    ‘We’re committed to uplifting Eti-Osa’

    Chairman of Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area, John Ogundare, has assured residents of his commitment to the welfare and development of the council.

    Ogundare said this during the Stakeholders’ Budget Forum at the council secretariat, Sangotedo.

    While given stewardship under the period review, the council boss stated that projects are ongoing in Alaguntan, Badore, Oke-Ira, Oke-Ira Nla, and Oke-Ira Kekere

    He proposed the reconstruction of Iyaloja Folasade Ojo Market, due to the above the sea level road constructed by the Federal Government to serve the community.

    He mentioned that Bale Rafiu Ajakaye and Ogudu Ogombo roads would be constructed through Lagos State Government which will be funded by Eti-Osa East.

    Ogundare stressed that Saka Shittu road in Alaguntan is at the final stage. He said the road would aid accessibility of a newly constructed market.

      He urged residents to continue to support the administration by paying their rates and taxes.

    The Igbogbo-Baiyeku Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has held budget consultative forum.

    The event featured inauguration of boreholes in five wards, as well as free medical mission.

    Chairman of the council, Olusesan Daini, who was represented by the Vice Chairman and Supervisor for Education, Okedina Nureini-Maja, emphasized that in the past, these meetings were held in a centralized location for all five wards but it was realized that more community involvement and participation were necessary. He added that to address this, the decision was made to decentralize the meetings and hold them in each ward individually.

    “Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA acknowledges the financial challenges ahead, but they are determined to find innovative solutions. The team’s dedication and commitment to the community will undoubtedly lead to positive outcomes. The upcoming budget retreat will serve as a platform for strategic planning, ensuring that the allocated resources are utilized effectively to meet the needs of Igbogbo-Baiyeku residents,” he said.

    Additionally, the council provided essential medical attention to the elderly and commissioned a borehole at Rabaca bus stop.

    According to Daini, the inauguration of these boreholes and fetching points not only address immediate needs but also signifies the council’s dedication to fostering enduring positive change.

     “Water is an essential resource, and our focus is to improve the quality of life for our residents. These boreholes and fetching points are a step towards building a more sustainable and resilient community,” he said.

    He added that the initiative, spearheaded by the “dedicated” councillors, marks a substantial leap in the LCDA’s commitment to providing essential amenities for its residents.

    Leader of the Legislature, Alimi Alowonle, noted that the council aims to set an exemplary standard for local administration throughout the state while assuring residents of commitment to addressing their needs.

    The councillor representing Ward C5, Habeeb Anifowoshe, hailed the chairman for his “visionary leadership and the implementation of impactful projects”.

    He urged his constituents to exercise patience, as the council boss continues to work diligently to address the needs and aspirations of the community. Princess Basirat Banjoko, representing Ward C1, said: “Access to clean water is a fundamental right, and our efforts are geared towards ensuring every resident has this basic necessity within reach. It’s a step towards healthier living for our community.”

    250 trained in cosmetology, tailoring, computer studies

    In continuation of its determination to empower many residents to become employers of labour, the School of Vocational Training, Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area has churned out a fresh set of 250 graduates who acquired skills in cosmetology, tailoring, shoe making, hairdressing, catering and computer studies during the training.

    Speaking during the school’s graduation ceremony recently, the chairman of the LCDA, Lasisi Ayinde Akinsanya enjoined the graduates to utilise the skills and knowledge acquired in the programme not only for their advancement but also for the betterment of their community and the nation at large.

    Akinsanya said during the programme, which took place under the auspices of the Lagos State Agency for Mass Education, the graduates acquired vocational skills and knowledge that will empower them to overcome the challenges that may hinder them from achieving their dreams.

    He said: “Today, as you stand on the threshold of a new chapter in your lives, remember that your education does not end here; it is just the beginning of a life-learning journey.     The Chairman of Iba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Alhaja Haleemah Folashade, Yisa has lifted 200 widows and aged residents with N20,000 each and clothes.

    Alhaja Yisa said the distribution was aimed at easing the lives of widows and the elderly in the council.

    According to her, the event served as a manifestation of one of the election promises of the Jubril Yisa-led administration to support the aged and widows in the community.

    “Now more than ever, this day is an opportunity for action towards achieving one of our electioneering promises. Recently, the council chairman distributed palliatives for the residents. Empowering our aged and our widows and their families is not limited to financial aids alone, it also means addressing social stigmas that create exclusion, and discriminatory or harmful practices among others,” she added.

    She reiterated the administration’s commitment to upholding the rights of the aged and widows, adhering to international conventions and domestic laws that protect their rights.

     She said: “The Abila-led administration will uphold its commitments to ensure the rights of our aged ones and widows as promised, including the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against our aged ones, women and the Convention on the Rights of every inhabitant, as laws exist to protect the rights of everyone. “We take a look at some of the issues affecting our aged ones and widows within our local government and what must be done to safeguard and advance our lives. Widows must not be left out of our work; we will prioritises their needs and supports for more inclusive, resilient and equality for all”.

    Lagos partners councils on health centres administration

    The Lagos State Government has described local governments across the state as a good ally in the effective administration of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs).

    Permanent Secretary, Health District IV in the state’s Ministry of Health, Dr Abimbola Bowale stated this during a sensitisation meeting and engagement with community stakeholders held at the secretariat of Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Area, Lagos.

    He called on Lagosians to always patronise PHCs, stating that 80 per cent of ailments taking to general hospitals can be addressed at the PHCs.

    “The PHCs was designed to take care of 80 to 90 per cent of the ailments people have. It is supposed to be first point of call for those who are sick. It is closest to them; they are involved in running them and will give them best services at affordable rate,” he said.

    According to him, only cases that cannot be treated at the PHCs should be taken to general hospital through referrals.

    He assured Lagosians that government is building and equipping more PHCs.

    Vice Chairman of Surulere Local Government Prince Adewale Dosunmu, hailed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for decentralising the health sector to cater for more Lagosians.

    Dosunmu said the council is partnering with the Permanent Secretary District IV and health workers to senzitise our people to patronize the PHCs.

    He added that the council make funds available to improve the standard of the centres.

    He urged residents to always patronise the PHCs to reduce pressure on the general hospitals.

    “We have spoken with the Community Development Associations (CDAs) to sensitise their people on the need to take advantage of the PHCs closer to them instead of going to general hospital that is far from homes.  The PHCs are there for them to access and we’ll continue to improve on their standards,” he said.

    Head of Special Projects and Mental Health, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr Tolu Ajomale, identified lack of awareness as the reason for not patronising PHCs.

    Dr Ajomale stated that if the people are aware of all the ailments that could be treated in PHCs, they would patronise it.

    According to him, PHCs have been equipped to cater for over 60 per cent of ailments people taking to general hospitals.

    He noted that the health insurance scheme should as well be well marketed to the grassroots.

    He enjoined Lagosians to avail themselves of the opportunities at the centres.

    Ayobo stakeholders parley on budget

    Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), has held Stakeholders’ meeting to look into its 2024 budget.

    Speaking at the event, which was held at the council’s Secretariat, Chairman of the Council, Mrs Bola Shobowale, said the age-long tradition, was held to provide the residents, a forum to demand for projects and programmes needed in the communities.

    Highlighting some of the Council’s achievements, she noted it has tackled social menace, eradicated dark spots through the establishment of community policing and would be commissioning some of its projects soon.

    According to Mrs. Shobowale, the council has successfully achieved success in 2023, in areas such as: health, education, environment, youth and women development and human capital development.

    “All the requests they made would be met and by the time we call ourselves again for assembly, it would be the commissioning of all these projects. I am assuring them again, that it’s going to be a thing of the past. All the projects would be commissioned by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” she assured.

    Supervisor for Budget and Planning, Damilola Owonla, urged the residents to expect more dividends of democracy in return for their votes.

    “I urge the people to continue to pay their taxes. This would help us improve in our projects to enhance the community and give you more dividends of democracy.

    “Every request made, and everything they mentioned that they need, we will put them into consideration to see which of them would fit into what we have as a budget for the year 2024,” she said.

    The Chairman of Itire-lkate Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Dr Ahmed Olanrewaju Apatira, has commissioned an ultra-modern market named in honour of the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

    The council also inaugurated Itire customary court, library and Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre.

    The Senator representing Lagos Central District, Wasiu Eshilokun-Sanni, commended Apatira for building the market.

    Senator Eshilokun-Sanni underscored the significance of ensuring that the market is celebrated as an embodiment of economic opportunity and community prosperity.

    He urged the future occupants of the market to maintain a welcoming and customer-friendly environment.

    The former Deputy Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly emphasizes the importance of upholding cleanliness, organization, and overall aesthetic appeal to attract customers and sustain a thriving marketplace.

    Senator Eshilokun also praised the chairman for naming the market after Senator Oluremi Tinubu and assured Nigerians of witnessing more improvements in governance.

    Dr Apatira stated that the project aligns with the goal of fostering economic development within the community.

    According to him, the market is strategically located to facilitate trade and boost the local economy, serving as a gateway for international traders and attracting more revenue to the area.

    He noted the market’s potential  to create more job opportunities and promote a safer community.

    The council boss said: “Today we are here to open the 2nd phase of Akorede Ultramodern International Market.

    This edifice is just one of our administrations several sustainable business and economic development infrastructure with the sole of expanding our local and international business reach along Apapa/Oshodi expressway, a major international highway passing through our council.

    “This market is strategically located to serve as a flood gate for international traders from our neighbouring countries where local and international traders can meet to do business seamlessly without hindrance thereby bringing a lot of foreign exchange into our economy and at the same time attracting more revenue to the council thus boosting our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

    “I am happier because the completion of this market ultimately means more Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) will spring up and this implies that more of idle hands will be gainfully engaged in lawful business which will promote the overall well-being of our community and reduce crime rate.”

    Apatira reiterated his administration’s commitment to positioning Itire-lkate LCDA as a booming economic nucleus, aligning with the Greater Lagos Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwoolu.

    “From here, we shall be moving straight to Itire community where we shall be commissioning the newly constructed Customary Court, the Library and ICT Centers to the benefit of the good people of Itire-lkate. I beseech the youth especially, to take possession of the facilities as gifts brought with our little resources to create a greater future for themselves in this highly sophisticated digital age by protecting and preserving it, as users and watcher, so as not to put our collective effort to waste.     Oniru, council chief inaugurate roads

    The Chairman of Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Princess Rasheedat Abiodun Adu, has inaugurated three roads.

    This makes total roads constructed to six in recent time.

    Princess Adu said Samuel Adedoyin, Erelu Rasheedat Abiodun Adu, and Erelu Aisha Oniru roads were recently constructed to aid vehicular movement in the axis and also create an access routes within the community.

    The council chairman said she would continue to render services to the people by creating an enabling environment to ease things for the residents.

    She said she had embarked on numerous projects, ranging from infrastructure, education and empowerment, among others since elected into office.

    According to her, the constructed roads will reduce environmental pollution, the decline in man-hour lost to traffic gridlocks, reduction of stress and adding values to the property in the areas.

    “We have renovated many roads while some are under construction to help residents have easy and convenient passage. Some of the roads we have constructed include Olosa Street, Balarabe Musa, Jubril Martins, Abila Oniru and Muri-Okunola among others,” she said

    According to her, the projects were part of campaign promises.

    “These roads were terrible and as a government, we usually go around to inspect roads because we believe that Victoria-Island is an elitist environment and we decided to embark on quality projects that will be beneficial to everybody in the community,” she said.

    She applauded the executive for deeming it fit to name a road in her honour.

    “The road, Erelu Rasheedat Abiodun Adu, was named after my humble self.  This street has no name, it was a vacant street with no existing name and the executive members deemed it fit to honour me with it as a reward for my contribution to the council,” she stated.

    She vouched for the quality of jobs done during the construction.

    “The Abila Oniru was constructed within my first 100 days in office during my first term and till now, the road looks like a newly constructed one. So for other roads we have constructed,” she said.

    Princess Adu enjoined community leaders to take ownership of those roads by ensuring that people don’t engage in things that would damage them.

    The council boss assured that she would embark on empowerment and construction of another three roads, before the end of the year.

    “We going to do more empowerment, give support grants to traders within the community. We will support 250 market women with trade grants. Another palliative is coming up towards Christmas period so that everybody will have something to celebrate with,” she said.

    Oniru of Iruland, Oba AbdulWasiu Lawal while opening Samuel Adedoyin Road, hailed Princess Adu for constructing the “beautiful” road.

    Oba Lawal congratulated the residents and road users.

    According to the monarch, inaugurating three roads is great feat, saying that Princess Adu has done well.

    A lawmaker, representing Eti-Osa Constituency, who doubles as the Majority Leader of the Lagos House of Assembly, Naheem Adams, said Princess Adu has made the party proud.

    “I’m proud of you. I can boastfully tell my colleagues in the assembly to go and look at the roads constructed in his constituency. The standard and quality of the roads are worth mentioning. It shows you know the value of the electorate and appreciate them,” he said.

    The Balogun of Iruland and former Chairman of the council, Chief Muideen Abayomi Daramola, also hailed his successor for taking the council administration to another level.

    Chief Daramola said Princess Adu has done well in improving the infrastructure in the council.

    He urged her not to rest on her oars.

    The Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Rasulu Idowu, has disbursed N5m bursary to about 200 indigenes and students in the council.

    The chairman said the gesture was to demonstrate the council’s commitment to investing in education.

    According to him, education is the cornerstone of any society’s progress, adding that it is the key that unlocks doors and empowers individuals to reach their full potential.

    Recognising this, he said the council has taken upon itself the responsibility to support and uplift indigenes and resident students through the provision of bursary awards.

    “It is through such initiatives that we cultivate a culture of excellence in education, not only inspiring and motivating our students but also transforming their lives and the destiny of our Local Government,” he said.

    The council boss said the committee screened 210 students out of 243 applicants, with 193 qualifying for bursary awards.

    Idowu said the council remained dedicated to uplifting and inspiring the next generation of leaders, fostering a vision where every child’s needs are realised and the community strives for knowledge and wisdom.

    He urged the awardees to continue striving for excellence, emphasising the transformative power of education.

    Idowu called for continued support for education and appealed to parents, guardians, and awardees themselves to discourage drug abuse and harmful activities.

Remember that education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world, and we have full confidence in your ability to make a lasting difference.

    “To the students who have worked tirelessly to achieve their academic accomplishments. Let us continue to join hands in supporting education, ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education,” Idowu concluded.

    Together, let us work towards a future where every child’s dreams are realized, and our community thrives on the foundation of knowledge and wisdom. Through these bursary awards, we are sowing the seeds of a brighter tomorrow.”

    Idowu expressed confidence in the ability of the awardees to make a lasting difference, leaving a positive impact on society noting that the event served not only as a recognition of academic excellence but also as a call to sow the seeds of a brighter tomorrow through education.

    The Speaker elect, 34th LASUS, Students Paliamentary Council (SPC) Halima Hassan lauded the chairman on his achievements in education sector to “enhance the brighter future for the students who are the ambassadors of the local government”.

    Lagos Island community sensitises youths on drug abuse, vices

    The Olowogbowo Community Association on  Lagos Island has urged youths to be tolerant, eschew social vice and hard drugs.

    The  community staged a walk at the weekend to sensitise people on the need  for peace, harmony and a violence-free community.

    The residents who gathered in their numbers  kick-started the walk at Olowogbowo underbridge through Broad Street,  Marina, CMS, General Hospital Road, to State House,  Onikan inward TBS, to Tinubu Square,among other areas before terminating at  Olowogbowo underbridge where  the residents were entertained.

    Secretary of the association, Alhaji Kolapo Durojaiye said the walk was aimed at sensitising residents on the need to stop thuggery and violence in areas like Idumota, Kosoko, Apongbon, and Davies, among others.

    “We engaged in the walk to make peace reign in areas under our community.  Throughout the walk,  security personnel were  on standby, there was no violence and no  casualty was recorded. Smoking and drinking alcohol were not allowed.

    “The walk went well and met our aspirations and projections. The different inscriptions on the  displayed placards  show that we support  government’s fight  against drug abuse, and we  say no to violence,” he said.

    Chairman, Alao Okanlawon Oke-Olowogbo  thanked security personnel for maintaining law and order throughout. He also hailed the residents for their impressive turn out.

    “It provided opportunity to keep fit,  create communal love and understanding  and see   ourselves as one indivisible entity,” he added.
