    Unruly passenger remanded in Kirikiri

    • Airline Operators of Nigeria bans Ms. Emmanson ‘for life’
    • Virtually-impaired persons’ protest locks down Lagos airport

An unruly Ibom Air passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre yesterday after she was arraigned for alleged assault.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), said the passenger was arraigned at the Ikeja Magistrates Court for criminal offences and remanded because she could not provide adequate sureties.

The minister condemned the release of her video showing indecent exposure of her body parts.

He directed that whoever released that part of the video amongst the staff should be singled out and sanctioned.

He also directed airlines to train and retrain their staff on how to deal with potentially explosive situations to diffuse them.

The minister called a joint aviation security meeting for next week for better coordination of security measures.

It is the second time in one week that untoward behavior by passengers will be recorded at the airports.

While Ms. Emmanson issue occurred at the Lagos Airport, Fuji Musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal was involved in another incident last week at the Abuja airport.

In Ms. Emmanson’s case a viral video of the incident showing officials of the airline struggling to bundle her out of the aircraft while indecently exposing parts of her body.

Keyamo, in a statement posted on X handle, said the incident occurred on Sunday on Ibom Airline Flight No. Q153 from Uyo to Lagos at about 14:54 hours.

“Whilst we support the filming of her recalcitrant behaviour as evidence to prosecute her, what is deplorable is to release such evidence containing indecent exposure to the public to ridicule her.

“That is totally unacceptable to us. We will not fold our arms and tolerate the debasing of womanhood.

“I have therefore directed that whoever released that part of the video containing the indecent exposure amongst the staff should be singled out and adequately sanctioned,” Keyamo said.

He urged genuinely aggrieved passengers to use laid-down remedies to address grievances, such as the Consumer Protection Directorate of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

    Ibom Air recounts incident

Ibom Air said shortly before take-off from Uyo, Ms. Emmanson was instructed to switch off her mobile phone in line with standard aviation safety procedures.

It added: “She bluntly refused to comply until the Pilot-in-Command made an announcement, after which a fellow passenger seated beside her took the phone and switched it off.

“This action prompted a verbal tirade from Ms. Emmanson. The situation was eventually calmed, and the flight departed as scheduled.

“Upon arrival in Lagos, Ms. Emmanson waited for all other passengers to disembark and then proceeded to confront the Purser, who had earlier instructed her.

“She walked up to the unsuspecting Purser, stepped on her, forcibly tore off her wig, removed her glasses and threw them to the floor, and used her footwear to assault her.

“She slapped her several times, and when the other cabin crew member tried to intervene, she slapped her too.

“She then attempted to forcibly remove a fire extinguisher to use as weapon, an act that could have damaged and grounded the aircraft.

“By this time, the Pilot-in-Command had alerted airport security. Before security could arrive, the Purser, as seen in the viral video on the internet, prevented the passenger from leaving the aircraft until security arrived.

“The arrival of Ibom Air Security personnel did not deter the passenger, as she attacked them as well, lashing out violently at both Ibom Air and FAAN security.

“She was then restrained and removed from the aircraft by force. Even after disembarking, she continued to assault both Ibom Air and FAAN security staff, and even slapped the ground supervisor.”

    FAAN warns passengers

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) warned against rising disruptive behaviour at airports, vowing strict penalties under aviation laws.

FAAN urged travellers to know their rights, responsibilities, and bylaws to avoid sanctions.

Citing the Ibom Air incident, it said offenders will be restrained, prosecuted, and punished per ICAO and national regulations.

The agency pledged improved security to safeguard the safety, security, and comfort of airport users.

    AON bans passenger for life

The domestic carriers union, Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), placed a ‘no-fly ban’ for life on Ms. Emmanson.

AON’s spokesperson, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, said: “The attempted use of a fire extinguisher as a weapon constitutes one of the most severe cases of unruly passenger behaviour witnessed this year.

“This was not just disruptive; it was a sustained, violent attack that placed the lives of crew, passengers, and the integrity of the aircraft itself at risk. This behaviour is unacceptable.

“Therefore, effective immediately, the AON has placed Ms. Emmanson on its ‘No Fly’ list indefinitely.

“She is hereby banned from flying with any AON member either domestically or internationally for life.

“Such incidents have become one too many, with the most recent being the incident involving Nigerian musician, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1) on ValueJet and the unruly behaviour of Senator Adams Oshiomhole towards the members of staff of Air Peace.

“It is also worth mentioning that this incident exposes the vulnerabilities in the security response by the Aviation Security (AVSEC).

“The AON urgently calls on FAAN to immediately review and tighten security procedures at all airports across the country.

“The AON stands united with Ibom Air and all our members in maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards unruly airline passengers.

“Going forward, anyone who exhibits such behaviour will suffer similar consequences. While we recognise the rights of passengers to express their grievances, such actions must follow due process.

“We are committed to protecting our employees, passengers, equipment and maintaining the highest safety standards “

Also, the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals (ANAP), in a statement by its Secretary General, AbdulRasaq Saidu, urged the NCAA to review its existing protocols on violent passenger behaviour.

It called for the reinvigoration of enforcement methods at the aerodromes, “especially with regard to protection of aviation workers from criminal harm makers in the form of unwanted unruly passengers.”

    Obi deplores double standards

Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi said while the passenger’s behaviour was inexcusable, the law should apply equally to all.

In a statement posted on his official X handle, he said: “It is unacceptable that she was hurriedly taken to court and remanded, while someone who visibly held a plane from taking off and put hundreds of lives at risk is still at large, with government agencies and some state officials speaking up for him to be forgiven.

“This case is not just about one young woman; it is about the double standards that poison our justice system.

“Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials.

“While Ms. Emmanson is in jail, the other offender who committed a more severe offence has not been held to the same standard. He has neither been arrested nor arraigned in any court.

“We must build a country where justice is fair, equal, and not selective, especially against women who are seen to be weaker.”

He also condemned what he described as the “dehumanising” treatment meted out to her.

“Stripping her publicly was not only unnecessary but also represents the height of rascality and abuse by our agencies,” the former governor stated.

“We must end this selective treatment of the poor or less privileged. If justice must be served, it should be served to all, and it must be served fairly.”

“The Minister of Aviation and other relevant authorities owe the public an explanation for these double standards in their adjudication.

“Justice must be just, or it is nothing at all. The rule of law based on justice for all must remain the guidepost of our democracy.”

  • Ogun Govt, Daniel row over land escalates

Ogun Govt, Daniel row over land escalates

The gulf between the Ogun State Government and former Governor Gbenga Daniel over alleged contravention of building regulations by the latter widened yesterday.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development Tunji Odunlami justified the issuance of compliance notices to 58 property owners in Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu local government areas of the state.

He said the government plans to aid urban development and control land use in public interest’ with its physical planning laws and regulations.

Odunlami told reporters yesterday at a news conference at the Olusegun Osoba Press Centre, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, that the goal of the ongoing regularization in the Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode axis is not to victimize any law-abiding citizens but to ensure that development laws are obeyed.

The commissioner said the physical planning regulations are enforceable at any time and for all time, on all developments in the state including developments that preceded the law.

But the one-time governor accused the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led of double speak and being on a vengeance mission.

Daniel argued that administration has no moral right to paste notices on people’s properties if it had not pasted same on his Iperu country home residence.

According to the former governor, Prince Abiodun’s private house built on a major federal road (Iperu- Ode Remo Road) has no setback.

He wondered why the same notices were not pasted on it “if the Dapo Abiodun-led Ogun State Government had no ulterior motive in targeting him and his properties.

He said that the Aseludero Court Hall in Sagamu was the place where Dapo Abiodun’s hand was raised up by him in the build-up to the 2019 governorship election and endorsed before a mammoth crowd of political supporters and associates, wondering why the property had just contravene building regulations six years after Abiodun came into power.

Daniel spoke yesterday at the Aseludero Hall within his Aseludero Court private residence in Sagamu through his media aide Steve Oliyide.

Oliyide spoke with reporters in the company of Akogun Kola Onadipe, a building specialist, who served as a commissioner under Daniel as governor of the state.

Insisting that the governor is “persecuting” him “politically”, the governor claimed that the people, not the governor will determine his political fate in 2027.

He was referring to his ambition to seek re-election as Ogun East senator in 2027.

According to him, the electorate have been upporting his political career since 2003.

He warned that the on-going political persecution by the governor under the guise of alleged building laws contravention, could plunge the state into “chaos” if he not properly guided.

”Does his house in Iperu, facing the Iperu – Ode – Isara Road has approved setback? That house should be demolished. If the administration had not pasted any notice of contravention on his property, it does not have moral right to demolish any property in the state”, he said.

Yesterday in Abeokuta, Odunlami said it was wrong for any property owner to create an impression that he was being deliberately targeted by the government.

He said that the notices, sent to 35 property owners in Sagamu and 23 in Ijebu-Ode council areas, are aimed at verifying the permit status of all types of developments, including houses, schools, hospitals, and other commercial buildings.

The commissioner urged Daniel, like owners of other affected properties served with such notices, to approach the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority, an agency of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, to present relevant documents in conformity with existing building laws and regulations.

He said: “It is pertinent to note that this is a daily routine and ongoing activity of this agency and is devoid of witch-hunting, and therefore not designed to harm the interests of any individual.

“It is a simple and transparent approach that is known and adopted worldwide, including in most states in Nigeria. What we are currently doing is no exception.

“This exercise has been done in Abeokuta and is now extended to Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, where there is no fuss except this one. It is also going to be carried out in Ota and Ilaro, where we also have GRAs.”

Shettima leads presidential delegation to Audu Ogbe’s family

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday described the late former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbe, as one of Nigeria’s most visionary leaders whose contributions to food security will remain indelibly etched in the nation’s development history.

Shettima, who led President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s delegation on a condolence visit to the Ogbe family in Abuja, said the passing of the elder statesman at 78 was “an irreparable loss to Nigeria’s agricultural transformation drive and national development trajectory.”

In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said, “We are here at the behest of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, the government, and people of Benue State over the sad demise of our elder statesman, Chief Audu Ogbe.

“We have not just lost a former minister; we have lost an irreplaceable institution whose vision and pragmatic approach to agricultural development transformed the landscape of our farming communities”, the Vice President said.

Eulogising the late politician, who died peacefully on Saturday, Shettima described him as a transformational leader whose impact transcended political affiliations and regional boundaries, adding that his work offered a blueprint for sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria.

“He was a most committed advocate of agricultural transformation who endeared himself to many with his wisdom, pragmatism, and genuine concern for the well-being of farming families. His demise represents a collective loss to our entire agricultural ecosystem”, Shettima said.

The Vice President highlighted Ogbe’s integrity, dedication, and unwavering commitment to rural development, noting that millions of farming households benefited from his initiatives and vision.

“I pray that Almighty Allah will forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. May Allah also grant the family, the government and people of Benue State, and indeed the entire nation, the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss”, he said.

  • BREAKING: Customs seize N10bn worth of contraband, arms, drugs at Lagos Port

BREAKING: Customs seize N10bn worth of contraband, arms, drugs at Lagos Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 16 containers loaded with prohibited items, including firearms, ammunition, military gear, and fake drugs, worth N10 billion at the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos yesterday, Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi said the seizures included two pump-action rifles, 25 cartridges of ammunition, and 202 cans of Colorado Loud, a Canadian strain of cannabis, concealed inside a 40-foot container numbered MRSU6407089.

The container, he revealed, was consigned to Mr. Babatunde Ogidiolu of a Lagos address.

Adeniyi explained that the container had initially been cleared as clean, but a secondary search by joint security agencies uncovered the illicit cargo. Each can of Colorado Loud weighed 500 grams, making a total haul of 101 kilograms — about the equivalent of two bags of cement.

He added that intelligence reports indicated other contraband could be hidden inside the seized containers, prompting directives for full scanning to expose all concealed items.

“And when this was done, arms and ammunition were discovered inside the container. Two pump-action rifles and 25 cartridges of ammunition were discovered. Also discovered was one Smith & Wesson pistol with 55 rounds of ammunition, one blank, and a number of accessories.

“This container had Mr. Babatunde Ogidiolu of an address in Lagos as the consignee of these products. Other seizures include that of seven containers of expired drugs and prohibited medicaments, three containers of expired food items, particularly margarine, and three containers of absolutely prohibited used clothing.”

Over the weekend, Adeniyi disclosed, “we also launched an operation through the customs area where one container, one by 40-footer container, number OERU4243517, was seized.

“And it contained 1,290 sacks of frozen poultry products. Another container, FBIU5507953, a 40-footer container, also had 1,290 sacks of frozen chicken. Another interesting seizure has to do with an importation that has infringed intellectual property rights.

“It was established that this container, number ZZSU7277511, had 305 cartons of toothpaste that were concealed with beads and a Jalabiya dress. This particular seizure also underscores what customs does with other agencies of government regarding the enforcement of branch rules. It was a case of infringement of a brand owned by a Nigerian company. Because these products were also not registered by NAFDAC, in addition to the brand infringement, they are subject to seizure.

“Two other containers of expired chest and lung tablets without NAFDAC registration number were also seized. And as we were putting together this press briefing, two containers that we have followed over a period of time from our partners arrived at our ports yesterday.

And true to the information that we received, he said, “These two containers, 40-foot containers, contained codeine. These two containers have also been seized. And the information that we had on these containers is linking the owners to those of the previous ones that we have made.”

The Service, he added, has “therefore deployed tools, technology, and intelligence to help us to strike a delicate balance between and among all these mandates. In doing so, we have found ourselves working on some tightropes to ensure that we do not give attention to one and allow another one to suffer. The results that we have gotten in the last two years have justified the fact that we are doing our best in striking a healthy balance,” Adeniyi said.

Armed operatives block MMA 2 bridge, cause traffic gridlock

Heavily armed security operatives on Monday blocked the bridge leading to the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA 2), Lagos, from the Ikeja axis, leaving commuters and air travellers stranded.

The officers, whose reason for the action remains unclear, declined to speak with journalists at the scene.

The unexpected blockade triggered a massive traffic gridlock, forcing passengers arriving and departing MMA 2 to walk out of the airport, carrying their luggage under the scorching sun.

Some of the officers, alongside two officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), were on the ground to ensure traffic movement.

NAF airstrikes eliminate over 100 bandits in Zamfara forests

The Military has neutralised more than 100 terrorists during coordinated airstrikes followed by ground assault and clearances in Makakkari Forest of Bukuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

This development occurred in the early hours of Sunday when the thunder of military aircraft and the relentless advance of ground troops signalled the beginning of an operation that would leave over 100 bandits dead, their motorcycles smouldering, and their stronghold in ruins.

A security expert, Zagazola Makama, reported for weeks, intelligence operatives of Operation “FANSAN YAMMA” (OPFY) had tracked unusual movements across the Sunke, Kirsa, and Barukushe axis which are well-known bandits havens.

According to him, reports indicated that more than 400 armed fighters, led by some of the region’s most feared kingpins, were massing in Makakkari Forest  targeting Nasarawan Burkullu, a farming community in Bukuyum Local Government Area.

According to a source, who spoke to Zagazola, the planned raid of the terrorists was intended to avenge a recent defeat suffered by the criminals in a clash with security forces and hybrid units.

“They thought they could regroup, rearm, and launch another wave of terror,” the sources said.

“Instead, they walked straight into a well-laid trap.”

The operation began with Air Force platforms swooping low, unleashing precision strikes on bandit clusters identified by reconnaissance drones.

Plumes of smoke sighted rose to the sky from the forest as dozens of the terrorists on their motorcycles, the gang’s primary means of mobility, were obliterated.

“Several notorious kingpins and scores of their foot soldiers met their waterloo before they could even fire a shot,” the sources recounted.

“Those who tried to scatter were intercepted by our ground assault team in another location.”

The targeted farming community of Adafka village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area were reportedly seen laying down on the tires of security pickup Hilux vehicle holding green leaves on their hands a sign of protest blocking the security from flee.

EFCC, Obj Library lock horns over arrest of 93 fraud suspects

    • Anti-graft agency ‘acted on credible intelligence’
    • ‘It was invasion of OOPL premises’

A sting operation in the wee hours of Sunday, leading to the arrest of 93 suspected internet fraudsters, has put the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at odds with the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta.

The agency, which said it acted on credible intelligence, swooped on the expansive facility to make the arrests, during which it recovered 18 vehicles and mobile devices from the suspects.

In its statement announcing the action, the EFCC did not give the name of the place where the operation took place.

But hours later, the OOPL said it took place on its premises, alleging an “invasion” in a “Gestapo-like manner”.

It called for an apology and threatened to take up the issue with the authorities and a likely challenge in court.

Dele Oyewale, spokesman of the EFCC, said: “Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the EFCC have arrested 93 suspected internet fraudsters in Ogun State.

“They were arrested on Sunday, August 10, 2025, in a sting operation in Abeokuta, Ogun State, following credible intelligence about their suspected involvement in internet crimes.

“Upon their arrest, 18 vehicles and mobile devices were recovered from them.

“They will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

But the OOPL management frowned at the operation.

It said in a statement by Kehinde Adeyemi: “This (yesterday) morning, at about 2:00 a.m., the premises of the OOPL were invaded by a Gestapo-like gang of over 50 armed men, purportedly from the EFCC.

“The invasion, led by one ‘Olapade’, caused serious panic and chaos, leading to severe injuries among participants trying to escape the shooting and near carnage that resulted, as well as terror among residents on the site.

“On inquiry by phone, the said ‘Olapade’ informed the Managing Director of the OOPL establishment, Mr. Vitalis Ortese, that they were acting on an intelligence tip about a ‘Yahoo Yahoo’ (internet fraud) activity at the venue.

“They also claimed the incident took place during a private event in the amusement facility of the complex.

“It should be noted that the event in question was a private event that had been widely advertised to members of the public for days prior.

“Both the police officers stationed at the OOPL gates and the additional police sent from the Kemta Police Station at the request of management confirmed they had been duly informed of the event.

Read Also: EFCC, Police in tussle over suspects

“The organisers of the event and the management stated that they were not informed of any planned EFCC operation, nor did the EFCC operatives present any warrant.

“When asked about their actions, the EFCC agents simply retorted: ‘We are doing our job.’

“The OOPL management states that this action by the EFCC constitutes a clear case of invasion of private property, infringement of OOPL’s rights as a corporate citizen, and indeed a stark and blatant violation of the rights of the people who gathered for the event.

“Management has commenced its investigation into the invasion and will take up the matter with the highest authorities, including the EFCC, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

“In the meantime, management demands an explanation for these impudent actions from the EFCC, as well as a public apology from the EFCC authorities for the infringement of its rights, the rights of all attendees, and for the injuries sustained by victims of the gangster-like, induced chaos.

“Failure to do so will compel management to seek redress and sanctions as appropriate.”

Attempts to get Oyewale’s reaction to the allegations by the OOPL failed.

He said the agency had already issued a statement on the arrest.

The OOPL has many facilities such as library and museum, presidential garage, amphitheatre, event centres, wildlife park, rounda fun spot, water sports, tennis court, gym and sauna, dining and relaxation, rock café, bamboo restaurant and bar, a lounge and Green Legacy Resort – a 4-star hotel with luxurious rooms, a swimming pool, gym, and spa.
