Electricity crisis: Govt offers national grid to investors

    • Seven million meters shortfall being tackled, says minister

To end the frequent collapse of the national grid, which it described as “old and weak”, the Federal Government has unbundled and offered it for privatisation.

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu stated this yesterday while reviewing the government’s activities in the electricity sector.

He spoke during his appearance at the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing Series at the Radio House in Abuja.

The programme was moderated by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris.

Adelabu explained that there is a seven million consumer meter shortfall, which the government is bridging with a planned programme.

He also said no fewer than 80 million Nigerians out of an estimated 240 million population lack access to electricity.

According to him, the government has opened talks with some investors who have indicated interest in the operation of some aspects of the grid before the end of the year.

He said: “We have various offers from private investors. The national grid is owned 100 per cent by the government.

“But, I can tell you, with other ministries competing for funds, we cannot fund the national grid alone.

“It is an expanded national grid. It is too large and there are some dedicated lines in which some private investors have expressed interest.”

Adelabu believes private sector participation in grid management would not be difficult with the operation of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

The minister said: “Let them finance construction of new lines, construction of new substations and introduction of new transformers.

“They will be able to benefit from the proceeds of the willing charges from the Distribution Companies (DisCos) and the Generation Companies (GenCos).”

He assured that the government will settle N2 trillion out of the N4 trillion indebtedness to GenCos before the end of the year.

He said he was already discussing with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, who has pledged to settle the debt with budgetary allocation and guaranteed instruments.

On how the debt was accumulated, he said the government subsidises 85 per cent of the N170 per kilowatt of electricity consumed by Nigerians on Band B to E.

The minister described half of the N4 trillion as legacy debts from the previous administration.

According to him, the 11 DisCos are not charging cost-reflective tariffs, a development he noted has restricted investment in the sector.

He said the local meter manufacturers lack the capacity for holistic production, other than assembling the parts.

“The rate at which we want to move in meter acquisition and procurement, they don’t have the capacity. What we have, 90 per cent of them are assemblages.

“They assemble completely knock-down parts, CKDs, or semi-knock-down parts, SKDs. They are not full manufacturers. Local content ranges from 10 to 40 per cent. So, we rely more on importation plus local supply.”

He said the launch of the Presidential Metering Initiative is backed by a N700 billion allocation, adding that the government targets the acquisition of 1.1 million meters by year-end.

“The procurement process has started, I can assure you, and we have a plan for two million meters annually for the next five years, and the procurement process has started.

“If we add two million meters annually, it’s 10 million meters, plus 1.1 for this year, that’s 11.1 million meters.”

He said the arrangement will cut off the national meter gap of about six to seven million through the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DSTREP).

Over 3.2 million meters, he said, will be procured and installed alongside data management solutions for DisCo optimisation.

“Today, we have completed the procuring process of DSTREP, 75,000 meters have already arrived this month, and we expect an additional 200,000 meters in May.

“Before the end of this year, 1.3 million meters will come from the World Bank-funded DSTREP programme.”

The minister added that power generation peaked at 6,003 megawatts and evacuation at 5,801 megawatts last month.

    The scale of national grid

The minister described the transmission line as a wide network of electrical installations across the length and breadth of the country, spanning over one million square meters of land mass.

He said: “The Nigerian transmission network currently comprises 92 lines of 330 kV covering 9,504 kilometres. Our 141 lines of 132 kV spanning 8,558 kilometres are interconnected through our 57 existing 33, 330, 132, 33 kV and 186, 132, 33 kv substations.

“That is over 250 substations across the country. This backbone infrastructure is supported by 91 power transformers of 330 kV voltage level with 14,978 MVA capacity and 392 transformers of 132, 33 kV providing 19,238 MVA capacity. Do you know what 1MVA means? It means two 500 kV transformers combined.

“That is 1MVA, and we are talking of almost 35,000 MVA capacity. So, it’s a huge grid to cover over 200 million people.”

He insisted that its maintenance and expansion history have been poor. “So, it is old,” he said.

Troops hit terrorists in Borno, Plateau, Kaduna, others

Terrorists suffered a heavy blow from military onslaught in the past week with many of them killed, the Defence Headquarters said yesterday.

Many parts of the North have been reeling from an upsurge in terrorist activities.

Insurgents had attacked four military formations in Borno State and dislodged troops, with many civilians and security agents killed.

There have also been attacks on Plateau communities, with many killed and property destroyed.

In a statement yesterday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen Markus Kangye, said troops in collaboration with other security agencies and hybrid forces recorded successes in neutralising several insurgents.

They also rescued abducted persons, arrested insurgents and recovered arms and ammunition, as well as stolen crude oil in the Southsouth.

Kangye said between April 10  and 14, troops raided Konduga, Kukawa, Abadam and Mobbar in Borno and Gujba in Yobe.

Some terrorists were neutralised and others apprehended, while PKT guns, AK-47 rifles, Dane guns, PKT barrels and assorted rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition as well as Improvised Explosive Devices were seized.

The spokesman said troops intercepted seven terrorists’ logistics suppliers and recovered supplies in Monguno, Mobbar and Kukawa in Borno and Potiskum in Yobe.

According to him, scores of Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists, comprising adult males, adult females and some children, surrendered to troops within the theatre of operation.

Kangye said within the period, troops also neutralised many terrorists and bandits in Tsafe, Talata Mafara, Kaura Namoda and Maru in Zamfara, Northwest.

He said: “A terrorist kingpin, Bello Kaura, was also neutralised in an air interdiction.

“Troops also arrested some terrorists and rescued 17 kidnapped victims.”

Terrorists were also eliminated in Bungudu and Maradun, Zamfara State, with three arrested.

Five kidnapped victims and two students of the Federal University of Dutsi-Ma were freed, the spokesman said.

Troops also recovered arms and assorted kinds of 7.62mm ammunition, motorcycles and rustled cows.

“Troops, acting on credible intelligence, arrested 13 suspected terrorists and a gunrunner in Giwa and Chikun Local Government Areas of Kaduna State, and Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State on April 11 and 13,” Kangye said.

In Plateau State, the defence spokesman said troops’ onslaught in Barkin Ladi, Wase, Jos South, Mangu and Bassa, and Jama’a and Sanga in Kaduna State, led to the neutralisation of many terrorists and the rescue of 21 kidnap victims.

Eight suspected criminals/kidnappers were arrested in Jos North, Bassa, Shendam and Jama’a in Plateau, Kangye said.

He added that troops were similarly active in the Niger Delta.

Kangye said: “The troops seized 117,395 litres of stolen crude oil, 22,050 litres of illegally refined AGO, 6,000 litres of DPK and 8,060 litres of PMS.

“Additionally, they discovered and destroyed 102 crude oil cooking ovens, 94 dugout pits, 18 boats, four speedboats, 56 storage tanks, 164 drums and 42 illegal refining sites.

“Other items recovered include pumping machines, drilling machines, galvanised pipes, tricycles, motorcycles, mobile phones and nine vehicles.

“We are committed to taking the battle to the enemy to deny them freedom of action, thereby making them thirst for surrender.”

Also yesterday, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) component of Operation Hadin Kai, in a military onslaught against Boko Haram in the Northeast, neutralised scores of terrorists in the Sambisa general area and the Southern Tumbuns in Borno.

It also destroyed terrorists’ infrastructure and hideouts in the areas.

NAF’s spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said in a statement that the air strikes were executed at the two terrorist strongholds on April 15.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, said the recent increase in terrorist attacks will not diminish the military’s determination.

In a statement by the Director of Defence Information, Brig-Gen Tukur Gusau, the CDS said troops were more dedicated to duty despite difficult challenges.

    Northern coalition seeks action

Also yesterday, the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) described the killings in Plateau as senseless and unacceptable.

It called on the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to stop the violence and bring those responsible to justice.

In a statement by the National Coordinator, Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG said: “These killings are not isolated. They are part of a broader resurgence of violence across the North, including terrorist attacks by Boko Haram in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest, and ethno-religious clashes in the Northcentral.

“The government’s tepid response has emboldened killers, leaving citizens to question its commitment to their safety.

“For years, our communities have endured unending cycles of violence while the government issues hollow condolences and empty promises.

“The blood of Nigerians is not cheap. We reject the normalisation of these tragedies and demand accountability through result-oriented action.

“The CNG demands that the President halt his holiday in France in the face of the massacre of his citizens, whose resources he is utilising insatiably to return to confront the problem head-on. It is a case of Nero fiddling while Rome is burning.

“We demand that reinforced security forces be deployed at all flashpoints in Plateau to protect civilians. The government must adopt brutal efficiency in dismantling terror networks.

“We demand that all perpetrators be arrested and prosecuted, including sponsors of these attacks.

“The era of impunity must end immediately and permanently.

“Nigeria’s security framework must be overhauled to prioritise intelligence-driven operations, community engagement, and collaboration with locals.”

    CAN donates relief materials

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) donated relief materials to victims of attacks in Bokkos, Plateau.

Its Vice President, Rev. Stephen Panya-Baba, presented the items yesterday.

Gunmen on April 2 attacked Hurti, Josho, Daffo, and other communities in Manguna District of the locality.

The relief materials include building materials, foodstuffs, and toiletries, among others.

“They are an expression of our deepest concern, genuine love, and care for all of you,” Panya-Baba said.

She said:  “RHI recognises that the demand of the health professional requires not only skills and compassion, but also the right tools and kits to encourage our midwives as they serve others.

“Since the initial launch in January 2025, we have distributed the professional kits in four zones, namely Northcentral, Northeast, Northwest and Southsouth. By the grace of God, we will be concluding with the sixth zone in Enugu, Southeast in June.

“These donations have been made possible through the generous support of an anonymous global partner dedicated to improving health outcomes for our citizens. I refer to them as anonymous because they prefer to remain so.”

She told the traditional rulers that the scholarship scheme for students and the Alternative High School for Girls are tailored to provide both education and childcare support for teenage mothers through on-site crèches.

The First Lady also appealed to the monarchs to support her campaign to end female genital mutilation, Hepatitis B, and other sicknesses affecting women.

Chairman of the state Council of Obas and Olowo of Owo, Gbadegesin Ogunoye, said the traditional rulers would support the First Lady’s initiative.

National Leader of  Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Ondo State  Council of Obas have hailed the  Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s performance in office.

While Pa Fasoranti said the government has done excellently since it came to power in May 2023, the   Obas’ council expressed confidence that Nigerians would seek the return of the President after the end of his first tenure in 2027.

They spoke at different meetings with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Akure yesterday.

Welcoming  Senator Tinubu to his residence, the 98-year-old Fasoranti said:  “I am satisfied with what he (Tinubu) is doing in Nigeria. Well done.”

He revealed that the President has surpassed his expectations and proceeded to offer prayers for divine guidance and wisdom for him (Tinubu) as he steers the affairs of the nation.

The First Lady’s visit, described as informal, was in recognition of the elder statesman’s status as a father figure to Senator Tinubu and the President.

She also praised Pa Fasoranti for his unwavering commitment to national unity and development.

“By the time Asiwaju completes his first term, Nigerians will beg him to go for another.”

They also pledged to amplify the message of RHI’s health campaigns, particularly those targeting Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and the fight against stigmatisation.

  • PDP governors can’t stop coalition train, says Atiku

PDP governors can’t stop coalition train, says Atiku

    • Ex-VP hints of likely exit from party

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has fired back at Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors who rejected coalition or merger with any other political party.

“Indeed, the Coalition Train has left the station and would have multiple stops to bring on board Nigerians of all shades” Atiku wrote on his X handle yesterday.

This comment is an indication that the former Presidential candidate and his political party have parted ways in the build-up to the 2027 elections.

He also gave a hint of likely dumping the PDP to realize his bid to contest the election.

He said: “Whatever vehicle that will give us good governance in the future of our children and grandchildren; that is the vehicle we are going to ride on”.

The PDP National Vice Chairman (Southsouth) Dan Orbih blamed the party’s protracted crisis on an entrenched interest in contesting every presidential election without respecting the provisions of the PDP constitution.

Although, he did not name the entrenched interest, Atiku had contested for president two times on PDP platform and one time, using the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform.

In their communiqué after their meeting in Ibadan on Monday, the governors said their decision on rejection of coalition, was taken after due consultation with all PDP party organ.

But at a meeting with a delegation of the PDP from Nasarawa State, Atiku insisted that the merger train had already left the station.

The team was led by Alhaji Jibirin Sabo Keana and members of National Opinion Leaders, headed by Yusuf Sheriff Banki.

“Yesterday, I met with a delegation of two groups, during which I briefed them about the status of the pan-Nigerian coalition that I am building in conjunction with other leaders and stakeholders across political divides and regions.

“I informed them that the Nigerian Movement is being powered by Nigerians desirous of reclaiming and rebuilding their country from across the nooks and crannies of our country.

“First was the meeting with a delegation of the PDP from Nasarawa State, led by Alhaji Jibirin Sabo Keana, and a delegation of National Opinion leaders, led by Yusuf Sheriff Banki,” he added.

Atiku also warned them against being distracted by minor financial offers that could jeopardise their future.

He said leaders from various parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), PDP, Labour Party (LP) and others, have been meeting to forge a new path towards a better Nigeria.

He referred to the initiative behind the coalition as “Sabuwar tafiya” in Hausa, translating to “a new pathway” in English.

Atiku, who was PDP presidential standard bearer in 2023 expressed optimism about announcing the coalition soon and appealed to the public to join the movement.

“Now, because of that, that’s why a number of us leaders from the parties I have mentioned – APC, PDP, Labour, and others – have come together to say we are going to have what I call in Hausa Sabuwar tafiya, which in English means a new path, a new pathway to a new Nigeria,” he added.

“And we have been meeting, and by the grace of God, very soon we will announce. We hope and we appeal to you all to be part of this movement.

“Whatever vehicle that will give us good governance in the future of our children and grandchildren; that is the vehicle we are going to ride on.

“Get to planning and working together and getting as many Nigerians as possible to get converted to this new pathway.”

    Wike not the problem

According to Orbih, blaming the crisis tearing the PDP apart on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike will amount to standing logic on its head.

He identified the real problem as those with entrenched interest in contesting every presidential election in flagrant disregard to the PDP constitution.

Orbih, also leader of the PDP Legacy Group in Edo, stated this while handing over the PDP new secretariat, he donated to the party on Wednesday in Benin.

He urged the Acting National Chairman, Ambassador  Iliya Damagun to initiate congresses that would bring in new leaders capable of repositioning the PDP and restoring its lost glory.

Orbih said: “PDP is a strong and formidable party, but it still has challenges that we cannot afford to ignore or sweep under the carpet.

“Wike is not the party’s problem. The real issue is those who want to run every time without following the party’s constitutional guidelines.

“We must put our differences aside and work with sincere party members to rebuild and reposition the PDP for future political battles ahead.

“People are mocking the PDP and asking where we are, but I tell you today, the PDP in Edo is fully back.”

But a former PDP governorship candidate in Lagos, Segun Adewale disagreed with Chief Olabode George, who said that another shot at the presidency by Atiku on PDP ticket will kill the party.

Adewale, who said it was wrong for anyone to say the emergence of Atiku would undermine the party’s victory in 2027, contended that the chances of the party would rather be affected by anti-party activities and selfishness of some party leaders.

    • CPC bloc ‘won’t quit APC’

The rumoured planned defection of key members of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc in the All Progressives Congress (APC) was laid to rest yesterday.

The members affirmed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration and its policies.

They also pledged loyalty to the APC.

Former Nasarawa State Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, the only elected CPC governor; former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, who was House of Representatives Speaker, and Minister of Education in the Muhammadu Buhari Administration, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, signed a communiqué after a meeting of the CPC bloc, along with 20 others.

The rumour of the CPC bloc defection gained currency following the move by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, a member of the CPC bloc, to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) last month.

The CPC, Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP), a faction of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and some Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors fused to form the APC in 2014.

The then new political party galvanised the votes across the country to defeat the then-ruling PDP and its presidential candidate, former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Gen. Buhari became President in 2015.

Those alleging a defection plot by the CPC stalwarts attributed the reason to the so-called neglect by President Tinubu.

Others who signed the CPC bloc communiqué are: Senator Ibrahim Musa, Senator Mustafa Salihu, Farouk Adamu Aliyu, Almajiri Geidam, Waziri Bulama, Dr. Nasiru Ladan Argungu and Dr. Dominic Alancha.

Others are Ayuba Balami, Osita Okechukwu, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, Lucy Ajayi, Captain Bala Jibrin, Uche Ufearoh, Alh. Yusuf Salihu, Abubakar Maikudi, Mutallib Badmus, Alh. Muhammed Ahmed Datti, Muhammed Etsu, Chief Jerry Johnson and Alh. Alkali Ajikolo.

The statement reads: “We, the undersigned leaders and committed members of the former CPC, who were part of those instrumental in the historic merger that gave birth to the APC, hereby issue this statement to clarify our unalloyed loyalty to our great party and express firm solidarity with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“Recent misleading narratives suggesting a defection or disaffection among CPC stakeholders are false, mischievous, and should be ignored.

“We remain integral to the APC and are fully aligned with its leadership and vision.

“Our position is as follows: We stand firmly with you, the APC. We wish to state categorically that we have neither left the APC nor do we intend to leave.

“The CPC bloc remains one of the legacy foundations of the APC, and we are resolute in our commitment to the party and its progressive ideals.

“The APC is our collective project: As part of the legacy parties that formed the APC, we take pride in the sacrifices made to build a platform that promotes national unity, justice, and development.

“We will not allow some people to dismantle the party we helped to build through years of tireless work and dedication.

“We reject the politics of division and desperation: Attempts to create disunity within the party and the country do not reflect the will or position of the genuine CPC core members, and it is unacceptable.

“Support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda: We align ourselves fully with the economic and governance reforms being undertaken by President Bola Tinubu.

“Though challenging, these policies are necessary steps to rebuild our economy and secure a better future for all Nigerians.

“We urge patience and collective support as the benefits unfold.

“Internal discontent must be addressed through due process: While we acknowledge that some party members may feel sidelined, we emphasise that such grievances are not exclusive to any one bloc.

“We advise those concerned to seek redress through constitutional channels within the party and not to resort to negative public agitation or hasty exits from the party.

“Our democracy and party must be strengthened, not weakened. At this critical point in Nigeria’s democratic journey, it is imperative for all APC members—especially those with deep roots in the party’s formation—to work together to preserve its legacy and help consolidate Nigeria’s democracy.

“We must avoid actions that erode our unity and the stability of the nation.

“Call for better engagement and communication: We call on the leadership of the APC to scale up engagement with members across all levels.

“Strengthening internal communication will reduce tension, foster inclusiveness, and enhance support for the party’s programs.

“Party unity must be nurtured continuously in order to sustain the gains and to secure the future.

“We therefore reaffirm our loyalty to the APC and our support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“The CPC family remains a vital pillar of the APC and will continue to play a responsible role in its growth and the progress of Nigeria.”

    ‘El-Rufai is selfish’

Corroborating the position of leaders of the CPC bloc in the APC that they remain an integral part of the ruling party, a former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Farouk Aliyu, said those spreading the rumour that the bloc will quit are mischievous.

He also described former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai as a “selfish politician”.

Speaking on television last night, he said El-Rufai, who played a leading role in President Tinubu’s victory, became bitter when he could not get a ministerial slot.

Aliyu, who is a close ally of Buhari, said the CPC bloc within the APC won’t dump the party no matter what.

He said: “It is not true; there is nothing like members of the defunct CPC wanting to move out of APC.

“Our certificate, the certificate of CPC, was part of what formed APC. So, how can we leave? To go where? This is our party.”

He noted that Buhari did not endorse El-Rufai’s defection from the APC to the SDP.

Aliyu urged the APC leadership to engage all blocs within the ruling party to prevent competition and disunity before the next poll.

“Politics is about engagement. Politics is about the interests of groups, people and so on.

“That is what we are saying: engage more; not only with people from the defunct CPC, but even from the PDP, so that in 2027, there will be less competition,” he said.

Plateau bans night grazing, restores vigilante patrols

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang yesterday took measures to halt the incessant attacks on rural communities by gunmen.

“To restore calm and strengthen vigilance, I hereby announce the following measures, effective Wednesday, April 16.

Also yesterday, seven people were feared killed in fresh attacks in  Adamawa and seven in Benue communities.

Miffed by the pattern of violence in the North, House of Representatives Speaker Abbas Tajudeen and former Senate President David Mark urged Nigerians to cooperate with government and security agencies in their efforts to end the killings.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who expressed concern about the ugly trend, said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is unrelenting in getting to the root cause and ending the malady.

Plateau won’t succumb to fear, says governor

Mutfwang, who convened an emergency security meeting and consulted the President and security chiefs, urged calm, saying that Plateau would not succumb to fear.

He thanked the President for instructing security agencies to take decisive steps to apprehend the perpetrators of the attacks.

Mutfwang said: “Security deployments are being reinforced, and Operation Rainbow is being restructured to support community stabilization efforts.

“Additionally, all hospitals in the region have been directed to provide free medical treatment to victims, and relief supplies are already being dispatched to affected communities.”

The governor acknowledged that the attacks are not ordinary, pointing out that concerted efforts were being made by those behind it to destabilise the state.

He stressed: “Let us be clear: this is not random violence. This is not an isolated conflict between farmers and herders. What we are witnessing is a systematic and premeditated campaign—one that seeks to displace, destabilize, and instill terror and fear on our people and communities.

“The tragic echoes of Dogo Na Hawa, Riyom, Barkin-Ladi, Mangu, and the Christmas Eve massacres in Bokkos remain vivid. The cycle continues, but it must not endure., enough is enough.

“As your governor, I stand resolved, Plateau shall not be overrun by fear, nor shall we accept this culture of bloodshed as the new normal. My administration is intensifying efforts to protect our people and enforce the rule of law across all local governments.”

Reiterating his determination to protect lives and property, Mutfwang also urged traditional leaders and youth associations to reactivate local vigilante groups and organize night patrols in coordination with the security agencies.

He however, added that while protecting the communities, there should be adherence to the rule of law.

7 killed, vehicles destroyed in Adamawa attacks

No fewer than seven people have  been killed by Boko Haram insurgents who attacked two communities in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

The attacks took place at Banga and Larh communities when the insurgents stormed the communities with guns and explosive devices, killing their victims and bombing vehicles along the way.

In Banga, a vigilante was killed by a detonated bomb, two other men were shot down, and a woman fell and died as she made to run away.

The attack left an unnamed boy unaccounted for, though his phone was said to have been ringing when his family and friends were trying to contact him. The calls were unanswered.

Among assets that were destroyed was a police van from nearby Garaha, which was stationed in Banga. It was destroyed by a Boko Haram bomb.

The Chairman of Hong Local Government Area, Usman Wa’aganda confirmed that seven died in the attacks.

‘Attacks in Benue for land grabbing’

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia  expressed worry over the attacks on communities, the latest being Otobi in Otukpo Local Government Area that claimed seven lives.

Alia announced the deployment of security personnel to Otobi,  adding that some arrests have been made in connection with the killings.

The governor, who spoke with reporters in Makurdi, said: “As I speak, we lost eleven people, there are some villagers who are still missing, we are hoping that they will be found. Since last night we deployed, through the security heads our security apparatuses to calm the situation.”

He added: “Earlier this morning, the deputy governor was directed to move in, and later part of the morning, the homeland security with the Commissioner of Police were already on ground there not just to build hope again but for the entire space to be secured”.

He expressed the hope that Otukpo Local Government Area, particularly Otobi, would be calm, assuring that his administration would support the families of the victims.

Alia described the new style of attacks and killings as land grabbing, urging the people to be at alert and report strange circumstances to security agencies.

He said: “We have horrible, terrible fighters in the Frontline. They come and they kill any person, irrespective of ethnicity. So, they kill them, all the residents run away. They go back for a few weeks and then, they come back in full fledge for occupation. This is land grabbing.”

IGP confirms arrest of two suspects

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the killing in Bokkos, Plateau State.

He said the suspects are giving the police information on the ongoing investigation.

Egbetokun said  the Nigeria Police Force is diligently working to uncover the motives behind these attacks, identify and apprehend other suspects involved in the killings.

He described the killings as senseless and uncalled-for, adding that he has ordered additional deployment of officers to restore normalcy.

    Tajudeen: enough of killings

Speaker Tajudeen condemned the attacks, urging security agencies to take a decisive action to end the “barbaric acts.”

The in a statement by Musa AbdullahKrishi, sent condolences to the family of victims.

He said: “I am indeed, saddened by the latest killings in some communities in Plateau State. It is unfortunate that innocent Nigerians get killed in a most barbaric and brutal manner. Enough of the killings on the Plateau and other parts of the country.

“In line with the earlier directive by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to the security agencies to fish out the killers of innocent Nigerians on the Plateau and other parts of the country, I call on them to intensify efforts.”

    ‘President not relenting’

Idris said President Tinubu is doing everything possible to end insecurity, urging Nigerians to cooperate with the security agencies.

He said government’s seriousness is underscored by the massive investments in the acquisition of modern military assets, training and retraining of the Armed Forces and security personnel, and the strengthening of intelligence-gathering mechanisms.

The minister spoke at the Defence Headquarters First Quarter Media Stakeholders Seminar, in Abuja with the theme: “Media as a key component of Joint Task Force Commanders’ Operational Success.”

Idris said: “Insecurity and terrorism are not uniquely Nigerian challenges. They are global threats that even the most advanced and sophisticated nations of the world continue to grapple with.

“From Europe to the Middle East, from North America to Africa, the reality of today’s world is that no country is entirely immune from the scourge of violent extremism and organized criminality.

“However, what truly makes the difference is how nations respond. The Tinubu administration is unrelenting in its commitment to overcoming these threats and ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians.”

“Under the Eight-Point Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration, the cardinal objective is undoubtedly to guarantee our national security through clear and strategic focus on investing in the right tools, systems, and personnel, to secure our nation.

The minister, who was represented by the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Jibrin Ndace, described the seminar as “timely and noble initiative”, which reflected deep understanding of the Chief of Defence on the critical role of communication in modern warfare, “especially in an era where information can influence outcomes as much as firepower.”

The Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru, said the military must explore innovative ways to pass adequate information about troops operations to the public.

Badaru said that by doing so, they would be able to win public trust, enhance unity and check fake news.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, who was represented by the Chief of Defence Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde, said the event was significant due to evolvement of the role of the media in modern warfare beyond its traditional scope of information dissemination.

He said: “The contemporary security landscape is not only characterised by conventional and asymmetric threats, but also involves a battle of narrative among opposing forces. Accordingly, the information space is becoming as equally contested as the battlefield. This implies that how we communicate our mission, counter misinformation and maintain public trust is crucial to the outcome of Joint Task Force operations.”

Nigerians should rally round Mutfwang, says Abdulrazaq

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) urged community and religious leaders to rally round the Plateau governor to end the senseless blood bath.

The forum said it is “deeply saddened by reports of new violence in parts of Plateau State, leading to multiple deaths and injuries.”

In a statement, its chairman and Kwara State Governor Abdulraman AbdulRazaq commiserated with the government and people of Plateau at this trying time.

He added: “We call on community and religious leaders to rally behind Governor Caleb Mutfwang to douse tension, reconcile minds, and build sustainable peace in Plateau.

“We call on everyone to understand that the souls already lost are not just numbers; they are the bread winners, hopes, and pride of many families.

“We call for immediate cessation of violence of any kind against fellow members of the human community. We pray for the repose of the souls of the victims and wish those injured speedy recovery, while everyone embraces dialogue and peace.”

Plateau in Diaspora urges govt to apprehend killers

Plateau Indigenes abroad have deplored the wave of killings and urged the Federal Government to take decisive steps to end the callous acts.

The Plateau Association (USA) Incorporated (PSA-USA), said the killings “are not isolated incidents or mere clashes but deliberate acts of terror, targeting peaceful communities with impunity.”

The group, in a statement by its President, Dr. Bartholomew Shepkong, said: “enough is enough of the continued killings.”

He said: “The time for words has passed. Now is the time for justice.

“The association calls for immediate and decisive action from the government of Nigeria and the international community:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must respond with urgency and leadership, demonstrating the political will to bring these atrocities to an end.

“Security agencies must fulfill their constitutional obligation by identifying, arresting, and prosecuting all those responsible.

“The international community must recognise the ongoing violence in Plateau and Nigeria’s Middle Belt as a growing humanitarian and human rights crisis and respond with the seriousness it deserves.

“The memories of the innocent demand more than our grief—they demand our action.

“These brutal and coordinated assaults resulted in the slaughter of scores of innocent men, women and children; the destruction of homes, and the displacement of entire families.

“These are not isolated incidents or mere ‘clashes’—they are deliberate acts of terror, targeting peaceful communities with impunity.

“Let us be clear—this is not a conflict. It is targeted, coordinated violence. It is ethnic cleansing by another name.”

    Olawepo-Hashim condems violence

Former presidential candidate Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim condemned the renewed wave of violence in Plateau and Ondo States.

He described the persistent killings as a tragic reflection of the failing security architecture.

In a statement in Abuja, Hashim lamented the bloodshed and called for urgent security  reforms.

“How many more innocent lives must be lost before real and lasting solutions are implemented? When will this bloodletting stop?” he queried.

Olawepo-Hashim the centralised nature of Nigeria’s security structure has become overstretched and ineffective in responding swiftly to threats at the grassroots.

Olawepo-Hashim also identified poor cooperation with neighbouring countries as a major contributor to the current insecurity, citing the free inflow of arms and bandits across the country’s borders as a lingering threat.

He added: “Bandits and terrorists now operate with calculated ease, simply relocating from areas of intensified Federal Military presence to regions with low or delayed security attention,” he said, noting a pattern of violence shifting from the North East, to the North West, and now to the North Central.

Describing the trend as an “adaptive insurgency,” Olawepo- Hashim stressed that the country shoul adopt a decentralised and intelligence driven security strategy that includes full collaboration with subnational governments and regional partners.

He said: “What is going on in Nigeria are not isolated communal disputes, but coordinated rural and semi-urban guerrilla warfare by a motley alliance of forces of terror and banditry that have chosen the entire Northern Nigeria as their theatre of operation.

“Our heart goes to the families and communities who lost their loved ones and those who are wounded, we pray for strength for them and speedy recovery.”

JUST IN: CBEX investors will get their money back, EFCC assures

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has assured individuals who invested in the CBEX digital trading platform that they would recover their funds.

The commission revealed that it had been monitoring the platform even before the recent wave of public complaints.

CBEX, which had promised investors a 100 percent return on investment, faced a crisis over the weekend as many users reported being unable to withdraw their funds, sparking outrage on social media.

On Monday, angry investors reportedly stormed and looted the office of Smart Treasure, an affiliate of CBEX, located in the Oke Ado area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

Speaking during Channels TV’s Morning Brief on Wednesday, EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that the anti-graft agency had been fielding numerous calls from Nigerians seeking information and solutions regarding the CBEX platform.

Oyewale stressed that the EFCC had profiled the platform long before the recent outcry and had previously warned Nigerians about potential Ponzi schemes.

“We were not waiting for Nigerians to call us before we started our work, of course, we have been working,” he said.

“We were not beaten by what actually happened. Our dragnet is wide, our intelligence is very effective, and we were tracking that digital trading platform.”

He added, “We were tracking it, and we profiled several things concerning the platform. You will recall that March 11 this year, the executive chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, had called to instruct us to alert Nigerians.”

Oyewale also recalled that the EFCC had earlier listed 58 suspected Ponzi scheme companies in March to caution the public.

“That shows that we are proactive and we have our hands on what is happening. So concerning this investigation, we were on it; it’s not that we didn’t know.

“We’ve been alerting Nigerians about ways and means of how to separate themselves from this kind of shenanigans.

“Before the calls came, we were working, while the calls are coming, we are working; And even after the calls, we are still working.”

He added that the commission would continue educating the public on how to identify fraudulent investment schemes.

“The essential thing is that, of course, we are going to recall some of the things that Nigerians should be looking out for, you know, concerning this kind of investment schemes and all of that.”

On the fate of investors’ funds, Oyewale gave an assurance that recovery efforts were underway, though the process might take time.

“No, it will be very irresponsible and unprofessional if the EFCC says that you have lost your money; there is nothing the commission can do about it.

“We are already working with Interpol and our international development agencies to ensure that these people are brought to book.

“Investors are going to get their money back, and we are already working on that. Everything I’m saying is that this kind of thing could have been averted.

“Be it as it may, it was not averted, we are not going to throw our hands out helplessly and say that there’s nothing EFCC can do about it.

“We are more responsible and professional than that. We have spread out our wings by talking to Interpol and the necessary agencies across the world to be able to bring all the actors to book, and investors will have their money back.”

Oyewale, however, cautioned that while the process might not yield immediate results, the EFCC remains committed to ensuring that investors do not lose their money.
