BREAKING: FG withdraws criminal complaints against KWAM1, Emmanson

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo has withdrawn criminal charges against musician KWAM I and female passenger Ms. Comfort Emmanson, citing wide  consultations with critical industry stakeholders.

Keyamo said recent events in the industry concerning unruly behaviour of certain individuals are unfortunate, regrettably, the minister declared that valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocols.

Keyamo said the lessons have been well highlighted for the travelling public.

He said :” If nothing at all, the episodes have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation space.

“As highlighted in my previous statements on the last two incidents, clear wrongs were committed by both the offending passengers and staff of the airlines involved from all the evidence available to us and those available to the public.

“It is clear that all the actors involved cannot continue to highlight the injury or injustice done to them without acknowledging their own equal culpability.

“Therefore, after reviewing the entire incidents, including appeals made by well-meaning individuals and remorse shown by the actors.

“Therefore, after reviewing the entire incidents, the following decisions have been reached: including withdrawal of complaint against

Ms. Comfort Emmanson, after conferring  with Ibom Airline.

” When the police took her Statement in presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct.

” Subsequent to the withdrawal of the complaint by the Complainant, the CP of Airport Command and the Police Prosecutor will immediately take the remaining steps to facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within this week.

” I have also conferred with the leadership of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and have appealed to them to lift the life-time flying ban imposed on her, to which they agreed. The details of the resolution will be made public by the AON subsequently.”

On the matter of KWAM 1, the Minister said : ” The  NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.

” Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police.

“In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of VALUEJET, the NCAA is to restore their licenses after the same period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal. The details will be announced by the NCAA.

” I have directed all relevant Aviation agencies in collaboration with other complementary agencies outside aviation to IMMEDIATELY begin a retreat NEXT WEEK to properly retrain and prepare our Aviation security personnel on how to deal with errant and disruptive passengers and how to deescalate potentially explosive situations. The retreat will be fully covered by the Press with the opportunity to ask all the relevant questions.

“The Airlines will also have their own session when the conduct and attitude of their staff towards members of the travelling public will be in full focus.

” These above decisions were taken by Government and the airline operators purely on COMPASSIONATE grounds as Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws are involved.

“We are also sending a CLEAR MESSAGE that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies. “

Amaechi: how Fayemi and I began opposition coalition

    • ‘We started in Nasiru Danu’s house’
    • These claims lack basis, says ex-Ekiti  governor

Former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has explained how he and ex-Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, collaborated in galvanising the coalition of opposition and eventually adopting the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Amaechi said both of them decided to expand the opposition coalition to accommodate more people after discussing the idea.

The former governor of Rivers State spoke on X Spaces titled: ‘Weekend Politics’ last weekend.

The coalition currently has opposition politicians like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal.

Others include former Senate President David Mark, former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, and former Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi, among others.

Many Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members have defected to the ADC.

Amaechi, in the viral audio, said: “ADC has overgrown those that started it.

“The coalition started between I and Fayemi in the house of Nasiru Danu, with Salihu Mohammed (Mustapha) and others.

“When we met, Salihu commenced the meeting. He wanted us to reconcile.

“After reconciliation, we agreed to broaden it so that it would involve more than just the two of us talking about starting a new party.

“Then, we got a consultant to help us look at the political structure and that of INEC to determine which party will be most suitable.

“Then, we expanded by getting Tambuwal (Senator Aminu) and others. By the time we did that, we had grown to about 20 to 30.

“We thereafter set up a committee to look for any of the available parties to join.

“The committee, after negotiating with several parties like AA (Action Alliance), Accord Party, ended up with ADC

“One of the requirements we set was that the party must give up its leadership so that everyone can join.

“I think ADC complied with our conditions. At this point, the coalition had grown too large with several other committees.

“There were other group meetings like the one in Kashim’s (Imam) house and others in Lagos.

“At the end of the day, we all thereafter agreed to come together in ADC.”

Fayemi: I remain APC member in Ekiti

After Amaechi’s comment went viral, Fayemi issued a statement to clear the air on his role and the speculation that he had left the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the ADC.

The statement by the Head of Fayemi Media Office, Abuja, Ahmad Sajoh, said: “In spite of efforts to verify this statement, which has gained traction on social and digital media, we have found no credible evidence to support it.

“No video of Hon. Amaechi making these claims or reports from reputable media organisations has been located.

“In an era where fabricated or distorted statements are often attributed to public figures for malicious purposes, we are cautious about engaging with potentially manufactured controversies designed to provoke or profit.

“It is possible that Hon. Amaechi did not make the statement or was misquoted.

“We unequivocally state that these claims lack any basis.

“Dr Fayemi remains a committed member and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State.”

According to the statement, Fayemi has, at various public forums in Ekiti and other places, consistently affirmed his dedication to the APC, working to address its challenges and advance its progressive ideals for Nigeria.

“Furthermore, Dr Fayemi has publicly endorsed His Excellency Biodun Oyebanji, Governor of Ekiti State, for re-election, clearly supporting his candidacy for the APC gubernatorial ticket. This underscores his loyalty to the APC.

“We urge the public to treat any news concerning Fayemi with caution, particularly when it originates solely from social media,” the statement added.

    • Ms. Emmanson remains in Kirikiri

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Olukayode Egbetokun yesterday ordered an investigation into the alleged obstruction of a Value Jet aircraft by Fuji Musician, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as KWAM 1).

The incident occurred on August 5 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Domestic Wing), Abuja.

The musician was prevented from boarding with a bottle of liquid, which he said was water.

His reaction allegedly obstructed the safe operation of the aircraft, in violation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023. He later apologised.

Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), said the probe directive followed the receipt of a petition from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

Adejobi said: “The Police have received an official petition from the NCAA over an alleged incident involving Mr. Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (popularly known as KWAM 1).

“In response, the IG, Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the matter, to unravel the circumstances which led to the ugly incident and ensure justice is served accordingly.

“The Force hereby assures the public of its commitment to upholding safety and security within Nigeria’s aviation sector, while assuring stakeholders in the sector of improved collaboration towards aviation security and strict compliance with aviation laws.”

The musician was out on the no-fly list by the NCAA in addition to letters advising the IG to investigate and the Attorney-General of the Federation to prosecute him.

The pilot and co-pilot of the Value Jet Airline also got their licenses suspended pending the conclusion of information.

Regarding another incident, the Senate and lawyers weighed in yesterday on the remand of Ibom Air passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, demanding a probe.

Ms. Emmanson was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on Monday after she was arraigned for the alleged assault of a cabin crew member.

She was arraigned at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court and remanded because she could not provide adequate sureties.

Sources said she was still remanded at the Correctional Centre yesterday due to a mix-up in her remand order.

It was learnt that the warrant was returned to the court for correction.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Dr Doyin Awolaye, confirmed that he would represent Ms. Emmanson.

“The family briefed me to represent her in all matters concerning the incident,” he told our reporter last night.

The Senate said it would investigate recent airline passenger incidents.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, in a statement, said the incidents have raised questions about operational standards, passenger rights, and the overall discipline within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

He said these developments demand immediate and coordinated action to protect the integrity of the sector and restore public confidence.

“In the exercise of its constitutional powers, the Committee will be engaging key regulatory bodies, operators, security agencies, and public interest groups to establish the facts, review existing procedures, and ensure that any necessary corrective measures are swiftly implemented.

“We will not allow procedural gaps or lapses in enforcement to undermine safety, professionalism, or public trust in our aviation system.

“The Senate Committee on Aviation will ensure accountability at all levels,” the Senator said.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) condemned the treatment meted out to Ms. Emmanson by Ibom Air staff, describing it as reckless and a violation of her right to dignity.

In a statement by its President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), the association slammed the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) for imposing a lifetime flight ban on the passenger without affording her a fair hearing.

The association called the decision heavy-handed, unlawful, and a grave affront to the rule of law and human dignity.

The NBA expressed outrage over reports and video evidence showing Ms. Emmanson being forcibly removed from the aircraft, stripped of her clothing in public, and filmed in a humiliating state — footage that was later circulated online.

“Such conduct is degrading, violates her right to dignity and privacy, and falls far short of the standards of civility and professionalism expected in the aviation sector,” the statement read.

The association also alleged that an Ibom Air hostess prevented Ms. Emmanson from disembarking the aircraft, a move it said could constitute false imprisonment and may have provoked the confrontation.

It insisted on an independent investigation before any disciplinary measures are taken.

“The power to suspend or restrict a passenger’s right to fly rests with the appropriate statutory regulator, not private associations or airline operators acting unilaterally,” NBA stated.

It further condemned the unedited filming and online distribution of the incident, calling it “an egregious invasion of privacy and a criminal act.”

It demanded the prosecution of those responsible for recording and circulating the footage without concealing Ms. Emmanson’s nudity.

As part of its demands, the NBA called on Ibom Air to immediately withdraw the lifetime ban, issue a public apology, and cooperate fully with relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Aviation, the NCAA, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in conducting a thorough inquiry.

The NBA pledged to offer Ms. Emmanson pro bono legal support to seek redress for the alleged violations.

“We will not remain silent while the fundamental rights of any Nigerian are trampled upon, whether by public authorities, private corporations, or individuals.

“Respect for human dignity and the rule of law must never be compromised, and in this matter, justice must prevail,” the statement concluded.

Also, the Lagos Branch of the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA) Nigeria, said it was outraged by the forced removal of Ms. Emmanson from an Ibom Air aircraft and the exposure of her body.

AWLS described the treatment as utterly unacceptable, degrading, and in clear violation of the dignity and fundamental human rights of the victim.

The Coordinator, Adesola Bello, said: “We strongly condemn not only the unprofessional and inhumane actions of the airline crew, but also the complicity of airport security officials whose duty is to protect and ensure the safety of passengers, not to participate in or permit acts of humiliation.”

AWLA said the incident underscored the urgent need for a thorough, independent investigation into the matter by relevant authorities, including FAAN, the NCAA, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

It called for the suspension and sanction of all crew members and security officials involved pending the outcome of the investigation.

“There must be adequate compensation and a public apology to the victim for the psychological trauma, physical exposure, and reputational harm suffered.

“The AWLA stands firmly against any form of violence, humiliation, or abuse targeted at women and girls.

“We will continue to advocate for the protection of women’s rights, demand accountability from institutions, and ensure that incidents like this are met with swift justice.

“We call on all stakeholders in the aviation industry to treat passengers with respect and humanity at all times, regardless of any disagreements or operational challenges.”

NCAA: why Kwam 1 was not charged

Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, Mike Achimugu, clarified the agency’s role in the two passenger incidents, saying the authority only intervenes where necessary and within its mandate.

Speaking on a television programme, Achimugu said in the case involving KWAM 1, the airline did not press charges.

“The airline [in the singer’s case] did not activate its right to take the passenger to court.

“As a result, the NCAA petitioned relevant authorities to prosecute the passenger, issuing an advisory to the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) to have the passenger banned,” Achimugu said.

In the Ibom Air case where a passenger assaulted the airline’s staff member, he explained that the carrier immediately exercised its right to take up the matter in court.

“Maybe because their staff had been assaulted, the airline immediately activated its right to take up the matter, and it went to court, so the NCAA is not involved in the case of the Ibom Air passenger,” he said.

He dismissed allegations of double standards.

    The charges against Emmanson

The police said Ms. Emmanson (Bob), on August 10, while onboard Ibom Aircraft No. 5N-BXP parked at Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), Ikeja, “did behave in an unruly and disorderly manner by shouting on top of your voice, abusing and assaulting the flight crew and refusing to disembark from the aircraft after landing.”

The alleged offence is contrary to Section 4 (1) (a) and punishable under Section 4(2) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) bye law 2005.

The charge said the accused “did assault one Juliana Edward by slapping and hitting her cheeks with your right hand and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 170 (1) (a) (b) and punishable under Section 172 of The Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015”.

Ms. Emmanson, in Count Three, allegedly assaulted one Jokpame Sagun “by hitting her face with your slippers.”

She was also accused of “willfully” damaging the aircraft divider cotton valued at $2,500 belonging to Ibom Air, an offence contrary to Section 350 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

    • Senator Wadada: nobody can defeat President in 2027

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo gave reasons yesterday why he is supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies and his re-election in 2027.

Also yesterday Senator Aliyu Wadada (SDP Nasarawa West) said nobody can unseat the President in 2027.

Soludo, who is seeking re-election November on the ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Wadada spoke at the Aso Villa after separate meetings with the President.

During the President’s visit to Anambra to inaugurate projects completed by the governor, both of them announce support for each other.

With the President praising the governor’s performance.

Yesterday, Soludo, wore a fez cap with President Tinubu’s broken chain cap logo emblazoned on it in addition to a photographs of both himself and the President – a signal of their working relationship – told reporters:  “I don’t have any apologies about it. President Tinubu is my friend. Has been my friend for 20 years now and counting. You don’t deny your friend and begin to quiver about who he is.

“I support him, and I’m impressed by the bold steps he has taken, particularly in the areas of the economy and structural reforms. I have said so several times — we’re taking the right steps, we only need to stay the course.”

The one-time Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) governor also advised political parties professing progressivism to work together in a broad coalition to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and drive economic and social development.

He recalled that    “progressives working together”  had been his consistent position since Tinubu’s visit to Anambra State, when billboards and other campaign materials promoting cooperation were displayed across the state.

On the state of insecurity in the state,  Soludo said his administration   deployed  a “holistic” strategy that combined kinetic force with non-kinetic interventions.’’

The governor stated that the enactment of the Anambra State Homeland Security Law in January marked a turning point in dismantling the foundations of criminality.

“All the deadly native doctors are on the run from the state because these are the guys giving false hope, deceiving our young ones and luring them into criminality,” he said.

According to him, job creation, youth empowerment and targeted social programmes are central to the non-kinetic approach adopted by his administration.

Soludo highlighted the training and empowerment of 5,000 youths in the past year, with another 8,700 set to receive financial support worth several billions of naira this month or next.

“We’re creating several thousand youth millionaires right away within the first three years. This is cascading all over the state. The youths are very much involved, and we’re also dealing with the issue of hardship, beyond the massive infrastructural transformation, beyond fixing our schools and health facilities,” he explained.

The governor assured that while young people were being given opportunities, law enforcement would decisively deal with those who broke the law.

Wadada said no opposition party or candidate had what it takes to unseat the  President in  2027.

The Nasarawa State-born federal lawmaker specifically referred to the  African Democratic Congress (ADC) ,   saying he sees no figure within its ranks capable of outperforming Tinubu’s administration.

He said: “Between now and 2031, anybody can say what he or she wishes to say, but the space is already taken, occupied by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

“Look at every one of the leaders … tell me, I haven’t seen any.”

He praised   Tinubu’s “transformative agenda” and pointed to infrastructural projects like the Sokoto–Badagry and Abuja–Kano roads as evidence of the President’s commitment to national development, especially in the North.

Wadada, chairman of Senate Committee on Public Account, challenged opposition leaders to present clear policy alternatives on critical issues such as fuel subsidy, foreign exchange management and infrastructure.

He said  even though he has  not defected to any party, he remains “All Progressives Congress (APC) in spirit.”

He said: “I could even say that I am APC, though I have not officially moved, but I am APC. SDP hasn’t offended me, but the happenings now may not warrant my continued stay. Dynamism of life makes it imperative for everything in life to be dynamic.”

The senator traced his political history through the Peoples Democratic Party( PDP), where he served as national financial secretary, to his early involvement in the APC before its official formation.

He noted that the PDP was “one of the ingredients put in the pot to cook APC.”

‘EFCC hits back at ADC, others over ‘unprovoked attack’

    • •Tambuwal released, passport seized

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday reiterated its commitment to a reinvigorated anti-graft without sparing any sacred cow.

The chairman, Ola Olukoyede, explained that the agency runs a non-partisan mandate, adding that it has been  circumspect and dispassionate in the exercise of the mandate.

He insisted that the law would take its course whether suspects belong to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or the opposition.

“If  I am not condemned for investigating both former and serving strong ruling party governors and ministers, I should not be condemned for also investigating opposition figures,” Olukoyede said via a statement by the EFCC Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale.

The EFCC boss said the investigation and trial of suspects are not time bound.

It was in reaction to the criticisms by the chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) against the interrogation of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over alleged suspicious withdrawal of N189 billion from the state government account when he was in office.

The former governor, who was detained in the  headquarters of the commission in Abuja on Monday, was released around 5pm yesterday on bail.

However, a source said Tambuwal’s passports were seized to restrict him to the country, pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

The ADC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary,  Bolaji Abdullahi, accused the Commission of reopening dormant cases against opposition leaders as a reaction to “emergent political affiliations.

The opposition party also alleged attempts to intimidate key opposition members by the Federal Government. .

Also, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, an ADC chieftain, and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi objected to the interrogation, saying that Tambuwal’s detention was a ploy to intimidate and weaken the opposition.

Olukoyede described the attack by the ADC as unprovoked and shocking, stressing that it underscored a blame game.

He said it will not submit itself to blackmail to discontinue ongoing investigations.

Olukoyede added: “The African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s unprovoked attack on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), concerning its handling of cases involving politically exposed persons from every divide, came as a rude shock and unwarranted blame game.

“Every objective and discerning watcher of events in the national political scene would admit that the commission has been circumspect and dispassionate in the exercise of its mandate.”

The commission’s chairman also faulted the ADC’s claim that its summons were politically motivated.

He said: “The ADC’s claims that “opposition coalition have received EFCC summons that are clearly politically motivated. These are not fresh cases arising from new evidence but new files opened in reaction to emergent political affiliations to intimidate key opposition figures”,  are clearly self-serving,  diversionary, narrow  and  idle.

“ The question is, what determines “fresh cases” and old cases? Every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated and there is no constraint of time and season in criminal investigations.

“Available records in our courts showed that several political figures of all divide are answering charges  of alleged economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

“It is also public knowledge that the EFCC is busy investigating some key figures of the ruling party  owing to allegations of corrupt practices.

“ Besides,  many serving state governors of various political colouration are on the investigative  radar of the commission.”

Olukoyede said its operation was without political colouration, stressing that it will not succumb to blackmail to make any disclosure on its ongoing investigations.

He added: “The commission will not be blackmailed into making full disclosures of its discreet investigations of any state or non-state actor,  no matter the provocation.

“The ADC was right to have admitted that “The EFCC does not belong to the APC.  It belongs to the Nigerian people. It is funded by taxpayers, not the ruling party.’’  Nothing can be farther from this truth.

“The ADC and other political groups should focus on their partisan activities and allow the Commission to carry out her mandate.  Nothing will make an innocent person answer any charge from the EFCC.

“The “opposition figures” the ADC is trying unsuccessfully to white-wash know in their hearts that they have issues that necessitated their invitations by the commission.”

Olukoyede said there is  no sacred cow in the anti-graft war.

He stressed: “The immunity against any investigation by the EFCC is accountability and probity.   Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption.

“The EFCC will continue to do its job and all well-meaning Nigerians are enjoined to ignore political statements meant to heat up the polity and divert attention from the pillage of the national treasury.”

    EFCC witch-

    hunting opposition,  says Atiku

Chiding the EFCC for detaining Tambuwal,  the former vice president described it as a strategy by the Tinubu administration to intimidate and weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.

He alleged in a statement posted on his official X account that Tambuwal’s detention was politically motivated.

He stated: “The only reason the @officialEFCC has detained the former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, @AWTambuwal, is because he is a member of the opposition Coalition. It is a continuation of the Tinubu-led administration’s agenda to harrass, intimidate, and decimate the opposition.”

    Obi: anti-graft agency harassing foes

Obi faulted Tambuwal’s detention, saying that EFCC is not transparent in its operations.

He said the detention has opened up an existing contradiction apparent in the fight against corruption in the country.

Obi stated on his X handle that corruption can only be tackled if leaders are sincere.

He added: “I look forward to the time when the anti corruption fight in this country will be under one law that applies to all, no matter who is involved, and not one targeting political opponents and perceived enemies of the incumbent government.”

…hails President’s bold reforms, outlines security successes

Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday declared that he has “no apologies” for his alliance with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, despite belonging to different political parties.

Speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, after a meeting with the President, Soludo said his support for Tinubu was rooted in shared progressive ideals and a personal friendship spanning over two decades.

It asked ADC to avoid the unwanted blame game.

The anti-graft agency said it will not submit itself to blackmail to disclose ongoing investigations.

It said the opposition figures the ADC was trying unsuccessfully to whitewash, knowing in their hearts that they had issues that necessitated their invitations.

The EFCC, which replied to the new opposition coalition in a statement in Abuja by its Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Dele Oyewale, said the investigation and trial of suspects are not time-bound.

The statement said, “The African Democratic Congress, ADC’s unprovoked attack on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), concerning its handling of cases involving politically exposed persons from every divide, came as a rude shock and unwarranted blame game.

“Every objective and discerning watcher of events in the national political scene would admit that the commission has been circumspect and dispassionate in the exercise of its mandate.”

The EFCC faulted the claims of the ADC that its summons were politically motivated.

It said, “The ADC’s claims that “Opposition Coalition have received EFCC summons that are clearly politically motivated. These are not fresh cases arising from new evidence but new files opened in reaction to emergent political affiliations to intimidate key opposition figures”,  are clearly self-serving,  diversionary, narrow and idle.

“The question is, what determines ‘fresh cases’ and old cases? Every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated, and there is no constraint of time or season in criminal investigations.

“Available records in our courts showed that several political figures of all divides are answering charges of alleged economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption.

“It is also public knowledge that the EFCC is busy investigating some key figures of the ruling party owing to allegations of corrupt practices.

“Besides, many serving state governors of various political colouration are on the investigative radar of the commission.

The EFCC said its operation was without political colouration.

It also said it will not succumb to blackmail to make any disclosure on its ongoing investigations.

It added: “The commission will not be blackmailed into making full disclosures of its discreet investigations of any state or non-state actor, no matter the provocation.

‘The ADC was right to have admitted that “The EFCC does not belong to the APC.  It belongs to the Nigerian people. It is funded by taxpayers, not the ruling party.”  Nothing can be farther from this truth.

“The ADC and other political groups should focus on their partisan activities and allow the Commission to carry out its mandate.  Nothing will make an innocent person answer any charge from the EFCC.

“The opposition figures’ the ADC is trying unsuccessfully to whitewash, know in their hearts that they have issues that necessitated their invitations by the commission.”

The EFCC said there is no sacred cow in the anti-graft war.

“The immunity against any investigation by the EFCC is accountability and probity.   Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption.

“The EFCC will continue to do its job and all well-meaning Nigerians are enjoined to ignore political statements meant to heat up the polity and divert attention from the pillage of the national treasury”, it said.

JUST IN: 16 escape as inmates launch attacks on Keffi custodial centre

Sixteen inmates of the Medium security custodial centre, Keffi, Nasarawa state, have escaped from the facility after launching attacks on personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) within the facility.

The Nation gathered that five of the personnel sustained varying degrees of injuries following the attacks.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Umar Abubakar, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abuja, saying the attacks occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

Abubakar said, “Some inmates breached the security of the facility and attacked personnel on duty to compromise the situation.”

He also explained, “In the course of containing the situation, five personnel of the Custodial Centre sustained varying degrees of injury, with two currently serious and receiving urgent medical attention at a government health facility”.

He, however, said seven of the fleeing inmates have been recaptured and are now in custody.

“The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has visited the facility and has ordered a thorough investigation into the escape.

“He said no staff will be spared if found culpable. Furthermore, he has directed an immediate search to recapture the fleeing inmates in collaboration with sister security agencies.

“Members of the public are hereby urged to remain calm, vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or sightings of fleeing inmates to the nearest security formation,” Abubakar, a Deputy Controller of Corrections, said.

Abubakar said preliminary investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape, reassuring the public of the Service’s unwavering commitment to public safety and the security of all custodial facilities nationwide.

EFCC detains Tambuwal over ‘suspicious’ withdrawal of N189b

    • Operatives begin interrogation of ex-governor •It’s witch-hunt, says ADC

‘Suspicious’ withdrawal of N189 billion from the Sokoto State Government account during his tenure has landed Senator Waziri Aminu Tambuwal in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) net.

The withdrawal was carried out incrementally for six years out of his eight-year tenure, according to EFCC sources.

The senator honoured the invitation of the anti-graft agency at about 11:30am in Abuja yesterday.

It was learnt that the interrogation commenced immediately, and he was slated to spend the night in custody.

The withdrawals were from three accounts: the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), the Government House Account and the Secretary to the State Government Account.

About five other suspects – cashiers and government officials, who have been identified by the agency – may testify against the ex-governor or stand trial with him.

But the African Democratic Congress (ADC) kicked against the move, saying EFCC should focus on corruption instead of “harassing” opposition figures.

The ex-governor, who contested on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential ticket in 2023 before controversially stepping down for the eventual candidate Atiku Abubakar, recently defected to the ADC.

A source in the EFCC said the withdrawals are in flagrant violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

“We have isolated all the allegations for Tambuwal. It is left to him to respond.”

The source said the accounts received a total cumulative inflow of N567,160,024,619.93, out of which N189,155,043,825.09 was illegally diverted.

An EFCC fact sheet states:  “The EFCC carried out financial profiling of the Sokoto State Government.

“This profiling was aimed at identifying the state government’s accounts that may have been exposed to diversion, misappropriation of public funds and money laundering by government officials.

“Analysis of the state government’s activities from 1st of January, 2015 to August 31st, 2021 uncovered unusual transactions in the following accounts: Accountant General Sokoto FAAC, Secretary to the State Government, Permanent Secretary, Government House.

“Specifically, the above accounts received a total cumulative inflow of N567,160,024,619.93, out of which N189,155,043,825.09 was withdrawn in favour of government officials, individuals (suspected to be cashiers), companies and other groups/agencies.

“In light of the findings, it is assessed with a high degree of confidence that the named individuals (suspected to be cashiers) and identified government officials are involved in the diversion of public funds, misappropriation of state government funds and money laundering activities.

“The following are suggested: Investigation should commence on other state government accounts to identify other accounts that are prone to unwholesome acts of state officials.

“Investigate the named individuals and identified government officials to know the extent of their involvement.

“Investigate FAAC account payouts to private companies; Nagarta Microfinance Bank and Bilya Micro System,” the document said.

The EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, declined comment.

ADC to EFCC: don’t intimidate opposition

ADC frowned at the interrogation, saying that EFCC indulged in selective investigations.

It said the Commission is behaving like a political hit squad for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

It warned that the dangerous trend could erode public trust in the institution and undermine the anti-corruption fight.

ADC Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi said in a statement that the EFCC’s recent pattern of re-opening closed cases, digging up files from years past, and targeting members of opposition parties suggests that it is not an anti-graft body, but a political enforcer.

The statement reads: “In recent days, several senior members of the opposition coalition have received EFCC summons that are clearly politically motivated.

“These are not fresh cases arising from new evidence but new files opened in reaction to emergent political affiliations to intimidate key opposition figures.

“The EFCC was created to be a fearless defender of the Nigerian people’s trust, applying the law evenly to all, friend or foe, ruling party or opposition.

“Today, that vision appears to have been compromised.

“The Commission now operates like a department of the APC, deployed to fight government critics and opposition figures, thereby achieving what the government cannot achieve through public debate.

“We have observed how investigations into ruling party allies quietly fade away while opposition figures are dragged before the court of public opinion with sometimes decade-old allegations that have been hastily revived and dressed up as fresh evidence.

“This is selective prosecution, and selective prosecution is the death of justice.

“It does appear that in today’s Nigeria, one’s guilt or innocence depends on one’s party membership, not evidence.

“For example, since a certain former governor defected to the APC with his state’s entire political machinery, the EFCC’s investigations into his administration have vanished from public view.

“Not a question has been asked. Not a document leaked. Not a single update.

“Yet the same EFCC still somehow finds means to reopen old cases against opposition leaders and pursue the stale allegations against them.”

“It does not augur well for the EFCC if people think that all you need to point the accusing hands of the Commission in your direction is to stand opposed to the ruling party, and all that it takes for protection is to align with the government.

“Unfortunately, this is the widely established perception in Nigeria today, which the commission by its recent actions, including the ongoing surreptitious harassment of opposition leaders, has given credence to.

“The ADC hereby calls on all Nigerians, civil society organisations, and the independent media to resist this dangerous slide into dictatorship and misuse of public institutions to achieve partisan objectives.

“The EFCC does not belong to the APC. It belongs to the Nigerian people.

“It is funded by taxpayers, not the ruling party.”
