AbdulRazaq briefs Kwara professionals in Lagos

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at the weekend met with a rich crop of Kwara Professionals resident in Lagos, debriefing them on the journey since 2019.

He also shared the measurable strides of his administration across different sectors and his vision for the State when re-elected.

The briefing was a continuation of the Governor’s multi-prong stakeholders’ engagements that peaked a few months ago with town hall and village square meetings held in different parts of the state and broadcast live on the revamped state-owned television and radio station and other private media platforms.

Quoting facts and figures from the past and present, the Governor said the administration met a collapsed basic education sector while the Colleges of Education were all down owing to nonpayment of salaries and lack of accreditation.

He said the administration has been able to turn things around in the area of infrastructural and human resource development, welfare for workers, and the introduction of technology to give the Kwara child a headstart in life.

The Governor said the introduction of KwaraLEARN programme has raised school enrollment by at least 45% and boosted numeracy and literacy skills in the first phase that comprised just four local governments, adding that the programme now operates in 11 local government areas and would extend to the rest of the state later this year.

He also spoke about how the administration has improved healthcare delivery at the primary and secondary levels and won the confidence of different development partners like UNICEF, while its investments in the sector have earned the state university an accreditation to run medicine programme with medical school billed to take off at the Ilorin General Hospital.

AbdulRazaq said the state no longer tops the national table in open defecation as it did before in 2019, while Kwara now posts great indices in maternal health care and hospital attendance.

He said the administration has revamped many of the dead waterworks which were largely built during the Sardauna years, and built two new ones to improve water supply in the state, including in the capital city where tanker was once the source of public water supply.

“We have been deliberate in spreading development, and we are glad that our people have a better sense of ownership of their state today than ever before. What we have done is to stabilise Kwara for growth and development,” he said.

“We have many road projects across the state. We have designed a sustainable development plan, an agricultural master plan, and a new master plan for our capital city, and we are designing for other parts of the state. We are planning different industrial parks, including one at Eiyenkorin, another in Kwara South, and an agroprocessing factory in Kwara North,” he said, adding that the administration’s economic expansion efforts such as support for small scale enterprises are fast making Kwara a new hub.

The Governor also spoke about his many road projects across the state, including a plan to construct the road that links Agbamu to Ila Orangun to boost economic growth in that axis.

He said the state is attracting different positive attention and investments, including an upcoming $50m Olam project for which some lands are being allocated and a share of the $10bn renewable energy project to be funded by the US government.

The Governor, who took time to respond to questions from the professionals, also spoke about the herders-farmers’ issue and the need to address it as a solution to food security and national cohesion, the status of Shonga Farm, the garment factory of the administration, IV-TEC, and tourism potentials of the state.

AbdulRazaq also urged the Kwara professionals to support the candidature of APC’s Bola Tinubu, who he said will clearly favour Kwara in infrastructural development and other dividends of democracy.

The professionals took turns to commend the Governor’s developmental strides in the state, with many of them mentioning different areas they have felt his work back home, including the interventions in the remotest corners of the state like Onila community in Irepodun.

“It is profound indeed that your government pays good attention to basic needs of the people, including in Onila. We are very proud of that,” Mr. Emmanuel Oyebanji SAN told the Governor, urging him to do a lot more.

Professor Bayo Oladipo, the dean of the faculty of Education at the University of Lagos, said he was impressed by the Governor’s focus on the development of the education sector, especially the employment of qualified teachers.

He charged the Governor to pay more attention to the Colleges of Education to ensure that they deliver on their core mandate of training quality teachers.

“We have no regret at all that we supported you in 2019. We are glad about what you have achieved with the little resources. People talk about the modest change here and there,” Mr. Bayo Atoyebi, a lawyer and entrepreneur, said.

Otunba Ademola Adedoyin, a PR expert, said the Governor’s briefing was quite comprehensive, clear, and enlightening as it touched on the situation in 2019, the strides and challenges of the administration, and his roadmap for the future.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Senator Aishatu Ahmed Binani has appealed to her supporters to dress their gender as approved by God.

She specifically asked men dressing in female clothes to her campaign rallies or any such events to desist from it.

Our correspondent reports that a number of male youths carry their support for Binani to the height of wearing female clothes to celebrate the fact of Binani is the only female governorship candidate of the APC.

Binani, however, frowned at this at a campaign rally in Gombi, Gombi local government area of the state during the weekend.

While thanking the people for giving her support, she appealed to those of them dressing in women’s attire to stop it, as she has respect for all men and expects men to remain men.

She asked the people of Gombi to vote for not only her during the general elections but for all APC candidates from top to bottom.

The member representing Gombi/Hong federal constituency, Yusuf captain Buba told the people of Gombi that voting for Binani and all APC candidates will consolidate the gains that had been made so far.

Also speaking, a prominent supporter of Binani, Ambassador Fati Balla said now is the time for a woman to be given a good chance to lead Adamawa State and become Nigeria’s first elected female governor.

She said Binani is particularly qualified for the office after how well she has performed in political offices, first as a House of Representatives member and as a Senator.

Benue not involved in Nassarawa killings, says Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has described as mischievous, allegations linking his government to recent killings from an air raid on a settlement in Nasarawa State.

Last week, an unknown helicopter dropped a bomb on suspected militia kinsmen and killed over 50 persons.

The incident occurred between Nassarawa and Benue communities in the Rukubi area of Nassarawa state.

The governor stated that neither he nor his government had a hand in the unfortunate incident.

He maintained that he did not order anyone to carry out such an act, insisting that he has no such powers to order such an air raid operation which resulted in the killings.

Governor Ortom spoke yesterday during a Thanksgiving Mass for the official commissioning of a Parish House built by him at Holy Cross Parish, Ogbolokuta, Ulayi in Ado Local Government Area.

He explained that contrary to the wrong narrative being peddled, it may have been a result of intelligence gathered by the military high command.

The governor, who wondered why he would be linked to the incident, said it was pure mischief for anyone to attempt to rope him into what he had no knowledge of.

Earlier in a homily, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi encouraged the faithful to imbibe doing works of charity to fellow human beings, stating that doing so was to God Himself on which account entry into heaven will be determined.

MACBAN chides presidency, military over silence on Nasarawa airstrike

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the silence of the presidency, the Federal Government and the military since the brutal death of pastoralists in Nasarawa State.

MACBAN described the silence as reprehensible and lack of regards to the loss of lives of ordinary Nigerians.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer, Muhammad Nura Abdullahi demands explanation over the “seemingly intentional killings of over 40 pastoralists and butchers”.

The herders leadership said the incident occurred in Rukubi village of Doma Local Government Area on January 25.

The pastoralists had reportedly gone to Makurdi earlier in the day to retrieve their 1,250 livestock impounded by the Benue State livestock guards after paying a fine of N29million.

“If nothing, we expect the President to commiserate with families of the victims for this heinous crime. MACBAN recalls this is the third time in one year that the Air Force was involved in bombing of pastoralists and livestock in Nasarawa, Benue and Taraba States.

“The recent killings constitute war crime and a panel of inquiry must be constituted to find out on whose authority the drone/aircraft was used and punish the culprits.”

Abdullahi told the authorities that the late pastoralists were bona fide Nigerians and have equal rights as every other citizen.

“The loss of one life is bad enough talk less of over 40 innocent lives in a single swoop. This is unacceptable and most despicable crime against humanity.

“We also call on the National Human Rights Commission to investigate this case and other cases involving shootings by the Air Force in Nasarawa,” the statement added.

  • Tambuwal urges NJC, FG to increase judicial officers’ wages

Tambuwal urges NJC, FG to increase judicial officers’ wages

Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State has urged the Federal Government and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to upscale the wages of judges and other judicial officers.
Tambuwal made the appeal on Friday in Sokoto when he swore in five judges of the state high courts and two khadis for the state Sharia courts.
Those sworn in as high court judges are: Bashar Ibrahim, Fatima Ahmad Suka, Abubakar Adamu, Kabiru Muhammad and Amina Modi Yabo; while
Idris Adamu and Mustafa Abdullahi Ahmad were sworn-in as khadis.
Last year an equal number of judges and khadis were inaugurated, bringing the total number of judges and khadis in the state to 17 and 8 respectively.
According to him, the wages of the judicial officers are far below what it is expected to be, and it can’t be remedied by states because it is within the exclusive purview of the Federal Government and the NJC.
He urged the FG, and the NJC “to, as a matter of urgency, commence the review of the wages of our judicial officers.
“It is long overdue. It is unfortunate if you hear what a judge takes home as his pay. Our judicial officers’ take home can’t take them home. It is for government to look inwards, with a view to reviewing it upwards, especially these days that we have terrible inflation in the country,” he said.

He, however, pledged that the state government will continue to make life easy for the judiciary staff by providing “whatever we are supposed to provide, despite that we’re facing very excruciating economic challenges.”
Describing the judiciary in Sokoto State as “growing in size and capabilities that are being complemented by the infrastructure and right atmosphere provided for it to work,” the governor urged the new judges to be just and fair in accordance with their oath of office.
“Make sure that you didn’t bring in any of your personal interests on matters brought before you,” he said, expressing the administration’s belief in their competencies and capacities, saying he was “absolutely confident that you can do the jobs.”

Elections: ICPC, NFIU, CODE to clampdown on vote-buying

CONNECTED Development (CODE) in collaboration with the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) would be clamping down on anyone with plans or who attempts to buy votes in the coming general elections.

CODE also says it is finalising talks with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on same issue and would be deploying over 20,000 citizen observers across various polling units in the country.

Founder of CODE and Follow the Money, Hamzat Lawal, said the organisation also intends to secure a commitment from front-running presidential aspirants on education, especially girl-child education.

Lawal made the disclosures in Abuja at a press conference organised to launch the “Vote4GirlsEducation” campaign, in line with the Girl-child Education Project of CODE.

He said: “We are hoping on working with the anti-corruption agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to clamp down on people who want to make our election a transaction.

“We have a solid partnership with the ICPC, there is an ongoing conversation with the EFCC; hopefully we would be able to finalise on it and we are also working with NFIU, knowing that CODE is deploying over 20,000 citizen observers across various polling units in the country.”

He added, “The Nigerian elections are here again, and over the years, we have observed low political will and low commitment by state actors to provide gender-responsive education policies, programmes and budgeting. It is in this vein, in line with the organisational objectives of Malala Fund, that we are launching an aggressive campaign to mobilise and educate citizens to ask critical questions from aspiring office holders during this electioneering period.

•POS operator laments rejection of old notes by customers

A coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) on Thursday, took the campaign for acceptance of the newly redesigned naira notes to Garki Modern Market in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The coalition said the move was part of efforts to sensitise market men and women to the new naira notes.

It also explained that the campaign was to promote the cashless policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

This is as traders in the market expressed concern over the unavailability of the redesigned naira notes in banks and rejection of old naira notes by their clients.

Speaking during the sensitisation on Thursday in Abuja, President of the Coalition of Civil Society on Good Governance, (CCSGG), Bassey Etuk, informed the traders that the CBN has resolved not to extend the January 31 deadline for the implementation of the new policy, hence the need for them to do away with the old naira notes to avoid expiration.

Etuk, who insisted that the implementation of the policy will strengthen the Nigerian economy, said the cashless policy has come to stay.

He said: “We support the policies by the CBN Governor, and we will educate other Nigerians about these policies because it is for their good and wellbeing, including unborn Nigerians’.

“The CBN has mandated all banks that they should desist from putting old naira notes into the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM). When you go to ATM machines, what you will find now is the new naira notes. And that is why CBN has come so boldly to tell all Nigerians that the deadline for you and I to return all notes is January 31, which is next week, Tuesday.”

A Point Of Sale (POS) operator who identified himself as Mohammed Jegu llamented the level at which customers were rejecting the old naira notes at his stands, maintaining that the new notes are not available in the banks.

THE Niger State governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello has cautioned corps members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) to avoid the temptation of joining the bandwagon of undemocratic agitation as the 2023 elections draw closer.

The governor gave the caution at the formal opening of the 2023 Batch A Stream 1 Orientation Course of corps members deployed to Niger State, saying the corps members would be involved in several electoral activities, hence the need for them to participate in these activities with some level of discipline.

“Your service year is coming at a time when the nation needs your dexterity as vanguards of society. You should use your energy, vigour and enthusiasm to fully partake in issues of nation-building and political assignments that you might be involved in.

“2023 is an election year and there are a lot of political activities. We believe that the NYSC corps members should be able to participate in this process with some level of discipline,” he said.

Bello, who was represented by the Secretary to the Niger State Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Matane, urged the corps members to shun all acts that are capable of undermining the peace and security of the nation, stressing the need for them to embrace determination, hard work, and sincerity of purpose, which are the major hallmarks of success in life.
