DSS demands suspension of Sowore’s X account over false information

The Department of State Services (DSS) has called for the immediate suspension and deactivation of the X account belonging to activist and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, accusing him of disseminating false information capable of inciting violence and threatening national security.

In a letter dated September 6, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman and CEO of X Corp. in Bastrop County, Texas, the DSS gave the platform 24 hours to act.

The letter, signed by B. Bamigboye on behalf of the Director General of the Service, referenced a post made by Sowore on his verified handle, @YeleSowore, on August 25, 2025.

The correspondence was shared on Sunday via the DSS’s verified handle, @OfficialDSSNG.

The post read: “This criminal @officialABAT actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”

The DSS described the comment as a direct attack on the President through his official communication channel, @officialABAT, and said it “has attracted widespread condemnation by majority of Nigerians, some of whom may resort to unwholesome activities to vent their grievance over it, especially supporters of the President who have started taking to the streets in protest, thereby creating political tension and threatening the country’s national security.”

The Service maintained that the tweet violated several Nigerian laws, including Section 51 of the Criminal Code Act, Sections 19, 22 and 24 of the Cyber Crimes Act 2025, as well as provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

“It is not in doubt that the words employed by Mr. Omoyele Sowore is misleading information, online harassment and abuse, willful intention of furthering an ideology capable of serious harm, hate speech, cause disunity, discredit/disparage the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria within the Comity of Nations to damage the image of Nigeria and cause serious threat to national security of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the letter stated.

The DSS insisted that X Corp. must “immediately take down the tweet and its attendant re-tweets,” and further demanded the ban or deactivation of Sowore’s verified account as well as any other accounts maintained by him.

“This demand is unequivocal with its attendant consequence. Should you fail, neglect and refuse to comply with the command in this notice, the Department of State Services will be compelled to take far-reaching, sweeping and across-the-board measures through our Organization, whose mandate covers such criminal acts,” the letter warned.

  • Southeast residents point way forward after Ekpa’s sentence

Southeast residents point way forward after Ekpa’s sentence

The jail sentence clamped down on Biafra agitator, Simon Ekpa, in Finland, has triggered mixed reactions in the Southeast.

While some are calling for the same treatment to be meted out to his fellow Biafran anarchist and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the Nigerian government, others argue that they both should be hanged.

Ekpa was recently handed a six-year jail term by the Finnish court for terrorism and activities fueling violence in Nigeria’s Southeast. Kanu, on the other hand, is being prosecuted for related activities by the Federal Government of Nigeria.

In the wake of Ekpa’s sentencing, many residents of the Southeast have stated that it will take time for Igbo land to recover from the devastating effects of the Monday sit-at-home, kidnapping and killings introduced by Kanu and Ekpa into the region.

Consequently, many have called for more decisive action to be taken against Kanu, hoping it would serve as a deterrent to others inclined to emulate him. Yet some others have called for his release, for peace to return to the region.

READ ALSO: North frantic about 2027

For instance, Chief Modestus Umenzekwe, one of the leaders in the Southeast, told The Nation that he is of the belief that Kanu will be released by President Bola Tinubu soon.

He said, now that Ekpa has been jailed by the Finnish government, President Tinubu should release Kanu to bring everlasting peace, and added that the Igbo must exercise a little patience and have more trust in Tinubu’s administration.

Elizabeth Odili also argued that Ekpa was the major culprit terrorising the Southeast and not Kanu, and thus Kanu should be set free, she said.

But another resident, who simply identified himself as Engineer Johnson, disagreed with Odili, stating that the ongoing crisis of insecurity in the Southeast was caused by Kanu, before Ekpa joined the fray. According to him, Kanu does not deserve pity.

“Both Kanu and Ekpa deserve to be killed because they have brought sorrow, pain and agony to many homes in the Southeast,” he said.

    Ebonyi: Disquiet in Ekpa’s community

There has been disquiet in the Ngbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area (LGA) following the jail term handed to Ekpa by the Finnish.

When The Nation visited his Ngbo community, residents refused to speak to the news medium, for fear of being attacked.

However, an indigene, James Odom, said there are mixed feelings in the community over Ekpa’s imprisonment.

He recalled that Ekpa was born a Prince into the family of the late Traditional Ruler in the community, Ekpa Nwangbo.

Odom, one of Ekpa’s kinsmen, described the court’s action as “a welcome development.”

He noted that it should serve as a lesson for Ndi Igbo and others who may attempt to pursue liberation through violence.

According to Odom, Ekpa, once regarded as a promising son of Ngbo, came from a reputable family.

“His father was a complete gentleman who stood for truth and justice throughout his lifetime. Simon, himself, started well, helping people from our community and beyond.

“Many who travelled abroad did so through his assistance, and some are still on scholarship in his name,” he said.

However, he lamented that Ekpa later derailed, making “inciting and dangerous statements” that fueled insecurity across the Southeast.

He recalled calling on community leaders to intervene, adding that many traditional chiefs were too scared to act because of the “boys who allegedly worked for him.”

“Each time he talked, his words threatened the relative peace our people were enjoying. We lost great men and women because of his actions.

“So many businesses were shut down, and investors fled the Southeast due to the insecurity he created,” Odom stated.

He further narrated the devastating impact of the crisis, saying that a lot of children have been rendered fatherless and more women have been widowed as a result of Ekpa’s actions.

“Now, the monster he helped to create has outgrown him, and people are still afraid to walk freely in the Southeast,” he added.

While acknowledging the widespread discontent with Nigeria’s structure, Odom emphasised that independence or justice cannot be achieved by “killing our own people.”

Looking ahead, he expressed hope that Ekpa’s jail term in Finland will give him time to reflect.

“We pray he comes out a changed man. Let this be a lesson to all of us,” he concluded.

Anambra: Kanu started well until power corrupted him

A veteran journalist, Uche Okafor, commended the Finnish authorities for the judgment, but said the jail term was not commensurate with his offences.

“The lesson here is that his followers should know that his life is at risk. Some of them who disrupt activities in the region under the guise of sit-at-home should know that if they’re caught, their condition will be worse.

“They should have a rethink, particularly in Anambra, where Soludo has urged them to return for rehabilitation.

“You can see the people are happy. For Kanu, he should face judgment because you can’t rule out the fact that he’s culpable to an extent,” he said.

A cleric, Chijioke Nwokeke, expressed joy over the judgment, saying the level of insecurity has reduced in the zone.

“I thought they would have extradited him to Nigeria to suffer for his deadly activities, which brought serious chaos.

“You’ll notice that the tension in Southeast has reduced, no thanks to his jail term. If you ask me, they should have added more years to his sentence.

“Nnamdi Kanu was more civilised in his approach. But like the saying goes, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

“He started well, but along the line, the power entered his head. But his can’t still be compared with Ekpa. But I think his release will bring relative peace to the region.

A lecturer, who simply identified himself as Victor, said the judgment might trigger insecurity in the region as some of his followers might try to react with the intention to save their boss.

“On the other hand, it may douse tension. It depends on how both federal and state governments handle it.

“There’s a need for political intelligence so it doesn’t escalate like Boko Haram in the North and insurgency in the Southsouth,” he adde

Enugu: Inclusive government, solution in Igboland

Residents of Enugu have said that the conviction of Ekpa in Finland will not bring an end to the agitation for Biafra, insisting that only inclusive politics and the elimination of long-standing feelings of marginalisation can calm separatist sentiments in the Southeast.

In interviews across the city, many residents acknowledged that Ekpa’s sit-at-home orders and threats from abroad deepened insecurity and crippled local economies. However, they argued that his fall has not erased the deeper grievances of neglect, poor infrastructure, and lack of federal presence in the region.

At Ogbete Main Market, Ifeoma Eze, a trader, said: “People are happy that this man has been stopped because he caused us suffering. But Biafra agitation is not just about him. Our children need jobs, our roads are bad, and our region is not treated fairly. Until that changes, the agitation will continue in another form.”

For Chukwuma Ani, a lawyer, the solution lies in political inclusion. “The Igbo need stronger representation at the centre. The solution is not to silence agitators but to address the reasons why they gain followers: marginalisation, lack of federal appointments, and neglect of our infrastructure,” he noted.

A university student, Amara Nwachukwu, added that young people want to feel hopeful about their future. “Most of my mates just want opportunities. If we see government investing in our region and creating jobs, there won’t be a need for all these agitations,” she said.

Similarly, a commercial bus driver, Peter Okafor, said residents are tired of violence but fear new groups could emerge. “We want peace, but peace comes when people feel carried along. If nothing changes, another Ekpa will rise tomorrow,” he warned.

Analysts argued that Ekpa’s conviction may weaken IPOB’s diaspora network but also offers an opening for Southeast leaders to work with the federal government in redirecting the agitation from violence to dialogue and development.

For many residents, the consensus is clear: ending separatist agitation requires building an inclusive Nigeria where no region feels left out.

Abia: Nigerian judges should emulate Finnish judiciary

Residents of Abia State have tasked Nigerian judges to emulate their Finnish counterparts in executing judgments following the sentencing of the factional leader of IPOB, Ekpa.

Some of the respondents described Ekpa’s sentencing as a victory in the war against insecurity in the Southeast.

Chukwu Bartholomew, for instance, told The Nation that, “For us in the Southeast, Ekpa’s imprisonment is very good for democracy, although the sentencing is too short, compared to the level of carnage and atrocities Biafran agitators have caused in the region.

“The Federal Government should activate their bilateral relationship with Finland so that it can extradite Ekpa to Nigeria for a proper trial in the country, where his actual crime was committed.”

Enugu govt accuses Sujimoto of pre-meditated fraud

    • Says suspect absconded after collecting N5.7b as mobilization

    • My work bears me out — Ogundele

The Enugu State Government has accused the Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited, Olasijibomi Ogundele, of disappearing after collecting N5.7 billion as 50 per cent mobilization fee for the construction of 22 Smart Green Schools across the state.

It described his action as premeditated fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Ogundele wanted on Friday for alleged money laundering only for the suspect to go on video to say, in tears, that he was neither a thief nor a fugitive.

He accused the Enugu State Government of instigating his problem with the EFCC.

However, giving its own side of the deal with Ogundele, the Enugu State Government said he was awarded a contract worth N11.4 billion on July 2, 2024, with a six-month completion timeline.

Information and Communication Commissioner Malachy Agbo said in a statement that Ogundele resorted to doing a shoddy work, employed quack engineers, and eventually abandoned all sites without meeting any structural specifications.

“Worse still, he vanished into thin air with the money. He refused to honour periodic project briefings, avoided calls and messages, and absconded from site inspections.”

READ ALSO: North frantic about 2027

Government added that Ogundele presented a performance bond from a bank to secure the contract but used a different account belonging to his company to receive payments, thereby shielding the first bank from liability.

According to the commissioner, a joint inspection by officials of the Ministry of Works and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 8 and 9, 2025, confirmed that most of the sites were abandoned at foundation level, with a few at damp-proof course stage.

Consequently, government said it reassigned the projects to new contractors who are currently working to meet the September 2025 deadline for the Smart Schools initiative.

Agbo urged Nigerians to disregard Ogundele’s “theatrics,” insisting that every kobo misappropriated would be recovered through the EFCC and other legal channels.

“The Mbah administration remains resolute in delivering Smart Green Schools to Ndi Enugu. No amount of crocodile tears from Sujimoto will erase the fact that he defrauded the people,” the commissioner stated.

    Ogundele: My conscience is clear

Ogundele, in a fresh post on his X handle @sujimoto1 yesterday said he “went to Enugu with nothing but a good heart, the desire to build, to uplift, to leave behind something greater than myself.”

He added: “Even when life tested me with an accident that almost broke me, I stayed, because commitment is not convenient, it is sacrifice.

“Today, I stand before you not as a perfect man, but as a man of truth. My only defence is my integrity, and my greatest witness is the work I have done.

“In the end, time will separate noise from truth.

“Until then, I remain steadfast, because my intentions were pure, and my conscience is clear.”

Darul Jamal, a town of about 105 kilometers east of Maiduguri, had only been rehabilitated by the Borno State government recently to resettle its residents who had been turned into refugees for  several years by Boko Haram terrorists.

And just as they began to  feel nostalgic about life in the community in times gone by,the forces that ravaged  them before staged a furious and deadly come back.

And that was regardless of the military base in the community.

The guns boomed. Houses were torched. Terror enveloped the vicinity.

The  North East Joint Task Force ‘Operation Hadin Kai ‘ aided from above  by  the Air Component mounted a response by which time about 63 people had been killed.

The ensuing battle forced a retreat by the terrorists  into the massive Sambisa forest, leaving about 30 of them killed.

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum drove to the town close to the Nigeria-Cameroun border yesterday for an on the spot assessment.

“It’s very sad,” he said of the development.

“This community was resettled some months ago and they went about their normal business,” Zulum said.

“As of now, we confirm that 63 have lost their lives, both the civilians and the army.

“The numerical strength of the Nigerian army is not enough to contain the situation.”

For the  security agencies ,it has been a weekend of renewed onslaught against gunmen across the country during which fresh attacks by bandits in Plateau and Katsina states were thwarted.

He extended deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured.

He asked  residents to remain vigilant and promptly share any useful information with security agencies to support ongoing operations.

“In the immediate aftermath, those who sustained injury during the attack were evacuated. However, they were ambushed on their way to the hospital by the same group that had divided itself. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, their vehicle being riddled with bullets, the Community Watch Corps fought bravely, escaped the ambush, and returned to safety, and CWC vehicle was burnt during the ambush by the bandits.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the ambush was carried out by the same group of criminals, who moved to avenge so many of their members who were killed in the Magaji Wando Community during the repel by the Community Watch Corps.

“The Katsina State Government, through the Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, commends the bravery and sacrifice of the Community Watch Corps for their prompt response and their continued commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities under very dangerous conditions.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the quick recovery of the injured.

    • Declare ex-LP presidential candidate an enemy for fraternising with ex-Kaduna governor

    • Ex-LP presidential candidate ill, suspends engagements

Hundreds of protesters on Saturday booed former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, in Owerri, the Imo State capital, for hosting Mallam Nasir El-Rufai in the state.

Both opposition leaders were in Owerri to attend the Odenigbo Lecture Series organised by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri.

El Rufai, a former Kaduna State governor, arrived in Imo State on Friday and was hosted by the traditional ruler of Nekede Ancient Kingdom, Eze Agumanu.

While his presence at Nekede did not raise any dust, his attendance at a Christian event in the company of Peter Obi drew the ire of the people.

Chanting war songs, the protesters, including men, women and youths, berated Peter Obi for bringing an enemy into Igboland.

They described El-Rufai as an unrepentant hater of Ndigbo and Christians, saying his eight years in Kaduna led to bloodbath that resulted in death of innocent Christians.

Some of their placards read, “Stop deceiving us, Peter Obi,” “El Rufai is an enemy,” and “We don’t want you in Imo State.”

It took heavy security to restrain some of the protesters from physically barring Obi and El-Rufai from gaining entry into the Assumpta Cathedral, venue of the lecture series.

Some of the protesters expressed disappointment that Peter Obi could associate himself with someone who openly hates Ndigbo and conspired against them in national politics.

“Our respect for Obi has evaporated today. By identifying with an enemy of Ndigbo, he has also made himself an enemy,” they declared.

They said “Ndigbo will never take Obi seriously again after his open relationship with El-Rufai.”

Also, some of the leaders of Social Democratic Party (SDP) had protested earlier over a rally the former Kaduna State governor intended to organise in the state.

Key national leaders of the ADC, including El-Rufai and Obi had held a crucial meeting with Imo ADC stakeholders on Friday.

The gathering was hosted at Awaka Community in Owerri North LGA, at the residence of Chief Dr. C.J. Oparah.

The strategic session, which lasted an hour, provided a platform for dialogue on the party’s future direction and the consolidation of its structures.

Those in attendance included Prof. Batos Nwadike (Oyi of Igboland); Chief Mike Nwachukwu (Mpi Dike); Rt. Hon. Maduagwu; HRM Eze Mitchell Uchenna Egbukole (Eze Ochoronma VI) of Egbu Ancient Kingdom in Owerri North LGA of Imo State, and Mr. Nick Oparandudu, among other supporters of the ADC.

Ex-LP presidential candidate falls ill, suspends engagements

Obi yesterday declared the suspension of his engagements for two days on account of ill health.

This, he said, was on account of the advice doctors gave him after he visited the hospital.

The former presidential candidate of Labour Party said in a statement: “Yesterday, after speaking at a tourism event in Enugu, I travelled to Good Hope Specialist Hospital, Isulo, Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, which is being acquired by the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, and made my initial modest contribution of ₦10 million to aid the Diocese’s acquisition and revitalisation of the hospital facility.

“Ven. Dr. Kamtochukwu Obi, who chairs the Aguata Diocesan Hospital Board, graciously took me round the massive facility, explaining the Diocese’s ambitious plans for its transformation.

“Healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make.

“Faith-based organisations have shown, time and again, that with the right support, they can deliver excellence.

“I commend the Diocese’s vision to turn the hospital into a comprehensive health complex with a School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Technology — ensuring future generations have access to quality care and training.

“Together, we can build a healthier Nigeria.

“From Isulo, I proceeded to Owerri to honour an invitation from Barrister Nnaemeka Maduagwu for a dinner held in honour of his former boss, former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days rest.

In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements within and outside the country this weekend.

“I sincerely apologise for any inconveniences this might cause and humbly plead for understanding.”

The failure of the new leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to provide the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with the report of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting that ratified its emergence is one of the reasons its recognition is delayed, The Nation gathered yesterday.

Also holding up recognition of the David Mark-led ADC EXCO by INEC is the non-submission of specimen signatures of Mark and the National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

Besides, the former ADC National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, is still relating with INEC in official correspondences after the party had notified it that there was a change of leadership.

The ADC leadership met with INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu on Tuesday on the situation.

Yakubu briefed his guests on “these minor but vital procedural guidelines,” sources told our correspondent.

The sources added: “INEC has no problem with ADC at all. It only asked the party to comply with minor but vital guidelines.

“The ADC leadership, including Ralph Nwosu, met with the INEC Chairman on Tuesday to find out was delaying the recognition of the new leaders of the party.

“The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, was part of the delegation.

“As at the time the ADC team came, the party was yet to submit the report of its National Executive Committee (NEC), which ratified the new leadership, to INEC.

“It was only on Thursday that ADC said it had forwarded the report, and there was public holiday on Friday.

“We have not got specimen signatures of the new National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, the National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and other key leaders of the party.

“The excuse they gave was that Senator Mark travelled abroad for medical treatment.

“More importantly, the former National Chairman of ADC, Ralph Nwosu, was still holding on to the party.

“After notifying INEC of leadership changes, he was still signing all correspondences.

“He has been approbating and reprobating on ADC. And we have to be circumspect in acting on ADC without a formal report of NEC meeting. We, therefore, retained him in our records as the national Chairman of the party.

“So, you can see that INEC has no problem with ADC at all. “Once the party complies fully with the requirements, INEC will issue an official statement.

“The meeting with ADC delegation was mutual and clearer.”

When contacted, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, said: “INEC Chairman has had a cordial session with ADC leaders on how to meet the requirements in line with the guidelines/rules.

“We are all on the same page. “

Mark, a former Senate President and retired Brigadier General, was named interim national chairman of ADC, and Aregbesola, a former governor of Osun State as national secretary on July 1 after opposition politicians including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of Labour Party in 2023 Mr. Peter Obi, former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi and others decided to use the party as a platform against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

All of them, with the exception of Obi, have formally dumped their former parties.

However, Atiku is yet to formally register as an ADC member.

Some members of ADC, including the party’s House of Representatives member from Yagba in Kogi State, Leke Abejide, and the party’s presidential candidate in 2023, Dumebi Kachikwu, have rejected what they call the take-over of the party by Mark and others.

Kachikwu branded it hostile and illegal, saying that the action of the new entrants “further cements the opinion most Nigerians hold that political parties in the country stand for nothing and will fall for anything.”

He added: “They claim to be fighting for the rights of ordinary Nigerians and say they are on a rescue mission.

“But what confuses Nigerians is that these men—made up of a former vice president, former governors, ministers, and political office holders—are the same people who have presided over the affairs of this nation for the past four decades.”

Nigeria, according to him, has nothing to show for their years in leadership “other than being seen as a nation divided by tribe and religion and thriving in mediocrity.”

“We are a nation lacking in the basics, whose majority are poor.

“Yet we are watching those who set our nation on fire now claim to be the fire brigade,” he said.
