Bandits, Boko Haram pact behind renewed insecurity

The widely held view that Boko Haram terrorists have struck an alliance with bandits was confirmed yesterday by the Federal Government.

The government said the “unholy handshake” is responsible for the upsurge in killings in Plateau and Kaduna states as well as the attack on the Kaduna-bound train from Abuja on March 28.

The government, however, assured that efforts were on to crush the insurgents.

Minister for Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and his Defence counterpart Gen. Bashir Magashi, spoke on the worsening insecurity after yesterday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at Aso Villa.

Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai had hinted at the alliance of the terrorists after the train attack in which nine people were killed and no fewer than 68 people abducted and taken to the forest in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

The terrorists are demanding huge ransoms from the family members of their victims.

In the Plateau attack, more than 100 people were killed, 70 residents were kidnapped and about 100 houses were destroyed by terrorists last Sunday.

Mohammed said: “What is happening now is that there is a kind of unholy handshake between bandits and Boko Haram insurgents.

“Preliminary reports of what transpired at the Kaduna train attack show that there is a kind of collaboration between the bandits and dislodged Boko Haram terrorists from the Northeast.

“I can tell you very confidently that the Federal Government is on top of this matter.

“As I explained here last week, we are fighting an asymmetrical war, a war in which the other side does not obey or recognise the rules of engagement, but where we are compelled to fight according to the rules of engagement.

“What happened two Mondays ago shook the whole country, yes, but that is the modus operandi of terrorists.

“After a month of being decimated, of being defeated, they rally around and make one spectacular attack that will try to retreat the successes of the government, but I can assure you we are not distracted by that.”

On the 72-hour ultimatum by the families of the kidnapped train passengers, Mohammed said the government understood their position.

“The respective arms of government are working to get those victims released.

“I think the Minister of Defence has already addressed the issues.

“One is that what the Federal Government is doing won’t be the subject matter of a press conference, because we have lives at stake.

“The various arms of security are working night and day to unravel the mystery surrounding the attack as a whole.

“It’s natural for anybody who is a father or a mother of a kidnapped person to be worried and to be concerned, but at the level of government, we appreciate that and we are leaving no stone unturned.

“We’ve done what is necessary; we’ve condoled with the victims, but like the Minister of Defence said, we are not at liberty here to tell you exactly what we’re doing on a daily basis, but I can assure you that we are certainly winning the war.”

Gen Magashi said the government was on top of the situation.

“Security chiefs are working hard to unveil those that are involved. We will tell you very soon about those that are carrying out these attacks.

“For both attacks in Jos and Kaduna, we will explain to the public what is really going on as per our efforts to ensure that all these activities are stopped once and for all.

“We are really on top of the situation, we are planning hard and we will get it out as soon as possible,” the Defence minister said.

  • Tinubu canvasses drastic, courageous changes as way forward

Tinubu canvasses drastic, courageous changes as way forward

All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday said Nigeria needed a courageous leader who can make drastic changes.

He described himself as that man Nigeria needs to take charge of the wheel of progress.

Tinubu spoke at a one-day parley between current speakers and deputy speakers of the APC-controlled states.

The theme was: ‘The legislature, changing times and Nigeria’s democratic journey’.

It was hosted by Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa in Ikeja.

Tinubu stressed that development was about thinking and doing, which he had demonstrated.

The presidential aspirant said: “Nigeria needs me even as I need Nigeria. Nigeria needs drastic courageous changes that will bring revenue and I am that courageous one it needs.

“I was raised to be courageous and this has been working for me. I want to bring same to bear as president of Nigeria.

“Accelerated development of our nation is about thinking and doing, and I am ready to do that again because I am a thinker and doer.

“I want to become president legitimately through the ballot but I reserve the right to brag.

“I started my teething age of politics in the Senate; I was the youngest and I did well.

“I am well educated, sound, brilliant, vibrant, and one of the best alumni of the Chicago State University.

“I was a student-tutor and one of the most sought-after graduates after school as I had five job offers even before graduation.

“In the face of tyranny and all odds, I have survived, stood and fought for democracy, survived the exile, lived without family, while financing other pro-democracy groups.

“I have contributed to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy more than any other person. I am a very passionate being.

“I have contributed immensely more than any other person contesting today. I equally have it better when it comes to legislative experience.

“I am married to a senator, and have allowed her practice her religion well.”

Tinubu, who begged the lawmakers to spread the news of his ambition, added: “I am pushing and requesting for your support to be elected president of Nigeria in 2023.

“I am begging you to do me a favour so I can do Nigeria a favour. No one should leave here without a commitment to vote for me as a delegate.

“It is a very challenging time and we need to decide it right. How many of my fellow contenders have my experience as governor, even of a governor of my calibre?

“I am the first governor to grant autonomy to the House of Assembly even as I am knowledgeable in legislative duties.

“I survived the non-allocation of local government funds in Lagos, functioned and created jobs. We made progress out of adversity.

“Revenue generation, not allocation, has made Lagos the number one economy in Africa.

“Nigeria should not be an index of poverty, frustration, banditry, hooliganism, and the likes, but a country that we will all be proud of. We need to get it right.

“Nigeria needs me even as I need Nigeria. I will be a good example. I have a can-do spirit. I am confident, and I have never lost an election. I was raised to be courageous and this has been working for me.

“We can change the fortune of this country without giving excuses. I have demonstrated it in Lagos, and though people talk about traffic, I tell you that if there is no good economy, there won’t be traffic.

“We can rebuild this nation, reverse the carnage, but you need the visioner. I am the best visioner available and so I plead with you to decide well on who the APC candidate will be.

“Please decide well and I promise I will not let you down.”

Fifteen serving Speakers from APC-controlled states attended the consultative forum, which also had serving Deputy Speakers, serving state legislators and all former members of the Conference of Speakers in attendance.

They unanimously expressed support for Tinubu in his bid to get the party’s nomination to contest for president.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said Tinubu’s leadership capacity had been sufficiently demonstrated, given the tenacity with which he rolled out vision and ideas that transformed Lagos into a flourishing economy.

The governor said the forum was held as part of wide consultations embarked on by the APC leader in his bid to win the support of the party members across various backgrounds and camps.

Sanwo-Olu said: “It is not by chance that you all are gathered here today. It is because we agree totally that you all are important stakeholders that need to be engaged and identified with separately from others.

“You are the real foot soldiers who can go back to the hallowed chambers and pass the message to all members of your respective Houses of Assembly and your former colleagues in the legislature across States.

“Tell them that the man, Asiwaju Tinubu, whom we all look forward to, has reached out and identified with them as important stakeholders in the journey to next political dispensation. We need a fresh breath of leadership at this critical moment in our country.

“Asiwaju is qualified and competent to provide the leadership we desire to see. He has the spirit, capacity, tenacity and experience to do that for us.

“As stakeholders, legislators, both current and former, are the critical component that can make this happen for us.”

The governor said a better and greater Nigeria could be achieved if a detribalised candidate that had been tested with the right leadership capacity was given collective support to succeed President Buhari and build on the progress recorded by the current administration.

Chairman of the Conference of Speakers and Bauchi State Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, described Tinubu as ‘a great leader with character and sacrifices’.

He added: “We are well abreast of Tinubu’s aspirations, and members of the state Houses of Assembly will be part of his aspirations.”

Lagos State Chairman of the APC Cornelius Ojelabi said Tinubu has the Midas touch to turn Nigeria around having done so in Lagos.

“Tinubu turned Lagos into a land of Gold, and well should support him to replicate his Lagos feat in the national. We must not miss the opportunity to make him president,” he added.

The lawmaker representing Epe I, Abiodun Tobun, noted that the message was for everyone to go back home and canvass vote for Tinubu.

“Canvass vote for good governance, prosperity security, enablement, determination and confidence, courage to lead this country to the promised land,” he said.

  • Cracks over zoning, consensus deepen in PDP

Cracks over zoning, consensus deepen in PDP

By Gbade Ogunwale, Abuja, Bisi Olaniyi, Benin and Nsa Gill, Calabar

There is growing disquiet in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over what method to adopt in choosing the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2023 election.

The issue has pitted the pro-zoning aspirants against those pushing for a consensus candidate.

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, who took his consultation to Cross River State, restated his opposition to the consensus idea.

He also said his declaration to run for president was not to end up as a running mate on the PDP ticket.

But the two groups are stepping up their consultations, selling their preferred options to the various power blocks and stakeholders.

The quartet of former Senate President Bukola Saraki, Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, took their consensus campaign to Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who told them to ensure equity and justice.

Those pushing for zoning of the ticket to the South are: former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Pius Anyim; one-time Anambra State Governor Peter Obi; industrialist Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa and a United States (U.S.)-based doctor, Nwachukwu Anakwenze.

Obi, who took his consultation to Edo State yesterday, called for sacrifice to move the country forward.

The aspirants have extended their campaigns to the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), the National Assembly Caucus, ex-ministers and the party’s Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.

Saraki, who is the spokesman for the consensus group, has continued to hinge the preference for the mode on the need to enthrone unity in the party.

However, there has been suspicion that the group might be pursuing a Northern agenda, based on the ethnic origin of its members.

Dismissing such insinuation, Saraki clarified that all the aspirants in the race at the point the group was formed were all from the North.

According to him, the group will be expanded to accommodate aspirants from other zones. The group has focused consultations primarily on PDP governors.

There was a mild drama during the consensus campaigners’ stopover in Enugu State.

Saraki had announced to reporters that Ugwuanyi had given his support to the consensus option before the governor clarified that he would only welcome the idea if it is based on justice equity and fairness.

Ugwuanyi said: “I welcome consensus based on justice, equity and fairness.”

When asked if he was making an inference to zoning with his demand for justice, equity, and fairness, Ugwuanyi retorted: “If that is what you think it is, so be it.”

The Enugu helmsman was one of the six PDP governors who insisted on the zoning of the PDP presidential ticket at a meeting in Abuja last Friday.

Despite Saraki’s explanations, the division between proponents of consensus and those campaigning for zoning has given ethnic colouration to the contest.

The Southeast aspirants, mindful of their obvious disadvantaged position in terms of delegate numbers, are fighting to have the ticket zoned to their region.

On the other hand, aspirants from the North, including the four pushing for consensus, are scrambling individually to grab the ticket.

They have been taking turns to meet with members of the BoT, the National Assembly Caucus, former cabinet Ministers and the leadership of the party.

Those that have met with these groups include Saraki, Tambuwal, Mohammed, Anyim, Obi, Governor Wike, Governor Udom Emmanuel, and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, among others.

During a meeting with the National Assembly Caucus last week, Wike promised to foot litigation bills for every member that might have legal challenges with their elections.

He told the lawmakers that he will engage the services of no fewer than 15 Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to handle legal services for those of them that support his aspiration.

Anyim, who met with the PDP leadership yesterday after he submitted his nomination documents, complained of unfair treatment of the Southeast and charged the party to address the situation.

PDP chair Iyorchia Ayu urged Anyim to intensify consultations among the various party stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones.

The party chair clarified that he and other members of the National Working Committee (NWC) are only umpires in the nomination process.

He urged Anyim and other aspirants to focus their consultations on those that will be delegates at the presidential primary.

I’m not for consensus, says Wike

The Rivers governor told an enthusiastic crowd of party supporters in Calabar not to take his presidential bid as a joke.

He said: “You may be hearing stories, but today I am coming here in person to tell you that I am running to be President of Nigeria.

“I am not running to negotiate for the vice presidency or for anything. I’m running to be the President of Nigeria.

“I’m not running for running’s sake; I do not want to be recognised as a former presidential candidate, but to win and become the president of Nigeria.”

Those who listened to Wike included former governors Donald Duke and Liyel Imoke; PDP national assembly Caucus leader and members from Cross River State and a host of others down to the party leaders in the local government areas in the state.

Referencing the pro-consensus group, Wike said: “Some people are moving for consensus. I’m not part of that. If you want to run an election, come and run an election.

“When they came to me, I told them I’m not a party to this one. What I don’t like in my life is deceiving people. What I will not do, I will not do. What I will do, I will do.

“I hear yesterday (Tuesday) what was credited to the former Senate President, Olusola Saraki, that the North came out first, so the South should concede to them; that is a lie and it is not correct; with due respect to our former Senate President.

“You can only know those who have come out for election at the close of nomination; or the close of picking of forms. I like what the Governor of Enugu State told them, he said consensus based on equity, fairness and justice.”

Stating that he was too experienced in politics to be deceived, Wike said: “If you can’t run again, say it out. Don’t hide under what you call consensus and come to me. Get on and run for the election; to be President of Nigeria is not by ‘dash’, you will sweat it out.”

“If PDP wants to win this election, look around, who has that capacity, who has that courage that can withstand this government, that can tell APC, enough is enough? I am the one.

“Give me the ticket. Give me the ticket and the election is over. PDP needs a candidate who is fearless and courageous. I will win the election for PDP.”

On his track record when he held the forth as Minister of State for Education, the governor said: “I toured every state. I addressed many issues of basic education and I got to ensure libraries and laboratories were built in secondary schools.”

Saraki: consensus candidate can come from South

Saraki told reporters after the meeting with Ugwuanyi that they discussed how to strengthen Nigeria’s unity.

He added that they also deliberated on the future of the PDP and the possibility of a consensus presidential candidate.

Saraki said the push by some PDP presidential aspirants for a consensus candidate for the 2023 polls was not a northern agenda.

He said: “When we started about three weeks ago, most of the aspirants we had then were mainly in the North. We were talking to the aspirants across the country. Now, more people have come out in the South and we are all going to meet.

“We are talking about Nigeria. We are not talking about the northern aspirants or southern aspirants.

“I have good news that already that moves are being made by the aspirants in the South to meet and produce a candidate through consensus that represents all the groups.

“So, I just want to be clear about that. Be reassured it is not about just the issue of a northern consensus, not at all. It’s a consensus for the PDP and one Nigeria.

“The most important ambition now is how to begin to fix Nigeria and put Nigeria on the right course.”

Obi: We must make sacrifices for better Nigeria

A PDP presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, said Nigerians must make sacrifices to overcome the nation’s current challenges.

He spoke at the Government House, Benin, while being hosted by Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki.

The former Anambra governor told the leaders and members of the party in the state that he was the best man for the job.

He said: “My aspiration is borne out of the fact that our country is going through a lot of challenges. We will need to all make sacrifices in building a better nation for our children.

“We need somebody who is conversant with the realities, because of the enormity of the problems besieging this country today.

“If the issues are not aggressively tackled from 2023, this country will not be there for all of us.”

Obi believes the foundation of development in a multi-ethnic and diverse society like Nigeria must be based on unity, fairness, love, respect, and inclusiveness.

Obaseki said Edo, as the heartbeat of Nigeria, would not be part of any arrangement that was not inclusive and equitable, stressing that the Southsouth state was interested in achieving a united and progressive Nigeria.

He said: “For us in Edo, it is about Nigeria first. Whatever we are doing politically must be one that will strengthen and preserve our country. Our view is that this country cannot be preserved and sustained if there is no fairness and equity.”

Remove me if I fail, says Anyim

Another presidential aspirant, Anyim Pius Anyim, urged Nigerians to remove him if he fails to perform after one year.

He spoke while addressing the party’s National Working Committee (NEC) after submitting his nomination form.

According to him, his vision is to build a Nigeria everyone would be proud of as he has the experience to make it happen having served as a Senate President and as Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“The only request I am placing on the table today is that if you give me the ticket of PDP to fly the flag of this party for the general election of 2023, I will go ahead to win the election.

“I will return to government as president of Nigeria and if I run this country for one year, and you don’t see the difference between light and darkness, you can recall me.

“From the vantage positions I have held, I understand the challenges confronting our nation today and I have clarity of what the solutions could be,” he said.

Senator Ayu said as of yesterday afternoon, 17 aspirants comprising 16 males and one female had obtained PDP nomination and expression of interest forms.

Ayu said that this showed the strength and popularity of the PDP as well as its acceptance among Nigerians ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He assured all the aspirants that the NWC would be transparent and neutral as an umpire, adding that the decision of who would emerge as flag bearer would be determined by ordinary members of the party.

Ayu enjoined all aspirants to work together for PDP to emerge victorious in 2023.

BREAKING: Bandits, Boko Haram now in alliance – FG

The Federal Government has revealed that the ongoing intense terrorist activities in the north, including the recent attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train, are being carried out by an alliance of bandits and Boko Haram elements.

It also revealed it is working at various levels to do everything possible to get victims of the train attack, who were abducted from the train by terrorists, out of captivity, even as it said it had the whole situation under control.

Responding to questions from correspondents after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, Minister of Defense, Maj. Gen. Bashir Magashi, and his Information and Culture counterpart, Lai Mohammed, said the government is not folding its arms in the face of the security crisis but explained that disclosing details of the action plan in the media would be counter-productive.

According to the Ministers, though security agencies are still working hard to unveil the group behind the attack, a preliminary report showed that the criminal groups were collaborating, urging Nigerians to also collaborate with the government to smoke the criminals out.

Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai had revealed that the attack on the train was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists, in collaboration with some bandits operating in Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto Niger and Kebbi States.

While responding to a question on whether government had identified those behind the attack, Magashi said: “Honestly, I think the security chiefs are working hard to unveil those that are involved, and we will tell you very soon those that are carrying out these attacks.

“Both attacks in Jos and Kaduna, we will come and explain to the public what is really going on and our efforts to ensure that all these activities are stopped once and for all. We are really on top of the situation, we are planning hard and we will get it out as soon as possible.”

Elaborating the situation, Mohammed said: “What is happening now is that there is a kind of an unholy handshake between bandits and Boko Haram insurgents.

“Preliminary reports of what transpired at the Kaduna train attacks show that there is a kind of collaboration between the bandits and the dislodged Boko Haram terrorists from the northeast. I can tell you very confidently that the Federal Government on the top of this matter.”

BREAKING: INEC disqualifies 106,280 voters in Ekiti, Osun

The completed registration of no fewer than 106,280 voters in Ekiti and Osun States have been declared invalid by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for flouting the guidelines stipulated for the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

In Ekiti State, a total of 40,234 new voters were registered out of which 17,640 were voided representing 43.9% of the completed registrations while in Osun State, 218,142 new registrations were completed, out of which 88,630 were invalidated, representing 40.6% of the total number of new voters.

INEC Chairman, who gave the statistics during a press conference at the Commission’s Headquarters, said the infraction happened in all the states of the Federation.

According to him, out of the 2,523,458 new registrations, 1,126,359, representing 44.6% were invalid, adding that the infraction which was uncovered while cleaning up the voter register, happened across the 36 states.

He said: “While the number of new registrants is very impressive and demonstrates the eagerness of Nigerians to vote in the forthcoming elections, the Commission has a duty to clean up the data to ensure that only eligible Nigerians are registered.

“As you are aware, the foundation for any credible election rests on the credibility of the Register of Voters. The introduction of the biometric registration of voters in 2011 has helped to sanitize the Register. You may recall that initially, 73,528,040 Nigerians were registered in 2011.

“Using the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), the Commission was able to remove 4,239,923 invalid registrations. Consequently, the Register of Voters for the 2015 General Election stood at 69,288,117 voters.

“Subsequently, some 432,173 new voters were added to the Register during the CVR exercises ahead of the off-cycle Governorship elections in five States (Bayelsa, Kogi, Edo, Ondo and Anambra) from late 2015 to early 2017, bringing the total number of registered voters in Nigeria to 69,720,350.”

The incident, he said, led to a protest but nobody was killed.

He said the situation had been brought under control by security operatives, adding that the motorcycle operator was seriously wounded and taken to the hospital in the area.

  • More appointees resign in states over Electoral Act

More appointees resign in states over Electoral Act

Agale of resignations is sweeping through states following governors’ directives to political appointees interested in vying for offices in next year’s general election to resign.

The governors are enforcing the provision of Section 84(12) of the amended Electoral Act which stipulates that appointees such as commissioners, special advisers and others should quit to be eligible to participate either as delegates or contestants at the convention of their political parties.

This is in spite of the ongoing legal battle on that clause of the Electoral Act.

Political parties have a June 3 cut off date to complete their primaries, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.

No less than 12 governors have asked their appointees to quit. And they have been complying.

Yesterday, eight appointees of the Ondo State government indicated interest to leave after Governor Rotimi Akeredolu issued a 48-hour ultimatum.

Two officials have resigned in Ogun State according to Commissioner for Information, Mr. Waheed Odusile.

Akeredolu’s directive, conveyed in a statement by Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Oladunni Odu, gave tomorrow as a deadline.

Names of the eight political appointees set to bow out were not made known but those who have begun subtle campaigns ahead of next year’s general election include Information Commissioner Donald Ojogo, who is eyeing the Ilaje/Ese-Odo Federal Constituency’s ticket; Special Adviser on Investment Boye Oyewumi, who is gunning for the Ondo South senatorial seat; Chairman of the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), Mr. Olumbe Akinkugbe, who has indicated an interest in the Ondo East/Ondo West Federal Constituency and Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora, Victor Ategbole, who is seeking to run for the Akoko Southwest/Akoko Southeast Federal Constituency.

Government sources also said some special assistants and aides to elected council chairmen might also resign.

    SGF unreachable

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha could not be reached yesterday for clarification on when federal appointees eyeing elective political offices would be asked to quit.

Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, who declared an interest at the weekend to succeed Presidential Muhammadu Buhari, began a nationwide consultation on Monday.

Other Federal Executive Council (FEC) members eyeing elective offices include Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami and Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige.

Malami is linked to interest in the governorship seat of Kebbi State.

Dr. Ngige is believed to be interested in taking a shot at the presidency.

    Kwara State

The Secretary to the Kwara State Government (SSG), Prof Mamman Jibril, has also told appointees nursing a political ambition to resign.

In a memo, the SSG directed all those concerned to submit their resignation letters not later than Friday.

    Directive expected in Osun State

it was learnt that Governor Adegboyega Oyetola may ask his aspiring political appointees to resign during the weekly State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting today.

A source said yesterday: “Governor Oyetola will be holding the weekly executive meeting with his exco member and he will give a directive in respect of 2023 general election.”

But Oyetola’s Commissioner for Intergovernmental Relation and Political Affairs Taiwo Akeju said: “The governor has not issued any directive to political appointees to resign.”

In Akwa Ibom, Governor Udom Emmanuel has directed aspiring appointees in his government to resign. A source in the Government House, Uyo, confirmed yesterday.

The Commissioner for information and Strategy, Iniobong Ememobong, however, said he was not aware of such a directive.

“I am not aware the governor issued the directive for his exco members with political aspirations to resign their appointments,” he told our reporter.

However, the source, who pleaded not to be named, said the governor during one of the weekly EXCO meetings in February, asked cabinet members with aspirations to resign.

So far, five commissioners have tendered their letters of resignation through the Secretary to State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem.

They are Pastor Umo Eno (Lands and Water Resources), Dr. Glory Edet (Agriculture); Mr. Akan Okon (Economic Development and Ibom Deep seaport); Mr. Okpulum Etteh (Special Duties and Prince Ukpong Akpabio (Trade and Investment).

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has also directed all political appointees interested in contesting to resign their appointments.

The directive was contained in a statement yesterday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chris Ezem.

The statement reads: “Pursuant to section 84(12) of the amended Electoral Act 2022.”

Also in Rivers, Governor Nyesom Wike directed those nursing political ambitions to resign.

It was gathered that the governor gave the directive during an EXCO meeting that was held at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

A source who was at the meeting, but spoke in confidence, said: “Wike was categorical when he gave the directive. The governor said it was in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.”

Already, SSG, Dr. Tammy Wenike Danagogo, has joined the governorship race. He has obtained the expression of intent and nomination forms for the forthcoming governorship primaries of the PDP.

    Lalong asks appointees to quit

Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong has directed appointees with the ambition to contest any public office to resign.

He said the decision was aimed at reducing to the barest, political distractions in governance and enabling such concerned public officers to focus on their aspirations as political activities to take centre stage in the state and the country.

His directive was contained in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of Plateau State Prof. Danladi Abok Atu and made available to reporters in Jos.

The letter, entitled: “Resignation of all political office holders wishing to contest the forthcoming political election”, reads in part: “As the countdown to the 2023 general elections draws nearer and in the face of the heightened political activities, it has become necessary for the government to provide a level playing ground for all political actors, especially those in the government to exercise their fundamental human rights.

“Consequently, I am to bring to the notice of all public officers occupying public offices under this administration that those interested and nursing political ambition to contest in the forthcoming 2023 general elections to resign their appointments on or before February 28, 2022.”

Lalong further explained that “the essence is to reduce to the barest, political distractions in governance and enable such concerned public officers to focus on their aspirations.”

He added that their resignations were in compliance with Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act 2022, stressing that the state was determined to abide by the tenets of Section 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2022.

Aniagwu said: “The electioneering process has begun with the release of the timetable by INEC and with the operationalisation of the Electoral Act, 2022 and this calls for a whole lot of engagements.

“For us as a state, we are very much determined to observe and indeed work according to the tenets of the Electoral Act.

“More specifically, we are very much determined to give effect to Section 84(12) which provides that those who are appointees of government who intend to take part in the electioneering process starting from the party primaries will have to give way by resigning their appointments.

“On account of that, a number of members of the State Executive Council who want to pursue their political careers through some elective positions have also put in their resignations.

“I can confirm to you that no fewer than nine of the Commissioners would be taking part in the 2023 general elections and that means that nine of them will no longer be part of our meetings as members of the state executive council.

“Three other persons, who have put in their resignations because they are statutory delegates and that is to tell you the extent to which we are giving effect to the provision of that law.”

In Ebonyi, Governor David Umahi gave his appointees and all political office holders the nod to start consultations and to declare their interest in various positions.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Oguwike Nwachuku, the governor said that “Imo State is a law-abiding state and the political appointees are also law-abiding and would abide with the provision of law on the Electoral Act.

“The state, people both in and out including appointees are law-abiding. We will abide by the position of law and that’s our position. So whatever the law demands we will abide because we are a law-abiding state.”

In Bayelsa, Governor Douye Diri had in January directed his appointees seeking political offices to resign.

Diri explained that such ambition was legitimate but it should not be at the expense of effective service delivery of his administration.

It was learnt that a number of appointees, including the Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Benson Agadaga, have resigned their appointments in compliance with the Governor’s directive.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Collins Cocodia, was quoted as saying that many appointees had resigned.

Sunday’s killing of over 80 persons was in Kanam and Wase villages in Plateau State by terrorists, who also reportedly kidnapped over 70 others and destroyed about 100 houses.

The busy federal highway from Makurdi, the state capital to Gboko, in Benue was blocked yesterday by restive youths who caused an over 10-hour gridlock while protesting the killings.

Tyortyu is a satellite town along the Makurdi-Gboko highway.

A member of the community who escaped the attack, Tersoo Utume, told The Nation that the gunmen stormed the sleepy community at about 2 am and went door to door, shooting and killing residents.

The youths dumped their bodies on the highway.

    the Plateau killings as hei

A statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Mallam Garba Shehu, says: “As full details emerge on the scale of the brutal terrorist attacks in Kanam and Wase communities in Plateau State, President Buhari has described the killings as heinous, saying that the perpetrators should not be allowed to escape justice. They should not be spared or forgiven.”

The President condoled with the victims, adding: “I urge all our citizens, the people of Plateau State, in particular, to expose the perpetrators of such incidents, their sponsors and those who encourage such criminals who carry out these dastardly acts of murder, so that the law will take its course.”

Governor Ortom deplored the killings, urging the people to defend themselves.

He said: “It is becoming increasingly glaring every day that my people are now an endangered specie.

“My people will have to rise to the occasion to defend themselves and their heritage against the army of occupation.

“We have been accommodating of other people in our land but our hospitality is misconstrued as weakness.

“We are not a conquered people. We will never be. We are free-born citizens of Nigeria.”
