  • Reported access denial to Shettima ‘totally fabricated’-Presidency

Reported access denial to Shettima ‘totally fabricated’-Presidency

The Presidency has firmly denied recent media reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima was denied access to the Presidential Villa, describing the claims as “mischievous” and “totally fabricated.”

In a statement on Saturday by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the Presidency condemned the reports as part of a “deliberate and well-planned orchestration of falsehood” aimed at sowing discord within the top echelon of government.

“The latest in this string of disinformation is a report claiming that the Vice President has been refused entry to the Villa. For the record, nothing of the sort ever happened”, the statement read.

Nkwocha described the claims, reportedly originating from obscure blogs, as “a feeble attempt to traduce the person and office of His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima.”

He characterised the story of armed military units blocking the Vice President’s access to the seat of power as “the wildest expression of wishful thinking” and “a clear indication that the purveyors of these tales have exhausted both ink and imagination.”

According to the statement, the Vice President continues to discharge his duties with diligence and remains focused on supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in realizing the aspirations of the Nigerian people.

“He does not have the luxury of time for distractions, particularly those born of the imagination of individuals intent on creating smoke where there is no fire,” it said.

This is not the first time the Presidency has responded to what it describes as “fake news.”

Earlier in the week, it similarly dismissed reports involving the circulation of campaign posters bearing the images of President Tinubu, labeling them as baseless and politically motivated.

Nkwocha emphasised that the unity and cooperation between the President and the Vice President remain strong, despite repeated attempts by what he called “mischief-makers” to drive a wedge between them.

“It is understandable, though regrettable, that the mischief-makers continue to underestimate the strength of the bond and goodwill between the President and the Vice President. These fairy tales they publish serve no purpose beyond mischief and distraction,” he said.

He also praised Nigerians who have chosen to resist the spread of misinformation and who continue to stand behind the Tinubu-Shettima administration.

“We commend Nigerians across all divides who continue to express goodwill towards this administration and who have taken it upon themselves to fight the spread of fake news. Your trust and support are deeply appreciated,” the statement added.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to constitutional governance and transparency, Nkwocha urged media practitioners to seek information from credible sources and to handle sensational claims with due caution.

“No amount of falsehood or manufactured tension can shake the foundation of the democratic mandate that brought this government to power. Not under the watch of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, he asserted.

He however called for unity and vigilance in the face of continued attempts to destabilize the nation through disinformation.

From President Bola Tinubu yesterday came a directive for the Armed Forces and other security agencies to end insecurity across the country “decisively and without delay.”

Tinubu, in his Easter message to Nigerians, said the tide was already turning against the brains behind the security challenge while “steady progress in reclaiming peace and stability” was being made “with the unwavering courage and commitment of our gallant men and women in uniform.”

The directive comes in the wake of the recent surge in incidents and loss of lives in parts of the country.

He sympathised with citizens affected by the violence and unrest, saying he understood the pain and fear such events have caused.

“My administration’s resolve to restore peace and security remains unshakable. Forces of evil will never prevail over our country”, Tinubu said.

Tinubu, who also addressed the current economic hardship, said government’s efforts to revive the economy were beginning to yield encouraging results.

“We are working tirelessly to restore investor confidence, stabilise key sectors and build an inclusive economy that serves the interests of all Nigerians,” he said.

He congratulated Christians in Nigeria and the rest of the world on the occasion of Easter, describing it as a time to reflect on the enduring values of sacrifice, redemption, love and hope, which he said are central to the Christian faith and resonate with his administration’s vision of “Renewed Hope.”

“As President of our blessed nation, I draw inspiration from this timeless message of hope and renewal. I remain steadfast in my commitment to delivering the promise of a Renewed Hope — a better, more just, and prosperous Nigeria for all,” he said.

The President also joined the global Christian community in celebrating the recovery of Pope Francis, offering prayers for the Pontiff’s continued strength and inspirational leadership.

Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain united and hopeful, stressing that the country would overcome its current challenges.

“Just as Christ triumphed over death, so too shall our country triumph over every challenge we face. Our unity and resilience are our greatest strengths,” he said.

President Tinubu wished all Nigerians a peaceful and joyful Easter, praying that the season brings renewed faith and national progress.

    IGP gives men marching order

Following the President’s directive, Police Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun asked Police Commissioners across all State Commands and Formations, and their supervising Assistant Inspectors-General, to enhance visibility policing, extended vigilance and intelligence gathering.

He said it was imperative to ensure a safe and secure festive celebration for all citizens, as Christians across Nigeria and the world celebrate Easter.

Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement yesterday that the IGP was not unmindful of “the critical importance of enhanced patrol and strategic deployment of personnel to places of worship, recreation centres, major highways, and other public spaces to deter criminal activities and provide swift responses to any security challenges that may arise.”

The IGP sought the cooperation of the general public in providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing the breakdown of law and order during this period to the security agencies.

Citizens, he urged, should remain security conscious, act with moderation, and avoid reckless driving on highways during the festive period and beyond.

The Police Commands across the states pledged adequate security, public safety and peaceful celebration before, during and after the Easter period.

Spokesperson of the Lagos State Command Benjamin Hundeyin said Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh had ordered the immediate deployment of massive police personnel with logistics throughout the state to ensure adequate security, safety and peaceful Easter celebration.

He said: “CP deployed personnel to all strategic locations across the length and breadth of the state including the identified black spots and flash points to prevent crime and criminality.

“This is done to remove fear of crimes from the minds of all residents and visitors alike and ensure hitch-free Easter celebration this year and beyond.

“The command will also focus on all churches, venues of celebrations and other areas of recreation so as to guarantee safety and maximum protection of the Christian faithful and other religious people who will be joining the Christian community in the celebration.

“Particular security attention will be placed and focused on recreation centres and other public spaces where large gatherings are anticipated. These spaces are going to be properly policed.”

Hundeyin advised parents and guardians to prevail on their children and wards not to allow themselves to be used to cause any disturbance of the peace and tranquility currently being enjoyed throughout the state.

According to him, CP Jimoh and personnel of the command join all the Christian faithful in the celebration and fervently wish them sustainable peace, love and joy associated with the Holy ceremony and Happy Easter.

In Abia State, armed police personnel yesterday embarked on a show of force in Aba metropolis and its environs.

Besides, policemen mounted stop and search checkpoints along the Aba-Owerri Road.

Police sources said the show of force was a warning to those who might want to cause trouble in the state to desist.

They added that the police in conjunction with other sister security agencies would not fold their hands

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Maureen Chinaka confirmed in a statement that the Command has “activated a comprehensive Operation Order to provide robust security measures before, during, and after the Easter celebrations.

“Security personnel have been strategically deployed across Abia State to guarantee the safety of life and property.

“Regular and special patrols of major roads, worship centers, recreational spots, and other public areas are ongoing.

“These efforts, alongside other covert and overt operations are aimed to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free Easter celebration for all.”

The Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, Baba Azare, said in Uyo that the police command was committed to maintaining law and order during the festival.

Azare said that high visibility policing had been activated with strategic deployment of personnel to churches, event centres, parks, highways, recreational grounds, among others.

“Our personnel will embark on aggressive but professional foot and vehicular patrols across the state.

“All deployments are intelligence-driven, officers have been warned to remain civil and respectful while discharging their duties,” he said.

Kogi State Police Commissioner Miller Dantawaye directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Operational Commanders are to reassess their security strategies and intensify police visibility across major public spaces to guarantee the safety of residents during the festive period.

The commissioner emphasised the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and stressed that joint efforts were underway to maintain law and order throughout the period.

The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Jigawa, Mr Ahmadu Abdullahi yesterday held a strategic security meeting with service Commanders and chairmen of the 27 local governments in the state on the security situation in the state.

The police command spokesman, SP Lawan Shiisu, said the meeting provided a unified platform for all stakeholders to review current security challenges and chart a common path forward.

The spokesman quoted the CP as emphasising the need for a holistic and proactive approach to tackle crime and to maintain law and order across the state.

“All hands must be on deck. Security is a collective responsibility, and today’s meeting marks a significant step in fostering the synergy we need across security agencies, local governments, and community leaders,” the CP was quoted as saying.

Shiisu added that the council chairmen who attended the meeting unanimously agreed to provide necessary support for security initiatives directly or material assistance.

According to him, the chairmen reiterated their commitment to working closely with security agencies in their respective areas in order to ensure the effective implementation of agreed-upon strategies.

“The service commanders are those of the Nigerian Army (NA), Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), and other agencies.

“This renewed cooperation demonstrates stakeholders’ firm commitment to creating a safer and more secure state through shared responsibility and mutual support,” Shiisu said.

Also, the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor, Mr Usman Muhammad emphasized the importance of timely intelligence sharing, resource support, and community vigilance in securing the state.

Spokesperson of the Kwara State Police Command Aderoun Ejire-Adeyemi said Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Unit Heads had been directed to lay emphasis intelligence-led policing, credible intelligence gathering and crime-prevention measures while lapses in security coverage would  attract command-level accountability.

Tinubu is greatest asset to North’s security, development —Matawalle

Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle yesterday said that contrary to claims by some critics, the federal government has achieved a lot in addressing the security challenge in the North.

Matawalle described President Tinubu as the north’s greatest asset in the security fight and development.

The minister spoke through his Senior Aide (Politics) Hon. Ibrahim Danmaliki Gidan Goga.

“Our people in the North are wise enough not to be misled by individuals who have failed to secure their political future,” the minister declared, adding that these critics “once held power but squandered it, and now resort to mischief to stay relevant.”

He said that Operation Fansan Yamma and other military initiatives have taken out “over 65 notorious bandit leaders “,  hundreds of their foot soldiers been  eliminated, and more than 200 camps destroyed since Tinubu took office.

He asked for the cooperation of the public in the fight against insecurity to ensure “lasting peace and development in the North.”

Matawalle blamed some political elite for spreading misinformation out of frustration over missed appointments.

He said: “When given the mandate in the past, they failed our people.

“Now they go around shedding crocodile tears to gain cheap popularity behind those they abandoned.”

On infrastructure, the minister lauded the revival of long-neglected projects including the multi‑billion‑naira Zaria–Gusau–Talata Mafara–Sokoto expressway and the re‑awarded Abuja–Kaduna–Kano highway, among others.

“These are major arteries the North has waited decades to see completed,” he noted.

Matawalle reaffirmed Tinubu’s commitment to “building a prosperous, united Nigeria,” pledging that the administration would continue to deliver security, cohesion, and growth through the remainder of its first term.

Rivers emergency declaration saved Fubara from impeachment – Wike

    • Says he opposed Atiku in 2023 because he doesn’t keep his word
    • Declares PDP unprepared for victory in 2027

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike yesterday shared his thoughts on the political crisis in Rivers State that led to the March 18, 2025 imposition of emergency rule on the state and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara for six months.

Wike, the immediate past governor of the state and now estranged godfather of his suspended successor, said he actually wanted Fubara completely ousted as governor only for him (governor) to be saved by the suspension.

The minister also spoke on his distrust of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, his assessment of the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 polls and why he remains resolute in his support for President Bola Tinubu for the elections.

“As a politician, I am not happy with the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State,” Wike said in a televised interview.

“I wanted the outright removal of the governor. The President, by declaring a state of emergency, saved Fubara.”

President Tinubu suspended Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and all members of the House of Assembly for six months, citing security reports.

The President appointed an administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) to run the affairs of the state during the emergency period.

Continuing, Wike said: “The governor was gone. He was gone, yes… so when people say the President did this, I say they should be praising him.

“Every morning, they should go to the President and ask, ‘Can we wash your feet for saving us?’”

The minister said he was not opposed to peace talks with Fubara and alleged that the governor’s advisers were the ones discouraging him from embracing peace.

You can’t bank on Atiku; he doesn’t honour his words

Wike, who is also locked in a running battle with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as a fall out of the 2022 presidential primary of the PDP, said his opposition to the former vice president was based on principle and not on account of Atiku’s refusal to pick him as running mate for the 2023 election.

His words: “I wanted power rotation. I could not have imagined that after eight years of Buhari, power goes to north again.

“It is not about whether you chose to field me or not, it’s about principle.

“To take that decision was difficult. A decision had to be taken and I looked at it, Atiku was not an option. So, he was a no go area.”

Wike denied suggestions that Atiku dropped him as his running mate.

“From day one, I told my delegates when they came that one thing you must know is that Atiku does not keep to his words.

“I can tell you authoritatively what happened. In 2019, Atiku, (Bukola) Saraki and (Uche) Secondus came to see me that I was going to nominate the attorney general and minister of petroleum.

“When we lost the election, the man who was supposed to bring the attorney general did not know when the legal team was constituted, and I laughed.

“I watched it on television, and I now called Saraki: you people have constituted a legal team, and you said I was going to bring the attorney general.

“I know from day one that Atiku would never keep to his word and I’ve never banked on that. I will not take his word to the bank.

“It was very clear that I made the right decision and you can’t see me now saying I will support him for president. How?”

    PDP not ready for 2027

The FCT minister also assessed the chances of his party, PDP, ahead of the 2027 elections.

He did not see the party making any waves.

“The PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. It is very obvious,” he said.

“For instance, I have an examination and I am going to class to read. Indeed, am I reading? Am I studying? You don’t need to deceive anybody that you are reading. You are only trying to read so that people will see that you have carried your bag to class.”

On the recent statement by the PDP Governors Forum ruling out coalition with any party for the 2027 polls, Wike said: “They are not sincere to themselves; they are not also sincere to the party.

“On Tuesday, to be precise, I watched Politics Today on Channels TV where the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, was talking.

“And after watching that interview, I called Seyi Makinde who is my friend and I told him that he did not tell the truth as regards some issues.

“Fundamentally, you in 2023. One of the reasons why PDP lost was impunity. People who believed they have all it takes refused to respect the constitution of the party as regards power sharing. Now they are also making the same mistake by the impunity of the Governors Forum.

“That is the situation of the PDP. So, they cannot say for sure that they are ready for 2027. Power struggle cannot help the party.

“I am minister of FCT and I am not just any minister; they must understand that. There is nothing any governor can do that I cannot do. It is very obvious that PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. You do not need to like me. What I am saying, is it correct? All these power struggles cannot help us (PDP).

“If PDP does not put their house in order, I’m not going to support them in the Abuja Area councils election. If PDP goes the way they are going, I will not support them.

“This crisis will consume this party until the right thing is done. I have never recommended anybody to these governors but that does not mean that I don’t play any role.

‘Why Tinubu will remain president till 2031’

Wike reiterated his support for President Tinubu for the next polls.

He said: “I said it in 2023 and I’m saying it again that until 2031, when the position should go to the North, there is nothing anybody will say to me now.

“It’s not anti-party, it’s harmonious living together. You can’t tell me that it’s your own prerogative to be producing president; let’s all live.

“Whether APC liked it or not, it was very turbulent for Tinubu to have scaled through that (2023) election.

“You could see that he could have failed the election woefully. The fuel crisis, the naira issue was terrible.

“No party in government would at that time bring such a policy when you know you are running an election, but everything was done and he survived it.

“That’s how you will know that there are people that, first of all, God is on their side. They also know this game and you must give it to them.”

Fubara’s N300m gift to NBA not appropriated

The minister faulted the financial gift of N300 million which Fubara gave the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for the purpose of hosting its 2025 Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt.

The association has shifted the conference to Enugu citing the state of emergency in Rivers, and Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas recently asked for the return of the money to the state.

Wike said the gift was illegal as there was no provision whatsoever for the money in the state’s budget.

Besides, he said, the association’s criticism of the state of emergency was motivated by the gift.

“How will the NBA back Rivers’ emergency rule when they collect gifts?” he said.

“When the Body of Benchers came to see me, I told them. When the Justice gave judgment about local governments, the NBA came out and condemned it without reading the judgment.

“The President declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, they say he is not correct, until everybody now knows why they took that stance, because the state gifted them a gift that was not appropriated.

“NBA took N300 million and said it was a gift.

“In my budget, I put it as a grant. I am allowed by law because it is appropriated. In this case the gift was not appropriated. The NBA took an illegal gift.”

Lack of leadership destroying PDP — Fayose

Another prominent member of PDP and former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday lamented what he called the unfortunate situation the party has now found itself.

He said long-standing unresolved issues and a lack of leadership direction had driven the once ruling party to the precipice.

“The situation in the party is unfortunate and regrettable,” Fayose said on Channels Television.

He added: “This problem did not start today. The party has failed to initiate any meaningful reconciliation or fence-mending.

“Everyone is fighting for their own interest—power for power, strength for strength.

“When you fall on metal, may God save your life. Everybody’s defending their tea, their cup, and their position. And when you use one broom to sweep, you make no impact.

“There is no denying the fact that all is not well with the PDP. All is not well, and it will take only a miracle to bring this party to the dreamed destination.”

Like Wike, Fayose said power must remain in the South in 2027 and reaffirmed his support for President Tinubu.

Assessing the President’s performance, the ex-governor said: “If you compare today and the past, you will still give it to Tinubu. The system is rotten, but he is managing a terrible situation.”

    • Governor announces plans to hold security summit

Benue State, the food basket of the nation, came under a fresh spell of severe insecurity on Thursday night as suspected killer herdsmen launched deadly attacks in some communities, killing many residents and rendering hundreds of others homeless.

Residents of Ukum Local Government Area, Benue North Senatorial Senatorial Zone, claimed that no fewer than 100 bodies were recovered in the bush as suspected herdsmen attacked Gbagir and Ityuuluv settlements. Their claims could, however, not be verified at press time.

A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Police Command, Sewuese Anene, a Superintendent of Police (SP), and made available to newsmen in Makurdi yesterday said five people were killed in Ukum LGA while 12 were killed in Logo, adding that many other people were injured and were receiving treatments.

The herdsmen, according to eyewitness Paul Aguma, stormed Ukum Local Government Area in the night with large herds of cattle. Aguma said many of the victims were caught unaware as the invaders set houses ablaze and shot people dead under the cover of darkness.

In Ityuluuv, the herdsmen took over houses and grazed their cows freely. Youths in the area spent the better part of yesterday (Friday) conveying victims of the attacks from the affected villages to St. Anthony Hospital, Zakibiam, Ukum Local Government Headquarters.

Before Thursday’s attacks in Ukum Local Government Area, three persons were killed by suspected herdsmen at Mbasombo, Gwer East Local Government Area, while many houses were set ablaze. The herdsmen then proceeded to Tarka and Buruku local government areas, regarded as the centre of the Tiv Nation.

According to Dennis Mernyi, a community member, several communities in Tombo Mbaya, Buruku Local Government Area, and neighbouring Mbachoughu and Mbanyagber in Tarka LGA were invaded with harvested crops destroyed by cattle.

He disclosed that the affected villages include Ortese Mbaatsua, Garagboughul, Usen, Tomahar, Tse Damkor, all of Tombo Mbaya in Buruku Local Government Area, who all fled from their ancestry homes following the bloody attacks.

The Nation learnt that residents were seen fleeing for safety as the invaders attackers descended on the aforementioned areas, leaving behind destruction and widespread panic.

“Nursing mothers with babies fastened to their backs trekked long distances in search of safety. It was a week of horror as the herdsmen operated for hours without any challenge from security agents,” a resident said.

Those affected have taken shelter at some primary schools around the troubled areas, while the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps continues to swell.

The Benue State Police Command, in a statement yesterday, attributed the attacks to suspected armed herders, putting the death toll in Logo and Ukum local government areas at 17 while many others were injured.

Anene said: “On 17/4/2025 at about 2100hrs, information was received that a large number of suspected militia had invaded Sankera axis of Benue State with intention to attack communities around Gbagir, Ukum Local Government Area.

“Upon receipt of this report, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Police Command, CP. Steve Yabanet, ordered tactical teams to move to the area and join forces with police officers on ground and other security agencies to forestall the attack.

“Following this order, a team of officers moved to the area and engaged them.

“While the attackers were being repelled in the early hours of today, they shot sporadically at unsuspecting farmers as they came across them.

“Five persons were recovered at Gbagir area and taken to the hospital where they were confirmed dead.

“Unfortunately, an unsuspected simultaneous attack was carried out in Logo where 12 persons were killed before the arrival of the police, making a total of 17 persons.

“However, Security agencies within Sankera axis are still engaging the bandits as they retreat back to the forest around Taraba axis,” she said.

Anene warned social media users that were reporting unconfirmed reports and inciting the general public to desist from such actions.

The police spokesperson said that such actions were capable of creating unnecessary tension in the state.

She said the Command under the leadership of Mr Steve Yabanet was committed to fighting the attackers and encouraging the good people of Sankera to continue to cooperate with the police as the operation was ongoing.

Alia announces plans to hold security summit

The Executive Governor of Benue State, Rev Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, had last Saturday announced plans to hold Benue State Security Summit in his effort to end insecurity in the state.

Governor Alia made the vow at Government House Makurdi while interacting with the advisory team sent by the Chief of Defence Staff to look into the security situation in the state.

He said Benue State has faced increased attacks in recent times with specific local government areas as targets.

Father Alia said: “Benue has experienced increased attacks in recent times and they are mostly coming from very specific local governments, and the heat of it all is Kwande, Ukum, Katsina-ala, Logo and Gwer-West.

“I am aware that Benue State is not the only state that is affected by this, but I want you to know that we have suffered quite intensely, and the Benue people in those local government areas have undergone what is beyond imagination.”

The governor added that his administration has held series of important meetings with the office of the Nigerian Security Advisor, adding that a committee was already in place working with the state and private sector to have a Benue State security summit even as he has strengthened the civil protection Guards to help the conventional security agencies to put an end to the killings and displacement of people in the state.

“As I speak, we have a team that is working in conjunction with the state and private sector on having a Benue security summit.

“We want to hold that first and then I’m already in talks with my colleague governors in the North Central for us to hold a North Central Security Summit,” he added.

Governor Alia, who thanked the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa for his efforts in ensuring that peace returns in Benue State, advised the Advisory team to extend their visit to the neighbouring Taraba and Nasarawa states.

“We share borders with our brothers here. I feel your visit should not just stop in Benue. Let the Chief of Defence Staff extend this visit to our neighbouring states of Taraba and Nasarawa,” he said.

He called on the team to publicize the names of those it identified as sponsors of militia in the state, adding that something must be done immediately to restore peace.

Earlier, the leader of the team, Air Vice Marshal Emmanuel Oche (rtd) explained that their visit provided an opportunity for them to interact with relevant stakeholders, listen to them and come up with the best ways of ending the increasing number of killings in Benue State, stressing that they had identified non-kinetic approach as the best way of handling the issue at the moment.

While commending Governor Alia for his efforts towards restoring peace in the state, the team suggested that disarming, reintegration, and resettlement of militia in some part of the state would go a long way in solving the security challenges.

I wanted outright removal of Fubara – Wike

…says PDP not ready for 2027 elections

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that he personally preferred the outright removal of the suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Wike made this known on Friday during a media parley in Abuja, which was monitored by our correspondent.

President Tinubu last month declared a state of emergency in the state, citing escalating political instability and recent security threats, including pipeline explosions.

In a move he described as “inevitably compelling,” the president suspended Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the House of Assembly for six months.

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas was appointed as sole administrator to steer the affairs of the state pending the resolution of the crisis.

Wike, who was the immediate past governor of Rivers, said: “As a politician, I am not happy with the declaration of Emergency Rule in Rivers state. I wanted the outright removal of the governor. But for the interest of the state, the president did the right thing to prevent anarchy in the state.

“The matter is in court but people must tell the truth. The governor was gone. It is not in my place to make it good for the governor. As a politician, my business is not to make him comfortable and that is why there is power plane”.

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads since Fubara became governor.

The conflict led to the emergence of factional speakers and a parallel assembly.

Wike also said if the main opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) does not have a formidable structure to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

From the look of things, the minister said PDP is not ready for the 2027 elections.

Opposition leaders across the country are intensifying efforts to form a united front against the APC.

However, divergent interests among key stakeholders have continued to hamper the progress of coalition talks.

Wike also made it known that he will not support PDP, party leaders do not unite and put their house in order for elections.

The minister said: “The PDP is not ready for the 2027 election. It is very obvious. For instance, I have an examination and I am going to class to read. Indeed, am I reading? Am I studying? you don’t need to deceive anybody that you are reading. You are only trying to read so that people will see that you have carried your bag to class.
