BREAKING: Protests in Jos over Plateau killings

Fresh protests broke out in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Monday over the persistent killings of indigenous residents by suspected Fulani militants.

The demonstrations, which were led by Christian leaders including Plateau chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Polycarp Lubo, began at the Fawvwei Junction community road, causing significant traffic gridlock and leaving commuters stranded.

The protest follows a recent surge in violent attacks on communities in Plateau with more than 100 people reportedly killed in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government Areas over the past two weeks.

“We are not happy over the continuous attacks and killings by gunmen in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings,” one of the protesters, Gyang Dalyop, said.

BREAKING: Pope Francis dies at 88

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025 at 88.

He died at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, announced the death of Pope Francis from the Casa Santa Marta.

He said: “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.

“He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

The Pope was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2025 after suffering from a bout of bronchitis for several days. Pope Francis’ clinical situation gradually worsened, and his doctors diagnosed bilateral pneumonia on Tuesday, February 18. After 38 days in hospital, the late Pope returned to his Vatican residence at the Casa Santa Marta to continue his recovery. In 1957, in his early 20s, Jorge Mario Bergoglio underwent surgery in his native Argentina to remove a portion of his lung that had been affected by a severe respiratory infection. As he aged, Pope Francis frequently suffered bouts of respiratory illnesses, even cancelling a planned visit to the United Arab Emirates in November 2023 due to influenza and lung inflammation.

In April 2024, the late Pope Francis approved an updated edition of the liturgical book for papal funeral rites, which will guide the funeral Mass which has yet to be announced. The second edition of the Ordo Exsequiarum Romani Pontificis introduces several new elements, including how the Pope’s mortal remains are to be handled after death. The ascertainment of death takes place in the chapel, rather than in the room where he died, and his body is immediately placed inside the coffin.

According to Archbishop Diego Ravelli, Master of Apostolic Ceremonies, the late Pope Francis had requested that the funeral rites be simplified and focused on expressing the faith of the Church in the Risen Body of Christ. “The renewed rite,” said Archbishop Ravelli, “seeks to emphasise even more that the funeral of the Roman Pontiff is that of a pastor and disciple of Christ and not of a powerful person of this world.”

  • Plateau, Benue killings: State Police back on front burner

Plateau, Benue killings: State Police back on front burner

    • Issue may return to NEC agenda this week
    • Senators developing legal framework

The resurgence of violent killings in Plateau and Benue states in the last month has brought back to the front burner the vexed issue of state police.

The Senate, on resumption from recess next week, will put a framework to the idea, according to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.

The issue is also expected to be on the agenda of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting this week.

NEC, chaired by the Vice President, is made up of governors and a few other federal officials.

At its December 12, 2024, meeting, it was announced that all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had indicated readiness to embrace state police.

Against the expectations of Nigerians, however, NEC’s February meeting – its only one so far this year – did not discuss state police – at least not on the communiqué released to the media.

Also yesterday, Serving Overseer of Citadel Global Community Church (formerly Latter Rain), Pastor Tunde Bakare, advocated the formation of zonal security councils and decentralisation of policing.

Two security experts also proffered community involvement and police independence as a panacea to the killings.

Former Senate President David Mark gave a range of suggestions to end the killings.

Bamidele called on security agencies to apprehend and prosecute those perpetrating killings, kidnappings and destruction of property in parts of the country.

He said: “The recent killings in Benue and Plateau states outright negated the virtues of peace and love that Jesus Christ taught.

“The recurrent utterances by some political and sectional figures also belied the values of courage, perseverance and tolerance He evidently lived for.

“No country develops as a result of one section rising up against another and vice versa.

“While the authority of the National Assembly is in the process of developing legal frameworks for the establishment of state police as one of the measures to address insecurity in the country, we urge security agencies to work together as a team to track and apprehend all the masterminds and sponsors of terror attacks nationwide.

“We appeal to some political actors who always latch onto the country’s challenges to push divisive narratives to learn from the example of Jesus Christ.

“Such actors are no longer playing opposition politics, but simply taking advantage of the country’s internal conditions in the pursuit of their own parochial political outcomes.

“Regardless of their ethnicity, politics and religion, all actors should shun all forms of divisive utterance and join forces against the common foes of Nigeria and not subvert our effort to build a strong and virile federation.”

    Zonal security

Bakare, who expressed concern over the spate of killings, abductions and other crimes, called for the decentralisation of the policing system and the formation of zonal security councils.

In his state of the nation address in Lagos yesterday, the cleric noted that the surge in security concerns, including the recent killing of hundreds of residents in Plateau and Benue states, required a new approach to tame.

He said: “We must then reinstate national security federalism by activating constitutional procedures for multilevel policing, including local, state, and zonal policing systems.

“Against this backdrop, we must redesign our security architecture by facilitating the formation of zonal security councils, chaired by a governor from the respective zone on a rotating basis.

“Such councils, which will be formed by state and local policing systems within respective zones, must be managed by nonpartisan security experts, while the Chairperson at each point in time will represent the zone at the National Security Council.

“These steps would be further boosted by adequately retooling our security infrastructure to meet the complex demands and by remodelling our security infrastructure to end interagency rivalry.

“We must also recreate our national security culture by mandating the kind of organisational culture change within the entire gamut of our law enforcement agencies that can win back the trust of the people.”

    Stringent measures

Senator Mark called on the Federal Government to be more proactive in its efforts to tackle the menace of violent crimes, kidnapping and armed herdsmen.

He suggested that such violent and murderous groups should be declared terrorists and treated as such.

Mark bemoaned the unabating violent crimes, especially in the Northcentral states of Plateau and Benue.

A statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja quoted Mark as saying: “We must not shy away from the truth. If they are not terrorists, why are they killing people? Why are they destroying communities? Why are they chasing people away from their ancestral homes?”

Decrying the unending activities of armed herders suspected to be behind killings and kidnappings, Mark said: “Their activities are unacceptable and should not only be condemned but be prohibited in their entirety as nobody has the right to take anybody’s life.”

On the attacks on several communities in Benue and Plateau states, the senator called on the Federal Government to proscribe open grazing in all parts of the country.

The former Senate President, whose home town in Benue State was under attack, called for a more inclusive approach to tackle insecurity in all ramifications.

Mark also called for the establishment of a well-equipped Border Security Forces (BSF) to halt the influx of criminals into Nigeria, pointing out that most of the suspected killer-herders “took advantage of the porosity of our borders by streaming into the country”.

Tinubu, Tchiani meet soon over Nigeria-Niger ties

    • Tuggar signs agreements with Nigerien counterpart

After over 20 months of diplomatic strain, Nigeria and the Republic of Niger are set to restore full ties, Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar and Nigerien counterpart Bakary Yaou Sangare hinted at the weekend.

Tuggar gave indication of a likely meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerien President, Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani soon, to seal restoration of ties.

Already, key bilateral relations have been resuscitated as Ambassador Tuggar and Sangare signed agreements last week during Tugar’s visit.

Following a spat on the July 2023 coup, the Republic of Niger on August 4, 2023 suspended diplomatic relationship with Nigeria.

The borders of the two nations were shut, leading to economic losses and untold hardship for citizens on the border of bother countries.

Niger is Nigeria’s Northern neighbor, its citizens and Nigerians in Sokoto, Kano, Jigawa and Katsina have ethnic and religious affinity.

The sanctions also impaired the security of the two nations, especially the heightening Boko Haram insurgency and the emergence of Lakurawa terrorists.

Niger is also a member of the Alliance of Sahel States, which include Burkina Faso and Mali, both of them being led by military juntas.

But after many interventions and diplomatic shuttles by eminent Nigerians, including a former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, issues have been resolved.

Asked yesterday if there was any hope of normalising relationship, Tuggar simply said: “Absolutely.”

He expanded more on the Hausa Service of DW after a meeting with the Nigerien Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sangare.

He said: “Thank God we are here, in a place we call home, which every Nigerian and Nigerien knows well. We received a warm welcome, and we are grateful for that.

“We had extensive discussions, resulting in a signed agreement between both nations. The contents are significant, especially in today’s uncertain world.”

Pressed to disclose the contents of the agreement, Tuggar added: “The agreement covers regular meetings to discuss issues like insecurity, healthcare, transportation, train stations, roads, CNG vehicles to facilitate movement from northern Nigeria to Niger Republic.

“It also includes reviving the 1971 offices for bilateral relations and reinstating initiatives like the 1989 meetings between governors, kings, and local officials.

The minister gave assurance that the dispute between the two nations has been resolved.

“Our presence and engagement as Foreign Ministers from both nations says it all,” Tuggar said.

On the expectations that a parley between leaders of both countries would solidify the relationship, Tuggar said: “Their meeting is well underway, we just have to exercise patience.”

Sangare said the diplomatic row was over.

He said: “What happened between Nigeria and Niger Republic in the last one and a half years or 20 months is  not peculiar to us.

“The important thing is that we have put differences behind us.

“Nigerians are our brothers. Whoever wants to cause disunity know they will not succeed. We have settled our differences, for the bond is God-made, and no one can separate it.

“My prayer is that we implement all we have discussed, and may this mark the end of misunderstandings between ourselves and our brothers in Nigeria.”

    • CAN, Methodist Prelate, Kukah reflect on state of nation

Pope Francis, recovering from an ailment that kept him in the hospital for two months, yesterday greeted Christians from his window at the Vatican in Rome to mark Easter.

He also received United States Vice President JD Vance.

A large crowd turned up for Easter celebration and to listen to the Pope’s “Urbi et Orbi” speech, which was read on his behalf by an Archbishop.

The speech emphasized the need for peace across the troubled countries.

In Nigeria Christians Marked the Easter Day with church services in an atmosphere of peace across the states.

Leaders of various denominations also spoke on the need for peace in the country and a stop to the carnage in Plateau and Benue in the last four weeks.

Archbishop Diego Ravelli delivered the Pope’s homily Urbi et Orbi, which translates as “to the city [Rome] and to the world,” is among the pope’s most significant messages and is delivered most notably on Christmas and Easter.

It is traditionally solemn and addresses pressing global issues beyond religious matters, reflecting the global diplomatic influence of the pontiff.

“There can be no peace without freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of expression and respect for the views of others,” Francis wrote in his speech.

“Nor is peace possible without true disarmament! The requirement that every people provide for its own defence must not turn into a race to rearmament.”

Addressing each of the global conflicts, Francis first lambasted the “crowing climate of anti-semitism” throughout the world in response to the war in Gaza before calling for a ceasefire to end the war and facilitate the return of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

“Yet at the same time, I think of the people of Gaza, and its Christian community in particular, where the terrible conflict continues to cause death and destruction and to create a dramatic and deplorable humanitarian situation,” Francis wrote.

On Palm Sunday, last week, a hospital in Gaza was struck by the Israeli military prompting widespread condemnation by Christian groups across the region.

Meanwhile, the collapse of Syria’s Assad regime and Israel’s dismantling of Hezbollah have upended power dynamics across the Levant, forcing Lebanon and Syria into a new phase of cautious diplomacy after decades of Syrian political and military influence over Lebanon.

But the power vacuum has also led to renewed clashes near the border, as local militias, tribal groups and remnants of Assad loyalists vie for control. Pope Francis acknowledged the precarious moment facing Christian communities in both countries, urging Catholics to pray for their safety and inclusion in political life.

The pope likewise called for a solution in Yemen, which has been plagued by a years-long and complex multi-fronted civil war between the Saudi- and U.S.-backed internationally recognized government and Iran-backed Houthi rebels, which in-turn support Hamas and Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation.

The war also involves UAE-supported southern separatists, tribal militias and extremist groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS, and has led to a catastrophic humanitarian crisis with widespread famine, disease and displacement. In his message, Francis urged “constructive dialogue” to “find solutions” and end the crisis.

The pope also again praised Armenia and Azerbaijan for agreeing to the final text of a peace agreement, which was reached in mid-March, but has since faced potential hurdles that may hinder the deal from being signed.

“During this time, let us not fail to assist the people of Myanmar, plagued by long years of armed conflict, who, with courage and patience, are dealing with the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Sagaing,” Francis wrote.

“We pray for the victims and their loved ones, and we heartily thank all the generous volunteers carrying out the relief operations. The announcement of a ceasefire by various actors in the country is a sign of hope for the whole of Myanmar.”

The Catholic head met briefly with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance to exchange Easter greetings, after they got into a long-distance tangle over the Trump administration’s migrant deportation plans.

Francis received Vance in one of the reception rooms of the Vatican hotel where he lives. The 88-year-old pope offered the Catholic vice president three big chocolate Easter eggs for Vance’s three young children, who did not attend, as well as a Vatican tie and rosaries.

“I know you have not been feeling great but it’s good to see you in better health,” Vance told the pope. “Thank you for seeing me.”

Vance’s motorcade entered Vatican City through a side gate while Easter Mass was being celebrated in St. Peter’s Square.

    CAN seeks unity, dialogue

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) urged Nigerians to always promote unity, dialogue and reconciliation in the country.

CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, in his Easter message, advised Christians to remain strong in the face of challenges.

Okoh urged Christians to use this Easter season as a time for deep reflection, earnest prayer, and spiritual renewal.

The CAN president said: “On behalf of the national leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), I extend heartfelt greetings to all Christians in Nigeria and across the world. This is a moment of deep spiritual significance as we commemorate the resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

“Let us strengthen our bonds of fellowship, extend compassion to those in need, and strive to build a more just and caring society. This Easter, let us be intentional in acts of kindness and charity, reaching out to the marginalized and the suffering. “Let us also promote dialogue and reconciliation, working towards greater unity within our communities and across the nation. In the spirit of Easter, may we reach out to neighbors of other faiths, fostering mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. “

May this season be one of harmony and goodwill for all Nigerians. May it inspire us to live out the values of love, peace, and forgiveness in our everyday lives.

“As we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Lord, may our hearts be filled with the message of victory that it brings to strengthen us in the face of adversity.”

    Kukah: Tinubu should end killings

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah urged President Tinubu to salvage Nigerians from killings and suffering.

Kukah in his 2025 Easter message titled: ‘Mr President: Please, bring us down from this cross’, said the country is bleeding from savagery and brutality.

He said: “Every day, innocent citizens are kidnapped and held under the most inhuman conditions.

“A dark pall of death hangs languidly from north to south. It is impossible to find a home, a family, or a community that has not been caught in the cusp of this savagery.

“Mr President, Nigeria is reaching a breaking point. The nation is gradually becoming a huge national morgue. With a greater sense of urgency, hasten to bring us down from this cross of evil”.

Kakah said while Tinubu is not the cause, he should act to stop the menace, adding that “Nigerians have been dangling and bleeding on this cross of pain and mindless suffering for too long.

He added: “A culture of cynicism and self-doubt over our capacity to secure peace for ourselves pervades our land. Indeed, a majority of our citizens feel that there is no hope in sight”.

Kukah said Christians must still hold on to hope and look up to the cross as a source of strength and renewal.

He stressed: “These times of great suffering should be times of hope, hope beyond human imagination — a hope which, as St. Paul assures us, does not disappoint.”

    Methodist Prelate: Benue needs peace

The Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, urged the Federal Government to take proactive and decisive action in tackling the lingering insecurity in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of the country.

He said in his Easter  message at Trinity Methodist Church, Tinubu, Lagos State that the continuous killings in Plateau and Benue should stop.

Rev. Aba, who is an indigene of Benue State, said: “Even I, who is standing before you, I am seriously affected. I come from Benue, and what is happening there is heartbreaking,”

He described the killing of over 100 people in the Boko area and disturbances in Otobi-Akpa reflected a disturbing societal detachment from the value of human life.

Rev. Aba said: “The problem I have with society is that nobody seems to be conscious of life anymore. When people are killed, we ask ‘how many?’ As if even one life lost doesn’t matter.”

He said Nigeria’s population is a strategic national asset, particularly in terms of economic relevance on the global stage. Every life, he insisted, is valuable and must be protected

While affirming the role of the nation’s security agencies, Rev. Aba challenged citizens to take responsibility for the safety of their communities.

He added: “Security is not only the job of security agencies. You and I are also part of Nigeria’s security architecture. We must all be vigilant, report suspicious movements, and protect our neighborhoods.”

While acknowledging that the socio-economic and security situations across the country remain troubling, Aba expressed confidence in divine intervention.

He emphasized that with faith and vigilance, the nation can overcome its difficulties.

“The society is not too comfortable,” he said. “But with God, all things are possible. Our situation can change for the better. If He has done it for the people of old, He will do it for us too.”

    APC prays  for Tinubu

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)  prayed for divine strength and wisdom for President Tinubu in his determination to tackle and overcome the socio-economic challenges confronting our  nation.

The National Publicity Secretary,  Felix Morka, in a statement in Abuja, enjoined Nigerians to embrace hope, patience, sacrifice, and resilience exhibited by Jesus Christ.

The statement reads: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) rejoices with Nigerians, especially Christians, on the joyous occasion of Easter celebration.

“Easter, the joyful end of the Lenten season of fasting and penitence, is core to the Christain faith as it commemorates  the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It symbolizes God’s eternal triumph over death and the power of light over darkness.

“As we celebrate, we enjoin Nigerians to embrace hope, patience, sacrifice, and resilience, some of the priceless values and virtues immanent in Jesus’ death and resurrection.

“We join Christians in prayer that the transformative blessings of Easter abide with all Nigerians, strengthen  President Bola Tinubu in his determination to tackle and overcome outstanding socio-economic challenges confronting our  nation.

“May the worthy example of Christ inspire us to extend love and kindness to the needy and less-privileged as we remain steadfast in prayer for peace, security, unity and sustained progress of our beloved nation.

“And may God continue to bless and protect our troops in the frontlines as they defend our freedoms and our homeland,” the party prayed.

PDP preaches optimism, hope for national rebirth

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urged Nigerians to renew their hope in the assurance of God’s unfailing love and intervention in the affairs of the country and humanity.

The party, in a statement in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, felicitated Nigerians on the occasion of the Easter.

Ologunagba enjoined Nigerians to use the period of the Easter, which signifies the ultimate triumph of God’s saving grace over adverse circumstances, to reawaken their determination and hope for the much desired national rebirth as solution for the hardship, insecurity and other challenges facing the nation.

He said: “The coming of Easter must redirect us as a nation to the imperatives of the virtues of forgiveness, forbearance and mutual respect.

“Obedience to the rule of law and love for one another without regard to sectional, tribal, religious or political considerations, as this is the only way our nation can survive this challenging time.”

Ologunagba urged leaders to use the occasion for deeper introspection and rededicate themselves to a life of selfless service.

Group decries poor state of infrastructure in A’Ibom public schools

The Ukanafun-Oruk Anam Integrity Alliance, a socio-political organisation, has raised alarm over the deteriorating state of public schools in Ukanafun and Oruk Anam local government areas of Akwa Ibom State.

In a communique signed by its director general, Twoweeks Umoh, and Secretary, Utip Etiebet, the group expressed concern over the lack of basic facilities in many schools, including missing roofs, desks, inadequate teachers, and a general lack of commitment from educators.

A copy of the communique was obtained by our correspondent over the weekend.

The Alliance urged the state government to take immediate action, calling for the renovation of classrooms, provision of desks and learning materials, and deployment of qualified manpower, including an inspectorate team, to improve the quality of education in the region.

The group also highlighted the health risks and negative impact on learning caused by the poor conditions of the schools, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the situation.

Additionally, the Alliance called on the two legislators representing Ukanafun and Oruk Anam constituencies in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Emem Udom and Sampson Idiong, to present their scorecards.

They stressed that such an initiative would provide an organized platform for the legislators to showcase their contributions to lawmaking and development in their constituencies.

“It is also reasoned that the constituency briefings will also serve as feedback avenues, as the people will have the opportunity of appraising their respective lawmakers, as well as offer their takes on how best the lawmakers should serve their interests.”

BREAKING: Tunde Onakoya breaks Guiness record for longest chess marathon

Chess master and founder of Chess in Slums Africa,Tunde Onakoya, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.

Alongside U.S. chess master Shawn Martinez, Onakoya surpassed the previous record of 61 hours, reaching an impressive 62 hours.

Their ultimate goal is to extend the marathon beyond 70 hours.

Onakoya on X, wrote: “For all the dreamers! We’ve officially broken the record!

“If you had 70 hours to change the world, what would you do? Sometimes, you have to carve it out of your own breath, your own becoming. Not for applause. Not for records. But for the quiet dreamers who need to see someone leap—so they know it’s possible to fly.

“Every move, every hour, a love letter to children who’ve never known the luxury of a second chance. If your heart has ever burned for something bigger than yourself, come find us. Stand with us.”

The chess marathon, which began on April 17 in Times Square, New York City, is not just about setting a new record; it’s a noble endeavor to raise awareness and funds for a worthy cause.

Onakoya’s initiative aims to build Nigeria’s largest free school for homeless children, providing them with educational opportunities and a chance at a better life.

Throughout the marathon, Onakoya has shared inspiring messages, emphasising the importance of perseverance and dedication.

He has also used the platform to raise awareness about the plight of underprivileged children and the need for support.

In April 2024, he completed a 60-hour marathon alongside Martinez, surpassing the previous record of 56 hours set in 2018.

However, the achievement was short-lived, as a pair of Norwegian players set a new record of 61 hours just two months later.

Now, a year later, Onakoya and Martinez are back, determined to reclaim the title and set a new world record.

    • Dare: President will win next election comfortably

    • Labour Party disowns ex-Obi’s running mate

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule yesterday declared that the North would not waver in its support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The North, the governor insisted, would not pander to the whims and caprices of a few who want to equate their personal interest with that of the majority of the people of the region.

Governor Sule spoke on a day the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, said Tinubu would be re-elected comfortably regardless of “the volume of armchair theories and political conspiracies” by opponents.

The President’s performance ‘will clear the path,” Dare said.

Speaking at the 2025 Nzeh Mada Festival in Akwanga, Akwanga Local Government Area of the state yesterday, Gov. Sule said it had become imperative for the North to work towards the actualisation of Tinubu’s return in 2027.

According to him, supporting the President’s re-election would be a fulfillment of the promise the region’s leaders made ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Sule, who doubles as Chairman, North Central Governors Forum, said the North is not known for reneging on its promise.

He urged North’s stakeholders to disregard the agitation of a few politicians who are bent on causing confusion in the polity on account of their failed personal ambition.

He said the same politicians were among the region’s leaders who sold Tinubu’s candidacy to the people in 2023.

He said: “Some politicians will always create confusion if they fail to get what they want or achieve their targets.

“As a junior governor then, some of the older governors told us that the best person for the presidency was Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“They told us Tinubu can transform Nigeria the same way he made Lagos an epicenter of business and commerce.

“It was a challenging period but we worked hard to bring Tinubu into office.

“Today, the same people, because they couldn’t get what they were looking for, are criticising Tinubu; that he is the worst President Nigeria has ever produced.

“Well, whether he is the good, the bad or the ugly, by the grace of God, we are bringing back Bola Ahmed Tinubu to continue as president of Nigeria.”

He said the North made a firm commitment that having been in the presidency for eight years, the South should have its turn.

“So, we cannot do the contrary. We cannot say something today and say another tomorrow.

“So, we have to be patient and support the President to do his eight years in office,” he noted.

Only last Wednesday, prominent members of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc in the All Progressives Congress (APC) pledged their support for the Tinubu administration and its policies.

They also pledged loyalty to the APC.

Former Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the only elected CPC governor; former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, who was House of Representatives Speaker, and Minister of Education in the Muhammadu Buhari Administration, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, signed a communiqué after a meeting of the CPC bloc, along with 20 others.

It was in reaction to the switch by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a member of the CPC bloc, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) last month.

Similarly, the North Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM) has expressed support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls.

Chairperson of the movement, Prof. Nghargbu K’tso, during a visit to Governor Sule in Lafia on Friday, also advocated that the North Central Zone should produce the President after 2027.

He said the zone has suffered marginalization since the country’s independence.

According to him, only the North Central geopolitical zone is yet to produce a democratic president since Nigeria got her independence about 65 years ago.

Tinubu will win comfortably in 2027, says Dare

Dare said on his X account @SundayDareSD yesterday that Tinubu has performed well so far  to deserve re-election.

He was reacting to the Friday interview by the Labour Party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed on Arise Television.

Baba-Ahmed had claimed that he did not see the President getting re-elected because, according to him, Nigerians would demand a shift towards true democracy by 2027.

Dare dismissed Baba Ahmed’s remarks as illogical and lacking substance.

His words: “Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed’s ‘illogical logic’ was all over the place in his recent interview with a television channel. He peddled arguments that were flawed, devoid of reason and empty.

“He must have as well dropped from space, going by what he spewed out during the interview.

“Listening to Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed spurn his postulations about the political future of Nigeria and that of the incumbent President is like listening to the new year predictions of charlatan ‘prophets’ which never come true.

“Yusuf Baba Ahmed and his co-traveller Peter Obi are indeed a ‘double whammy’ in the Nigerian political space.

“If listening to a Peter Obi interview was a punishment, listening to Baba-Ahmed, his defunct running mate, is a torment.

“His political logic is not fit for even a first-year Political Science class, and even then, they will query his postulations.

“He chose to base his political calculations on President Bola Tinubu not winning a second term given his antecedents and because Nigerians will decide at the polls among other things.

“He conveniently avoided the substance of performance and capacity.

“Unfortunately, he chose to walk into a lane he was unfamiliar with and chose to confront a politician he is no match for.

“If theories could fly, Yusuf Baba Ahmed and all the other Presidential Wannabes (PW) could have become President since.

“But Politics is not for theorists or the faint hearted nor the parochial.

“Politics is for those with a solid track record of performance, the courageous, far-sighted and gifted. Qualities he clearly lacks.

“Another thing Baba Ahmed lacks is the capacity for honesty, because that is the only way to describe his claim that President Tinubu is not fulfilling his campaign promises.

“The positive impacts of the tough choices the President Tinubu has made in the interest of the country are already being felt, and the economic indices are there to prove this.

“Even the IMF recently acknowledged – ‘Tinubu’s Reforms have put the economy in a better position to navigate this external environment’ – Schimmelpfennig.

“In 2027, Baba Ahmed and the other PWs will need all the marines available to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who in about two years has demonstrated his capacity to govern and to re-engineer Nigeria in a way hitherto unknown.

“Tinubu will win comfortably in 2027, no matter the volume of armchair theories and political conspiracies. His performance will clear the path.

“So, instead of running the circuit of television networks to peddle his poorly thought-out conjectures, Baba Ahmed should seriously consider how to rehabilitate his failed political career; an intervention he urgently needs.

“And if Datti Baba-Ahmed is smart, he will simply keep quiet and leave politics for those equipped for that complicated art.”

Labour Party dissociates self from Baba-Ahmed’s statement

A faction of the Labour Party condemned Baba-Ahmed’s description of the Tinubu’s government as ‘questionably constitutional’.

National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Dr. Arabambi Abayomi, said in Kaduna that the party viewed the comment as undemocratic and capable of inciting Nigerians against the government.

Abayomi said that the LP approached the 2023 general election with all determination to make a difference in the way Nigeria is run, and sponsored candidates it believed at the time had the capacity to win elections for the party.

He said the result of that Presidential election declared didn’t go its way and the party challenged the result up to the Supreme Court and lost.

“For the interest and peace of the nation, the Labour Party accepted the judgment of the Supreme Court, not because we were pleased but because of the FINALITY of the Supreme Court’s judgment.

“The party has since moved on,” he said.

Abayomi spoke of LP’s shock at Baba Ahmed’s reference to the 2023 presidential election at a meeting in Abuja as ‘questionably constitutional’ even with the legitimacy conferred on the Tinubu government by the Supreme Court.

He said:”For us in the Labour Party, this statement is clearly inciting and a call for mass action against a constituted authority.

“We think there should be a limit to whipping up public sentiments against a legitimate government.

“The Arab Spring that rattled the entire Middle East started when the Arab leaders paid no attention to Bouazizi’s subtle but persistent galvanisation of the youths against their governments, leading into the mass demonstrations, revolts and revolutions that almost consumed the region.

“Recall that Baba-Ahmed while refusing to concede victory in the 2023 presidential election also alleged that the Tinubu government harboured a grand scheme to dismember Nigeria into six possibly autonomous zones and that the administration has thrown Nigerians into untold hardship, all in efforts to weep up sentiments against the government.

“Nigeria is presently passing through a dangerous and precarious phase, and it is expected that every well-meaning Nigerian should realise the fragility of the nation, put politics aside and help to move the nation out of the woods.

“The leadership of Labour Party wishes to state clearly that it is within the right of every Nigerian to hold the government accountable for its inability to live up to the expectation.

“However, statements that are inciting and capable of plunging the nation into unwarranted combustion, particularly by the political class, must be avoided.

“The Labour Party under the able leadership of Barr. Julius Abure therefore wishes to completely dissociate itself from the unfortunate and reprehensible comments by its former vice presidential candidate.

“Similarly, the party also viewed the comment by the Abia State governor, Dr. Alex Otti of a possible ‘dooms day’ awaiting the Barr. Julius Abure’s led leadership as a direct threat to the lives of the party executive members.

“As if Labour Party is his personal company, Governor Otti at the illegal meeting on Wednesday 9th April, 2025 boasted that Abure refused an offer of the Chairmanship of the Board of Trustees of the party and that he was ready to ‘fumigate Abure and his team out of office’.

“He also threatened that the ‘dooms day’ is imminent. The party is therefore warning that no harm should befall any of the party’s leaders as a result of the imminent doom that the governor has threatened.

“This threat is coming a few days after a similar threat by the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajero to mobilise arms men to ‘flush’ the leadership out of our offices across the nation.

“We believe that these threats are not coincidental in any way as it is a known fact that NLC’s rascality is equally being funded by the Abia State Government.

“We are therefore by this statement notifying Nigerians, particularly the National Security Adviser (NSA), to come to our aid as our lives are clearly in danger and we no longer feel safe.”

VP was never denied access to presidential villa – Spokesperson

The spokesperson of Vice-President Kashim Shettima, Mr Stanley Nkwocha, yesterday debunked reports that armed military units denied the Vice-President access to the Presidential Villa.

In a statement in Abuja, Nkwocha said the publication was a story so far removed from reality.

According to him, such misinformation can only be entertained by those unfamiliar with the inner workings of the Nigerian government.

Nkwocha, therefore, urged the public to disregard such malicious publications and advised the media to continue to seek information from credible sources and approach sensational claims with the caution it deserves.

“This we owe ourselves collectively as a nation,” he said.

Nkwocha noted that in recent times, there has been deliberate and well-planned orchestration of falsehood against the Vice President’s person and office in many multidimensional forms.

“These mischievous and totally fabricated reports are all in a bid to cause confusion and insinuate total clash in the Presidency.

” These reports seek to mislead the public into believing there’s discord at the highest levels of government.

“The latest in this string of disinformation is a report claiming that the Vice-President has been refused entry to the Villa.

“This is a feeble attempt to traduce the person and office of His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima. For the record, NOTHING OF THE SORT EVER HAPPENED.

“The recent publication by some obscure blogs alleging that armed military units have barricaded the Vice President from accessing the Presidential Villa is not only the wildest expression of wishful thinking.

“(It’s) a clear indication that the purveyors of these tales have exhausted both ink and imagination.”

Nkwocha said earlier this week, the Presidency dismissed similar fake news regarding responsibility for the circulation of campaign posters bearing the images of President Bola Tinubu.

“These stories reflect a desperate attempt to undermine the President and his Deputy’s fidelity to the rule of law and our constitution.

“Let it be known that those pushing these falsehoods do so in vain.

”It is understandable, though regrettable, that the mischief-makers continue to underestimate the strength of the bond and goodwill between the President and the Vice President.

“However, their questionable sources or habitual reliance on misinformation have once again led them astray.

“These fairy tales they publish serve no purpose beyond mischief and distraction.”

He said that Shettima remains focused on his duties and on supporting the President in achieving the aspirations of Nigerians.

“He does not have the luxury of time for distractions, particularly those born of the imagination of individuals intent on creating smoke where there is no fire.

“He’s not and will never partake in their media circus. It is a futile pursuit, even by the standards of the morally indifferent.”
