    Council deliberates on budget

    Eti-Osa Local Government, Lagos has held stakeholders’ consultative forum meeting.

    The meeting which took place at the secretariat attracted diverse group of participants.

    It was aimed at gathering input and feedback from the community regarding the next year’s budget.

    Chairman of the council, Saheed Bankole, who was represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Idowu Badru, spoke about the importance of a budget that is in tandem with the needs and aspirations of the people.

    He emphasized the need to prioritize the provision of basic amenities in the area of health, education, sanitation as well as youth and women empowerment programmes.

    Badru urged the people to continue to support the government in its quest to make Eti-Osa a better place for all.

    The participants were engaged in insightful discussions and shared ideas on budget implementation.

    They also made suggestions on how the budget can be structured to maximize its impact on the people. Emphasis was also laid on the need for the government to allocate funds for the maintenance and construction of roads, provision of potable water, and also to prioritize youth and women empowerment programmes that will engage them productively.

    Embrace HPV vaccine, others, Perm Sec tells council residents

    The Permanent Secretary, Health District IV in the Lagos state Ministry of Health, Dr Abimbola Bowale, has urged residents of Lagos Island and environs to embrace the HPV vaccine being administered on women across the state .

    He said the vaccines and all other ones being given out have no side effects.

    Dr Bowale spoke during a sensitisation meeting and engagement with community stakeholders at the Christ Church Cathedral Primary School, Lagos Island.

    He explained that immunization has been used to eradicate diseases in the past and has been brought back once again to help fight against cancer and other diseases.

    “For a very long time, immunization has been deployed or has been used to eliminate certain diseases that affect humans. There was a time that small pox was a killer disease but it is no longer with us because immunization was deployed and then it was given to people all over the world. Today, small pox has been eradicated. So many other diseases too that usually kill people in the past have been eradicated using immunization,” he said.

    According to him, government introduced the HPV vaccine to prevent certain form of cancer and this cancer kills a lot of our women.

    Dr Bowale assured Lagosians that there are no side effects to the vaccines being given out and they should shun all forms of rumours as regards the HPV vaccine.

    Chairman of Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area Muibi Folawiyo urged the leadership of various Community Development Areas (CDAs) to educate residents on the need to embrace the vaccine.

    “Our female children should go and get the vaccine. We need to stay clear of cancer and protect ourselves from other diseases,” he said.

    The Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Dr Mojeed Balogun, yesterday promised that next year’s budget would meet the yearnings of the people.

    Balogun said it has been the culture of the council to take the residents into cognisance in the preparation of the budget.

    He spoke during a budget retreat tagged “Budget of the infrastructural development” at the Continental suites, Ibara, Ogun State.

    Balogun said the budget will reflect a strategic allocation of resources to meet the demands of the people.

    Priority, he said, would be given to roads and schools construction and rehabilitation and healthcare provisions.

    The retreat, he added, was to invest in the foundation that sustains the council’s collective well-being.

    He said: “We acknowledge the strides made in the past, yet we look ahead with a fervent determination to create an environment that not only meets the needs of today but anticipates those of the future.

    “Our budgetary allocations should reflect a strategic focus on key areas such as infrastructural development, healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation amongst other areas. By investing in these pillars, we aim to lay the groundwork for a community that is resilient, connected, and equipped for the challenges and opportunities of the coming years.

    “We are fast completing the Legacy Projects – the New Legislative building, the New Administrative Secretariat and Office Complex. We also facilitated a working relationship between the council and Federal Government which came about the construction of an Ultra-Modern Primary Health Care Centre – all within the council premises.”

    Balogun added that their shared vision for a vibrant and thriving Ikeja Local Government is within reach, and the budget plan serves as the roadmap to turn that vision into reality.

    “Our budget is not just a financial document; it is a roadmap to a brighter future. As we embark on this journey of continuous infrastructural development, let us remember that the success of our endeavours lies in the strength of our unity and the sincerity of our shared purpose,” he said.

    Senbanjo unveils plans for Apapa residents

    The Chairman of Apapa Local Government Idowu Senbanjo has unveiled her vision for the year 2024, emphasizing key areas of focus and outlining challenges faced by the local administration.

    Speaking on the sidelines of a Budget Retreat at Whispering Palms Hotel and Resort, Lagos, the council boss expressed her commitment to addressing the pressing needs and aspirations of the community, including infrastructure, education, environment, and security.

    She highlighted these four pillars as central to the 2024 budget, stressing the importance of collaboration and feedback from stakeholders in shaping the local government’s agenda.

    However, the council chair acknowledged the difficulties encountered in engaging with some big firms and agencies of the government including the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), citing unresponsiveness and challenges in obtaining meaningful dialogue with the organisations.

    She described the NPA’s lack of accommodation and responsiveness as a hurdle to progress, particularly in light of the impact of heavy truck traffic on local roads and the environment.

    Senbanjo commended the efforts of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for their initiatives, including the installation of solar lights in the locality. Despite this, he expressed the community’s continued expectation for more significant contributions as a host community.

    The Chairman also acknowledged the dedication and hard work of local government staff, while encouraging them to seek opportunities for individual contributions to the overall development of the council.

    She expressed gratitude for their support and looked forward to further progress in 2024.

    Supervisor for Budget, Tosan Wiltshire reiterated the council’s priority for roads, schools, and all other essential infrastructure to enhance the lives of the residents.

    He underscored the importance of strategic planning in a relaxed atmosphere to facilitate clear and thoughtful decision-making.

    He said the council is poised to ensuring transparency and visibility in the implementation of the capital projects, emphasizing the need for the community to be fully informed and involved in the development initiatives.

    A consultant, Dr. Olushoga Gbadebo, emphasized the need for the local government to prioritize effective revenue collection and transparent budgeting processes.

    He urged the council leadership to engage consultants in revenue collection efforts.

    He affirmed that the local government is open to receiving feedback and queries from the public in order to ensure that the provisions outlined in the budget are reasonable and attainable.

    The Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, (LCDA) has held stakeholders’ meeting on budget.

    Chairman of the council, Alhaja Fumilayo Akande-Mohammed stated that the forum was meant for the people at the community level that are far from the federal government but rely on the local government for their socioeconomic needs.

    “The importance of this meeting is to have robust discussion and know the expectation of the people so as to include them in the budget,” she said.

    She emphasised that the forum would be used as an avenue to highlight critical issues, challenges and necessary solution to the problems affecting the growth of the community, adding that all the residents must be committed to the state of their environment.

    The council boss highlighted some of the executed projects which include construction of roads with walk way, drainage system, culverts at Akorede/layeni street, Osimhen street and Ashimawu Abeo street, free skill acquisition programmes, free distribution of GCE and JAMB forms, free Health services and donation of tricycles and mini buses for empowerment.

    She implored the residents to pay their rates and levies. The council chair promised to fulfill requests of the residents.     Igbogbo-Baiyeku to equip Lagos estate’s health centre

    The Chairman of Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos, Olusesan Daini, has promised to assist residents of Oba Adeboruwa Housing Estate on Baiyeku Road, Igbogbo to equip their health centre.

    Daini was invited by the Chief Executive Officer/General Manager of Lagos Home Ownership Mortgage Scheme (LagosHoms) Bayowa Foresythe to the Stakeholders’ Forum organised by LagosHoms.

    Earlier, Foresythe thanked him for helping out with infrastructure for the Ibeshe scheme.

    The LagosHoms boss said he specially invited Daini to also assist with ongoing Primary Healthcare Centre in the estate and road leading to the estate.

    Foresythe said: “I know your capacity; I know what you can do. I know what is within your reach; you’re somebody those at the top value very much. I know you do have one-on-one with Mr Governor and the Deputy Governor.

    “We would appreciate if you could use your influence to ensure work on the road leading to this estate is  accelerated.

    “The other thing is about the clinic. Mr Chairman, I think it is something you might want to help with. We have put in much effort to build it.  We want the council to take over from where we stopped.”

    Foresythe, however, urged the residents to maintain the standard of the infrastructure and ensure its value is not diminished.

    He frowned at rearing of pets and use of generators in the estate, saying that they are against the Memorandum of Understanding signed before receiving allocation letters.

    Daini promised to send a team from the council to inspect the state of the clinic.

    “It is not a bad idea to have a clinic in this estate. Asking me to come and take over is a way of solving some of our challenges because primary health is a co-responsibility of the local government as stipulated in the constitution and that’s what we’re doing for now. If this community have requested for a clinic, I would have look for a way to provide it. Early next year, I will be commissioning a new health center in Oreta which would increase the total of our health centres to 11. The intention of community health centre is to bring health service closer to people and to reduce the stress and the burden on our general hospitals,” he said.

    Daini promised that there would be improvement on the ongoing road construction.

    “We should first commend Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for listening to us and starting the road construction. Where we are today is not where we were this time last year. I promise to do my part; fortunately the Special Adviser to Governor on Works, Adekunle Olayinka, is my best friend. Our Governor is also interested in getting this road completed in record time.”

    The Permanent Secretary, Health District IV in the Lagos state Ministry of Health, Dr Abimbola Bowale, yesterday called on residents of Lagos Mainland Local Government and its environs to avoid mental health issues.

    He urged them to quickly seek help at the closest Primary Healthcare Centre when they feel troubled.

    He gave the advice during a sensitisation meeting and engagement with community stakeholders at Yaba Local Council Development Area, Lagos. 

    According to him, mental health issue is very important aspect of total health care and a lot of reasons could be attributed to people having mental health issues.

    “Even the stress of day-to-day living could be part of it. Economic situation could be part of it; stress from anything – traffic gridlock, not meeting financial obligations – all these can put pressure on individuals. The other thing is drug abuse,” he said.

    Dr Bowale said staff at various Primary Healthcare centres (PHCs) have been trained by the Ministry of Health to be able to identify early signs of mental stress and offer solutions in terms counselling, referral and other intervention that could help resolve them.

    “If you walk into any of our primary healthcare centres, there are individuals that have been trained to counsel, intervene and also refer individuals who have mental issues,” he said.

    He advised Lagosians to take things easy as no condition is permanent.

    Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ebute Meta General Hospital, Dr Juliana Olunuga, said stress is not just about feeling tired, rather it could be caused by many things.

    “The best thing is see your doctor who will diagnose you to know the cause of the stress and be able to advise if it’s rest you need or drugs. You could be referred to other doctors for better treatment,” she said.

    Dr Olunuga cautioned against self-medication, saying “people are even going to spend much more because those drugs you are buying, you don’t know the effect on your body. They might be dangerous and by the time they cause problem for you, you will still end up going to the hospital. So I urge our people to see the doctor first, it’s very key.”

    Head of Special Projects and Mental Health, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Tolu Ajomale, urged Lagosians to avoid having poor mental health.

    “Things you can do to promote mental health include regular exercise, rest, having someone to talk to, spending quality time away from stressful situation; knowing and understanding yourselves by avoiding things that could trigger your poor mental health and create a right environment,” he said.

    According to him, people should not be tired of seeking for help when stressed.

    The newly installed monarch of Iwerekun kingdom in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos, Oba Mufutau Olanrewaju, has expressed the need for old and prospective land owners within his domain to come and regularise their land titles.

    The monarch said the need for the land owners to come forward to get their land documents verified has become inevitable to ensure peaceful and harmonious coexistence between natives and non-natives within the community.

    “It has come to my notice that there are undisclosed number of landed properties within and around our community here in Iwerekun kingdom that have been laying fallow ever since because the owners failed to come and develop them. The result is that criminal elements use these places as hideouts to carry out all forms of criminality and other nefarious activities thereby endangering the lives of other law-abiding citizens of the community.

    “Most of these places are now overgrown with weeds. We don’t want to see bushes or undeveloped lands in our midst anymore,” he stressed, adding “It is so bad that some of the owners of these lands have held these titles for between 10 and 20 years without doing anything concrete on the lands. This is most unfortunate because they are by so doing denying both the community and its people the benefits of socio-economic growth and development that can come to these areas.”

    According to him, the era of brigandage, harassment and intimidation of law-abiding citizens is over as he hopes to ensure equity and justice to all during his reign.

    The monarch said: “Under my reign, I want peace and development for our ancestral land and we are ready to do everything humanly possible to achieve that objective.

    The Chairman of Alimosho Local Government, Jelili Sulaimon, has pledged to address the needs of the residents to enhance their welfare.

    He made this commitment during the stakeholders’ forum held at the council’s secretariat in Akowonjo, where he assured attendees that their needs would be prioritised in the 2024 budget.

    Highlighting the ongoing projects and acknowledging the pressing needs of the residents, the chairman affirmed his determination to complete the existing projects.

    Traditional rulers, including Elegbeda of Egbeda, Oba Hammed Omogoriola Orelope (Laka), and Alaye of Orisunmibare, Oba Akibu Adebowale, were instrumental in voicing the needs of their respective communities.

    LCDA goes digital on revenue generation

    Agbado/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area plans to source its Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR) next year through android phones of residents and business communities in the area.

    This plan was made known by the council chairman, David Oladapo Famuyiwa, in an interview at the Year 2024 Budget Retreat on Thursday.

    Famuyiwa said the digital process of sourcing the IGR of the LCDA will enable the government generate more revenue and block loopholes through which some earnings of the LCDA found its way out of the government purse.

    “We have invited a resource person to lecture us on the process; and the area officers as well as others have been fully tutored on the processes. What the people needed is to link any of the local council accounts to their their phones,” he said.

    The council boss asked all departmental heads to work towards laying foundation for better economic development of the people, which will lead to better financial base of the government to prosecute the programmes of Famuyiwa administration.

    “We are targeting the Year 2024 template towards collaboration with private individuals and corporate organizations to ensure the success of the budget and improved infrastructural development expected of this administration,” he said.

    He affirmed that the theme of Budget of Continuity for the Year 2024 Budget was to continue with projects and programmes of the administration that will solidify the base for economic improvement of the people of Agbodo/Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area.
