Stakeholders seek African Union’s interventions on TB

The Stop TB Partnership has urged the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire to push for more high-level engagements on tuberculosis (TB) with the African Union (AU) and other global bodies, to enable more funding and interventions to end the TB scourge in Nigeria.

Noting that the government has made tremendous efforts in other programmes such as malaria and HIV, the Stop TB Partnership, which is a United Nations-hosted organisation, urged the minister to table the issues surrounding the prioritisation of TB in Nigeria and the African Union.

The Executive Director of Stop TB Partnership Geneva, Dr Lucica Ditiu, who made this known during her meeting with the minister in Abuja, said: “I know the pushes for malaria and HIV at the global and regional levels are very important. I would welcome it if you think of including TB.

“That is because there is fragmentation that is happening here; on HIV, there is NACA and NASCP. You have the Malaria Programme and End Malaria Council. But what is missing from here is what is happening with TB that kills more than each of these. Especially if they are in the directorate of public health, where is the TB that kills more than malaria and HIV together in Nigeria?

“It will look like an agenda push from outside; because there is a movement of malaria by the African Union (AU), then automatically it should happen in the country.

“I urge you to consider including TB in there because it doesn’t make sense. When you have 130,000 people in Nigeria dying because of tuberculosis, and to hear that there is absolutely no movement in creating high-level engagement for TB, it doesn’t make sense to me.

“You are in the Regional Committee in Togo. We have some sessions with the African Union there, and we are working with them for an MoU. In your interventions, you can say- ‘we know TB is killing so much in Africa, why are we not having WHO-led efforts in the African region or with partners etc.?”

The minister said: “We will try our best to increase funding and speed up diagnostics. We are still working very hard with the private sector. We are working with the Association of General Medical Practitioners and Guild of Medical Directors to get all involved across the states participating in the screening and identification of cases.”

  • Buhari explains delay in road projects completion

Buhari explains delay in road projects completion

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday blamed the delay in the completion of various road projects across the country on the series of amendments to various budgetary provisions presented to the National Assembly.

Buhari, who spoke through the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami stated this while inaugurating the first phase of the Gombe-Yola Road which terminated in Kaltungo at Kumo in Gombe State.

President Buhari said that on many occasions, because of the power vested in them, the National Assembly often amend the budgetary provisions and that affect the implementation of many road projects.

He pleaded with the citizens living in the Northeast states to engage their representatives in the National Assembly to ensure that there is enough budgetary provision for all these roads in the 2023 budget, saying that if that is provided for, then the road projects will be completed soon.

He added that the essence of that role is to ensure that any budgetary provision that is for road construction will not be tampered with.

President Buhari said the secret of the road construction depends on the budgetary provision on one hand and the amount of money released on the other hand.

“On the release of money allocated for road construction, we will reach out to the Ministry of Finance to ensure that the money budgeted is released.

“So, budgetary provision is the primary foundation for the completion of all these roads,” he said.

The Minister of Works, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) who spoke through the Director of Highways Northeast, Celestine Shausu said the road projects represented the government investment in road transport infrastructure which is a commitment of the Buhari administration as a driver for economic growth and prosperity.

He expressed his gratitude to the Federal Ministry of Finance, the members of the National Assembly, especially Chairmen of the Senate and House committees on Works in the 8th and 9th Assemblies for their support.

Garment factory with 2,000 direct jobs ready 2022 – Kwara Gov

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said the State’s garment factory will be commissioned in 2022 with a take off capacity to hire 2,000 direct labour.

Speaking with dozens of APC youths, progressive social media influencers and some online news publishers at the weekend, the Governor said the idea is to make Kwara a hub for garment production, which can benefit from the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) of the United States and other economic benefits.

The Governor added that other projects of the administration like the visual arts centre, Adeta Yebumot Road, Ilesha Gwanara and Osi-Obbo-Aiyegunle Road, General Tunde Idiagbon Bridge, among others, will also be completed in the fourth quarter of the year.

He explained that the N27.2bn bond the administration took is being deployed for what it is meant, adding that the private bond is governed by very strict rules that protect public interest and disallow mismanagement of any kind.

The Governor said the delay in the bond issuance last year and the inflation trends have both affected the pace of the projects, although the challenges are being surmounted.

AbdulRazaq however said the administration has completed several projects and implemented many programmes with great impacts across the state, adding that he hardly believes that project commissioning or flag-off is synonymous with good governance as some Nigerians may appear to believe.

The administration has made huge impacts in the lives of the people in various sectors like health, water, social safety nets, support for businesses, education, gender inclusion and youth empowerment, and rural urban development, AbdulRazaq said.

The Governor said the administration is constructing 39 digital literacy centres across Kwara State in partnership with UBEC — apart from the innovation hub which he said would also be inaugurated later this year.

AbdulRazaq also said the current public officers are making huge sacrifices in the service of the state, as the era of flamboyance is gone because of the need to rebuild the state and channel resources to greater good.

The Governor commended the attendees for their support, fair criticism and representation, and understanding over the years.

The attendees comprised some members of Kwara Online Publishers Association of Nigeria; Kwara APC New Media Team; Kwara Rebuilders; and many other independents.

The Governor said the administration will continue to have constructive exchange of ideas with Kwarans across various platforms.

Post-primary conflict: Moves to remove Adamawa APC chairman stalled

A process set in motion by some party executives to remove the chairman of Adamawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Ibrahim Bilal, has suffered a setback.

Twelve out of the 36 members of the state executive committee had signed a petition calling for the sack of the chairman, but by the weekend, only one of the 12 was said to have remained resolute about the sack plan.

The process to remove Bilal, which was started last week by the aggrieved executive members who reportedly suspect his loyalty, is seen as the fallout of the party’s gubernatorial primary in the state, following which at least one or two of the aspirants who lost out are still hoping that there would be a re-run.

Pioneer chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission  (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu who came next to the winner, Aishatu Ahmed Binani, has gone to court to challenge Binani’s victory and asked for an order for a rerun primary.

The aggrieved state executives are said to be motivated by the idea to have Bilal out of the way in event of a rerun, but it was reliably gathered at the weekend that Bilal has largely warded off his removal plan by getting almost all the ring leaders behind the plot to shelve their plans.

The ‘one man standing’ among the anti-Bilal plot is believed to be the party’s state Organising Secretary, Mustapha Ribadu, a nephew of Nuhu Ribadu.

Mustapha Ribadu, in response to the development, denied knowledge of it.

When the move to remove Bilal started last week, those behind it alleged gross misconducts against him.

Niger civil servants condemn invasion of secretariat by hoodlums

The invasion of the national secretariat of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria by hoodlums led by a former national president, Bola Audu Innocent has continued to generate condemnation from members of the association.

The Niger State chapter and branch of the association said the attack was a move by a drowning man, warning Audu that he and his cohorts would be held responsible if any staff of the union at Lagos or Abuja is harmed in any way.

It was learnt that Audu, who was elected as the national president of the association some few years ago was made to step aside in March last year by the National Executive Council after he was arrested in Abuja by NAPTIP for alleged trafficking in persons and exploitation of vulnerable persons.

The embattled president was said to have indulged in all manners of unconventional breaches which forced the association to expel him from the union after an emergency NEC meeting in August 2021 but this has not gone down well with him.

In a statement issued by the Chairmen of the Niger chapter and Minna branch of the Association, Comrade Ibrahim Gana and Comrade Garba Salihu Kontagora and the Secretary, Comrade Friday Imiruay, the union regretted that Audu has resorted to thuggery and extra-judicial means in his bid to return to power.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the association of senior civil servants of Nigeria is made up of the cream of educated, knowledgeable and civilised members in the public service of the federal and 36 states of the federation.

“Given the above, the Niger State branch/chapter of the association, therefore, warns Bola Audu and his gang to stay clear of the National Secretariat in Lagos and Abuja to enable the association to continue to pursue its statutory responsibility of protecting and safeguarding the interest of its teeming members across the federation as it has been doing over the decades.”
