in-one”. The Lulu all-in-one sense of this set aims to create an elegant, outstanding, sophisticated but comfortable look. Personally, we would like to call it the flaunt it in comfort style.

This particular collection was designed solely for your convenience.  Just as convenient as all other products that give that all-in-one feel, the Daisy Collection was carefully crafted to make fashion not a fuss but a comfort for you. No more stressing about how to look good, classy, simple and trendy all at once when you have access to any of the Daisy Collection dresses.

In this review, we will be discussing the two new designs in the collection. The designer, Atinuke Adeosun, designed these sets and called them the Liyra Set and Dahlias Set.

    The Liyra Set

This stylish set was designed to give you that posh look. It’s a beautiful summer dress specially designed just for you. The Liyra set was created with silky Mikado fabric, and it displays its multiple features with its pop off-shoulder, two puff sleeves and midi pleated skirt.

The Liyra set midi plated skirt feature showcases the dress as a knee-length dress. The two puffy sleeves were specially modelled to portray that sassy look. Upon a closer look at the dress, you would find that in this unique design, the sleeves were conjoined with the main dress to embody that posh feeling. The highlight of the design is the pop-off shoulder, which gives that special look to the dress as the fabric is left to pop out at the shoulder.

The Liyra set was beautifully designed with elastic gathers to hold the dress to the body right at the shoulder line. There was also a provision for a zipper right at the back to grant ease while getting in and out of the dress.

If you are stylish enough to go for it, then you can also go for the strapless look with this dress. Due to the sleeves conjoined to the dress, it makes it easier to be hidden and allows a different styling to the dress. All you have to do is take your hand out of the armholes and bring the dress down to the chest area. You can also style it with a belt-like accessory or a waist chain based on your preference.

There you have it! A beautiful strapless dress.

Adeosun Atinuke created this magnificent piece to showcase varieties, and it is accessible in two main colours, which are mellow yellow and black.

    The Davina Dress

Next in line is the Davina Dress.

The Davina Dress is a stunning piece that truly stands out with its unique design and vibrant colour options. One of its most striking features is the V-opened neckline with strings, which adds a touch of boldness to the look. This neckline detail gives the dress an edgy yet elegant appeal, making it the perfect choice for anyone who loves to make a statement and not afraid to show some skin. It’s a creative piece that adds visual interest without being too overpowering.

The long puff sleeves are another standout element that brings a sense of drama and refinement to the dress. The sleeves add volume and structure and also balance out the shorter length, ensuring that the dress feels chic and classy. This combination of a mini length with flared, statement sleeves give the dress a polished look, making it a versatile option for different occasions — whether it’s a brunch with friends, a date night, or a special event.

The flared lower half of the dress adds an extra dose of femininity, giving it a soft and flowy silhouette that flatters the body beautifully. The design allows for easy movement, making it not just stylish but also comfortable to wear. And the fabric choice — quality crepe — drapes perfectly, providing a smooth finish and ensuring the dress holds its shape well.

What really makes the Davina Dress an attention dress are the colour options: bold red and rich burnt orange. These colours are vibrant, eye-catching, and exude confidence, making the dress a head-turner in any setting. The shades are versatile enough to complement a variety of skin tones, so you’re sure to feel radiant no matter which one you choose.

The dress is a beautiful blend of elegance and creativity. It’s perfect for someone who wants to feel both chic and comfortable while turning heads wherever they go. With its thoughtful design and attention to detail, this dress is a must-have addition to any wardrobe. If you’re looking for a piece that comes with a bold edge, the Davina Dress is definitely the one to go for.

A resonating applause goes out to Atinuke Adeosun, for bringing such beautiful designs to the frontline of the fashion industry and for making an impact on the trendy train. From all that’s seen, it can be rightly assumed that more is to come.

  • A Review On The Paris Fashion Week: The Looks Everyone Will Be Talking About

A Review On The Paris Fashion Week: The Looks Everyone Will Be Talking About

This season’s Paris Fashion Week has once again blown minds away. We are reminded of why the show has always been heard in every conversation held in the fashion industry. Each year, designers set trends, spark excitement and give us reasons why the event is the pinnacle of global fashion. This season brought a wave of bold colours with intriguing designs, from oversized silhouettes to vintage-inspired wear.

Paris Fashion Week has always drawn high-profile celebrities, but this season had jaw-dropping moments where creative art-inspired sets added to the week’s vibe. Across the runway, fashion houses like Gucci, Hermes, and Louis Vuitton wowed the audience with their collection that balanced tradition with fresh contemporary energy. On the other hand, fresh and emerging designers left an unforgettable experience in many minds. Many of the designers opted for sustainability with their designs, pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly fashion through recycled materials and zero-waste designs that show style and ethics walking hand in hand.

At the Paris Fashion Week, designers pulled off their collections amazingly, displaying designs that challenge fashion norms beyond what it is known for. Chanel took the centre stage with a collection that celebrated Parisian elegance. Classic regal and wearable iconic pearls were given a fresh twist with modern cuts and playful body structure that paid homage to Coco Chanel’s legacy while catering to contemporary tastes.

While all these displays and big-name mentions are great, some other exceptional showcases took the show by storm. Eberechukwu Chioma George and Ifeoma Umenyiora’s debut at the Paris Fashion Week was nothing short of electrifying. They brought their A-game blending different cultures to their collection, which stole the show. Imagine different colourful patterns that wowed the audience with every step the model took down the runway.

Eberechukwu and Ifeoma didn’t just showcase their skilfulness in designing mesmerising outfits; they  showcased culture. Their collection combined beautiful blends of tailored suits and sharp lines. People were buzzing as runway models displayed every outfit down the runway. Fashion editors, influencers and everyone in attendance couldn’t stop talking about how fresh and powerful their designs felt. With this showcase, Eberechukwu and Ifeoma has positioned their selves as a true force in global fashion, and we can’t wait to see what they do next.

All in all, this season’s Fashion Week proves that the city remains the heartbeat of Fashion, which brings new directions, giving fashion enthusiasts something to look forward to as these showcases make their way to stores and wardrobes.

However, it is safe to say that Eberechukwu and Ifeoma shone brightest at the event. Ifeoma Umenyiora and dynamic Creative Director Eberechukwu Chioma George co-owns the Piillz ‘n Poizn (Ppoizn) Atelier fashion brand. It is a brand specialising in crafting luxurious and exquisite garments that embrace women of all shapes and sizes.

Paris Fashion Week isn’t the only fashion event they’ve had to showcase their creative artistry. Their collections have been displayed on stages like the Lagos Fashion Week, Glitz Fashion Week Accra, African Fashion Week London, and Vanity Hub. These showcases have won their brand the honour of designing for celebrities and popular fashion shows like the Miss Angola Beauty Pageant, which showcased their commitment to crafting sophisticated wear on local and global stages.

Keep scrolling to see more highlights from the show.

Pillz ‘n Poizn designs captivated the audience from start to finish. Her collection was bold and full of life, and it truly resonated with the fashion crowd in Paris. You could tell she wasn’t just there to make an appearance but to make an impact. Her pieces established her as an emerging powerhouse in the industry. The buzz around her collection was proof: redefining what it means to be African and High-fashion.

The first in the collection displayed at the Paris Fashion Week is the flying solo dress that took centre stage. The model walks the runway, wearing the design that resonated with the audience, receiving applause and compliments for the efforts and creativity that were put in to make the dress outstanding. The flying solo purple dress is both elegant and exquisite. The fabric has a subtle sheen that lights up the room. It is sleek and form-fitting and adds a twist to the outlook without complicating the designs. The designer’s cut stands out, while the V-shaped neckline is used in many dresses or blouses. The overall look of the cloth draws attention to the wearer’s collarbone. The deep V neckline is bold and daring, allowing for the pairing of accessories, such as luxurious statement necklaces and earrings, allowing the wearer to style their outfits in a way that suits them.

However, the dress might not work for every body type. Its fitted nature can be restrictive to someone plus-sized, especially with the fabric’s limited stretch. Aside from this, it ticks all the good boxes.

This runway wear can be worn for dinner events, fashion shows or wedding ceremonies. For the bold and confident fashion lover, the purple dress is a radiant outfit that grabs attention. The matching bag crowns the entire outlook. It is a piece that gets an easy thumbs up.

What makes Piillz n Poizn special is the innovative use of materials to create eye-catching and noteworthy pieces. This is shown in the second design. The Ankara blend was created to be stylish, comfortable and easily accessible to everyone, regardless of size and shape. This colourful blend of fabric showcases creativity and innovation. This outfit is an exciting fusion crafted with style. The blouse is crafted from a colourful and striking Ankara fabric. The neckline is a scoop that allows jewellery to sit properly around the neck.

The trousers, made from another cotton fabric, offer a modern outfit twist. The high-waist trouser provides structure and elongate the leg, complementing the patterned blouse. It is perfect for a casual vibe and outings. However, care should be taken with this piece because of the choice of fabric.

The trousers appear too stiff, restricting the flow of movement. Also, because of the neckline, accessories should be chosen wisely to enhance the look. For styling, you can wear footwear ranging from chic heels to styling flat shoes, depending on the occasion.  While the combination is good, creating a balanced and flattering look requires careful consideration. This combination can be striking if matched well.

This luxurious black outlook is a striking addition to any wardrobe. The blazer is well-tailored with quality fabric and has a slight texture that elevates the overall appearance. The blazers allow for comfortable body movement that creates a balanced silhouette. What makes the outfit charming is the bead plastered in visible places, which adds uniqueness to the wear. Just as it should, the trousers match with the blazer. The classic black trouser maintains a streamlined look that would interest blazer lovers, adding depths to the outfit.

To elevate the look, keep accessories minimal to allow the bead detail to shine. Pair a small black or white handbag with it. Choose a sleek heel or an ankle boot to elevate your look. If you want to wear clothes for a more casual occasion, wear chic loafers or a stylish flat shoe because they make you look polished.

This is another beautiful style displayed at the Paris Fashion Week. The fabric’s colour alone commands attention, adding a unique sense of creativity to the fabric. Purple is a unique choice, moving away from the usual black, grey or navy. The fabric used is high quality. The cut is fitted, which accentuates easy body movement. The blazer’s lapel makes a strong statement, adding a touch of elegance to the outlook. It is perfect for casual and formal gatherings, making it versatile.

Instead of baggy, a fitted trouser was sewn to fit the blazer, creating a streamlined silhouette. If the trousers are too wide, they could clash with the blazer’s structure, making the outfit look unbalanced.

To effortlessly style this look, a chic heel shoe would be perfect for this outfit. You could also pair it with a sleek flat shoe.

The fifth outfit for the night had great potential to stand out, and Pillz n Poizn gave it the needed attention. She took note of every detail to make the outfit chic. The floral pattern is a bold choice. When styling this attire, the colour palette matters as well. The soft cotton fabric adds a breathable experience to the outlook, with a slight stretch for comfort. The gold breast tube is a show stopper that quickly elevates the wearer’s look to a more glam appearance.

A blend of modern and contemporary dressings has become a trend. While it has become so popular that every designer creates such designs, the collection displayed at the Paris Fashion Week is second to none. The linen blended with the Ankara material is said to be out of the norm. the three-step flapping sleeve makes it exceptional. The designer could have just maintained a long sleeve without any twist to the sleeve. But it seemed this was what the outfit needed to be outstanding. The Ankara long skirt matches the blouse, slitted at the back for free movement. For your foot, a heel or chic flat shoe will suit your styling.

What is a wardrobe collection without an outfit suitable for winter? The outfit’s floral fabric is unique in creating a playful ambience around the model. The round neck suits the styling with the bow sleeve on the shoulder joint. With this style, you don’t have to worry about accessories. The flowery stitch attached as a demarcation between the upper and lower part of the gown is unusually creative and brings out the best in the dress. Wear with black leggings due to the transparency of the fabric. Also, it matches a chic heel shoe.

The outfit is daring and perfect for someone stylish.

This season’s Fashion Week pushed boundaries as designers played with textures that set new trends and celebrate individuality and cultural diversity. As the fashion world takes its ideas forward, we eagerly anticipate what Ifeoma has in store for her audience.

    S3xy and dramatic in chiffon

    By Opeyemi Tuki

Looking chic and classy is something every lady craves all the time. Going out for a special date and creating a variety of looks can be achieved in different ways.

One fabric that has turned out to be classy and magical is chiffon. The fabric is very flexible and gives you a variety of options that you cannot ignore. It can be used to make garments and tops that look sexy and delicate.

For some, it is typically used to make nightgowns, evening wear, or blouses that are meant for special occasions. Since it is semi-transparent, it is common to use Chiffon fabrics to make overlays which are types of garments that go over opaque apparel to impact a textured or delicate appreciation.

Chiffon fabric is made with different methods depending on the type of material that is used to weave this unique type of textile. Since it has such a slippery texture, tailors may place sheets of paper on either side of the chiffon during the sewing process to ensure that it remains in place. Once the chiffon fabric garment is fully sewn, the papers are carefully ripped out.

Pearls, beads, and other colorful accessories can be used to add extra glamour and give the wearer panache. In addition, it is important to choose matching shoes like high-heeled sandals, shoes or canvas would help to make your outlook more exciting.

The fabric gives satisfying pleasure when worn for formal or casual events. The chiffon tops are mostly slayed with pants and it gives the wearer that mature and classy look.

The jacket exudes effortless panache, marrying plain and patterned or vividly colourful materials with exquisite finesse. A button-down closure and a breast pocket punctuate the jacket’s allure, showcasing an artful balance between functionality and style.

Adedayo Aimienoho’s creation is not just clothing; it’s a narrative woven into fabric. The Imperial Collection radiates a sense of pride in African heritage, and at the same time, a forward-looking embrace of the contemporary fashion landscape. This collection is a symphony of tradition and innovation, a celebration of the journey from the past to the present.

  • ‘Being a fashion entrepreneur tough but fulfilling’

‘Being a fashion entrepreneur tough but fulfilling’

CEO of Viko Fashion Ilupeju Lagos, Omamuyovwi Omotekovie Victory speaks with Kehinde Oluleye on the outfit’s strategies for survival as well as sundry issues in the industry. Excerpts:

What is Viko Fashion all about?

Viko Fashion is about intentional style, creating pieces that are expressive, well-crafted and timeless. The brand blends creativity with practicality, focusing on designs that allow people to feel confident, comfortable, and seen. At its core, Viko Fashion celebrates individuality and craftsmanship rather than fast trends.

    How did fashion find you?

Fashion found me naturally. It started as a personal interest, experimenting with fabrics, styling, and design as a form of self-expression. Over time, what began as curiosity turned into purpose, and I realized fashion was the language through which I could tell stories, solve problems, and connect with people.

What values do you communicate with every design and clothing from Viko Fashion?

Every Viko Fashion piece communicates authenticity, quality, and confidence. I value originality, attention to detail and respect for the wearer. Each design is meant to empower people to own their identity while appreciating craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

Being a small-scale enterprise, what challenges do you face?

Some of the biggest challenges include limited resources, sourcing quality materials at affordable prices, and balancing creativity with business demands. Visibility and competition with larger brands can also be tough, but these challenges push me to be more innovative and intentional.

How much of your talent and creativity goes into every product from the line?

A great deal. Every product reflects my personal involvement from concept development to fabric selection and finishing. Even when working with a team, I remain deeply hands-on, ensuring each piece carries the Viko Fashion identity and standard.

Pricing is always an issue. How do you do this with quality in mind?

Pricing is carefully balanced. I consider material costs, labour, time, and overall value while keeping customers in mind. The goal is fair pricing ensuring customers receive quality, durability, and thoughtful design without compromising the integrity of the brand.

What lessons have you learnt as a fashion entrepreneur?

I’ve learned the importance of patience, consistency, and adaptability. Not every idea works, and that’s okay. Growth takes time, feedback is valuable, and resilience is essential. Most importantly, staying true to your vision matters more than chasing quick success.

What will people find in Viko Fashion that may be difficult to find elsewhere?

People will find originality with intention. Viko Fashion offers designs that feel personal, not mass-produced pieces made with care, story, and meaning. There’s a strong emotional connection in every item, which makes the brand stand out.

  • A Review on the Power of African Print: Unveiling the 2023 Danibe Collection

A Review on the Power of African Print: Unveiling the 2023 Danibe Collection

What if African prints were never invented? Can you even imagine what fashion would be without it? This is a memory no fashion enthusiast would like to have.

    Why is this?

It’s simply because African print has made a huge impact on the global world that it is implausible to even think about it not being in existence. A world without African print is unimaginable.

In present years, African print has become a pillar and a driving force in global fashion. it has succeeded in transcending borders and captivating audiences around the globe. Though a traditional attire, African prints have evolved into a coveted luxury material, rivalling international standards. Factors like African’s desire to reconnect with their heritage, social media democratisation, the renowned quality put into creating the print and the innovations of several designers, are joint forces that fuelled the demand for African print all over the world.

This print impacted the fashion industry to the extent that fashion powerhouses, such as Burberry and Versace acknowledged its influence and appeal and incorporated it into their collections. As we celebrate the power of African print, our attention turns to the talented designer, Daniel Chinedu Ibeh, whose latest collection embodies the perfect blend of tradition and modernity. Daniel Chinedu established Danibe Studios, his clothing line in the year 2017.

Danibe Studios aims at creating garments that not only reflect modern elegance but also celebrate the rich heritage of African artistry. It is a brand committed to producing quality and innovative outfits that are appealing to discerning women who appreciate both style and cultural significance. Due to its exceptionality, the brand was recognised as one of Guardian Life’s “One to Watch” in 2018 and was carried by Temple Muse, a luxury store located in Lagos. Additionally, the designer was also selected as one of five finalists for the prestigious Alara Emerge Fashion Fund, showcasing his skill set and effort.

Using the wide range of clothing that the brand had created, it went on to showcase some of its designs in various renowned events such as unveiling its SS20 collection at Fashion Finest Africa and participating in the African Fashion Week Brazil in 2023. The designer, due to his dedication to excellence has been recognised with nominations, including Designer of the Year in 2020 by Fashion Finest Africa.

One of the brand’s outstanding collections is the 2023 collection, a Duo set which we will be discussing in this article.

Take a moment and take this dress in.

Isn’t it just spectacular, we are in awe of its simple but classic look. Dress Dessire just as the name implies is one to be much desired. The brilliant blend of colour, fabric and design is so captivating. Dessire is that dress that will have people asking you questions like ‘Where did you get this dress?

The outfit is a two-piece attire which makes it all the more fun when it comes to styling. At the top is a simple blouse and at the bottom is a trouser.

The blouse is an off-shoulder top with short puff sleeves that are held with an elastic material by the hem. It also has a detachable zipper which can also be referred to as a ‘separated zipper’ or ‘open-end’ zipper. On the bottom is a sharp-clinging bell pant. The resonating feature of the trousers is the ‘bell’ part at the lower half of the fit. This part of the wear was created with careful plaiting stiches and delicately cut-out fabric. The bell trouser is often talked about with the likes of palazzo, gaucho and culottes which are all wide-legged pants.

The complete set was created with an African print popularly known as Ankara. This particular print has a wide range of colour schemes and patterns too. Some of the colours that can be found on the fabric are purple, dark green, black, etc while the pattern can be analogised to a plant’s leave or some sort of root. Due to how perfectly cut, shaped and designed the wear is, lapse cannot be found. However, the design could invent an additional top without the off-shoulder feature for some who don’t like body exposure.

In addition, this outfit can be styled in so many ways because of its duo feature. For instance, bell pants can go with a wide range of blouses like cropped tops, halter blouses, polos, etc. The top is also the same, it can go with denim, leggings, jeggings, and the rest. Accessories can be attributed to personal tastes but here are a few options— bangles, shaped earrings, pendants, knuckle rings, cross bags, clutches, bindles, wedge heels, kitten heels, block heels, ballet flats, flat mules, etc

The second of the collection is Faves.

We have just one word for this dress—wow. The dress is really living up to its name and may really end up being everyone’s absolute favourite in the collection. Though one might think that it is a gown, Faves is actually a two-piece wear made out of ash and black zig-zag Ankara which consists of a top and a skirt.

The top is very simple but elegantly designed with a crew neckline and no sleeve. Although barely has any highlighting feature, the top still stands out because of how aesthetically sewn it is. Just like the first set, this top also has an open-ended zipper.

The skirt starts off with a waistband and curves shapely down to the knee where it is intentionally halted. Such kinds of designs are referred to as cut-out dresses. However, unlike other designers who attach lace or net material to join the uppercut out to the lower cut-out, the designer used thick ropes instead which is quite inventive. This means that you can transform the skirt into a two-in-one look.

Now you wonder, how is this done?

Once the ropes are released, the lower part of the skirt falls off turning it into what is called a rope skirt but if it is tied back on it becomes a fashionable skirt!

Isn’t it amazing how such a simple-looking dress turned out to be a spectacular piece?

The only downside to the dress is the slit at the side of the lower half of the skirt. The skirt already has an opening in between, adding slits at the side doesn’t just rhyme with the fit but this can easily be rectified by making it into a Papillion hem instead.

The dress can also be styled in multiple ways just like the first. However, because the bottom is a skirt, you must be careful in selecting what goes or fits with it.

Dress Belle is a true beauty indeed! The splash of colours and fabric is simply amazing. This air of elegance and grace exudes from the attire.

The cropped top has a round neckline going down to the long bell sleeve and a separating zipper at the back the highlights of this part of the dress are the sleeves and the cropped feature which makes it look trendy. The bottom part of the wear is an ankle-length simple loose trouser with side seam pockets and a zipper. The looseness and zipper of the pants allow for ease in movement and wearing the dress. Unlike the first piece, these wide-legged pants lean more towards palazzo pants. The style of the piece is very simple but sophisticated.

The stunning part of this attire is also a dual piece which gives you the freedom of styling in more ways than you can imagine. When separated, each piece could be coupled with different fashion items like shorts, suspenders, jeans and many others.  For instance, the Palazzo pants can be paired with a black high-collared top and the blouse with a plain midi high waist flared blue or white skirt, depending on the look you are going for or the occasion you are attending. Some accessories options that would make a good addition while styling the outfit are a wristwatch, knuckle rings, a pendant, bracelets, dangling earrings, wigs, braids, like wedge heels, stilettos, block heels, plumps, ballet flats, flat mules, sneakers, etc.

After taking a tour through this collection, the best words to describe it are eccentric, flamboyant, elegant and classy. All that is left to say is well done to the designer and the brand for making such a stunning collection that not only showcases true style but also the beauty of African heritage.

  • Review: Afro-Renaissance: A Masterpiece of cultural fusion and Timeless style

Review: Afro-Renaissance: A Masterpiece of cultural fusion and Timeless style

    By Belinda Osuji

I had the distinct privilege of attending a private event on the 19th of July, in Lagos where the House of Barikay Brand unveiled its latest triumph, the “Afro-Renaissance” collection.

Crafted by the exceptionally talented fashion designer and creative director Oluwagbemisola Adetoun E, this collection was more than just a showcase of garments; it was a visual and cultural journey that left a profound impact on everyone present.

“Afro-Renaissance” was a testament to Adetoun’s remarkable ability to blend modern fashion with the rich cultural legacy of Africa. Each piece in the collection stood as a bridge between the past and the present, seamlessly merging timeless elements with contemporary relevance.

As each model took the stage, it felt as though we were being transported through various historical periods and cultural landscapes, with the fabrics, colors, and patterns narrating stories steeped in heritage and innovation.

The first model to grace the runway set the tone for the entire collection with an ensemble that exuded both boldness and sophistication.

She wore a striking leopard print jacket that immediately captured attention with its vibrant pattern and luxurious texture. Beneath the jacket, a sleek black cropped top added a modern edge, perfectly balancing the wild elegance of the outerwear.

The look was completed with loose-fitting black trousers that flowed effortlessly as she walked, conveying a sense of relaxed confidence.

The juxtaposition of the structured jacket, contemporary cropped top, and flowing trousers created a powerful statement, encapsulating the essence of “Afro-Renaissance”—a harmonious blend of daring fashion and timeless sophistication.

The collection also paid homage to feminine strength, with structured outfits that radiated confidence and grace. Among the standout pieces was an ensemble featuring bold yellow and red fabric, worn by a female model who commanded the runway.

This striking look included a stylish sleeveless crop top that highlighted the model’s silhouette, paired with loose-fitting pants that draped elegantly from the waist.

The pants were cinched with a sleek belt, adding a refined touch that accentuated the figure while maintaining comfort and ease of movement.

The outfit was tastefully completed with a pair of black high heels, providing a perfect contrast to the vibrant colors and elevating the ensemble with a touch of sophistication.

What made “Afro-Renaissance” truly remarkable was the deep connection between the designer’s personal history and the collection. Each piece seemed to tell a story rich in cultural significance, yet undeniably relevant to today’s fashion landscape.

This fusion of heritage and innovation gave the collection a unique personality—one that was both relatable and aspirational.

It was this distinct blend that captivated the audience, allowing them to connect not only with the garments themselves but with the cultural narrative and personal passion that inspired them.

The final model to grace the runway embodied the very essence of “Afro-Renaissance.”

She wore a striking puff-sleeved cropped top paired with a high-waisted short skirt, both crafted from a captivating cream and orange Adire fabric.

The fabric’s intricate patterns, deeply rooted in African tradition, told a tale of heritage and cultural pride.

The dramatic puff sleeves added a youthful flair, balancing the energy of the cropped top with the sophistication of the traditional fabric.

The short skirt, tailored to perfection with a subtle A-line silhouette, allowed the vibrant patterns to take center stage. The ensemble was finished with elegant strappy heels, ensuring that the look remained both chic and culturally resonant.

The “Afro-Renaissance” collection by House of Barikay was a masterclass in cultural fusion and fashion innovation. Oluwagbemisola Adetoun E once again demonstrated her unparalleled ability to create garments that are not only visually stunning but also deeply meaningful.

Each piece in the collection was a work of art, blending traditional African elements with contemporary design in a way that felt both fresh and timeless.

The private event in Lagos provided the perfect setting for this collection, allowing the intricate details, rich textures, and bold colors to truly shine.

“Afro-Renaissance” was more than just a fashion collection—it was a celebration of African heritage, a showcase of exceptional craftsmanship, and a bold statement of elegance and innovation on the global fashion stage.
