  • NEPAD boss seeks workers’ commitment to agency’s goals

    Eric Ikhilae, Abuja

National Coordinator of the African Union Development Agency/New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Princess Gloria Akobundu has urged the organisation’s staff to be more committed to service.

Akobundu noted that the staff’s commitment was central to the realisation of the organisation’s key objective of aiding development in the continent.

She spoke at a two-day capacity-building workshop for staff organised by the AUDA-NEPAD in Abuja.

Represented by the Deputy Director Administration and Finance (DAF), Jubril Muhammed, Akobundu, who is also the agency’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), was optimistic that the training “will greatly enhance staff’s efficiency and increase productivity.

She noted that the focus of the training, which include public service rules; guidelines on appointment, promotion and discipline, and financial regulation for the staff of the administrative department is intended to aid the staff in their contributions to the realisation of the organisation’s goals and objectives.

  • Democrats unveil impeachment charges against Trump

Democrats in the House of Representatives yesterday announced formal charges against President Donald Trump, accusing him of abusing power and obstructing Congress.

This had made him only the fourth U.S. president in history to face impeachment.

The full Democratic-controlled House is expected to vote on the charges, or articles of impeachment, next week.

It is almost certain to vote to impeach the Republican president, setting the stage for a dramatic trial in the Republican-controlled Senate, likely to begin in January.

The House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Jerrold Nadler, said that Democrats had to take action because Trump had endangered the U.S. Constitution, undermined the integrity of the 2020 election and jeopardised national security.

“No one, not even the president, is above the law,” Nadler said at a news conference that included House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic leaders of committees involved in the impeachment probe.

“Our elections are a cornerstone of democracy … the integrity of our next election is at risk from a president, who has already sought foreign interference in the 2016 and 2020 elections,” Nadler said.

Trump has denied wrongdoing and calls the inquiry a hoax. The White House has refused to participate in the hearings in the House because it says the process is unfair.

Trump attacked the impeachment effort in a Twitter post early on Tuesday, saying to impeach a president when the country has such a strong economy “and most importantly, who has done NOTHING wrong, is sheer Political Madness!”

Democrats have moved rapidly in their impeachment inquiry since launching an investigation on Sept. 24 into allegations that Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate a Democratic political rival and former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 elections.

They accuse Trump of abusing power by withholding aid to Ukraine, a vulnerable U.S. ally facing Russian aggression, as well as dangling a possible White House meeting to get Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to launch the investigation.

Republicans said Democrats are seeking to overturn the results of the 2016 election with a “witch hunt” against Trump, who denies he did anything wrong.

“Americans don’t agree with this rank partisanship, but Democrats are putting on this political theatre because they don’t have a viable candidate for 2020 and they know it,” Brad Parscale, Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign manager, said in a statement.

Trump is unlikely to be convicted in the Senate, given it is controlled by his party, but his impeachment may yet have an impact on the campaign trail as Democrats seek to retake control of the White House.

The House Judiciary panel could vote this week on whether to send the formal charges to the full House.

Pelosi launched the impeachment probe after a whistleblower reported concerns over a July 25 in which Trump sought help from Zelenskiy to investigate Biden, a leading contender in the Democratic race to challenge Trump in next November’s election.

That led to weeks of investigation and hearings in the House. Committee leaders met with Pelosi following the last scheduled impeachment hearing on Monday.

Democrats say their investigation shows Trump withheld 391 million dollars in military aid and the White House meeting to get Zelenskiy to investigate Biden and his son Hunter Biden, as well as a debunked theory that Ukraine, not Russia, interfered in the 2016 U.S. election.

Republicans argue Trump did nothing improper in his call with Zelenskiy and say there is no direct evidence he withheld aid or a White House meeting in exchange for a favour.

The Judiciary Committee would need to give 24 hours’ notice before meeting to vote on whether to forward the articles to the full House for a final impeachment vote by the chamber.

If the House of Representatives votes to pass articles of impeachment, the Senate is forced to hold a trial.

A Senate vote requires a two-thirds majority to convict and remove the president – unlikely in this case, given that Trump’s party controls the chamber.

Only two U.S. presidents in history – Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson – have been impeached, but neither was convicted.

President Richard Nixon resigned before he could be impeached.

  • Agbese: Public affairs commentator set to launch book on President Buhari

Chief Executive Officer of TheNigerian-a news portal that focuses on developmental issues within Nigeria with grip on trending global issues- Mr. Philip Agbese, is set to launch a book on President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Book, Integrity Vs Power Play: Understanding the Buhari Phenomenon is a literary document that introduces fresh perspectives into the gamut of issues surrounding the Buhari persona and goes beneath the veneer of public discourse to connect major and minor events in the life of the Nigerian President with how Nigeria is being transformed for the better since the advent of the current administration.

Written in lurid prose, the author makes no pretense about his adroitness with the subject matter as he walked through the maze of several issues right from the early days of the Nigerian President to now and explains with ease what had stood as labyrinthine contours and conjectures with lucidity and clarity.
The currency of the book against the background of its historical depth stands as one of its major selling point as it marries the past and the present in a manner that no work on the president has done that both researchers and those content with trendy news would find a common ground.

The book is edited by Professor Bitrus Gwamna, a professor of political science based in the US while the forward is written by George Kieh , a political researcher and one time  presidential candidate in Liberia.

It will be unveiled at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on the 30th  December, 2019.

  • Miss South Africa wins 2019 Miss Universe crown

Miss South Africa was crowned Miss Universe on Sunday in Atlanta, United States (U.S.) after a lavish ceremony filled with glitter and heartfelt speeches about female empowerment.

Zozibini Tunzi, 26, finished first ahead of the Puerto Rican and Mexican finalists in a flashy televised event, hosted by American comic turned TV personality Steve Harvey.

Television personalities Vanessa Lachey and Olivia Culpo served as backstage commentators, and a panel of seven women determined the winner.

Tunzi earned cheers during her closing speech, a new segment of the competition, in which she talked about wanting to empower young women to feel confident.

“I grew up in a world where a woman who looks like me, with my kind of skin and my kind of hair, was never considered to be beautiful,” she said.

“I think that it is time that that stops today,” she said to thunderous applause.

Tunzi beat more than 90 contestants from around the globe in the 68th instalment of Miss Universe, which was held in Atlanta’s Tyler Perry Studios.

The two favorites ahead of the competition, Miss Thailand Paweensuda Saetan-Drouin and Miss Philippines Gazini Ganados, did not make it to the final 10.

  • A welcome relief

A FIRST indication that South Africa is ready to take decisive step against violent crimes in the society, even where the victims are foreigners, especially Nigerians, came with the December 2 sentencing of a police constable for robbing and killing a Nigerian. The constable, Austin Reynolds, had shot an innocent Nigerian, Mr. Ebuka Okoli, at close range for no just cause. The constable thought nothing of snuffing life out of a fellow human being. He had no respect for the sanctity of life, the nicety of following the rule of law and respecting the fundamental rights of all, citizen or resident.

The constable who committed the crime in January 2018 probably thought nothing would happen since Okoli is a Nigerian and thus endangered in the jungle that the South African society is turning to. In recent times, South Africa has always been in the news for xenophobic attacks. Many foreigners, especially Nigerians, Zimbabweans and Mozambicans have borne the brunt of the anger of the youth who blame the foreigners for the high rate of unemployment and poverty in their country. The result has been wanton looting, assault and murder on Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg streets.

The diligent prosecution of the killer cop by the South African police, coming shortly after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s pledge to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari that all those involved in attacking foreigners in the country would be brought to justice is commendable. We hope this would serve as deterrence to the blood-thirsty youth seeking whom to devour in a country where Nigeria and the frontline Southern African states played major roles in ending the obnoxious apartheid policy.

However, anyone who thinks this single action is enough to curb the violent attacks is in mere delusion. Pressure on the South African authorities by African leaders must continue, with appropriate sanctions applied when necessary if the people are to be compelled to respect the rights of others.

President Ramaphosa and his people should take more fundamental actions in tackling the inequality in the country, improve on the educational system with a view to enlightening the people about the gallant roles played by other countries in the liberation struggle, as well as ensure wide range reform of the justice system. Those arrested in connection with the xenophobic attacks should be speedily brought to justice to demonstrate the government’s commitment to building a modern country, not a jungle.

Crime statistics from that country are frightening. A woman is killed every three hours, while 100 are raped daily. This has necessitated the deployment of 1,300 soldiers to the seedy streets of Cape Town alone as the South African Defence Force had to launch an ‘Operation Lockdown’ in the city. A lot more has to be done and new strategies introduced to combat general violence in the major cities, while other African countries, especially Nigeria, should be assured in action that the country is safe for all. These are sister-countries that the black race looks up to if other races are to respect us. Today, Africa remains the poorest continent in the world. Diseases that have long been eradicated in other countries are still very much with us in Africa, while many live in slums and unplanned cities. The standard of living remains unbearable.

Justice, swiftly delivered as in the case of this killer constable, will go a long way in reassuring Nigerians that President Ramaphosa is determined to deliver on his promises.

  • Scores killed in India factory fire

A large fire has swept through a bag factory in the Indian capital Delhi, killing 43 workers, officials say.

The blaze broke out at the four-storey building in the city’s congested old quarter early yesterday morning.

At least 100 people were sleeping inside the factory, which mainly makes school bags, when the fire started. More than 60 have been rescued.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the fire “horrific” and sent his condolences.

Delhi’s firefighters received the first call about the fire at 05:22 local time yesterday.

The fire began on the lower storeys, spreading rapidly to the third floor where workers were sleeping.

“We woke up with cries and shouts for help,” said Ronak Khan, a 17-year-old living next door.

“I saw people trapped. We asked them to come to the rooftop so that we could rescue them but they were not able to come up.”

The area where the factory is located – Azad Market – is a web of narrow alleyways, which made it difficult to reach the blaze.

Rescuers had to carry out victims on their shoulders one-by-one with firefighters cutting away window grills to access the building.

A local fire chief told BBC Hindi’s Dilnawaz Pasha the building did not have a proper fire licence and was operating illegally as a factory.

It is not clear what caused the blaze but an investigation has been ordered.

An initial probe and eyewitnesses suggested a short circuit may have been to blame.

Victims’ relatives have been scrambling for information. One man told India’s PTI agency his brother was inside.

Indian cities have often seen deadly fires, with poor planning and lax enforcement of safety regulations major factors.

Indian politicians have been expressing their horror at the blaze.

“The fire in Delhi’s Anaj Mandi on Rani Jhansi Road is extremely horrific,” Prime Minister Modi tweeted.

“My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. Wishing the injured a quick recovery. Authorities are providing all possible assistance at the site of the tragedy.”

Home Minister Amit Shah called it a “tragic loss of precious lives”.

  • UK parties in final campaign push for Thursday election

THE main political party leaders are continuing to push their election pledges to voters, as the campaign enters its final few days.

Conservative leader Boris Johnson said in an open letter that Thursday’s poll is “historic” and a choice to “move forwards” after Brexit.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said it was a “chance to vote for hope” and he had “the most ambitious plan to transform our country in decades”.

The UK goes to the polls on Thursday.

Ahead of this, the candidates are travelling around the country in a bid to spread their election messages.

Among the manifesto pledges being highlighted by the main UK parties yesterday are:

    *A Conservative promise to introduce an Australian-style points-based immigration system to control unskilled migration;

*A Labour plan to “head off the social care crisis” by offering free personal care for older people in England and an additional £10bn of funds by 2023-24; and

*A “regional rebalancing” programme from the Lib Dems, which would see £50bn invested in infrastructure outside of London.

Meanwhile, SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon is warning that “the very future of Scotland” is at stake in the election.

She is appealing to voters to back her party “to escape Brexit, protect the NHS, and to put Scotland’s future in Scotland’s hands”.

And Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson told Sky News her party was looking to make “real progress” by increasing its number of MPs on Thursday.

She added: “We will be absolutely working to stop Brexit, doing so in a co-operative way with others who share our values and share that goal.”

In his letter to voters published in the Mail yesterday, Johnson says the election will be one that “shapes future decades”, urging voters to create a “working Conservative majority government that will get Brexit done, end the uncertainty and allow Britain to move on”.

The Conservatives have released some details about how their points-based immigration system would work.

Writing in the Yesterday Express, Home Secretary Priti Patel, said it would start in January 2021 and aimed to “attract the best talent that our country and economy needs, while reducing overall numbers”.

There would be fast-track entry to the UK for entrepreneurs and some people working for the NHS, and sector-specific schemes for low or unskilled workers to meet labour market shortages.

Speaking to Sky News, Johnson declined to say if he would resign if he failed to win a majority in the House of Commons.

He said: “What I’m going to do is concentrate on the five days before us, because that is what I think the people of this country would expect.”

In the same interview, the prime minister insisted there would not be any checks for goods travelling from Northern Ireland to Great Britain under his Brexit deal.

A leaked Treasury analysis document was “wrong” to suggest this would be the case, he said.

And in a short speech at the Conservative Party’s headquarters, Johnson warned his supporters that the “horses can still change places” in the final week of the campaign, saying: “This is a close-fought election.”

Meanwhile, Labour is restating its plan to help alleviate pressure in social care through the introduction of free personal care for older people.

The party said its new funding will help working-age adults and pensioners with care costs, which will also be capped under the proposals.

According to the King’s Fund, providing free personal care would require an additional £6bn on top of planned spending by 2020-21, taking the social care budget to roughly £26bn.

Labour is also talking about its own research on the issue, which it says shows 9,290 people have approached their local authority since April 2017 for help with care costs after draining their savings.

At a rally at Bangor University in north Wales, Corbyn attacked “cruel” Universal Credit – which his party has said it would scrap.

He also repeated his pledge to compensate so-called Waspi women, who lost out on years of state pension payments when the retirement age was raised under the coalition government.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show that Labour would “transform our economy” if it won a parliamentary majority at the election.

He added: “I want to make sure our economy works for everybody… It means transforming capitalism into a new form.”

Johnson said he wants to focus on people’s priorities, including urgent investment in the NHS and action on the cost of living.

Speaking ahead of the last stretch on the campaign trail, Corbyn said Johnson “cannot be trusted to deliver Brexit, or anything else”.

He said Labour would “rescue” the NHS and “get Brexit sorted”.

Elsewhere, the Lib Dems said their plans would “address the historic investment disparities between our nations and regions”.

Its plans would boost railway electrification, increase the availability of charging points for electric vehicles and improve broadband access, the party added.

On the campaign trail in Sheffield, Liberal Democrat leader Ms Swinson also encouraged her supporters to make a final push for votes, telling them: “When you wake up and deliver those ‘good mornings’ when there’s frost on the ground, I want you to know that everything that you do will make that difference.”

    Olukunle Akinrinade, Jerusalem

Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Mr Tayo Ayinde made the remarks at the hoisting of the Nigerian flag on a boat cruise for the pilgrims on Sea of Jordan.

He noted that the pilgrimage had been devoid of hiccup, urging the state’s pilgrims to imbibe the virtues inherent in the pilgrimage.

He said: “The lesson and virtue of the pilgrimage is tolerance. This is because despite the fact that participants belong to different denominations, they have bonded and freely interacted with one another peaceably without any acrimony or segregation.
