Anambra pulls down Peter Obi’s bill boards over alleged debt

Some of the billboards of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Anambra have been pulled down.

The action was carried out over the alleged inability of Obi to pay the State Government.

The bill boards mounted in strategic positions in some areas were removed by the Anambra Signage and Advertising Agency (ANSAA) at the weekend.

But LP accused Governor Charles Soludo of ordering removal of the bill boards for ulterior motives. .

One of the chieftains of the party, who does not want to be quoted, told The Nation that Obi and Umeh’s large billboard at the Unizik temporary Site Flyover were pulled down on Saturday by ANSAA.

He said: “The billboard at UNIZIK Temporary Site Junction was today( Saturday ) removed on the orders of Soludo.

“The advert which was placed by an APCON registered Advertising Agency was fully paid for.

“Soludo said that he does not want Labour Party advert on such a strategic place and ordered the Anambra Signage Agency to refund the money it received for the advert.

“He also ordered the removal of the Labour Party advert at the Afor Nnobi Gantry. This advert has been there since October, 2022 and was paid for five months.”

Managing Director ANSAA Tony Ujubuonu, confirmed operatives of the agency removed the bill boards.

He said one of the LP billboards was removed on Saturday but not on the orders of Soludo.

Ujubuonu said: “Whatever that was removed was as a result of a challenge we had with the agent that erected the board.

” First and foremost is that the bridge you are talking about was having a Labour Party billboard. If you recall in August, we sent out a message to all political parties to pay up their campaign fees.

“There was a lot of hullabaloo about it. None of them has paid their own. So most of the parties that have not paid theirs that have adverts on government assets were removed. It has nothing to do with the governor.

“Governor didn’t give any order. If they said they paid, the campaign fees, let them give me any evidence, I should know, I’m the the ANSAA MD.

“They didn’t pay the campaign fees and we spoke to their media heads several times; we informed them about the enforcement, and they haven’t paid it so we decided to take down the advert.

” It has nothing to do with the Governor. Anybody that tells you anything about the Governor and the billboard is telling you lies.”

He maintained that when the billboard was removed, government refunded the advertising agency that mounted the advert its money.

“The money was refunded to the agency who owned the board not to the client. We don’t deal directly with the Labour Party, we deal with the advertising agency that mounted the board,” the ANSAA MD stressed.

  • Gunmen kill five in attacks on Imo PVC centre, Reps candidate

Gunmen kill five in attacks on Imo PVC centre, Reps candidate

Five people were again killed in Imo State on Saturday, including a policeman, as gunmen went on a rampage in the state.

In the attacks carried out in different parts of the state, INEC officials were said to have sustained injuries during the issuance of PVCs.

The country home of the spokesperson of the Coalition of the United Political Parties and People’s Democratic Party House of Representatives candidate, Ugochinyere Imo was also attacked.

In the attack, the hoodlums killed an uncle to Imo and three others.

It was gathered that no fewer than 30 campaign vehicles of the PDP candidate were burnt  during the attack in his country home at the Akokwa community.

Imo, who confirmed the attack to newsmen in a WhatsApp message disclosed that his uncle was killed in the attack.

He called for help as his home was under siege.

Imo wrote: “Emergency. We need help at Akokwa… We are under attack… My house is in Akokwa… They have surrounded it and opened fire. We are under attack. Help! Help!

“We need help… My uncle has been killed now…They are setting everything on fire. Please help.”

In a statement, the PDP in the state confirmed the attack on the country home of its candidate.

The statement which was issued by its spokesperson in the state, Collins Opuruozor read: “Imo PDP alerts security agencies, Nigerians, international community to sponsored killings, arson going on at the Akokwa residence of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, PDP candidate for Ideato Federal Constituency.

“The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State alerts that at the moment, there is a well-coordinated armed attack going on at the Akokwa residence of Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the candidate of our Party for Ideato North/South Federal Constituency.

“This has resulted in the killing of an undisclosed number of persons. Also, buildings are reported to have been set ablaze.

“Our efforts to get back to our candidate, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who was present at his residence when this attack began and who had personally alerted us to the attack, has proven abortive. However, a torrent of messages, a while ago, from Ikenga’s close aides bore some deeply pathetic lines like: “Everywhere is on fire! They are killing us! We are going, going!”

“Imo PDP calls on security agencies to immediately intervene and quell the attack on our candidate and our party members at his residence in Akokwa.

“Nigerians and the international community are to recall that on December 23, 2022, there was an attack on the convoy of our candidate by clearly-identified agents. It is shocking that despite our demand for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in that onslaught, nothing has been done by security till this moment.

“Today represents a dark day for us in Imo PDP and Imo State at large.”

Video footage shows dead bodies and burnt houses and campaign materials at Imo’s country home.

The spokesperson for the police in the state, Michael Abattam had yet to respond to an inquiry concerning the incident.

Reacting, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), the apex socio-political youth group in the South East geopolitical zone expressed shock and dismay over the attack .

He said: “Assassins came to assassinate the CUPP spokesperson but because of the stiff resistance by the security forces attached to him, they could not gain access to him but they ended up killing his uncle, two persons, and burnt down properties in his compound. This is the second time they were making an attempt on his life.

We condemn in strongest terms the assassination of these three persons who did nothing wrong to be sent to their early graves. When did participating in the campaign and electoral process become a crime in Nigeria?

Ugochinyere in a World Press Conference had exposed the electoral fraud perpetuated by some political parties during the Continuous Voters Card Registration exercise for the 2023 general elections where he showed proof of registering dead persons and foreigners as those that will vote in the 2023 elections.

“We call on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Baba, the DSS, and other security agencies to immediately move into action to arrest and prosecutes those assassins who came to assassinate the peoples’ voice, Barr Ikenga Ugochinyere and ended up killing three innocent persons who did nothing wrong to deserve such barbaric killing.”

    Policeman killed, INEC officials injured

In a separate attack on Saturday in the state, a staff of Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State was also killed as gunmen attacked staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission issuing Permanent Voters Cards to people.

It was also gathered that a police officer was also killed at the venue.

Reports said upon arrival, the attackers opened fire and killed the victims immediately.

The development brought to an end the PVC exercise as people scampered for safety.

While many people, including INEC staff, sustained injuries, no electoral material was reportedly lost.

A source who doesn’t want his name in print said that the attackers on arrival opened fire and insisted that the exercise must not go on in the area.

INEC Public Relations Officer, Dr. Chienyere Chijioke-Osuji confirmed the report saying, however, no INEC staff was killed.

According to her “it happened at Ahauzu Mbaise today, a policeman was gunned down. Not an INEC staff member. No Corp member was wounded, though my AEO Ops, Barr Kingsley Ohiri and the CLO of the LG dislocated their leg and arm while jumping over the fence. Please reach out to Barr Ohiri. Glory be to God for saving our lives. It’s really unfortunate we lost the Chief Security Officer to the LGA.”

The police in the state had yet to issue a statement on the incident.

  • Soludo to FG: I’ll stand surety for Nnamdi Kanu

Soludo to FG: I’ll stand surety for Nnamdi Kanu

Anambra State governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, yesterday volunteered to stand surety for the detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, if the federal government was willing to grant his release.

The IPOB leader, who had previously jumped bail before he was brought back to Nigeria from Kenya, has been in custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) since 2021 on allegation to treasonable felony.

Speaking during the kickoff of the campaigns of the All Progressives Grand Alliance ( APGA) for this year’s general elections at Alex Ekwueme Square  in Awka, Anambra State capital, Soludo appealed for Kanu’s unconditional release.

He said: “I am making a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally. If he cannot be released unconditionally, I want him bereleased to me and I will stand surety for him”

“We need Nnamdi Kanu in the roundtable conversation to discuss the insecurity in the South East. We must end insecurity in the South East and we need Nnamdi Kanu to be around.”

He promised to cater for Kanu if he was released to him, assuring that he would make him available whenever the authorities required him to do so.

Kanu was first arraigned on December 23, 2015, and was later granted bail on April 25, 2017.

He fled the country in September 2017 following an invasion of his house by the military in his Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia country home in Abia State.

He was re-arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria and has been facing trial since then.

  • Organ harvesting: Ekweremadu’s daughter denies trafficking homeless man to UK

Organ harvesting: Ekweremadu’s daughter denies trafficking homeless man to UK

Sonia, daughter of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has pleaded not guilty to the charge that she conspired with others to traffic a fellow Nigerian to London to harvest one of his kidneys.

The 25-year-old student is charged alongside her 60-year-old father, her mother Beatrice Ekweremadu, 56, and a doctor Obinna Obeta, 50.

Her plea was taken on Friday according to the London Mail.

The other accused persons had earlier denied the same charge.

The prosecution claims the accused conspired with others and another family member who is believed to be still in Nigeria, to arrange the travelling of 21 year-old Ukpo Nwamini David, with a view to exploiting him between August 1, 2021 and May 5, 2022.

The alleged conspirators arranged Ukpo’s travel from Lagos to London to remove one of his kidneys for Sonia, who has a kidney-related disease, the prosecution said.

Father and mother were arrested after the young man lodged a complaint with the police in London that he was the victim of trafficking at Staines Police Station.

Ukpo claimed he arrived in the UK on February 20 this year and was taken to Royal Free Hospital for tests, none of which he consented to.

After the tests, he returned to the house he was staying in, where he was ‘treated effectively as a slave’.

He said he escaped the address and was homeless for three days before going to the police.

The trial is scheduled to commence at the Old Bailey on January 31 before High Court judge Mr. Justice Adam Johnson.

Ike and Obeta are in custody in HMP Wandsworth and HMP Belmarsh respectively, while Beatrice and Sonia are both on bail.

The couple was remanded last June following their arraignment before the Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court for alleged conspiracy to facilitate Ukpo’s travel for organ harvesting.

The UK Metropolitan Police said in a statement that the arrest of the couple came on the heels of an investigation by its specialist crime team.

It said: “A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support. As criminal proceedings are now under way, we will not be providing further details.”

  • Inside Alaafin of Oyo’s deserted palace

Inside Alaafin of Oyo’s deserted palace

    • Monarchs lament Oba Adeyemi’s absence

Until the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi II, joined his ancestors while undergoing treatment at the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State on April 23 last year, his palace was always a beehive of activities. But all that has ceased with the palace shut as the ancient city awaits the emergence of another Alaafin. GBENGA ADERANTI looks at things that have changed in the monarch’s palace since he passed on

Before the longest reigning Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Adeyemi II, joined his ancestors in the early hours of April 23, 2022 at the age of 83, there was a daily routine in the palace that was never compromised. The monarch and other palace dwellers were woken up every morning by the melodious beat of the talking drum while praise singers were always on hand to sing his praises. It was the custom that even before he woke up in the morning, his palace would be filled with people who were there to seek one form of favour or the other.

While it is yet to clock one year since the late Alaafin departed, many of the palace routines that were taken for granted are no longer in existence. A source close to the palace told the reporter that not long after the monarch died, his belongings were moved out of the palace.

Indeed one of the widows of the late Alaafin said that all forms of activities in the palace had been suspended until a new Alaafin was appointed.

“Until a new Alaafin is appointed, nothing can happen. All activities have been suspended. The traditional rites will resume when a new Alaafin is installed,” she said.

Asked what had become of the late Alaafin’s valuable items like his books and historical documents, the source said that plans were on to build a centre where the books and documents would be kept for research purposes. Some who are involved in the project described the transition of the Alaafin as a big blow that had caused a temporary setback.

Nonetheless, Sade, a daughter of the late Alaafin, expressed optimism that the project would soon come to fruition. “Rome was not built in a day. We are working on it and it will come to pass,” she said.

While the stream of visitors to the palace has dried up, the widows of the late Alaafin remain in their various homes that he built for them. A source in the palace said: “They are in the various houses that baba built for them before he passed on. They are also engaged in their various jobs. Thankfully, the majority of them were up and doing while Baba (Alaafin) was alive.”

An easily noticeable change in the palace’s outlook is the conspicuous absence of a man popularly known as Baba Kekere, whose height was always an object of attention. In spite of his petite look, he is believed to know more about the palace than any other person. Little wonder he is regarded by many as the palace’s repository of knowledge.

Baba Kekere was said to have been in the palace even before the ascension of the father of the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. For the small-built man whose age remains yet a matter of conjecture, things may not be the same until a new Alaafin is installed.

In a chat with the reporter, Sade, the eldest daughter of the late Alaafin, said: “The palace is on lockdown under the protection of Atiba Local Government. The Alaafin’s drummers are not in the palace. They are in their various homes awaiting the installation of a new Alaafin.

“The servants are also in their various homes save Baba Keji, the head of servants known as Baba Kudefu. The Secretary, security men, and two other officials all under Atiba Local Council report to the palace at normal working hours.

“Baba Keji does not have much of a role until the new Alaafin is crowned. He is a historian, so the new Alaafin will surely need him.”

Until Oba Adeyemi joined his ancestors in April last year, he was the rallying point for all the monarchs in the state. Oyo monarchs were frequent in the palace for one meeting or the other. That, however, has changed.

One of the monarchs who spoke with the reporter said the death of the Alaafin has created a big vacuum in the state. He stated that many things have changed since Oba Adeyemi joined his ancestors.

Pleading anonymity because of what he called the current political situation in the state, the monarch said the government had been uncomfortable with him because of his political leaning.

According to him, the late Oba Adeyemi was not only a rallying point; he was also the voice of the traditional institution in the state.

He said: “If the Alaafin were alive, I would not have any reason to be afraid to express my views. They are closely watching me and monitoring my movements even when I travel, and I have been very careful.

“As it stands right now, traditional institutions have lost their voice, especially on matters affecting them. Nobody can champion our cause in the state right now. This is one of the things that have changed.

“I must be sincere, things have really changed. They are not taking the traditional institution the way they should take it.”

He recalled that when the late Oba Adeyemi was alive, he was promoting the traditional institution, but that had ceased since he passed on.

“Since he left, we have not had anybody to advocate for us. The conduct of some traditional rulers right now is appalling. They have forgotten the traditional institution and are pursuing something else.”

Although the responsibility of coordinating and directing the monarchs’ activities is that of the Oyo State Head of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Oyo monarchs were also periodically meeting in the Alaafin’s palace.

Since the demise of the late Oba Adeyemi, however, they have been meeting in their various divisions “because each of the traditional rulers have heads in their own divisions. But I know for sure the Oyomesi and Oyo baales meet regularly,” a source said.

Right now, the Bashorun is said to have taken more responsibilities as the head of the Oyomesi.

Asked what life had been in the Alaafin’s absence, Sade said it has been very tough without his father.

She said: “It is a very hard question to answer. Honestly, on an emotional level, it has been extremely tough.

“In the area of opportunities, recognition and respect, it seems that Baba is still much alive. We his children really deeply appreciate the legacy he left behind. May his soul continue to rest well with his ancestors.”

The Nation also gathered that Paula Gomez, a Portuguese and Alaafin Ex-Cultural Ambassador is still in Oyo town. She has not been given another role. On the contrary, Alaafin’s Royal Ambassador, Aare Ayandotun Ayanlakin, says he remains the ambassador of the Alaafin. Until the demise of Oba Adeyemi, he was a popular face in the palace, representing the late monarch at events.

According to him, his radical nature attracted him to the Alaafin, and since they met about 35 years ago, they had been together until death separated them. Ayanlakin was probably the closest person to Alaafin outside his nuclear family.

Speaking to The Nation, he said he missed the late Alaafin deeply, adding that he was a good man who assisted him in all areas of his life. “He was a good man that would look at you straight, tell you the truth, and let you know where he was going.”

He opined that the late Oba Adeyemi’s exit had created a lot of vacuum that would be difficult to fill. The new Alaafin, he said, must have  good education and sound knowledge of history.

Recalling his fond memories of the late Alaafin, Aare Ayanlakin described him as a father.

According to him, Oba Adeyemi did not look after him only but also after his children.

“I pray that God would give us someone like him again in Oyo,” he said.

Although there were times he had differences with the Alaafin, their disagreements, he said, were always quickly settled.

His meeting with the Alaafin, he recalled, was achieved through one of the chiefs in Oyo.

Ayanlakin said: “My grandfather was a drummer for the Alaafin. He would trek from his place every morning to drum for him.

“My father’s community, Akinmorin, was about one mile to Oyo. I was the Aremo of Akinmorin.”

Are  Ayanlakin said Alaafin’s wife, Funmilayo Lawrence, was his classmate, and this really helped him in knowing the late Alaafin the more.

“She told me everything about Alaafin. I was so radical when I was young and the Alaafin liked me. He was the one that opened my palace here.

“He was surprised that I could do something this big. He was happy. He entered my bedroom and slept. He looked at the house and commended me for doing well.”

While the palace has temporarily been shut, this has not affected the activities of the traditionalist.  “The activities of the traditionalists have not been affected, they still perform traditional rites,” another source said.

  • Nwosu’s resignation vindicates G-5, says Wike

Nwosu’s resignation vindicates G-5, says Wike

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has said that the recent resignation of former Minister of Health and member of Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Prof. Alphonsus Nwosu from the party, has vindicated the demand of the G-5 for equity, fairness and justice.

The Governor warned that if the party remained adamant and failed to zone the national chairmanship position to the South, it shoul be willing to face a grave repercussion.

Wike spoke when stakeholders of Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area paid a solidarity visit to him at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Saturday.

The Governor said that he had continued to challenge the party on the equality of everybody insisting that nobody should be treated as a second class citizen.

He said: “I have continued to challenge them. What is the problem? What are we fighting for? What I said and will continue to say is that all of us are from this country. Nobody is a second class citizen.

“We are agreed that this is how our party will be. Recently Prof. A.B.C Nwosu resigned from the party saying that his conscience will not allow him, that the constitution of the party is clear, if you take this, these other people will take that. Why now are we saying that we won’t do it again?

“What the people are saying is look, you have taken this, let these people take that and you are saying you will take all. If you take all, you will also face the repercussions.”

The Governor declared that anybody fighting the state would surely be defeated at the poll.

He maintained that God had blessed the state so much that he would not allow its adversaries to become victorious because the protective wall still remained difficult to penetrate.

Wike stressed that even if Rivers loved peace, it could not be intimidated and made to succumb to persons, who just wanted to milk it and deny it rightful place in the scheme of national politics.

He said: “You can not fight anybody that God has blessed. God has blessed Rivers State. Anybody fighting Rivers State, you are fighting yourself.

“Nobody can intimidate us. No one State in this country can intimidate Rivers State. If you want to fight us, we will fight you to the last.

“If you want to make peace with us, we will make peace with you to the last. But thinking that anybody will come and intimidate us and then we will chicken out, that is not possible.”

Wike flayed people like Senator George Thompson Sekibo for working against the interest of Rivers and wondered the benefits he could attract to his people.

The Rivers governor described Senator Sekibo as an ungrateful politician, who believed that only he should be the leading light in his local government.

Wike said he ensured that Mr. Akin Fakorede, a former head of the notorious SARS team in Rivers State, did not succeed in stalling the announcement of the 2015 senatorial election of Sekibo adding that he footed his legal fees at the tribunal.

The Rivers governor insisted that it was time the people of Ogu/Bolo local government and all Rivers people stood together against those working against the interest of the state.

Wike announced the award of contract for the construction of Eli Town landing jetty, and the Eteo-Ogu Road in Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.

The Governor also assured the payment of the remaining contractual sums in the coming week for the remodelled Junior Secondary School in Ogu, sandfilling project, and Kera-K-Dere Road.
