  • Stakeholders applaud police, urge political class to support security agencies’ effort in Sapele

Stakeholders applaud police, urge political class to support security agencies’ effort in Sapele

Critical stakeholders in Sapele under the ages of Concerned Sapele Residents, (CSR) have applauded the Police and other security agencies over their commitment to fighting crime in Sapele local government areas of Delta State.

The group also charged political leaders in the Sapele local government area to collaborate and support security agencies in the locality in tackling emerging security challenges in the famous timber town.

CRS said that the call for the support of the police and other security agencies has become necessary following an emerging global security concern, noting that Sapele as part of the global community is not insulated from criminal attacks, hence all stakeholders should support the efforts of the police in curbing crime in Sapele.

The groups stated these in a statement after a critical stakeholders meeting in Sapele on Wednesday, July 23, 2024.

They reasoned security is everyone’s business, noting that the task of policing a complex city like Sapele cannot be left in the hands of security agencies alone.

CSR commended the efforts of the Nigerian Police and the Nigerian Army who through operational efficiencies have mitigated the incidence of violent crime, particularly cultism, armed robbery and kidnapping in Sapele in the past two years.

Concerned Sapele Residents in a statement by its National Coordinator, Mazi Uguw Emenike, General Secretary, Comrade Moses Osadolo and its spokesman, Mr Oniovosa Etashime, explained that for residents to experience peace in Sapele, all stakeholders as a matter of urgency must support security agencies who daily put their lives on the lines with little or no motivation to ensure that we and our family are safe.

According to their statement: “Sapele has been one of the safest cities in Nigerians, thanks to the efforts of the Nigerian Police and the military personnel who for about two years now have kept cultists, armed robbers and kidnappers at bay in Sapele and its environs.

“We have one of the best-trained security personnel in Africa, but we must understand that our security agencies are overstretched on all fronts, and to compound their challenges, they are not well equipped, poorly motivated and founded to take on emerging security threats.

“So, we commend the modest efforts of our security agencies in Sapele and we want to encourage them to keep up their good work, however, there is room for improvement to confront emerging global security, and Sapele being part of the global community is not immune to pockets of attacks.

“To tackle the growing security threat which is not peculiar to Sapele or Delta State, all hands must be on deck, security is everyone’s business and as such it cannot be left for the government or the security agencies alone to handle.

“We are all aware that after every major election like the one of the 2023 general elections, there is always an upsurge in violent crime because some of the guns supplied by political gladiators to their supporters were not recovered which in most cases these boys whose bosses failed to settle now turn against innocent residents.

“So, we want to appeal to the political class in Sapele to put aside their political affiliations and support the efforts of the police and other security agencies to serve us better.

“Kidnappers and armed robberies don’t know whether you are an APC or PDP member when they strike. So, when there is a security challenge we as stakeholders should work for solutions rather than engage in blame game.

We should shun the temptations of playing politics with security because when it booms around, we don’t know who the victim would be. We the security agencies need now is our support and not unwarranted criticism.

“Therefore, we call on those in positions of authority in Sapele to assist security agencies with logistics, such as operational patrol vans, modern communication gadgets and other necessary tools that can enhance their operation, and not just stand aloof and criticise their operation without lending a helping hand.”

  • Sapele robberies, kidnappings: Igbuya urges security agencies to brace up

Sapele robberies, kidnappings: Igbuya urges security agencies to brace up

The Delta Representative in the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Hon Monday Igbuya has called on security agencies in Sapele and its environs to up their games over the incessant cases of kidnappings and armed robberies in the town.

Igbuya, a former Delta Speaker, in a chat with some journalists, decried the worsening cases of insecurity in Sapele and its environs in recent times, noting that hardly can a day passes without someone being kidnapped or robbed, stressing that residents in Sapele are currently living in fear.

He said in the past one-and-half year, the security situation in the Sapele has been relatively good but sadly, in the past few months, it’s like the police and other security agencies have been caught off guard and shifted from pure security duties to chasing of yahoo boys why the town is under kidnappers siege.

In the past two weeks, no fewer than five persons were kidnapped while some were lucky to have escaped.

One Mr Ola, a surveyor, his wife and his children were reported to have been kidnapped in front of their house at NDDC road over the weekend.. The kidnappers later released their children the same day and the couple after collecting undisclosed sums of money as ransom.

There are reports Sapele has been under kidnappers and armed robbery siege. People were reported to have been kidnapped and robbed at will in their homes, particularly at Shell Road, NDDC Road, Amukpe, Ghana-Ogberekoko and one-man village.

According to Igbuya: “The worsening cases of insecurity in Sapele and its environs is becoming very worrisome and it’s getting out of hand and if urgent steps are not taken to arrest the development, it will affect the social economic development of the town.

“So, I am calling on the Nigerian Police and other sister security agencies to up their games and stop this dangerous drift, because no one or nowhere is safe as it is today in Sapele, people are being kidnapped at will in their homes, along the streets and even public places unchallenged.

“You can imagine, a young man who came for the preparation of his father-in-law’s burial was kidnapped in front of the inlaw’s house in the Ghana-Ogberekoko area, and in the past four days, nothing has been heard about his whereabouts.

“Yesterday I also heard that they almost kidnapped someone in front of Foodland in Okpe road in broad daylight, but he was lucky to have escaped, it’s now everyday thing in Sapele and its environs.

“The situation is getting out of hand, the security agencies should rather focus their attention on more critical issues than chasing Yahoo boys in town, they should up their games and change the dynamics.

“In past one, or two years, the town has been relatively peaceful and there was a huge improvement in terms of security, but the situation is becoming very alarming now. You know I was a victim of kidnapping in 2009 and the experience is horrifying.

“No community can experience meaningful development without a peaceful environment. So, I also appealed to our youths to shun crime and take up lawful means of livelihood, crime doesn’t pay.

“I also called on residents of Sapele to be more vigilant, this is not about herdsmen, this is the case of our people being involved in the kidnapping scheme, so we have to be very careful now.”

  • MOSOP chieftain welcomes new HYPREP coordinator

MOSOP chieftain welcomes new HYPREP coordinator

A chieftain of the Movement for the Survival Of Ogoni People (MOSOP) Fegalo Nsuke on Sunday hailed President Bola Tinubu for his choice of Dr Olufemi Adekanmbi as new coordinator of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), saying the appointment marked a turning point for the Ogoni clean-up project.

The appointment of Adekambi, a former Commissioner for Special Duties, Culture and Tourism in Ondo State and member of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), was announced by presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, on Saturday.

Nsuke who is recognised in a section of MOSOP as President, noted that even though the new coordinator was not from Ogoni, what mattered  most under the present circumstance was competence and capacity to undertake the clean-up of Ogoni.

He lamented that Ogoni sons have been in the position in the past but could not deliver satisfactorily, adding “what matters to us is someone who can deliver. We have had Ogonis there for eight years and we’ve been disappointed. So if Adekanmbi does it right, we are fine with that.”

He also set an agenda for the new HYPREP coordinator. He said: “We want him to prioritize water provision and implement the integrated water project which was approved by the Governing Council of HYPREP in 2017.

“We will also want him to focus more on proper clean-up of both surface and underground pollution. That’s actually his mandate.”

Prof Iniodu George, an environmentalist and professor of environmental and public health parasitology in the department of environmental biology at the University of Cross River State, has commended Tinubu for the choice of Adekanmbi.

He said in an interview on Sunday: “The President anticipates the exercise of competence, dedication, and professionalism in fulfilling the mission of the HYPREP to restore and revitalize communities impacted by hydrocarbon pollution, with a primary focus on Ogoniland in Nigeria.

“We want him to prioritize water provision and implement the integrated water project which was approved by the Governing Council of HYPREP in 2017.

“I expect the new coordinator to spring into action to review the state of affairs in Ogoni clean-up effort and engage best available technology to enhance timely and permanent results in the remediation of the impacted ecosystems, as well chart a course for the provision of sustainable infrastructure and socioeconomic amenities, especially access to clean water, sanitation and healthcare.

“The appointment of a new project coordinator for HYPREP coming on the heels of the 2024 Niger Delta Summit, where the chronic devastation of the region’s environment was again vehemently decried by participants and natives, signifies a pragmatic intention by Mr. President to address the issues of oil pollution in the Niger Delta.”

ADUN Lagos lines up activities for Awka Day celebrations

The Awka Development Union, Nigeria (ADUN), Lagos State chapter has announced series of events to celebrate its 12th biannual Awka Day.

The celebrations, organized by the umbrella body of Awka indigenes in Lagos, will feature a weeklong lineup of activities starting on Sunday, November 23.

The festivities will culminate with a grand parade featuring all the villages, followed by an awards ceremony recognizing outstanding members of the community.

“The event is very important to us because it brings together seven Igbo groups sharing a common blood lineage divided into two sections. • Delta APC chieftain urges Tinubu, NSA to disregard calls to sack Otuaro

Delta APC chieftain urges Tinubu, NSA to disregard calls to sack Otuaro

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State, High Chief Michael Johnny, Agadiwei of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to disregard those he described as mischief-makers calling for the sack of Dennis Otuaro, Administrator of Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).

Johnny, in a statement in Warri, said those calling for the sack of Otuaro were only afraid that it will not be business as usual for them in the Amnesty office, as Otuaro has vowed to stop any form of corrupt tendencies in the Amnesty office.

The Gbaramatu chief also condemned what he believed were orchestrated blackmail and media attacks on Ijaw National leader, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo.

He warned against the attempts by certain individuals and mischief-makers to instigate other Ijaw kingdoms in Delta State against Gbaramatu Kingdom, noting that the misleading insinuation or allegation that Gbaramatu Kingdom is shortchanging other Ijaw kingdoms in Delta State for political appointments and federal benefits was not true and should be disregarded.

“ For the records, Gbaramatu Kingdom has only produced the immediate past Deputy Governor, Dr. Kingsley Otuaro, which was a joint ticket with former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the incumbent Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor. It should be made clear that RT. Hon. Julius Pondi, representing Burutu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abuja, is an Ijaw from Ogulagha Kingdom in Burutu Local Government Area,” he began.

He added: “ The immediate past Senator for Delta Soutg Senatorial District, Senator James Manager, is an Ijaw man from Akugbene-mein Kingdom in Bomadi Local Government Area, who spent five terms in the Senate. Also, another Ijaw man, Mr. Godsday Orubebe from Burutu Local Government Area, was Minister of Niger Delta Affairs under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“ I still recall that when Bosin Ebikeme from Gbaramatu Kingdom was to be appointed a Minister by former President Goodluck Jonathan, it was Tompolo who objected it and insisted that Orubebe should be appointed. Till date, Gbaramatu Kingdom has not produced a Minister, Senator nor member of House of Representatives. Why the unnecessary envying and hatred against Gbaramatu Kingdom.”

The Ijaw leader of APC in Delta State said nobody should envy or castigate Gbaramatu Kingdom, as the sacrifices by Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Niger Delta struggle can not be quantified.

“ Gbaramatu Kingdom lost over 20 indigenes that were killed and buried in the struggle. Property worth Billions were destroyed in Gbaramatu Kingdom by the Federal Government. In 2009, when Federal Government attacked Gbaramatu Kingdom, only the indigenes of Gbaramatu suffered the lost. My 7-Bedroom Duplex was burnt down by the Federal Government in the Niger Delta struggle. Nobody gave me money for my house that was destroyed. I personally built it back.

“ Papa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark has contributed immensely to the unity, progress and development of Ijaw Nation and by extension the Niger Delta region. Therefore, it is totally unacceptable for any Ijaw son going to the media to attack Papa Clark. Ijaw Nation respects Papa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, and it will continue to be so. Any insult whatsoever on Papa Clark is an insult to the entire Ijaw Nation and Niger Delta. Such will not be tolerated from anybody especially from fellow Ijaws,” he submitted.

He backed Tompolo on the pipeline surveillance contract awarded to Tantita Security Services Limited, warning that nobody should fight Tompolo for his private contract.

“ Tantita Security Services Limited TSSL, is a private company, and Federal Government awarded the pipeline surveillance contract to Tompolo’s company on merit after following due process. It was not an Ijaw contract, the Federal government or NNPCL did not award the pipeline surveillance contract to Ijaw Nation, but to a private security company. So, why would fellow Ijaws fight Tompolo for his private contract”

“ Interestingly, since Tantita Security Services Limited was awarded the contract, the country’s revenue from oil production has increased, and oil theft and illegal bunkering also reduced drastically. I commend Tompolo for being generous in handling the pipeline surveillance contract, because he subleted to other companies and carried more people along, including other ethic tribes,” he argued.

He added: “ Tompolo should be allowed to do his job and execute the contract, which he is doing very well even beyond expectations. The Federal Government and NNPCL have absolute confidence in Tompolo and Tantita Security Services Limited, and of course the entire country are seeing the results in the fight against oil theft being championed by Tompolo.”

He noted that Ijaw Nation is one and Gbaramatu Kingdom is not in competition with any other Ijaw kingdoms. According to him: “ More so, Gbaramatu Kingdom will never take what belongs to other Ijaw kingdoms. Let us continue to leave in peace and collectively fight for the progress and development of Ijaw Nation.”

He argued Otuaro since assumption of office has shown capacity and taken the right steps required to move the Amnesty programme forward.

The Ijaw chief warned that should there be any break down of law and order, or attacks on oil facilities, the federal government should go after the mischief-makers who are fighting Tompolo and Otuaro.

  • Fubara applauded for allowing former Rivers LG officials complete tenure

Fubara applauded for allowing former Rivers LG officials complete tenure

The National Vanguard for Rule of Law (NVRL) has commended Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State for upholding the democratic tenets and allowing elected Local Government officials to complete their three-year tenure.

The group said in an era where some goyvernors undermine the democratic process by truncating the mandate of duly elected officials, Fubara’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic governance is a refreshing respite.

Recall that 23 local government chairmen, vice and councillors recently vacated their offices after the expiration of their tenure.

In a statement by Comrade Johnson Babatunde, the NVRL said by allowing the elected LG officials to complete their tenure, Governor Fubara has demonstrated an uncommon respect for the will of the people, who overwhelmingly elected these officials to serve them.

Babatunde said this gesture was a clear indication that the Governor is a true democrat, a defender of the people’s rights, and a leader who prioritises the welfare and interests of his people above personal or political considerations.

The group hailed Governor Fubara as a champion of democracy, a shining star in the firmament of Nigerian politics, and a role model for other leaders to emulate.

“The National Vanguard for Rule of Law commends the Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara for allowing the 23 democratically elected local government chairmen and councilors in Rivers State to complete their 3 years tenure in office,” the statement said.

“Unlike his counterpart in Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, who without provocation dismantled the democratically elected local government chairmen and councilors he inherited from his predecessor, despite a court order restraining him from doing so, Governor Fubara allowed and supported the local government chairmen and councilors to complete their tenure, which came to en end on June 17th, 2024.

“Despite the provocation from the local government chairmen because of their allegiance to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, Governor Fubara once again displayed his democratic credentials by not truncating the tenure of the chairmen and their councilors.

“We call on other Governors in the country today and in the future to emulate Governor Fubara in upholding democracy and the rule of law and also respecting the third tier of government.

“The immediate past local government chairmen in Rivers State also need to appreciate Governor Fubara for his magnanimity democratic credentials and for upholding the rule of law. “

  • Set up panel to probe outgoing council chairmen, Fubara told

Set up panel to probe outgoing council chairmen, Fubara told

Rivers Development Foundation (RiDeF) has called on Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara to probe the outgoing Local Government Chairmen..

The group, in a statement by its President Dr. Rejoice Okoli, pointed out that there were allegations of corruption and gross misconduct against some of the outgoing council bosses.

RiDeF also highlighted alleged mismanagement of internally generated revenues (IGR) by many of the local government chairmen who “claim to be loyal to powers in Abuja and not the people of Rivers State.”

The group urged Governor Fubara to promptly establish a panel to probe the outgoing Local Government Chairmen.

It said: “The Rivers Development Foundation (RiDeF) wishes to call the attention of His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara to the serious allegations of corruption, misappropriation, and gross misconduct against some of the outgoing Local Government Chairmen in the state,” the statement said.

“The allegations of abuse of office and embezzlement are indeed weighty and of utmost concern to the people of Rivers. There is credible information that the outgoing LG Chairmen have been looting the treasury and stealing government properties in the last few months. Also, the internally generated revenues (IGR) have also been squandered by many of them who claim to be loyal to powers in Abuja and not the people of Rivers State.

“These allegations should be looked into, and His Excellency should set up a panel to probe the outgoing council bosses in order to get justice for the people of Rivers.

“Most of the outgoing Local Government Chairmen haven’t inaugurated a single project since assuming office despite the huge allocations they receive from the state treasury and internally generated revenues. They pocketed the resources meant for the development of their councils and shared the leftovers among their cronies and loyalists of their Abuja godfather.

“The rate of nepotism, cronyism, and favoritism in the local governments under the outgoing council bosses is also alarming. They skewed all the strategic appointments to favor their cronies and allies of their political godfather in Abuja, disregarding the principles of inclusion, fairness, and justice.

“There are also allegations of ghost workers, budget-padding, racketeering, and insubordination to the government and people of Rivers State amongst others against the outgoing Local Government Chairmen.

Read Also: Army Chief to soldiers: we must win all land battles

“Worse still, some of the outgoing council bosses violated their oath of office and betrayed the trust of the people by engaging in dangerous plots to destabilize the state for their selfish gains. Their actions not only undermined the democratic process but also threatened the safety and security of citizens.

“Therefore, we urge the Governor to immediately constitute a panel to probe the outgoing Local Government Chairmen. The probe would not only serve as a deterrent to future council bosses but also prove to Rivers people that His Excellency has zero tolerance for corruption and prioritizes their well-being and safety.

“Finally, we commend Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his prudent management of resources and provision of good governance in the state. His performance so far is beyond expectations and worthy of emulation.”

  • Ex-Niger Delta agitator: Fight against oil theft total, without Compromise

Ex-Niger Delta agitator: Fight against oil theft total, without Compromise

Pastor Reuben Wilson was among the key players in the South South that led campaigns for the election of President Bola Tinubu. As a former Niger Delta freedom fighter who accepted the presidential amnesty offer, he is working with Tompolo’s Tantita to end crude oil theft in the region and is a die-hard supporter of the APC in Bayelsa State. In this interview, he spoke on the economy, the President’s first year in office as well as the recent tribunal judgement on the Bayelsa election. Excerpts:

You’re one of those who fought for President Bola Tinubu to come to power. He has done one year already. What do you think about his performance so far?

Yes. Mr. President has tried his best. As a President, he has done well in his one year in office, especially the road map. He has tried.

You will agree with me that even the East-West Road is really, really progressing very well. They are working day and night. I am always on the road and I am seeing what they are doing. I have seen what is going on from the Eleme axis, up to the refinery. They are working, even from Ahoada to Yenagoa axis, they are working. Even in the FCT, some serious works are really going on. So, I think I give him kudos for the journey so far. The impact so far has been great and people can feel it.

But there is so much hunger in the land. People are complaining and crying?

You are right. I used to tell my people, a lot of people that suffered during the campaign and election that worked for Mr. President are there fighting on how to get appointment. But I used to tell them, getting an appointment is not the result, getting appointment is not the issue for now; if you are being appointed, all those that worked for Mr. President under you will be hoping to get something from you in return. But if you don’t have the resources to take care of those people, then why go there? Are you going there to have an appointment for your selfish reason or for the masses?

The most important thing right now that people are talking about is how Mr. President can stabilise things, especially the stomach infrastructure level. The thing is really, really hard that people cannot afford food to eat again.

I am saying this because I witnessed it live. I went to market two weeks ago to buy things myself because my wife always complain that things are too expensive; I said let me go and witness things myself and I went to market with N300,000. I could not get much from the market. My PA said ‘Oga the money has gone’. I said yes o, we have not got anything, he said yes the money has gone. So people are dying, people are suffering. So there is a need, serious need for Mr. President to look into this aspect because the cost of things in Nigeria has now increased in ten places.

I am a contractor to some oil companies. When I signed contract with one of the oil companies in 2012, we were buying fuel for N40,000 a drum for 200 litres. Today, I am buying the same quantity of fuel for N345,000 for our engine boats. The money added is about N300,000. So what are we talking? Things are times ten of what they were before. So Mr. President should look into this thing. My wife is a caterer. Look at cartons of fish, things that she was buying with small money, now it’s times ten. In fact, she complained that she could not carry out the services to people again because the contract value remains the same while the price of things is times ten. So how are you going to cope?

Mr. President should look into this; he should see how he can stabilise the economy of this country so that the common people, the masses will not regret voting him into power. But for now, people are dying. Mr. President will not understand, the people in Abuja; the senators will not understand. The House of Reps members will not understand, those in the villa will not understand what people are going through. You can only understand what is going on when you go to the market. Go to the market yourself, if you enter yourself then you know that kaki no be leather.

For those who worked for the President during the election, but who are still clamouring for appointments, I need to let them know that true leader must fight for his people and not for himself. If you don’t fight for your people, then you are not a leader. So the most important thing here is how Mr. President can do something about the cost of things. If we continue this way, believe me, there are people that will sleep and they will not wake up because of stomach infrastructure. Because of hunger, they will sleep and won’t be able to stand up the next morning.

A friend of mine was telling me something yesterday and I felt really sad, I nearly shed tears. According to that my friend, he said he went out but when he returned home around 9 o’clock, someone was knocking at his door. When he opened the door, the person was saying ‘please I need garri if you have, even if it’s two cups, let me manage with my family; that he was not having anything for his family to eat.  But he entered his house and asked his wife that please, ‘do we have garri here’, the wife said yes, but very little. He said please bring it out. He now gave to the man. He managed to also give the guy N5,000.

If I open my phone, you will see messages of people; ‘please can you help me with N2,000 let me buy garri, people are asking for N1,000, people are begging. That is what Nigerians are going through.

Mr. President is a good man, we believe in him and we know he can do it. Like me, Reuben C. Wilson, I believe in him. That was why I took up his cross on my head. The whole South South states, there is no state that I did not touch with my people, no state that I did not spend millions for his campaign and election. In fact, during flood, we were soaked inside the flood waters from Ahoada to Yenagoa. My people were inside water because of him. But today, I am not talking about appointment. The major thing that we want Mr. President to handle is the economy; the cost of things. We really need changes in that aspect so that people can feel his impact, if not, I am telling you, we don’t know where we are going and I know Mr. President is capable of fixing things so that Nigerians can smile again.

Let’s talk about the activities of Tantita. You are working in partnership with Tantita and Tompolo to secure the creeks and stop oil bunkering. Where are we now? Crude oil theft we understand is still on the high?

Tantita as a security company has done credibly well. In fact, Tantita has brought back the Niger Delta face to shape now. If you want to talk about oil theft, the thing was really bad. But as I am talking to you we have a good result and kudos to Tantita and Tantita is the only company that has that strength, the courage and the ability for the task. You know the chairman of the company is one person that doesn’t talk. People that go to media everyday, it is very hard for such people to succeed when they are doing things. But this is a man that you hardly hear his voice in the media. He doesn’t talk but he is doing his work quietly and efficiently.

Tantita is working. Like in Bayelsa State, Joshua Maciver who is the coordinator has done credibly well under Tantita. We have seen results. Kojo in the Nembe axis has done credibly well, we have seen results. In Delta, same thing, we have seen results, they are working. All the sections are working and there are tangible results. In Omoku, they are working, in Imo State, my friend, Igwe is working well. In Rivers State, all the clusters too are working. I was sent down to Rivers State to also join hands with those that who are working; I mean Tantita. Those coordinators in the clusters, I was sent to join them, and since I came too, work is going on smoothly.

    What is your worst experience?

My worst experience was early last month when my people went to a place called Ker to destroy the illegal refinery there. Ker is in Akuku Toru. So, when my guys got there to destroy the illegal refineries, gunmen appeared and were firing shots at the military for almost two hours. There is an Army gun boat attached to me. I also have Civil Defense people. But thank God no one was injured because God knows that we were on a right movement, doing what will benefit Nigeria. Nobody got injured but the shooting was too much. I have the video clips, because my media people were capturing the event, when the thing was o. That was a bad one. If not for God we would have lost over 20 persons; but God in his mercy protected our people and no one was injured. I happen to be the coordinator of special team in Rivers State. I don’t have boundaries. I go across the states.

I also have an advice for the bunkerers; a serious advise. You see one thing, we are all law abiding citizens of this country and if Mr. President says let’s stop this thing, why can’t we have a break? If you have boys, it’s right for you to approach Tantita office and say ‘see I was a bunkerer, but right now since Mr. President has given order that we should stop, I want to stop; but please also engage me and my boys, we also want to work.’ The office will look into it. We are not happy destroying things, we are not happy burning boats, we are not happy destroying what they spent millions to build. This illegal refinery, some spent 10, 15, 20, 30, 50 million. We are not happy destroying those things, but this is an order from Mr. President; we need to carry out the directive and our people should understand and give peace a chance.

I was in the creeks when the former President, the late President, Yar’Adua said he wanted us to accept amnesty and we listened, we obeyed. We came out. Today we are alive, we did not die, we have freedom. The most important thing in life that a man will seek to have is freedom. Freedom is the highest thing in life. So, I am pleading with my people to understand and give peace a chance and leave the business of illegal bunkering. When they said we should accept amnesty, all of us were thinking that of how we were going to survive. But today, all of us are surviving. Even if no money, we are surviving. So they should give peace a chance. I am pleading with them, I am just begging for all the bunkerers in the Niger Delta region to give peace a chance. I am begging.

Tompolo is not a bad man. People should listen and stop doing these things. The worst thing is, you will destroy the illegal refinery today and the next day, they will go and buy plates again to weld and start another camp. Haba!  Some of the illegal bunkerers have left the business and have joined Tantita to work and are being paid salaries.  Even if they will not get what they were getting before, at least they have freedom. So there is a need for our people to understand. Tantita is ready to engage people, they are ready to engage the community leadership, women leaders, youth leaders, chiefs, like that.

A new administrator is now in place at the Presidential Amnesty Office. You played a major role in the removal of the man that was there. What do you think of the current administrator?

I will stand here to tell you today that Dennis Otuaro is doing very well. The man that was there, you will not believe that that man, after getting that appointment he never called the people that fought to bring the amnesty office. Thank God, Mr. President listened to the cry of those that suffered for him and Otuaro was appointed.

Otuaro is relating very well with the leaders. Most times he calls me as well as other leaders and we will cross fertilise ideas.  Otuaro is doing very well because he was part of the struggle. He knows everything about the Niger Delta struggle. He was part of the struggle, from beginning to the end. I know he is going to set a new positive record.

So, are you saying that the dignity, the integrity, the original intent of the amnesty office have been restored?

I am telling you, it’s 100 per cent. I have said it here, that he was also part of the jungle, he was in the struggle, not someone that stayed abroad. He was down in the creeks; so I am telling you, the amnesty programme is back to the shape. Just give him few months and you will see what will happen.

Can you set an agenda for him?

What I will want him to look into are those people that have not been trained. In each camp, we have followers. A lot of them have been trained and some have not been trained. I want him to look into that aspect very well.

And again, we have a lot of lapses like in second phase and third phase; they are complaining that they have made some changes. I will really want him too to look into the educational sector of the programme because our people need to go to school. He should really look at that aspect, how they can go to school.

Those that want to go for other training programmes, he should make sure they go to those trainings. Those are the main factors. I will also use this medium to plead that he should relate with the authorities; how we can bring out the pockets of bad elements that are still in the creeks. I think he has the power to discuss with the authorities on how we can still bring out these people, talk to them, how they can allow peace on the waterways. Those are the major things.

Our mothers, our wives that do trading and ply the waterways are really going through a lot because of all these pockets of criminals, the sea pirates. Tantita has helped a lot in that area though. Because of Tantita, sea piracy is reducing because always we are patrolling with the military men. But I want him to look at this aspect seriously too.

He should also think about the welfare of the leaders. Yes we have him and we know he will do it. He can talk to the authorities, talk to Mr. President that the leaders under this programme.

We have been getting this same N65,000. N65,000 you know, as a commander, as a leader of the group, it is not okay again, under this economy.

It was a sad news, it was very sad, very sad but I want to tell you one thing today; I don’t talk much. I am a party man, I was in PDP before I left the party for APC. When I joined APC, I was coordinator Southern Ijaw for David Lyon’s election in 2019 and in Sylva’s election, I was still coordinator, Southern Ijaw for the election, which we did well and we won that election.

During the Bayelsa State last governorship election, APC won that election, but God knows how it happened and they announced Diri’s name as governor-elect of Bayelsa State.

I am not condemning someone’s government but I believe that Sylva would have done more than Diri. APC government would have done better than what PDP is doing, Yes. Bayelsa State is a small state, I mean the state capital, it’s very small. Go and see, compare it with other states that they are doing roads everywhere. Go and see Bayelsa State.

During the campaign and election period, they tried as if they wanted to fix some roads. After everything, the roads are there as they were. Nothing is happening. Even my street, my own street too nothing is happening, Ken-Kaiama Street nothing is happening. But they did as if they wanted to do the road. They said they have awarded contract for the road, but after election everything died down.

The N20,000 they were paying to people at the unit level, ward level, where is the money? I told them, I said this money is for election; after election, you won’t see it again. Today, it has happened. After election, no money, they are not paying anything to anybody. Some of my people will call for assistance and I will say ‘ah ah what about the N20, N20 thousand they were paying you nah? They said ‘oga nothing after election.’

So that election, we won it and by the grace of God, we will still get our mandate back at the Appeal Court. We will get it. What the tribunal did, I don’t want to say anything about that but they know what they did. But I have that belief that we will get it right. Sylva will be the governor and Maciver will be the deputy governor of Bayelsa State because we won that election and we must take it back by the grace of God. I know that.

Douye Diri is not a bad man. I don’t have any issues with him but I am saying the right thing. I am a party man and we won that election. So the court should know what to do. They are aware that we won it; that election was won by APC, they should give us our mandate.

I am not happy going to Yenagoa, I am not happy because I don’t see any reason to go there because nothing is going on.The PDP members are the ones even crying, that they are hungry, they want to die, no food. The PDP people are crying more than even the APC people. Diri is not a bad man but the problem is, what is he really doing? We have not seen his impact but he is a good man, we have not seen his impact. It’s better for those that understand the business to take over. Sylva understands governance. Sylva is someone that plays with everybody. A good man must go to the street to play with the street boys. If you don’t go out to play with street boys, you won’t know what is going on.

But the former President, Goodluck Jonathan after that election said he would have relocated his mother from Bayelsa State to Abuja if Sylva had won.

Yes, he said it and I condemned it then, I said it was wrong for a statesman to make such statement. We have so much respect for him. The world has so much respect for Goodluck Jonathan but when that statement came out, a lot of people were wondering that is it really from the former president? He is very educated, a very sound good man that was not supposed to come out with such thing but he did, and I asked a question then; while he was president, a lot of things happened under his watch. Did anybody remove their relatives from Abuja? As a President, Abuja was attacked, was he responsible for that attack? The answer is no. Who ran away from Abuja? Nobody. People were still there. Under his watch, a lot of things happened. People can come out and say it; destruction, bombing here and there,  he was not the one that did those things, even though he was the president. I don’t know what Sylva did that the former president could not forgive Sylva. He fought Sylva till he removed him as a governor. He  brought in Seriake Dickson. Dickson even insulted him. Oh yes, as a governor, Dickson insulted Goodluck. But this man that he removed as a governor never did that; he  kept respecting him till date and he said he want to fight the man till the day he dies. Well, power belongs to God and it’s God that gives power not human being.

But were you shocked when you heard that judgment on Monday?

I was not because I knew that would happen, I even told my people. I said I am not expecting any good thing from this tribunal. But we we will get it, I am telling you, we will get judgement from the Supreme Court.

Do you have faith in the Court of Appeal?

Court of Appeal too I don’t really know. But everything is in the hands of God. But at the Supreme Court, we will get it right. I also know that even the Appeal Court will do the right thing. And if they don’t. the Supreme Court will; but I believe that the Appeal Court will do the right thing.
