Opposition tackles governor over deputy’s seven-month sick leave

    • Why we can’t act, by House of Assembly

Taraba State is boiling over the long absence of Deputy Governor Aminu Andullahi Alkali from the state.

Alkali had not been seen in the state since January.

He is believed to have taken ill and moved out of the state for treatment.

There were speculations that he is receiving treatment abroad.

The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the government of Governor Agbu Kefas to address the issue in public interest.

It also criticized the House of Assembly for keeping mute over the matter.

But spokesman of the House of Assembly Nelson Len, said that there was no communication from the governor asking it to declare the ailing deputy governor incapacitated.

He said: “The rumour is false and the narrative is baseless. There is nothing of such that has happened. There is nothing of such that is happening.

“They haven’t brought such a matter before us concerning the removal or replacement of the deputy governor.

“The process of removing a deputy governor is very clear. You don’t just remove a deputy governor because of his ill health. First of all, a medical team would be set up to investigate and be sure why that action needed to be taken.”

Taraba APC Publicity Secretary Aaron Artimas, demanded government’s explanation on the whereabouts of the ailing deputy governor.

If he is incapacitated and unable to perform his functions, he should be removed, Artimas said.

He also demanded a clarification on the media report that Kefas had forwarded the name of Hamman Adama Abdullahi, Deputy Speaker,  to the House of Assembly as replacement for Alkali.

Artimas said the deputy governor’s absence had created a vacuum, wondering why the governor is reluctant to invoke the 1999 Constitution as amended, following the long absence.

He said the constitutional provisions in respect of incapacitation of the governor or deputy governor should be strictly followed.

But the state government clarified that although the deputy governor is ill, he is not incapacitated, adding that he is responding to treatment.

Section 189 states as follows: “The Governor or Deputy Governor of a state shall cease to hold office if: by a resolution passed by two-thirds majority of all members of the executive council of the State, it is declared that the Governor or Deputy Governor is incapable of discharging the functions of his office.

Artimas said: “We have made our position clear more than five months ago. We issued a statement saying it is a violation of the constitution.

The government, through the Commissioner for Information, Zainab Jalingo, told a news conference that the deputy governor was away on sick leave and that he would be back.

The commissioner said: “She came up with a very bizarre reason that the constitution allows the deputy governor to stay for as long as he likes and there is nothing like that in the constitution.

“Tarabans are not interested in that because of the way people regard governance in the state. It is not about the party or position, it is about responsible governance. Everybody knows that when people are elected into office, they are expected to do their job. We know that everybody is susceptible to illness and we are concerned about him because as a party, we want justice to be done to the deputy governor himself.

“If he is not well, all the governor ought to have done was to give him proper attention. If he is not able to go ahead, he should be excused and paid all his entitlements and the process should be followed to appoint a new deputy governor.

“All these the government has failed to do and it only means that they are not responsible. So, the constitution does not say the governor should rule the state alone.

“It is not about the APC or positions; it is that the government does not respect the will of the people of Taraba. The governor is not responsible and they are not complying with the provisions of the constitution under which they were elected into government.”

The Publicity Secretary accused other political parties and the House of Assembly of maintaining sealed lips on the matter.

Artimas said: “The House of Assembly that should be a check on the executive arm of government has become a rubber stamp. In fact, the House of Assembly has become a branch of the executive arm of government.”

No complaint about absence, says governor’s aide

However, the Special Adviser to the governor on Politics, Professor Josiah Sabo Kente, explained that the deputy governor, who is recuperating in the hospital, never committed any offence to warrant his removal.

He said: “This issue is a very simple. It is very explicit in Section 89, Sub-section B on the procedures for the removal of a governor or the deputy governor. For the avoidance of doubt, it stipulates clearly that it is either the governor or the deputy governor is incapacitated or by death or impeachment.

“In this case, the deputy governor has not been removed from office. His ailment does not place him within the category of incapacitation. No medical team has been set up to ascertain if he is incapacitated or not. So, what is the essence of all the clamour?

“It is uncalled for since governance is still going on. The constitution does not stipulate the number of days within which such a person can be removed or replaced.

“Recently, the governor issued a statement that the deputy governor is recuperating from his ailment.  Has government activities stopped? No. Has the governor complained that his deputy’s absence has stalled government activities? No. So, what is the matter?”

Kente described the deputy governor as “a spare tyre to the governor”, adding, “In an event that the governor is functioning well, the deputy governor has little or nothing to contribute.

He added: “As a matter of fact, I personally spoke with him. It was a very coordinated conversation I had with him. Don’t forget all of us are human beings and we are susceptible to falling sick at any given time.

‘Governor has not appointed a new deputy’

The state government said no nomination had been made to replace the deputy governor.

The Commissioner of Information and Reorientation urged the people to disregard the report.

She stressed: “This claim is entirely false, misleading, wicked and should be disregarded by the public in its entirety.

“We wish to categorically state that there is no vacancy in the office of the Deputy Governor. The current Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, remains the duly elected Deputy Governor of Taraba State”.

  • 176 ‘illegal’ estates: What govt’s action has cost us, by developers

176 ‘illegal’ estates: What govt’s action has cost us, by developers

    • Residents, investors panic

Last week’s description of 176 estates as illegal by Lagos State government, has thrown residents into panic, created fears in investors as real estate developers are counting the cost of the action.

Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) in a letter to the state government expressed worries.

The association said: ‘’It comes as a rude shock to REDAN members when the Lagos State Government lists over 170 members as not having or suggesting that its members’ estates do not have the requisite documents to provide sustainable and safe housing for citizens of Lagos State.

‘’REDAN members, many of whom are long-standing, internationally verified and respected estate developers and professionals, have been negatively affected by the public notice, which suggests that all the over 170 estate developments in Lagos State listed have no proper documentation, leading the residents in these estates and investors to panic.

‘’REDAN members have been traumatised by this notice, which has not only caused some doubt in the minds of investors but has led to a significant decline in business for the real estate sector, which in turn leads to further losses of revenue for the state.”

The 176 estates listed by the state government are predominantly located in the Eti-Osa, Ajah, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe axis of the state.

The government said the estates were deemed illegal due to their failure to obtain layout approvals.  It gave the owners of the estates 21 days to regularise their documents or risk their closure.

According to the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Oluwole Sotire, the estates compromised the state’s sustainable development ethos and   T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda by operating without approved layout.

At the weekend, Commissioner for Physical Planning and  Urban Development Olumide Oluyinka defended the action, saying some of the estates have between 50 to 70 per cent approvals while others have none or are being developed on places designated for agricultural, industries and other purposes.

He said: ‘’In March 2024, we observed that a lot of developers have purchased land from Omoniles to develop estates, though the government zoned the lands for different purposes such as agriculture, recreation, residential, infrastructure, etc.

‘’In addition, we noted that diasporan Nigerians and those living here have invested money in the wrong land and as a responsible government, we needed to act fast to avoid our people losing their hard-earned money.

‘’Some developers just acquired land and started selling with no approval whatsoever from the government, while some have gotten only provincial approval of between 50 and 70 per cent  others are developing or selling land with no approval. If you do something wrong, then it is illegal as far as the government is concerned.”

Some of the developers and realtors,  who spoke with The Nation on the issue,  accused the state officials of making the processes for layout approvals cumbersome.

Apart from alleging that the officials were careless and unprofessional in compiling the list, the developers and realtors said they (officials) had unwittingly told the public that the government sells and allocates land illegally.

One of them called for the withdrawal of the word ‘’illegal’’ by the ministry, while another said he might go to court if the government made good the threat to seal the estates.

A Director in Gracias Global Estate, Ikegun, Ibeju-Lekki, who did not want her name in print, said: “This particular issue is not a good one, especially because whoever was in charge didn’t do their homework well before putting the list out to the public.

‘’By using the word ‘ illegal’  for several estates, including the ones the government itself sold, is a total blunder.

‘’I  understand the importance of layout approval, but in my humble opinion, I feel that the government using the phrase ‘Illegal’ to classify several real estate companies because they want people to do layout approval is a bit harsh, especially at this period, when several real estate companies are being labelled scammers.

‘’In my humble opinion, the government should do their investigations well instead of tagging several real estate companies as illegal.’’

She added that some of their properties affected by the new coastal road alignment in Lekki were demolished by the Federal Ministry of Works for encroachment without the state government coming to their aid.

The director said:“ The coastal road diversion remains a mighty blow, because people who encroached on the Gazette alignment were left out. They displaced those of us who have been doing the right thing.

A realtor whose company also owns one of the listed estates, Gideon Mfon Abasi, said: “The publication is very sad and the issue must be addressed frontally.

‘’The officers involved ought to be sanctioned for bringing shame and disrepute to the Lagos State government. How on earth can you publish a document that is not correct and put it in the public domain?

‘’Is it not sad that the custodian of Information and Data can no longer be relied upon to give accurate information? The officers in charge are not even remorseful over their misdeeds. They  are carrying on business as usual”.

Mfon called on REDAN to bring to an end the acts of carelessness by state officials who are doing more harm than good to the system.

‘’Enough is enough, and it is time we demand professionalism and better service from these government officials,’’ he added.

Omoniyi Eleyinmi, a faculty officer at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, has regained his freedom nearly a week after being abducted.

Eleyinmi, who works in the Department of Education, was released by his captors on Sunday, a development confirmed by a university colleague who thanked God for his safe return.

A family source revealed that Eleyinmi’s release followed the payment of a substantial ransom, and he was freed near a boundary town in Ondo State.

“My brother, a ransom was raised and paid to the kidnappers before they could release him to us,” the source revealed.

When contacted, the state police spokesman, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said he could not immediately confirm the release but promised to provide an update.

Ayanlade’s reaction was being awaited as at the time of filing this report.

The police have consistently maintained opposition to ransom payments in kidnap cases.

Eleyinmi was abducted last Monday while returning to his Supare-Akoko residence from work.

Sources said the kidnappers initially demanded N100 million from the family but later reduced it to N7 million after negotiations.

  • 2027: ADC struggles for presence in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu, Delta, others

2027: ADC struggles for presence in Lagos, Kaduna, Enugu, Delta, others

    • State leaders await directives from Abuja

The major challenges to the quest by the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) for power in 2027 are beginning to manifest, five weeks after many opposition politicians formally adopted it as the vehicle for their aspiration.

The battle for the party’s leadership, which broke out as soon as former Senate President David Mark was named the interim national chairman and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as national secretary, has continued unabated.

Some party functionaries in the old dispensation are refusing to acknowledge any change in leadership, with some even going to court to challenge what they call illegal takeover.

Some others, including the party’s presidential candidate in 2023 Dumebi Kachikwu, are threatening more litigation.

Chairmen of the party in Borno, Benue and Nasarawa states are resisting the new leadership in Abuja.

Investigation by The Nation across the states revealed that despite the fanfare that attended the July 1, 2025 adoption of ADC by the opposition, its presence in many states appears too feeble for a party that hopes to displace the ruling one.

It was gathered that the new NEC of the party is yet to settle down and understand the needs and challenges of the state chapters.

On their part, the state chapters, which are in tune with the new leaders in Abuja, are awaiting directives on how to get the party going at the grassroots.

In Lagos, Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Bayelsa, Delta, Borno, Edo, Sokoto, Enugu, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi and Kebbi states, among others, the ADC looks more like a fringe party.

Although the George Hashiru-led executive committee in Lagos State remains in office, no notable politician has so far switched allegiance.

The state remains a stronghold of the APC, which won the July 12 local government elections overwhelmingly.

In neighboring Ogun State, the only time ADC made waves was 2019 when Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka contested that year’s governorship election against the man who later won, Prince Dapo Abiodun of APC.

ADC has since slipped into obscurity following Isiaka’s defection to the APC.

He is currently the member of the House of Representatives for Imeko/Afon.

Otunba Femi Soluade, son of the Second Republic Deputy Governor of Ogun state, is the current Chairman of ADC in the state.

Notable ADC members in Ekiti and their profiles

In Ekiti State, the only recent notable additions to the party are Prof. Kolapo Olusola-Eleka, Dr. Sikiru Lawal, Dare Abejide, Gboyega Aribisogan and Chief Segun Akinwunmi

Olusola-Eleka was deputy governor under Governor Ayo Fayose between 2014 and 2018, and was PDP’s governorship candidate in 2018. He lost to ex-governor Kayode Fayemi with a narrow margin.

Dr. Lawal was the Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2018 governorship poll. He defected from the PDP to LP on account of disagreement with Fayose.

Abejide was Secretary to the Ekiti State Government under Segun Oni and was the candidate of the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) in the 2018 governorship poll while Aribisogan defected from the PDP to APC in 2018 following a feud with Fayose.

He had also served as speaker of the Sixth Assembly, but his tenure lasted only six days following his impeachment.

Akinwumi was a chieftain of the PDP until his defection to ADC.

The evolving ADC structure in Osun State is being built around former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who is the current Interim National Secretary of the party.

    Aregbesola was in the APC.

With him to drive ADC in the state are ex-Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Najeem Salam; former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Moshood Adeoti; and Elder Adelowo Adebiyi,  a former state chairman of APC .Observers said the party stands a little chance in the state given the entrenchment of the APC and the PDP at all levels.

Governor Ademola Adeleke and the state chapter of the PDP recently pledged their support for the re-election of President Tinubu in 2007.

    South East

The party is practically non- existent in Enugu State; the only visible and outspoken member being actor and lawyer, Kenneth Okonkwo.

Okonkwo campaigned vigorously for Peter Obi in 2023 but has since parted ways with him.

His face is a regular feature on television and social media.

Former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha is the face of ADC in Imo.

Ihedioha made a dramatic return to politics last month through the ADC.

He had announced his exit from active politics some months back.

He is a former governor of the state, whose election was nullified by the Supreme Court.

The party’s popularity  in Anambra will be put to test in the November 8 governorship election when its candidate, John Nwosu, will square up with Governor Charles Soludo.

Nwosu,’s running mate, Dr Ndubuisi Nwobu, was once Anambra State Chairman of Action Congress (AC) and later, chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Also in Anambra ADC  are Comrade Patrick Obianyo, a former chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state; Ben-Chuks Nwosu, a two-term member of the state House of Assembly.

Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, the former National Chairman of the party, who handed over its affairs to Senator Mark, is from Anambra State as is Peter Obi who has been campaigning for the LP candidate.

The party is currently embroiled in a leadership tussle in Abia State.

A faction led by Deacon Iyke Nwoke is locked in a battle with that of Obinna Don-Norman for the soul of the party.

The 2023 governorship candidate of the party, Sunday Onuoha, was recently elevated to the position of Archbishop.

The key members of the party in Ebonyi are Linus Abaa Okorie and Silas Onu.

Mr Okorie represented Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives for two terms from 2011 to 2019.

He was the candidate of Labour Party in the 2023 election for Ebonyi South Senatorial zone, losing to David Umahi. He also lost to Umahi’s successor, Senator Anthony Ani, in the 2024 by-election after Umahi was made Minister by President Bola Tinubu.

Onu, a lawyer from Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area, is a former state chairman of the PDP.

He was the Senatorial candidate of the party for the 2024 bye election in Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone.

    South South

The presence of ADC in Rivers State is being facilitated by a former governor of the state and former Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi.

Amaechi, who has declared his presidential ambition on the platform of the party, is expected to attract some of his former allies in the APC and PDP.

However, not many of such allies have openly declared for the ADC for now.

Observers believe that a former national chairman of the PDP and ally of Atiku, Uche Secondus, former Transport Minister Dr. Abiye Sekibo; Senator Lee Maeba and  Senator  Andrew Uchendu will switch camps to ADC.

A leadership crisis in the Bayelsa State chapter of the party is seriously hampering its activities, according to sources.

It currently has no functional office in the state, but its state chairman, Mr Johnny Tovie Derek, is visible on social media.

The party’s South South zonal chairman, Mr Festus Igbinoba, said Derek is the duly recognised chairman in the state and described those talking about leadership crisis as those who do not wish the party well.

Igbinoba said the party was aware of efforts by some persons in government to sow the seed of discord in the party as a way of ensuring that the unity currently enjoyed in the party is scuttled, but noted that the party is determined to remain strong and resolute in the agenda of taking over power from the APC.

The statement reads in part: “Mr. Tovie Johnny is the Bayelsa State ADC Chairman who was duly elected. Any other person claiming to be the state party chairman is on their own and do not enjoy the imprimatur of the party leadership.

“We adopted the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism in Bayelsa State in resolving the internal leadership issues and successfully reinstated Mr Tovie Johnny to his position as chairman.

“I, as the National Vice Chairman South South of the party was in Bayelsa State to hold stakeholders meeting of the party where Tovie Johnny was affirmed as the state party chairman.

“We therefore urge the public to deal with the executive of the party headed by Mr. Tovie Johnny.”

The ADC in Edo State already has in its rank former governor of the state and former national chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun; national chairman of the defunct National  Republican  Convention (NRC), Chief Tom Ikimi; another former governor of the state, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor; Senator Roland Owie and Mr. Kenneth Imasuagbon.

However, observers wondered how much Oyegun (85), Ikimi (81), Owie (79) and Osunbor (73) have to offer at their age.

Also expected to team up with the Edo ADC are former Governor Godwin Obaseki and his supporters; Hon Jimoh Ijegbai, a former Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Hon Sergius Ogun, elected twice to the House of Representatives before he fell out with the PDP and Senator Ehigie Uzamere.

Former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke is coordinating ADC affairs in the state.

Observers are not sure of how much the former Power Minister in the Obasanjo Administration can make things happen for his new party, having been out of power for 10 years and could not save his former party, PDP, from defeat in the 2023 election.

Others with Imoke in Cross River ADC include Dr. John Ogar, Senator Gershom Bassey, Hon. Eta Mbora, Hon. Bassey Ewa, Emmanuel Ibeshi and former Minister Usani Usani.

For now, not too many notable politicians are identifying with the ADC in Delta State.

But it was gathered that economist Pat Utomi is on board.

Utomi is little know politically in the state where, in 2019, he lost his bid for the APC governorship ticket.

John Akpan Udo-Edehe who leads the party in Akwa Ibom has previously been in the PDP, APC and NNPP without delivering the state for any of them.

Sources wondered what magic he has up his sleeves now to deliver the APC-controlled state for his new party.

    North West

The ADC is hardly visible in Kaduna State where former Governor Nasir El Rufai is widely expected to be its face.

El Rufai, who has been unrelenting in his criticism of the APC-led federal government, appears lost in the scheme of things for now.

His ally and former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West) Malam Salihu Lukman is the only one doing all the talking for ADC  in the state, although some resistance was put up by the current party chairman, Ahmed Tijjani Mustapha, who alleged plan by the new members to hijack the party.

The ADC used to be an obscure opposition party in the state.

It is now engulfed in a crisis as the old members resist what they see as take over by the new members.

High-profile politicians expected to join soon include, Dr. John Ayuba, Senator Musa Bello and Alhaji Shuaibu Idris Mikati.

The ADC parades in Katsina State the likes of Alhaji  Mustapha Inuwa, a former Secretary to the state Government Aminu Surajo Makera, Jamilu Muhammad Lion Katsina and  Musa Salisu Dodo Kankara.

The most prominent name boasted by ADC in Kebbi State is the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Justice Minister Abubakar Malami (SAN). But he has been quiet lately.

The Kebbi State Chairman of the APC, Abubakar Kana, was dismissive of ADC, saying it has no relevance in the state.

According to Kara, Kebbi ADC is run by those he called a few immature youth.

    North East

The ADC may have made its biggest inroad so far in Adamawa, home state of its leading presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar.

With the former vice president already in his new party are governorship candidate of APC in 2023, Senator Aishatu Ahmed (Binani); governor of the state between 2015 and 2019, Senator Jibrilla Bindow; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal; and son of former governor Murtala Nyako, Abdulazeez Nyako, who was senator for Adamawa Central Zone from 2015 to 2019.

The ADC chairman in Adamawa State, Hon Shehu Yohana, who has been in the ADC since 2019 first as an ordinary member and then as state secretary and now chairman, said the party has enough room for the many people flocking into it.

Atiku’s long time ally and former minister Maina Waziri is expected to make things happen for the party in APC controlled Yobe State.

The APC is also firmly in control of neighbouring Borno, home state of Vice President Kashim Shettima.

    North Central

Until the July takeover of ADC by the coalition politicians, House of Reps member from Yagba West in Kogi State, Leke Abejide was the face of the party in the state.

But he has been resisting the take over which has not gone down well with the pro-coalition elements, setting the ground for a face-off between the two sides.

The pro-coalition elements recently announced that they had suspended Abejide.

Other prominent ADC members in the state are Idowu Ibikunle, Minority Leader, Kogi State House of Assembly representing Yagba West State constituency; Deborah Maji, State Women Leader; Kingsley Ogga, (suspended) State Chairman; John Adaji Udaje, State Secretary; Adamu Temitope, Organising Secretary; and Ige Bernard, Zonal Women Leader.

Senator Tunde Ogbeha recently joined from PDP.

Former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung, who also joined ADC recently, said in Jos that the party is waxing strong in Plateau State.

Dalung had previously contested and lost election into the House of Representatives in Langtang North/Langtang South.

Solomon Nandy Chendan, the 2023 governorship candidate of the party in the state, described the adoption of the ADC by the opposition as a turning point in Nigerian politics.

In Benue State, former governor Gabriel Suswam has been joined by Hon. Terngu Tsegba, a former member of House of Representative Representing Gboko /Tarka Federal Constituency; Bob Tyough, former member House of Representative for Ushongu/ Kwande; Hon. Herman Hembe, former member of House of Representatives, representing Jechira Federal Constituency; Professor Tivlumun Nyitse, former Chief of Staff  to the  Governor; Hon Joseph Tsavsar, business man;  Hon. Shiaondo Aarga, former Commissioner and Local Government chairman; and Hon Richard Gbande, former federal lawmaker representing Ukum- Logo and Katsina Ala; and David Mark, former Senate President.

A statement issued by the Ogbeh family said that the elder statesman who was also a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, died on Saturday, August 9, at the age of 78.

The family described the deceased as a patriarch who left a legacy of integrity, service and dedication to the country and community.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Chief Audu Ogbeh. He passed away on August 9 at the fulfilled age of 78.

“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set,” the family said.

Reacting to the elder statesman’s demise, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described him as a patriot whose wisdom, dedication, and pursuit of progress left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a condolence message to the government and people of Benue State, the President said the nation had lost a statesman of rare intellect and commitment to national development.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also commiserated with the late politician’s family, friends, and associates.

President Tinubu noted the late Ogbeh’s deep intellectual contributions to policy formulation and his skill in articulating practical solutions to the country’s complex challenges.

“He was always ready with facts and figures to support his propositions. The nation will sorely miss his insightful perspectives and wealth of experience,” the President said.

Joining politics in the 1970s as a legislator, Chief Ogbeh became a respected voice in governance, earning a reputation for principled service and an unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential, said Tinubu, as he prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and

God’s comfort to his bereaved family.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, described the deceased as a man of integrity and deep commitment to the Nigerian project, saying his death is a monumental loss to the nation.

Akume, who paid a condolence visit to Ogbeh’s Abuja residence on Saturday, hailed the elder statesman as a distinguished leader, consummate public servant, and patriot who dedicated his life to the service of his people and the country in various capacities.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume described Ogbeh as a “distinguished leader, teacher, patriot, consummate public servant, and quintessential intellectual, who shone more than a million stars in the service of his community, Benue State, and Nigeria as a whole.”

“Our prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind, and we pray that Almighty God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of this perfect gentleman,” he added.

Likewise, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo expressed shock and sadness over Ogbeh’s demise.

Obasanjo who is in Uganda on a visit, described the late Minister as a peace-loving, unassuming, committed patriot and a firm believer in democracy and participatory governance.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former President stressed that late Ogbeh “will be missed for his commitment to politics, governance and democracy and the re-establishment of democracy in Nigeria.  His place will be very difficult to fill within his community, the State, the Party and the nation.”

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also expressed sadness over the passing of Ogbeh.

Akpabio, in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, described the late statesman as a distinguished Nigerian that lived a life of service and integrity.

“Chief Ogbeh lived a life of service, integrity, and commitment to the development of our nation. He was an intellectual store house, whose legacy of service and dedication to Nigeria is a testament to his character and commitment to public service. We will sorely miss him.

“On behalf of my family, constituents and the 10th Senate, I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Chief Audu Ogbeh, his friends, political associates, and the people and government of Benue State as well as our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, on his part, described Ogbeh’s demise as a rude shock stressing that the late Audu Ogbeh was a quintessential gentleman, an amiable friend and reliable political ally, whose immense contributions to nation-building would be sorely missed.

“He was a detribalised and development-minded politician. One who combined intellectualism with pragmatism. He was also a true defender of liberal democracy. His type is difficult to replace,” Atiku said, and prayed that “the Almighty blissfully rests his soul and comfort his family.”

The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former President of the Senate, David Mark, also lamented the death of frontline politician and former PDP chairman.

In a statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, Senator Mark said: “I have lost a dependable brother and friend.”

Mark recalled that Ogbeh was among the rare breed of political leaders who genuinely believed in the unity of Nigeria, where no citizen should be oppressed or denied the opportunity to fulfil their dreams.

“Ogbeh preached justice, fairness, and equity. He was morally upright even in the face of adversity,” he said, urging his family and the people of Benue State to take solace in the fact that the deceased lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, on his part, stated that the late Ogbeh was one of the most effective national chairmen in the history of the PDP.

In a personal tribute, Ibori praised the late Ogbeh as a humble and unassuming gentleman who valued integrity above money or personal gain.

Ibori recalled that during his bid for re-election as governor in 2003, Ogbeh was given direct instructions to block his candidacy. However, Ogbeh, being a man of principle, refused to comply with what he termed “devilish machinations.” Ibori went on to contest and win the election, completing his second term in 2007.

“On behalf of myself, my wife, and my entire family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, and the good people of Benue State. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” he said.

The Northern State Governors’ Forum (NSGF) also expressed sadness over the demise of the elder statesman.

Chairman of the forum and Governor of Gombe, Inuwa Yahaya, in a condolence message issued by his Media Aide, Ismaila Uba-Misilli,on Saturday, in Gombe, described Ogbeh as a towering political figure, a statesman of uncommon intellect and an iconic son of Northern Nigeria.

“Chief Audu Ogbeh was an accomplished leader, a seasoned politician and multifaceted scholar whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and development will remain etched in history.

“He brought dignity and depth to every office he held and served the country with integrity and commitment,” he said.

The NSGF chairman described Ogbeh’s death as a huge loss not only to Benue and the north, but also to the entire country as he left behind a legacy of patriotism, intellectual depth, humility and outstanding public service.

The Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF) also condoled with the family of late Ogbeh; Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, in a statement in Abuja, described him as a statesman whose vision extended beyond politics into the fields and homes of Nigerian farmers. During his tenure as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, he launched initiatives like the Agricultural Inputs Mechanisation and Management Services (AIMMS) to enhance transparency and reduce fraud.

“In his public life, Chief Ogbeh always put Nigeria first, preaching about the unity and betterment of Nigeria. He was a good ambassador of Benue State, and his contributions to national development will be remembered.”

Former Delta State Governor, James Onanefe Ibori, has described the late Audu Ogbeh as one of the most effective national chairmen in the history of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a personal tribute, Ibori praised the late Ogbeh as a humble and unassuming gentleman who valued integrity above money or personal gain.

Reflecting on their political history, Ibori recalled that during his bid for re-election as governor in 2003, Ogbeh was given direct instructions to block his candidacy. However, Ogbeh, being a man of principle, refused to comply with what he termed “devilish machinations.”

Ibori went on to contest and win the election, completing his second term in 2007.

Police: Sowore not tortured in custody, detention lawful

The Police on Friday night dismissed allegations that the arrest of political activist, Omoyele Sowore was illegal and that he was being tortured in custody.

The clarification, contained in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, followed a wave of protests about Sowore’s detention.

The statement reads: “Contrary to the falsehoods being circulated, Mr. Sowore was arrested based on credible, corroborated allegations involving criminal offences such as forgery, cyberstalking, and other infractions currently under active investigation.

“The arrest was effected in full compliance with extant legal provisions, and with strict adherence to constitutional safeguards, due process, and the rights of the suspect.

“To be clear, Mr. Sowore was released on bail well within the 48-hour constitutional window, in accordance with the provisions of Section 35(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“He is fully aware of the nature of the allegations against him and has been duly informed of the charges. He is expected to appear before a court of competent jurisdiction in the coming days to answer to the accusations in a lawful and transparent judicial process.”

Continuing, the police described as false and grossly misleading, allegations that Sowore was tortured or subjected to any form of inhuman or degrading treatment while in custody.

The Nigeria Police Force maintains a zero-tolerance policy for torture, in alignment with the provisions of the Anti-Torture Act, 2017, and in fulfilment of Nigeria’s obligations under applicable international human rights instruments, he said.

“The viral image of Mr. Sowore with a bandaged arm has been mischievously presented to mislead the public and stir unwarranted outrage. For the record, the bandage was part of his personal belongings at the time he honoured the Police’s invitation-prior to his arrest and detention.

“In any case, upon receiving the report that Mr. Sowore was later seen wearing the bandage while in custody, the Inspector-General of Police promptly ordered an internal investigation to ascertain how he had access to it during detention, particularly in light of his consistent refusal to undergo medical examination by the independent teams deployed by the police.

“This proactive step underscores the IGP’s unwavering commitment to transparency, professionalism, and strict adherence to established custodial protocols.

“In the spirit of accountability and transparency, the Force promptly responded to the claims of brutality by dispatching a medical team led by the Medical Director (MD) of the Muhammadu Buhari Police Hospital, to conduct an independent examination on August 7.

“Mr Sowore declined the evaluation. A second medical team, this time led by the Force Medical Officer, was sent on August 8, and again, access was denied by the suspect. These refusals are officially documented.

“While the police respect the individual’s right to decline medical assessment, the record must show that the opportunity for independent medical verification was twice provided and twice rejected,” said Adejobi.

The police denied allegations that the continued detention of Sowore was arbitrary, explaining that it was anchored on a valid remand order issued by a competent court of jurisdiction.

“Every action taken by the Nigeria Police Force in this matter has been underpinned by legal authority, devoid of malice, bias, or political undertones,” it said, urging the media, civil society actors, and the public to exercise greater diligence, restraint, and professional responsibility in their reporting.

“Sensationalism, particularly when driven by those with personal vendettas against the police leadership, poses a clear risk to public trust and the integrity of ongoing investigations.

“The Nigeria Police Force reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights, respect for the rule of law, and the pursuit of justice without fear or favour. No individual, regardless of their status, influence, or social media reach, is above the law,” it said.

  • Kumuyi speaks on succession, says blackmail won’t make me quit

Kumuyi speaks on succession, says blackmail won’t make me quit

The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has addressed the issue of succession in the church, saying he would not be pressured or controlled by anyone

Speaking at the leaders’ meeting of the church, the clergyman made it clear that he would continue to lead with conviction and would not be pressured to quit his leadership of the church.

Questioning recent emphasis by some church members on the topic of succession, Pastor Kumuyi said: “I’m wondering why this young man is emphasising successor, successor. Are they tired of me? Are you tired of me?

“Anyone trying to control me, I will not take it; not even from my wife. I am the head of the home.

“I have been preaching before I married my first wife, and even before I married the second wife after the first passed away.

“I stand where I stand with conviction, and nobody will put me under.”

Kumuyi recalled that a leader in the church had mentioned succession twice in a recent teaching.

He said while he initially chose not to comment, those that are close to him know the extent of his commitment to work in the ministry.

He identified some Bible characters and their successors, noting that it was God who chose successors for them.

Kumuyi, who was visibly pained that some members of the church did not seem to like seeing him around, said: “You are not going to fight your shepherd, your pilot. I reject any member of the church, whether you are a worker, choir member, or security person, who tries to control me.

“I don’t generally sleep until 2 a.m., sometimes 2:30 a.m., digging into the Word and preparing to give my best to the church. Yet there are some people who still want to restrict where I preach, how I preach, and how long I preach. I will not take that,” he said.

The preacher urged church members and workers — including the choir, ushers, security teams, and family members — not to attempt to weaken his convictions.

“Don’t try to kill my conviction. You will not succeed. It will only make me resist you more and still teach the truth.

“When we get to the other side, you will not say, ‘He didn’t tell us.’ I told you, I am telling you, and I will keep on telling you,” Kumuyi declared.

He recounted how he spent so much time digging into God’s word just to give the church the best, saying: “If God gives you a pastor that is still very active at this age, with a good voice running everywhere to preach the gospel and you are asking for a successor, it makes me think you are tired of seeing me around.

“You don’t want to make me feel I’m imposing myself on you.”

Declaring that a successor is coming, he said: “When the time comes, God will choose a man after His own heart. Don’t try to drive me away, even though I know you cannot.”

He added that unlearning unproductive practices was necessary for spiritual growth, stressing that opposition to the pastor’s God-given mandate was “useless” and without reward in heaven.

“I will keep on teaching until I go.”
