PDP groups hold Damagun-must-go protest ahead NEC meeting

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Reform  Vanguard on Thursday led thousands of youths to the headquarters of the PDP in Abuja to demand immediate resignation of the party’s chairman,  Ambassador Iliya Damagun.

The youths, who besieged the party headquarters before its scheduled National Economic Council, (NEC) meeting, also urged the NEC to sanction the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for alleged anti-party activities.

Convener of the PDD reform vanguard, Usman Seidu, said Damagun and Wike have “undermined our collective efforts and jeopardized our very existence as a formidable opposition force.”

“We commend our former National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu for his demonstration of unwavering loyalty and love for our party by withdrawing all pending suits against the party in the Court,” he said.

“His actions have paved the way for our great party to move forward, to cleanse our ranks and restore integrity to our leadership. However, the presence of individuals like Amb. Iliya Damagun and Mr. Nyesome Wike within our midst remains a cancerous growth on the body of our party.

“Their actions, tantamount to betrayal, have undermined our collective efforts and jeopardized our very existence as a formidable opposition force. The time has come for the NEC to act decisively. Amb. Iliya Damagun must be removed from his position as Acting National Chairman, in accordance with the provisions of our party’s constitution.

“He must be replaced with a loyal member from the North Central, someone who embodies the spirit of our party and will work tirelessly for the advancement of its course.

“Furthermore, we cannot turn a blind eye to the continuous presence of Mr. Nyesome Wike within our ranks. His romance with the APC has been handsomely rewarded with his appointment as Minister of the FCT and as such, his stay is a slap in the face of every loyal member of our party.

“The continuous presence of individuals like Damagun and Wike is not just detrimental to our progress; it is a clear and present danger to the very survival of our party. If the party failt to take decisive action against those who have betrayed our trust, then it risk losing the faith and support of it’s loyal members across the country.”

The group implored members of the NEC to summon the courage and conviction necessary to take the tough decisions required to reposition the party for greatness.

  • NEF actors placing personal gains above Nigeria’s unity, survival- Arewa Forum

NEF actors placing personal gains above Nigeria’s unity, survival- Arewa Forum

Group, Arewa Progressive Forum (APFO) has disowned Northern Elders Forum (NEF) over a comment on President Bola Tinubu’s presidential approach to security in the region, saying the actors behind NEF’s outburst were more interested in personal gains than unity and survival of Nigeria.

The group while stating that the elders’ position was not a collective decision of sons and daughters of the North, noted that Tinubu has so far shown interest in addressing the security challenges in the country and North in particular by appointing credible sons of the region into sensitive security positions in addition to ongoing daily military and police operations in the North.

The Nation recalled that the Northern Elders Forum had claimed to have regretted its decision to vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 elections, with a threat that the north had learned its lesson over heightened security challenges under the Tinubu-led administration.

Addressing the newsmen on the development, the national secretary of the forum, Magaji Abbas Danbatta regretted that the recent outbursts of the Elders forum did not represent the Northern agenda for peace and national unity of the country which is not negotiable.

He noted that the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, and Minister of State Defence, Bello Matawalle, have been up and doing in their efforts to ensure peace returns to the north when they have the opportunity to serve under Tinubu’s led presidency.

“To us, President Tinubu’s approach to the issues of security in the North so far, especially Northwest is one of the best compared to his immediate predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari’s approach.

“Northern elders should be seen as mediators or opinion shapers on national unity, cohesion, and progress without regional bias. This is key because Nigeria’s unity can’t be negotiated on the page of newspapers”, he added.

The group further supported the Minister of State Defence, over his mature response to the NEF outbursts against President Tinubu, saying, the people behind the claim were more interested in personal gains than the unity and survival of Nigeria.

The group however advised the concerned elders to leverage one of their members, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed who is the Special Adviser to Vice President Kashim Shettima on political matters to facilitate a meeting with the presidency on better to go about their interests rather than through the media.

  • Chibok girls: Parents knock Borno government, threaten legal action

Chibok girls: Parents knock Borno government, threaten legal action

…demand investigation of Chibok girls education fund

Parents of the 276 students of the Government Science Secondary School abducted from their hostels by Boko Haram insurgents in April 2024 have ordered the Borno state government to reverse and apologise for referring to some rescued girls as wives to repentant insurgents in an illegal cohabitation at a rehabilitation center in Maiduguri, Borno state or risk legal action.

The parents described the camping of the returnee abducted girls who were being rehabilitated in Maiduguri by the state government as a ‘second abduction’, saying neither the consent of the girls nor their parents’ was sought before while grouping with their abductors in a rehabilitation center.

The parents spoke under the aegis of the Kibaku (Chibok) Area Development Association (KADA) in Abuja at the 10th-year commemoration of the abduction of the girls, where they knocked the government of Borno state over its insensitivity to the plight of the girls, their parents and their community.

Since the abduction of the girls in 2014, 194 have been rescued while 82 are still missing and unaccounted for.

Within this time, according to the President of the association, Dauda Iliya, 48 parents have lost their lives mostly due to heart conditions while three parents were killed in subsequent Boko Haram attacks.

Iliya said the government of Prof. Babagana Zulum must provide answers to some pertinent questions regarding the treatment of the rescued girls and their parents.

He said: “Within this time also, as a community, we have faced series of attacks and have been victims of vitriolic campaigns aimed at dissuading us from pursuing the cause of our daughters and their welfare, coupled with broken promises from both the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Government of Borno State.

“Even our daughters that escaped within the last three years, until very recently, have been secretly kept in a so-called ‘transit camp’ in Maiduguri along with the Boko Haram terrorists.

“Following the persistence and insistence by some of the parents to see their returnee daughters, the government of Borno State under the leadership of Prof Zulum; the Kibaku community hereby seeks answers to the following questions from the BOSG as a matter of urgency.

“Under what guise and by what legal authority did the BOSG continue the illegal and obnoxious “marriages” between our returnee girls and the so-called “repentant terrorists”?

“Are the girls currently residing in Maiduguri housed with repentant Boko Haram members, or are they housed separately?

“Do the girls have the freedom to return to Chibok whenever they wish, or are there any restrictions on their movement?

“What is the rationale for keeping the girls in Maiduguri rather than allowing them to return to their families in Chibok or to any place of their choice for that matter?

“What activities and support systems are available to the girls while in Maiduguri?”

Given this, among others, besides the rebuttal and apology and a threat of legal action against the Borno state government for failure to comply, the parents demanded the specialised education fund for the Chibok girls domiciled at the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs should be investigated immediately.

In addition, they also demanded an investigation of other sources of funding for the girls’ scholarships without details and others because some of the girls are getting calls from abroad from families that are said to be their sponsors.

“We also want to know who these sponsors are for the Kibaku community to document and appreciate them appropriately.

“Urgent release of the rescued Chibok girls in the custody of Borno state government to their families and not to any terrorist that was in the first place their abductors. The girl’s consent and that of their parents/guardians were not sought before they were abducted, as such their consent must not be sought before delivering them to their parents and their communities

“Avail all our rescued daughters, at home and in school for any organization or group that wants to support them. Anyone that needs to talk to the media, where ever they are must be allowed access always without let or hindrance

“Immediate disclosure of all the names of the daughters reported to be dead as witnessed and established by their classmates and friends while in captivity.

“Two of the parents have since gotten the news of the passing of their daughters and have brought a closure on their own. The parents and the community leadership want this position taken immediately rather than the endless and hopeless waiting”, Iliya said.

The Bring Back Our Girls (BBOGs) movement described governemnts position as a ‘decade of shame’ also demanded that the Chibok Girls Parents Association should be the only recognized voice for the cause of the girls for transparency and accountability.

The group also backed KADA’s demand that the Government Science Secondary School, Chibok be converted into a Unity school with all the facilities provided for conducive academic activities.

Similarly, the BBOGs also said that the report of the Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Sabo (rtd) headed presidential committee on Chibok school girls be made public.

Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili asked of what use is the Panel and its report, 10 years after, if the findings and recommendations are not revealed and implemented.

She said the importance of the work of the panel cannot be over-emphasized considering that it took the Panel to make the government believe that the abduction was real.

The BBOGs said in line with world best practices, the Federal government should work on disclosure, accountability and closure of the Chibok girls’ issue.

“That’s what we demand”, Ezekwesili said.

  • Justice Ahmad Belgore: That compassionate lawyer in Kano

Justice Ahmad Belgore: That compassionate lawyer in Kano

    By Yushau A. Shuaib

He heartily observed the fast from the first to the last day of Ramadan. Throughout the 30 days, from 10 March to 9 April 2024, as was his tradition, Justice Ahmad Olanrewaju Belgore provided plenty of food and gift items to the poor and the needy and various families and groups.

On the last day of Ramadan, just a week before his 71st birthday, after breaking his fast, observing his night prayers and performing Zakat Fitr, the retired Justice of the Court of Appeal answered the call of Almighty God. He could not witness the Eid-Fitr, which was only hours away the following day.

His death shocked everyone. In various tributes, Justice Belgore has been described as a jurist par excellence, with sterling qualities and without blemish. He was ranked alongside Niki Tobi and Karibi Whyte for his deep knowledge of jurisprudence. Others described him as a bold and erudite judge with a keen sense of justice.

In his condolence message, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, a retired Justice of the Court of Appeal, said Belgore was one of the finest Justices who contributed in no small measure to the growth and development of the justice system, the judiciary and humanity in general.

Before his death, political and community leaders acknowledged and appreciated his sterling qualities, as evident during his 70th birthday last year, when Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said the bench and other stakeholders in the justice sector would miss him for making the nation proud with his brilliance, industry, and sound character.

Also, in a tribute, renowned biographer and author of “Ilorin Emirate’s Frontliners”, Abubakar Sidiq Imam, wrote, “Apart from giving a good account of himself on the bench, Justice Belgore was also very helpful to many younger ones… offering quality assistances to many in the realm of job facilitation, career progression, counselling, and financial support.”

I had a memorable encounter with this legal luminary when he came to Kano as a humble, well-dressed, and jovial lawyer who always gave us small boys sweets and biscuits. So, when I read the tributes pouring in after his death, focusing only on his time on the bench, without any background to his practice at the bar, I wondered what the reason could be.

The now-late Justice Belgore came to Kano in the early 1980s after his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme in the Niger State Ministry of Justice, where he also headed the Legal Aid Council and chaired the state’s Rents Tribunal.

He was then a lawyer at the prestigious Majiyagbe Law Chamber, founded by Jonathan Babatunde Majiyagbe, the first practising lawyer in northern Nigeria to be elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1980 and former President of Rotary International.

Belgore and others used to attend a forum in Kano called “The Markazi”, which my father, Imam Abdulhameed Shuaib Agaka, hosted. There, they chatted and debated topical issues in Arabic. Some notable members of the advocacy forum included the present Imam Imale, Sheikh Abdullahi Abdulhameed; Imam Murtala Alaya; Dr. AbdulSalam Alabidun of Bayero University Kano (BUK); and Prof Abdulbaqi Shuaib of the University of Sokoto, among others.

Later, young scholars like Sheikh Habibullahi Adam Alilory of Markaz Agege, Professor Abubakar Aliagan of the University of Ilorin, Sheikh Adam Yahaya of Darul Hikma and Dr Aminullahi Gambari of BUK joined a similar interactive advocacy forum.

Resolutions from those interactions influenced Lawyer Belgore, Professor Oba Abdulraheem, Alhaji S. O. Aliyu and other influential figures in Kano in providing educational guidance and facilitating scholarships and job placements for people from the Ilorin Emirate.

Beyond being a modest, humble, and eloquent legal practitioner. Belgore motivated some of us to become lawyers due to his compassionate approach to the legal practice and his reluctance to pursue cases that could lead to hatred and enmity among litigants.

We were told he didn’t like to take briefs about divorce and issues that could cause him to worry or entertain concerns about fairness and equity. Justice Belgore once told us about a bitter experience when two lawyers representing a husband and a wife in a divorce case fought profusely in court. After the judge granted the dissolution of the marriage, with one of the couples not satisfied with the judgment and crying profusely, the two lawyers merely drove away in the same car, beaming with smiles, as if it was just another case to them, even though life had been fundamentally impacted negatively.

In June 1987, he set up his own chambers known as Messrs Ahmad O. Belgore & Co in Kano, where he provided free legal services to those with genuine cases but no finances to prosecute them. He was a compassionate lawyer who genuinely cared about his clients and ordinary people who came for his advice. He sensitively approached legal matters by empathising with his clients on their challenges.

Belgore adhered to high ethical standards by prioritising honesty, integrity, and transparency in his interactions. Beyond that, as our role model, he advised us on career choices and provided for our emotional, mental, and financial needs. Many students benefited from his support, more than scholarships offered in some official quarters.

It was in August 1990 that he became a judge of the Kwara State High Court of Justice. Coming from the Belgore family, most of whose members are either lawyers or jurists, his appointment to the bench was not a surprise to us. Other Belgores in the profession included a former Chief Justice of the Federation, a former Chief Justice of the Federal High Court, and Justices of the High Court at the state level.

As a justice of the Appeal Court, Belgore treated everyone with respect, remained unbiased, and was free from external influences. In cases in which negative insinuations were made through social media posts or where litigants attempted to question the integrity of his court or the panel of judges, he presided over, Justice Ahmed Belgore often recused himself and members of panels he led from such cases and advised the litigant to petition the Nigerian Judicial Council (NJC).

In one such instance, Belgore and his panel were vindicated in the end, as the NJC dismissed the allegations for lack of merit or evidence of misconduct. As a judge, he embodied qualities that went beyond legal expertise. Overall, he maintained patience, open-mindedness, and courtesy. Unsurprisingly, he often allowed a member of the usually three-member panel of the Court of Appeal to read the judgments of cases on his behalf.

Born on 18 April 1953, the late Justice Ahmad Belgore studied Law at Ahmadu Bello University and became a solicitor and advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1979. Throughout his career, he held various roles, including Judge of the High Court of Kwara State, as mentioned, Justice of Appeal in the Republic of the Gambia, and Justice of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria.

Belgore served as Presiding Justice in different divisions of the Court of Appeal. He was a member of the Body of Benchers of Nigeria and later a Life Bencher. As mentioned, he retired on 18 April 2023 at 70 and died on 9 April 2024 at 71. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.

It’s too early to threaten Nigerians with 2027 election, Hayab tells NEF

Former Chairman of the Kaduna State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. John Joseph Hayab, has told the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) that it is too early to threaten Nigerians with 2027 election.

In a statement yesterday, Hayab stated categorically that, “It is sad to read that some members of NEF are saying North will not vote for Tinubu in the next election in 2027.”

As a stakeholder, he said: “I find this call coming at the wrong time and lacking in good reasoning. The speed at which our naira is improving against dollars shows Tinubu is doing better than our almighty Buhari.”

He further explained that the speed at which Nigerians got the Kuriga school children from Kaduna  State back is a huge progress in handling insecurity compared to how innocent parents suffered when Bethel Baptist School children and others were kidnapped.

He, however, advised that, “NEF should instead seek ways to collaborate with this government to find solutions to insecurity, hunger, improved economy and making our currency add value for the overall progress and development of the country.

“Threatening the government with no vote in 2027 shows they may not have a good heart for the progress of the country but are only interested in what they will benefit.”

He challenged bodies  like NEF to use their  groups to support and challenge their leaders or government authorities to make the country great and a better place for all Nigerians.

“Let us not bring issues that have no basis at this time for the progress of our land. We need elders that will help unite the country, offer useful advice that will help the nation not coming up with provocative statements that will only provoke other regions to start making statements that will further bring division and  confusion in the country,” he further advised.

A Leading Pro-democracy group, Kwara Must Change has insisted that the Otoge revolution of 2019 that ushered in the current Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq administration would replicate itself in 2027.

Kwara Must Change was one of the groups that championed the popular Otoge political revolution in 2019.

The group said it had initiated moves to sustain the newly installed progressive order in Kwara state come 2027.

The group also disclosed that it rallied over 70 youth groups in 2018 to rescue the state from the Saraki dynasty and said that the mission to sustain the progressive order is a collective responsibility, noting that there’s no success without successor.

The group’s Convener, Abdulrazaq Hamzat during a focused group discussion involving several youths across the three senatorial districts.

Hamzat said that the task of sustaining the gains of Otoge should be treated with equal determination as the Otoge revolution itself.

He added that only those who know the value of the revolution will do whatever it takes to sustain it.

He said that the group has been following public conversation about the direction the state should head in 2027 and we are pleased to say that we will not be spectators in the process.

Hamzat explained that the youths of Kwara will determine the next direction of the state, just as they did in 2019 and we will be playing an active role in shaping the process.

32 Kaduna General Hospitals not renovated in last 20 years – Sani

    • Says over 1,500 schools in eight LGAs don’t have fence

Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has said that the 32 general hospitals in the State, have not been renovated in the last 20 years, a situation which he said is unfortunately making citizens travel to neighbouring states for medical care.

Governor Sani, who stated this while addressing stakeholders from the 23 local government areas of the state, also said that over 1,500 schools in the eight frontline local government areas of the state, do not have fence.

Sani, who lamented that most of the hospitals were in sorry states, however, stated that his administration has resolved to, in the first phase, remodel, reconstruct and reequip six of the general hospitals, two in each of the three senatorial zones of the state.

The Governor also disclosed that, as part of efforts to complement the government’s commitment to implementing the Safe School Initiative, two prominent Kaduna-based business moguls, Alhaji Adamu Atta of Fifth Chucker and Alhaji Bukar Shettima of Barbados, are to build fences for 100 schools.

According to the Governor, “One of the major areas of focus of our government is healthcare. In the last one month, I have received reports from our Deputy Governor, who is one of the most prominent, established public health specialists in Nigeria, that our 32 general hospitals in Kaduna as we speak, most of them are not functional.

“Because of that, most of the patients from Kaduna have to travel to some neighbouring states for medical attention. This is unacceptable. And that is why we have decided to remodel, reconstruct at least six of the 32 general hospitals. This project will be starting by the grace of God on Monday, that is in the next few days.

“These general hospitals that we are remodelling and reconstructing are; General Hospital Rigasa, General Hospital Maigana, General Hospital Gwantu, General Hospital Kafanchan, General Hospital Giwa and General Hospital Ikara…

“We are also focusing on education because we believe education is the greatest enabler. That is the only thing we can give to the children of the poor and they would be anything they want to be. This is why we are also investing heavily in the area of education.
