NGO urges teamwork to enhance social justice system

The Public Administration and Social Development Consult, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has called for stakeholders’ collective efforts in enhancing social justice.

The organisation noted that the slow justice system had impeded social justice delivery.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Consult Mrs Margaret Ibeku made the call at a briefing in Abuja ahead of the social justice conference and awards scheduled for October 27 this year.

Ibeku, who is the Chairperson of the National Steering Committee of the Social Justice Conference and Awards, identified lack of awareness and slow dispensation of justice as some of the major factors affecting Nigeria’s social justice system.

She said: “One of the first challenges of social justice in Nigeria is awareness.

“Most Nigerians don’t even know some of the organisations to go to for redress if there is any infringement on their rights or they are lagging in the opportunities that ought to be available to them.”

Ibeku stated that the organisation was partnering with the Public Complaints Commission (PCC) to organise the maiden Social Justice Conference and Award.

She also said the maiden event was aimed at promoting awareness of citizens’ rights, identifying the vacuum and bridging the gap to promote the Nigerian social justice system, adding that the conference also covered issues of oil and gas, internally displaced persons, housing sector and other sectors of the economy.

“This conference will bring together the academia, technocrats, civil society, public servants, interest groups, students, cultural interest and religious groups, researchers and private organisations to interact and x-ray topical issues that border on social justice and good governance,” she said.

She said while the former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu would present a keynote address at the conference, other stakeholders, including politicians, would be invited for discussion on the 2023 general elections.

She said the body would thereafter present its White Paper on recommendations to the government and other stakeholders to promote social justice in Nigeria.

Ibeku said highlights of the occasion would include the presentation of awards to ministries, departments and agencies of government, private organisations and individuals who had put in so much into delivering social justice in Nigeria.

Ibeku urged Nigerians to visit its website www.socialjusticeaward.com to nominate recipients for various categories of awards.

The FCT Administration is desirous of recovering the over N29 billion ground rents owed it by property owners.

According to a statement yesterday by the Director of Information and Communication, Muhammad Sule, the government insisted that since all entreaties have failed, it has no other option than to commence the prosecution of the first batch of the defaulting property owners.

Fuel scarcity looms in Benue as tanker drivers, IPMAN shut NPC depot, petrol stations

Acute fuel scarcity has hit Makurdi, the Benue State capital and its environs following strike action embarked upon by Petrol Tanker Drivers of NUPENG, Apir Depot.

The PTD of NUPENG, NNPC Apir Depot are at loggerheads with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited enforcement team called “Operation White.”  The controversy has led to the boycott of NNPC Apir depot by the entire depot community.

Members of the Independent Marketers Association of Nigeria IPMAN, in the state, have also joined the strike in solidarity with drivers and shut down their filling stations in Makurdi on Friday.

The Nation investigation revealed that Petrol Tanker Drivers alleged that the NNPC enforcement team called “Operation White” are supposed to operate on the borders to know the exact number of litres of petrol taken across the borders to other neighbouring countries. But instead of monitoring at the borders, they are mounting roadblocks across the state and impounding trucks load of petrol.

A member of IPMAN and PTD who pleaded anonymity because they were not allowed to speak to the press on the matter, said fuel trucks are made to pay over N1m before they are released.

They vowed not to open their petrol stations until the matter is addressed by the NNPC Limited.

As at 5:30pm yesterday (Friday) when all independent petrol marketers shut the stations, the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) had jumped from N180 to N300 per litre.

Only NNPC Mega Station on Otukpo Road was seen open and selling petroleum products as at press time.

When The Nation called the Operation Manager of NNPC in Benue State, he said he was in a meeting with the aggrieved marketers to resolve the issues and promised to call back. He, however, never did as at the time of filing in this report.

Motorists who spoke to The Nation appealed to the NNPCL, the PTD and IPMAN to sort out their differences in the interest of the common man.
