Mass prosecution of defaulters to begin in 2023 over N29b ground rent debt

    From Gbenga Omokhunu, Abuja

The Coordinating Committee on the Recovery of Outstanding Ground Rent and Other Related Charges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has announced that it will soon commence mass prosecution of titleholders, who have refused to pay their debt despite several appeals for them to come forward and clear the outstanding liabilities.

The committee said massive legal action (court cases), will begin in the first quarter of 2023 to ensure that all debtors are brought to face justice and perhaps, have their property forfeited.

According to the committee, the information is to serve as the last reminder in the outgoing year and also form the basis for what defaulters should expect as we prepare to usher in year 2023.

It said since some of the Ground Rent debtors are recalcitrant in paying their prescribed fees, the Committee has no other option than to take this legal procedure, which might culminate in the final confiscation of the affected property.

As earlier explained, the Committee intends to consider publishing the names of all those, who have refused to honour their statutory obligation by clearing their outstanding liabilities, especially those whose cases are before the appropriate court of law.

The publication of the names of the debtors already charged to court, the Committee believes will send a strong message to other defaulters that the FCT Administration is determined to recover the huge debt owed it by property owners in the Territory.

It will be recalled that a caveat has also been placed to deny such titleholders access to the property, and eventually forfeit the same to the government.

Accordingly, the caveat formally placed is expected to safeguard such properties from being tampered with, especially by attempting to sell or transfer ownership, because the matter is being heard in court.

ministration because such actions will serve as a deterrent to all those recalcitrant to honour their obligations.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director, Information and Communication, FCT, Muhammad Sule, the FCT Administration is determined to recover all Ground Rent debts owed by property owners in Abuja, and all necessary procedures will be followed to achieve this.

It would be recalled that the FCT Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adesola Olusade inaugurated a debt recovery committee with the mandate to recover the outstanding debts owed the FCT Administration with a particular interest in ground rents and other sundry fees in the Land Administration as well as other Land related departments.

He said he remained confident that if the 2023 elections were to be held anytime, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates at all levels would win elections in the state.

“Before now, some people will sit in a room and write results, declaring whoever the winner of the election, but with BVAS, we are not scared because we have supporters,” he said.

Yahaya appealed to potential voters in the ward to ensure that they collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), adding that the PVCs remained the only tools for electorates to choose and determine their leaders during an election.

As President Muhammadu Buhari plans to inaugurate legacy projects in Kogi State, the Ohi of Eika, Mallam Umar MomohJimoh Opewu has applauded Governor Yahaya Bello for his achievements in office especially the construction of Unity House, the newly built palace of Ohinoyi.

The traditional ruler who called on the people to join hands with the governor in his determination to transform the state told reporters in his palace that the peace and security of lives and property being enjoyed in the state were as a result of the governor’s sleepless nights.

While urging for continuous prayers for the governor, the traditional ruler said since the governor assumed office, he has succeeded in curbing the high rate of insecurity that bedevilled the state in the past.

He said: “The governor must be commended for the construction of the Reference Hospital, the Unity House, road construction, the establishment of a university, model Schools across the state and above all, uniting the people across the senatorial districts.

“I have never witnessed this level of monumental and rapid development since the creation of this state. The special attention to the traditional rulers’ welfare and their involvement in the governance and security management of their various domains is novel and commendable. It is not in vain when you see Mr President coming to the state to commission some of these legacy projects amidst his crowded schedule. We appreciate Mr President for finding time to make us proud and for his support for the governor.

“There’s no doubt that the governor has wiped away the tears of the people in so many communities, especially those who had never experienced any development project in their areas. The model schools, and hospitals among other signature projects will certainly provide employment and job opportunities for the locals and beyond. And considering the multiplier effect of that, it would address poverty reduction and a boom in economic activities. We, the people of Eika commend the governor and welcome the President to Kogi State”.

Group faults establishment of N350m tannery project in Daura

The Oodua Youth Parliament has faulted the decision of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) to site the N350 million tannery project in Daura, Katsina State.

Speaker of the Parliament, Abdulmajeed Oyeniye said it was unfair that an institute located in the Northwest would choose to site such a project within the same region.

Addressing reporters in Abuja yesterday, Oyeniye urged the institute to reverse the decision in the spirit of federal character and fairness.

He said: “Are other states like Lagos, Oyo or Ekiti not part of the country again or was the institute established only for the Northwest region? This is unacceptable to the generality of Nigerians and must be reversed in the spirit of federal character and fairness.”

He expressed dissatisfaction with the Director General of the institute, Prof Mohammed Yakubu, saying the institute has failed to live up to the expectations of providing job opportunities to Nigerians and help to boost the economy.

He said: “NILEST was conceived with the aim of harnessing the vast potentials in the flourishing livestock industry in the country, especially in northern Nigeria.

“With over 100 million cows, goats and ships with thousand slaughters daily, Nigeria was projected to be a net exporter of hides and an industrial hub in the leather and skin industrial sector. More than 20 years down the line nothing has changed and it got worse under the present administration of Professor Mohammed Kabir Yakubu.

  • Ishaku: I’ll sing about my achievements like a canary

Ishaku: I’ll sing about my achievements like a canary

Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, has said he would sing his praises like the “canary” because of his various achievements across the state in the over seven years of his administration.

He spoke when he received traditional rulers who came to felicitate with him in his Takum country home over the Christmas.

The governor boasted of his achievements, which he said include the dual carriageway in Jalingo and the Jalingo water project, among others.

He challenged “doubting Thomases” to go and see the projects for themselves.

“Yes, I will sing like a canary. When a canary sings, it is sweet because he has a message to tell you. I do have a message. So I will sing my song.

“They say you shouldn’t praise yourself, but the politicians taught me otherwise.

“They said, carry your bugle and praise yourself before you even lay one gutter. But me I said, I will praise myself after I have done the road.

“So if you are doubting that I have done the dual carriageway, go to Jalingo.

“If you are doubting, I have done water all around the state, go to Jalingo,” Ishaku said.

The governor said the 5.3 million litre Jalingo water works constructed by his administration will supply Jalingo city beyond 2045.

Ishaku announced that the 35-kilometer Pantinapu-Jalingo airport dual carriageway has been completed.

“What is remaining is the lighting system.”

He directed law enforcement agencies to enforce the relocation of trailers to two new parks situated at the two ends of the highway.

“We have two trailer parks in Pantinapu, left and right. No trailer would be allowed to park anywhere between Pantinapu and after the airport.

“Already, you notice, most of the trailers parked around the stadium up to the flyover and backwards to the junction of Pantinapu.

“So those of you who are in charge, particularly the road safety and civil defence, I hand it directly to you.

“Make sure nobody parks there. They should move to the trailer park where they would pay fees to drive in.

“Where there would be a washroom, police station, service point, mechanics etc. So we are doing a wholistic work on the dual carriageway,” he stated.

Ishaku expressed confidence that, with the level of achievements done by his administration, the PDP on whose platform he became governor, would retain power in the state in 2023.
