30 terrorists neutralised in air, ground assaults in Borno

At least 30 terrorists have been killed in a military air and ground operation at Dar-El-Jamal village in the Bama Local Government Area of Borno State.

The operation, conducted on September 5, followed reports of heavy terrorist engagement against friendly forces, according to the spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, in a statement on Saturday, September 6.

Ejodame stated that the NAF swiftly acted on the situation report and deployed an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) and Air Interdiction (AI) mission to the area.

He said: “En route, the aircrew established contact with ground forces in Banki, who confirmed that reinforcements were already moving to support troops.

“On arrival at Dar Jamel, the aircrew visually identified friendly forces before ISR scans revealed terrorists fleeing northwards from the town towards nearby bushes. In a series of three precise and successive strikes, the fleeing terrorists were decisively engaged, resulting in the neutralisation of over 30 insurgents.

“Shortly afterwards, reinforcement troops arrived at the location, secured the area, and stabilised the situation.”

According to the NAF’s spokesman, the coordinated success highlighted the “seamless synergy between air and ground forces,” and underscored the effectiveness of joint efforts in counterterrorism operations.

“It also reinforces the Nigerian Armed Forces’ resolve to dismantle terrorist networks, protect vulnerable communities, and restore lasting peace to the North East and beyond,” Ejodame said.

Disquiet in Osun community as crown of monarch jailed in US goes missing

A new twist has been added to the conviction of Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba Joseph Oloyede, by a United States of America court over $4.2million COVID-19 fraud, following the alleged disappearance of an ancestral crown and beads, among other royal paraphernalia at the palace, amid moves to replace the embattled king, reports KUNLE AKINRINADE & TOBA ADEDEJI.

The disappearance of an ancient crown and royal beads from the palace of the Apetu of Ipetumodu is causing ripples in the ancient town, in the headquarters of Ife North Local Government of Osun State, barely two weeks after a U.S. District Judge, Christopher A. Boyko, sentenced Oba Joseph Oloyede to 56 months imprisonment over $4.2million COVID-19 fraud.

The disappearance of the ancient Aare crown and some royal beads has been linked to aides and loyalists of the monarch, who, according to sources, allegedly ordered the removal of the items from the palace.

“The ancient crown and royal beads have disappeared from his house, which doubles as a palace. He had demolished the ancient palace and moved all the paraphernalia of the stool to his home. But we learnt that a woman and some of his aides were given the task to evacuate the crown and beads. The disappearance of the items portends a grave dilemma for this town, whenever the need arises for enthronement of a new monarch to replace Oloyede,” a chieftain from one of the leading ruling houses said.

He said, “The crown is missing and the mastermind has no idea of what they are doing and the backlash on our town; they are looking for the fury of the deities of this great ancient community and it will be in their best interest to return the crown and royal bead before it’s too late.”

The Nation recalled that Oba Oloyede, who holds dual Nigerian and American citizenship, was arrested in May 2025 in the US, alongside one Pastor Edward Oluwasanmi, after which they were both jailed for fraud.

Oloyede’s conviction has stirred calls for his replacement among princes and ruling houses jostling for the throne.

When The Nation visited Ipetumodu during the week, the once-bustling community was palpably tense. Although economic life continues with no disruption, the atmosphere was heavy with disappointment and uncertainty in the community, noted for a rich royal heritage and traditional leadership.

Streets and markets were abuzz with commercial activities amid hushed conversations, as residents weighed the shame and embarrassment against their loyalty to the revered stool.

Controversy over enthronement process of Oba Oloyede

There are two ruling houses in Ipetumodu: Aribile and Fagbemokun, which comprise several royal families. After the demise of Apetu of Ipetumodu, Oba James Adedokun Adego (Akunradoye II), in 2017, intense lobbying commenced among the heirs to the throne, especially from the Aribile ruling house, which consists of five royal families, namely: Ile-Elewa, Ajiga, Kiajee, Arowoosun and, recently, they added Latimogun.

Subsequently, Oba Oloyede emerged from the Latimogun ruling house and ascended the throne on October 26, 2019. Speaking with The Nation, a traditionalist who is also an heir to the throne, Prince Olaboye Ayoola, opposed the process that led to the emergence of Oba Oloyede, saying: “No traditional rite was conducted, and an Igbo man who is a civil servant put the crown on his head contrary to tradition.”

Ayoola said, “The disgrace we got from our jailed monarch is an indication that God comes with his judgment, and our deities are angry. This is because the process of his accession to the throne was unprecedented in this town. My grandfather, Oba Samson Ayoola Oyebode, was an Oba of this town, and he reigned between 1947 to 1970. It was written as part of the history of his emergence that once a king dies, the princes from the two ruling houses will come together and start meetings. Subsequently, the Chairman of the Local Government Council will address a letter to the next ruling house to produce the king within 14 days.”

“Subsequently, all of us from the two ruling houses will start meetings. During the process, each of the families from the ruling house that should produce the next king will start consulting the Ifa oracle, after which we will present one candidate each.”

Expatiating further, Olaboye said, “There are four kingmakers in Ipetumodu. They will now consult the Ifa oracle, again, to choose from the candidates. But during the last contest for the throne, they never consulted the Ifa oracle; rather, they used money to judge who would be the king. In fact, the town was clamouring for a rich king.

“With this agitation, the Council Chairman increased the intention form fee from N25,000 to N500,000; to be paid to the local government, while N50,000 will be paid to the state government coffers.”

Ayoola held that the council chairman equally stated that any contestant must buy a minimum of one plot of land, worth millions of naira from the Osun State Housing Corporation (OSHC) and develop it before he can be considered for the throne.

“We learnt that they had appointed Oba Joseph Oloyede without anybody’s knowledge. It was done secretly. We later heard that they had appointed the new Oba through the sporadic shooting of a gun, which was used to accompany the king to the palace; this is against tradition.

“We reported it to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who said we should consult the Ifa oracle, but that was not followed. However, the head of the kingmakers insisted that he is not consulting any Ifa. It is noteworthy that they used Ifa to establish Ipetumodu; the process must always be followed.”

“If they want to choose the king, they should not follow the Christian and Muslim ways but must be guided by pure tradition. Their refusal to use Ifa caused this. Oba Oloyede failed to observe all the traditional rites we use to crown Apetu in Boosa, no king crowns Apetu, it is the princes that unanimously put the crown called Sese Efun on the king before other crown. He should see the deities of the land. The man who is traditionally saddled with the responsibility of crowning the king was angry for not following tradition, hence he did not participate.

“On that day, the secretary to the Apetu, who is a civil servant and an Igbo man, explained how they crowned Oba Oloyede. It was an Igbo man who put the crown on Apetu’s head.”

Also, another Prince from the Fagbemokun ruling house, Adewuyi Oyerinde, said four kings had ruled Ipetumodu since he was born, including Oba Oloyede, but none ever emerged like him.

“We are bothered, now that he is jailed and all the traditional crowns, beads and other royal paraphernalia have been carted away. Initially, they were in the custody of Oba Oloyede, who had demolished the palace when he emerged. He relocated all the ancient royal instruments to his personal house. But we can’t find them now. Government should help us.”

We followed due process to install Oba Oloyede, can’t commence process for enthroning new king—Kingmakers

Meanwhile, the kingmakers and the traditional chiefs of the town, led by the Asalu, Chief Sunday Afolabi Adedeji, defended the process of ascension of Oba Joseph, saying: “We never acted contrary to the tradition of Ipetumodu.”

They expressed sadness over the current impasse in the town by the jailing of their king, describing it as unfortunate.

Chief Adedeji stressed that Oba Oloyede was selected in accordance with the Chief’s Law of Osun State. The consenting authority, who is the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi and other stakeholders were all carried along.

When asked about a possible process to select a new king, he noted that the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy,  Dosu Babatunde, had insisted that the government would get a Certified True Copy of the judgment before acting.

He said, “Anybody who says we should not wait for a government directive is wicked and intends to cause a crisis in our noble town.”

He explained further that, “My people are peace-loving and we will abide by the law. You have seen for yourselves that there’s nothing like disturbance anywhere in our town. We have been administering the town, we, the Council of Chiefs. The meetings are held, God is with us, and there’s no problem and we don’t envisage any crisis. Our prayer is that God should counsel and turn the heart of anybody who wants to start trouble in Ipetumodu and fan the embers of disunity among the people.”

Meanwhile, the leader of the Aribile Ruling House, Prince Taiwo Ayoola, said the ruling house has resolved that Oba Oloyede should be replaced because the former king from their ruling house did not die but was jailed.

He equally passed a vote of no confidence in the kingmakers, urging the government to appoint warrant chiefs to carry out the selection of a new king for the town.

He said: “At our meeting in Aribile Ruling house, which was attended by elders including Prince Mathias Oyetade(chairman), Prince Oyeyemi Oyewole, Prince Kola Oyewo, Prince Bisi Oyewo and  Prince Segun Aderibigbe amongst others, we resolved and passed a vote of no confidence in all the Kingmakers for failure to comply with our tradition during the selection of Oba Oloyede, and they should be disbanded forthwith.

He urged the government to probe the emergence of Oba Oloyede before commencing the process to select a new king.

Prince Ayoola implored Governor Ademola Adeleke to appoint the head of all princes as regent, pending the time that a new king will emerge to douse the tension in the community.

“We plead with the government to allow us to replace Oloyede from among his co-contenders when he emerged as the king, to ensure fairness. This will spare us time and energy. Those from the Fagbemokun ruling house running around should be told that it is not their time yet, as Oloyede is not dead.”

2027: Jonathan in dilemma, associates split

    • Why former president embarked on exploratory visits

    • Associate: It costs him nothing to say no if he’s not interested

    • Micro-zoning of presidential ticket poses new landmine in PDP

Indications from the political camp of former President Goodluck Jonathan suggest that he is interested in joining the 2027 presidential race, contrary to earlier reports.

His supporters in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are already working around the clock to sell his candidature to stakeholders.

Sources in Wadata Plaza (PDP National Secretariat) confirmed that high-level consultations are ongoing to woo Jonathan back into active partisan politics. Some northern political elements’ preference for a president who will easily reach compromises, in addition to facilitating the emergence of one of them as a presidential candidate in 2031, is a major motivation for preferring GEJ.

Observers stated yesterday that recent comments by Jonathan, his cousin, Robert Azibaola, and his special adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, are clear indicators of the former president’s ambitions.

Besides, The Nation gathered that Jonathan has been reaching out to influential Nigerians about his plan.

One of those already visited by him is former President Ibrahim Babangida, sources said.

A political ally of the former president said yesterday that Jonathan’s statement on the alleged betrayal that cost him re-election in 2015 was strategic to draw public sympathy.

He said if Jonathan was not interested in the race, it would cost him nothing to make a categorical statement to that effect.

“You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening,” Jonathan said yesterday.

He spoke during the 70th birthday party of his former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, in Benin, the Edo State capital.

“I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayers, especially during the 2015 elections (which he lost to the late President Muhammadu Buhari), and Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf.

“He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank. Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank. They will tell you something, the next one hour they are saying another.”

The Jonathan ally who did not want to be named likened the Benin statement to the  September 2010 speech by Jonathan, when he was seeking the presidential ticket of the PDP ahead of the 2011 election.

He said on that occasion: “I was not born rich, and in my youth, I never imagined that I would be where I am today, but not once did I even give up. Not once did I imagine that a child from Otueke, a small village in the Niger Delta, would one day rise to the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“In my early days in school, I had no shoes, no school bags. I carried my books in my hands but never despaired; no car to take me to school, but I never despaired.

“There were days I had only one meal but I never despaired. I walked miles and crossed rivers to school every day but I never despaired. Didn’t have power, didn’t have generators, studied with lanterns but I never despaired. In spite of these, I finished secondary school, attended the University of Port Harcourt, and now hold a doctorate degree.”

Azibaola and Eze have also been quick in shooting down any suggestion in the media that he would not be contesting in 2027.

Responding to a report last week on why Jonathan might not contest, Azibaola dismissed the story as completely false.

The former President, according to him, “never said he would not contest in 2027. The so-called aide quoted in the publication does not exist.”

He added that while Jonathan has not officially confirmed his intention to run, he has also not ruled himself out.

Earlier this week, he told the Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, and human-rights activist, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, both of whom had commented on Jonathan’s eligibility in 2027, that their opinion was not needed.

His words: “Dear Festus Keyamo (SAN), Chidi Odinkalu (Prof), I greet both of you. For the record, three of us are lawyers. We were all pro-democracy activists in the ’90s, and I was a better activist than both of you combined.

“Rule No. 1: Do not offer legal advice where none is solicited. GEJ (PDP) has numerous, more cerebral, more experienced SANs at his disposal who give him sound, unblemished professional legal advice.

“Please note: GEJ is 100% constitutionally and legally qualified to contest, if he chooses to. If he decides not to yield to the overwhelming calls to run, it will not be because he is unqualified.

“Your unsolicited legal view is not of any concern to him and will never be. Don’t waste your precious time dwelling on this. Or should I schedule a meeting so you can be properly educated on the subsisting court judgments on the matter, one of which your party, APC, was a party to?

“This is not a confirmation that GEJ is running, though.”

On his part, Eze, responding to an article entitled “Jonathan, Don’t Just Run… Please Flee!” by newspaper columnist Chidi Amuta, reeled out Jonathan’s achievements while in office.

He dismissed Amuta’s opinion as an exercise in intellectual revisionism.

Eze said of his boss: “Since leaving office, Dr. Jonathan has become one of Africa’s most respected elder statesmen. He has led multiple peaceful electoral missions across Africa, been recognised internationally for his role in advancing democratic norms, won the prestigious Sunhak 2025 Peace Prize and remains a credible voice on governance across the continent.

“That is not the profile of a ‘problem child’ as Amuta insensitively put it, but that of a model leader who chose country over power, peace over pride.

“Dr. Chidi Amuta’s article is not a critique; it is a careless misrepresentation of a leader whose record continues to speak for itself. Nigerians and history are more discerning than Amuta gives them credit for.”

Party sources said there is no guarantee of an easy ride for him in getting the PDP presidential ticket despite the current moves by his supporters in the party.

One source said the decision of the party to micro-zone the presidential ticket has its own challenges, as the three geopolitical zones in the south will have to agree on how to go about it first.

PDP National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, Chairman of PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara and members of the Douye Diri PDP National Zoning Committee, that was set up on Thursday, August 14, affirmed zoning as a major strategy, such that while the party’s November 15-16 national convention will produce a national chairman from the North, comprising North West, North East and North Central, the South, inclusive of South West, South East and South South will produce the party’s 2027 presidential candidate.

The  North will conduct its own micro-zoning to determine the specific state to produce the national chairmanship candidate.

A source said: “Micro-zoning is about survival, not sentiment; if we get it wrong, we hand APC the election before the campaign even starts.”

Another party source said Jonathan’s political base in the Southsouth is no longer guaranteed for him in view of political developments in the zone over the last few years.

“Edo, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Cross River used to be Jonathan’s and PDP’s exclusive property. But now, how many of them are for PDP?”, the source said.

He wondered what magic Jonathan could perform now in any of the states, with the possible exception of his home state, Bayelsa.

He said most of his supporters in Cross River, like former governor Liyel Imoke, have left for the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC), while the PDP is no longer the same in Rivers.

The South East, another of his strongholds, is unlikely to vote for him, in the event that Mr. Peter Obi is also on the ballot, said the source.

Obi’s dilemma is similar to Jonathan’s, as the Labour Party, on which platform the former Anambra State governor contested the 2023 presidential election, is currently in disarray, while Obi is still unsure of joining ADC.

    • Administrator’s aide dismisses alleged plot to extend tenure

With 13 days left to the expiration of the six-month state of emergency imposed on Rivers State, the Administrator, Ibok-Ete Ibas, is rounding off his assignment and preparing for exit.

Waiting to resume are suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu and members of the state House of Assembly.

There had been fears in the state that Ibas, a retired Vice Admiral, might be pushing for an extension of the state of emergency.

But sources at Government House Port Harcourt said there was nothing of the sort.

Ibas himself said last weekend that with the just concluded local government election, there was a sign that the state was ready for the resumption of full democratic rule as obtains in the rest of the country.

“Certainly, all indigenes of Rivers State want and deserve grassroots leadership they can call their own. That is what this process represents,” Ibas said of the LG polls.

He added: “For me, facilitating this foundational tier of democracy is a core objective of my mandate: to put the state back on its stable, democratic path and to empower its people.”

He swore in all the elected chairmen soon after the announcement of the results.

His view was echoed by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who said that the State was only a step from the lifting of the emergency rule, following the successful conduct of the local government elections.

Wike, the immediate past governor of the state, said that with the emergency rule due to expire on September 18, the suspended governor, deputy governor and state lawmakers “will come back to their jobs.”

On Wednesday, Ibas visited President Bola Tinubu in Abuja in what sources suggested was part of consultations on the next steps for the state.

A source at the Government House Port Harcourt told The Nation that “there is nothing to suggest any extension at all.”

Residents of the state are convinced that certain steps being taken by the administrator, including the reconstruction of the State House of Assembly complex, are positive for the return of the suspended executive and legislative functionaries.

The complex was demolished by Fubara in the heat of his stand-off with the legislators.

During one of his visits to the site, Ibas described the project as strategic and appealed to the contractor to pursue its completion with urgency.

He said: “This project is of strategic importance and we must treat it as such. The people of Rivers State expect results.

“Any further delays will be unacceptable and all hands must be on deck to meet the agreed timeline”.

Ibas also recently inaugurated nine key boards in the state ahead of the conclusion of the emergency rule on September 18.

The boards inaugurated by the sole administrator were the Rivers State Universal Basic Education Board (RSUBEB), Rivers State Senior Secondary Schools Board (RSSSSB), Rivers State Internal Revenue Service Board (RSIRSB), Rivers State Microfinance Agency (RSMA), Rivers State, Contributory Health Protection Programme Board, Rivers State University Teaching Hospital Board and Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA).

Members of the Rivers Women Unite for SIM said they could not wait for the emergency rule to be over.

The women at their monthly prayer session in Port Harcourt prayed for mercy and peace to continue to prevail in the state, expressing faith in God to ensure the lifting of the emergency rule and restoration of the governor and the Assembly members.

They lamented that the people had endured the six months emergency rule, insisting that normalcy should be restored in the state.

The state chapter of the APC led by Chief Tony Okocha expressed enthusiasm that Fubara would return at the expiration of emergency rule on September 18, pledging that members of the APC would work with him.

He said: “On the 18th of September, the executive governor returns. It couldn’t have been a prophecy. Six months suspension will elapse on the 18th of September and so necessarily, even elementarily, there would be no vacuum.

“So it is clear that the Governor, who was suspended for reasons that you and I know, will return to office.

“We are going to co-operate with the Governor when he returns to office. But that co-operation will not take away our rights to criticise the Governor when he does the wrong thing.”

A chieftain of the PDP, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke, does not share the opinion of those who claim Fubara will return as a powerless governor.

He said: “Those opinions are simplistic and don’t add up. He is going to return to his seat as the governor of Rivers and governor who has constitutional roles to play.

“Beyond the local government elections, it is not cast in stone that the governor after a while cannot make his own appointments.

“He is not under any obligation to run from now till the end with the appointments others have made. These are mere speculations.

“As a Rivers person, I am looking forward to the return of a governor who will perform executive functions for Rivers people and whose responsibility to the people cannot be abridged by anyone.

“Many people are tired of the emergency rule and the turnout was evidence of a support for the governor. But peace has returned.

“Brothers have agreed to work together and the interest of Rivers surpasses that of individuals. And I think we will be able to find our foot in the interest of Rivers and our founding fathers going forward.”

The state of emergency was declared on March 18 by President Tinubu, following months of a running battle that pitted Fubara and his supporters against Wike and his supporters, including the majority of the state’s lawmakers.

Three months into the emergency rule, Tinubu convened a high-level peace meeting at the State House in Abuja, bringing together key actors in the conflict for a rare face-to-face dialogue.

At the closed-door meeting were Fubara, Wike, suspended Rivers Speaker Martins Amaewhule, and several other lawmakers embroiled in the dispute.

Wike confirmed later that the parties to the Rivers State dispute had settled their differences and machinery put in motion for the restoration of all suspended democratic activities and institutions.

Nigerian politics full of liars, betrayers, says Jonathan

It’s difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described Nigerian politics as full of betrayers and liars.

“You find it difficult to see somebody who will say the same thing in the morning and in the evening,” Jonathan said yesterday.

He spoke during the 70th birthday party of his former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Ogiadomhe, in Benin, the Edo State capital.

But he singled out Ogiadomhe, a former Edo State deputy governor, as reliable and a dependable ally, saying: “I’ve witnessed a lot of betrayers, especially my 2015 elections (which he lost to the late President Muhammadu Buhari), and Mike is somebody who would take a bullet on my behalf.

“He is somebody that you can take his word to the bank. Most other politicians, you cannot take their words to the bank. They will tell you something, the next one hour they are saying another”.

Many PDP chieftains have been calling on the former President to run in 2027.

Some of those inviting him to join the race for the PDP ticket include former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Ghana, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

But Jonathan has not responded to the call despite his wife, Dr. Patience Jonathan, in May, declaring that her husband would support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who she claimed supported Jonathan to win the 2011 election.

She promised to campaign in 2027 with First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

While the controversy continues, some close allies of the former President have insisted that Jonathan will not throw his hat into the ring.

“He enjoys being a statesman that he has become since 2015 after he lost the election. He would not like to tarnish his global image. At the same time, he does not want to be the one that would allow himself to be used to destroy Southern solidarity,” one of his strong allies said.

But his cousin, Robert Azibaola, has insisted that Jonathan will run.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, was represented by Deputy Governor, Dennis Idahosa.

Also at the party were former Governor Lucky Igbinedion, who Ogiadomhe served as deputy, another former Governor, Osarhiemen Osunbor, and deputy governors of the state like Rev. Peter Obadan, Pius Odubu and Marvelous Omobayo, and former Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dakwambo.

Olawepo-Hashim support groups: resurrecting PDP zoning regressive

    • ‘I will contest for president’

Support groups backing the presidential ambition of Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim in 2027 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reiterated their opposition to zoning of the ticket.

According to them, “resurrecting zoning in the current political context is simply regressive.”

The groups, which cut across the country,  called on PDP leaders and other critical stakeholders to jettison zoning, describing it as unpopular among members and detrimental to party unity.

They maintained that the PDP can only remain strong and formidable enough to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if it prioritises inclusivity, fairness and merit over sectional arrangements.

Olawepo-Hashim, who has rejected zoning, reaffirmed his presidential ambition ahead of 2027.

He said in a statement that “zoning is unlawful,” adding: “I’ll contest for the presidency.”

Olawepo-Hashim dismissed the decision of the PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) on zoning as “illegal, unpopular and driven by selfish interests.”

He said: “That purported NEC decision was organised by a few people for selfish reasons. It is illegal and unpopular, as you can see from the deluge of protests from party members across the country.”

Olawepo-Hashim said the Electoral Act 2022 does not empower political parties to impose conditions such as zoning on aspirants beyond what is expressly provided in the Nigerian Constitution.

He noted that even the ruling APC avoided being trapped by zoning controversy, urging the PDP to correct what he described as “a grave error.”

The PDP zoning decision has continued to attract protests and criticisms from both Northern and Southern members of the party.

In Jos on Wednesday, thousands of supporters of Dr. Hashim stormed the PDP Secretariat demanding an open contest without exclusion.

The North Central Renaissance Movement, led by Professor Nghargbu K’tso, condemned the NEC decision as unjust to the North and, in particular, the North Central zone, which has never produced either a President or Vice President since Nigeria’s return to democracy.

One of the protesters argued that zoning is no longer defensible, pointing out that by 2027 the South would have produced presidents for 18 years while the North only 10.

“If before there was marginalisation of the South, no one can say so again by 2027. The South would have produced presidents for 18 years and the North for just 10. So who is marginalising who?” he asked.

In Kano, the Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Vanguard, Hon. Aminu Bala Wudilawa, told Freedom Radio that political trends in the North favour competence and capacity over sectional arrangements.

He alleged that only a few politicians eyeing the vice presidential slot were pushing for zoning to the South.

Olawepo-Hashim has consistently maintained that only a president chosen on the basis of competence and patriotism can fix Nigeria’s challenges.

He said the historical precedent of the PDP supports an open presidential contest.

Olawepo-Hashim added: “Even in 1999, when there was strong sentiment for accommodating the South-West due to the annulment of June 12, candidates from the North such as Alhaji Abubakar Rimi were not barred from contesting. “The same happened in 2002, when President Olusegun Obasanjo, then a sitting president, faced aspirants from the North like Chief Barnabas Gemade and Alhaji Abubakar Rimi.”

Hashim also cited Nigeria’s voting history as evidence that zoning is unnecessary.

“On June 12, 1993, the great people of Kano set ethnicity aside and voted for Chief M.K.O. Abiola against Alhaji Bashir Tofa, their kinsman. More recently, in the 2023 elections, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won in Northern Nigeria against Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, a Northern candidate, yet lost his home state Lagos to a candidate from another zone. This shows Nigerians are capable of making political decisions without bowing to ethnic or sectional instincts.”

Similar reactions have continued to pour in from sister groups, individuals and organisations within and outside Nigeria, warning the PDP of looming consequences that, they alleged, may jeopardise its chances of reclaiming power in 2027.

Ahead of the termination of the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday met with the Administrator of  the state, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), at the State House, Abuja.

The emergency rule will terminate on September 18 and suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara is expected back in  office.

There was no statement from the Presidency on what transpired at the meeting.

But  sources suggested they were part of consultations on the next steps for the state.

The President, who is on vacation may not return to the country before the expiration of the emergency rule.

President Tinubu,  in a nationwide broadcast  suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, Mrs Ngozi Odu, and all members of the  House of Assembly for six months.

He invoked Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution to justify the measure, citing the need to safeguard peace and prevent a collapse of governance in the state.

Following the proclamation, Vice Admiral Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, was appointed as Administrator .

His mandate was to restore order, stabilise governance, and ensure continuity in public administration during the emergency period.

Tinubu on 10-day working vacation in Europe

President Tinubu yesterday departed Abuja to commence a 10-day working vacation in Europe, the State House announced.

A statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President will spend the period between France and the United Kingdom before returning to the country.

The trip forms part of his 2025 annual leave.

The departure comes on the back of a busy schedule for the Nigerian leader, marked by key economic reforms, new policy directives, and diplomatic outreach.

This week, Tinubu highlighted unprecedented growth in non-oil revenues that has powered Nigeria’s strongest fiscal performance in recent history.

Government figures for January–August 2025 show collections hitting N20.59 trillion, a 40.5% increase over the same period last year, underscoring the impact of reforms aimed at widening the tax net and digitising compliance.

On Wednesday, the President also directed the implementation of mandatory health insurance across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, insisting that while government workers must be covered under the National Health Insurance Authority, businesses should not be unduly constrained as the Act is enforced.

Beyond domestic policy, Tinubu has been active on the international stage.

In August, his state visit to Brazil delivered agreements in aviation, trade, and science, as well as discussions to facilitate the return of Petrobras, the South American oil giant, to Nigeria’s energy sector.

The visit also paved the way for the launch of direct Lagos–São Paulo flights by Air Peace.

Before the State Visit to Brazil, he was in Yokohama, Japan, to participate in the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), another global collaboration focused outing.

Earlier in late June and early July, the President toured Saint Lucia and Brazil in a diplomatic push to deepen South–South cooperation, while also using global platforms to position Nigeria as a credible and respected partner.

The Financial Times recently described his reform drive as “shock therapy” designed to stabilise the economy and restore confidence among investors.

In the same vein, international agencies have noted growing global respect for Nigeria’s economic direction.

Tinubu’s latest trip, although designated as a vacation, is expected to combine rest with working engagements in Europe, continuing a pattern of using foreign visits to consolidate domestic reforms and attract international support.
