Fed Govt seeks increased advocacy for better PHC delivery

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire yesterday urged the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, and other traditional leaders in the Southwest to increase advocacy for improved primary health care (PHC) delivery.

He stated that while the government’s investment in tertiary health care is good, it should not be at the detriment of primary health care centres which are the closest to the people, especially in the treatment of childhood diseases, administration of routine immunisation, and the provision of other lifesaving healthcare services.

During the maiden quarterly review meeting of the Southwest Traditional Leaders’ Committee on PHC delivery, which was chaired by the Ooni of Ife, the minister said: “I look forward to this Committee intensifying our community mobilisation efforts and advocating to our political leaders at all levels the unquantifiable benefits of investing in the health sector, particularly in primary health care, which is the closest to the people.

“I believe that working together will fast-track the achievement of our regional and national targets in routine immunisation, COVID-19 vaccination, polio eradication, and maternal and child health.”

The Ooni said: “We (traditional leaders) are the closest to our people. We don’t need to wait for the Federal Government, state and local governments for us to help our people.

The Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Faisal Shuaib said: “Nigeria is one of the countries that witnessed an increase in routine immunisation despite the COVID-19 pandemic. To make progress in primary health care services, we need your advocacy to the governance to improve the number of health workers in PHCs because only 30 per cent of PHCs have the right mix of human resources.”

Adedoja, who spoke in Ogoja, Cross River State, noted that “skill-based curriculum in schools had become the trend in the 21st Century knowledge economy, as the high rate of employable graduates from our educational system has become a great burden and concern to stakeholders in the economic and educational sectors, and therefore needs to be addressed urgently.”

In a statement in Abuja, he added that the TCTI, Biase, the initiative of the Cross River State Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade had made the re-skilling of teachers of vocational and technical education a top priority in its retraining programme.

According to him, other subject teachers must also undergo re-skilling for child-centred skill acquisition rather than emphasis being placed on curriculum-based learning.

Adedoja also spoke at the workshop for head teachers of public and private secondary schools in Cross River State which took place in three centres in the senatorial districts of the state: Biase, Ikom and Ogoja.and attended by 965 Principals and Vice Principals of public and private secondary Schools in Cross Rivers State.

The Chairman of Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Senator Dr Steven Odey re-assured the institute that Cross River State SUBEB and TCTI, Biase are natural partners in teacher development.

During the phase three of the workshop held on Saturday in Ogoja, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Gregory Olayi commended the efforts of the pioneer Director-General TCTI, Biase, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja and supported the need for continuous re-training of teachers.

He emphasised that “the retraining should be borne by the government and not by the teachers or head teachers, in view of the poor remuneration for the teaching profession in the country, which ought to be addressed.”

While stating that children can now take the rotavirus vaccine at 6, 10 and 14 weeks as they take other life-saving vaccines, it noted that the vaccine is of great importance because it is expected to avert over 110,000 deaths of children under the age of five in the next 10 years.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, Dr Walter Mulombo said: “The introduction of the Rotavirus Vaccine provides the opportunity to reduce the number of children dying every day from diarrhoea disease caused by rotavirus. ‘Kano meets Islamic Development Bank’s expectations’

The Vice-President of the Islamic Development Bank Dr Mansur Mukhtar has praised the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) for meeting the expectations of the Islamic Bank, which is the sponsor of KSADP, whose objective is to reduce poverty by strengthening food security in the land.

Mukhtar gave the commendation when he visited the office of Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project in Kano City.

He said his unscheduled visit, which was his first to the project office, was to enable him to familiarise with its activities, which focus on improving crop production and enhancing livestock productivity in Kano State.

Funded by the Islamic Development Bank and the Lives and Livelihood Funds (LLF), the KSADP’s overall objective is to contribute to reduction of poverty and strengthening food and nutrition security in the state.

“This will be achieved by developing agro-pastoral production systems and targeting mainly smallholder farmers and pastoralists as well as crucial actors in the value chain of agro-pastoralism. These include agricultural produce processors, marketers, input suppliers, and financial institutions,” Mukhtar said.

The Vice-President said: “The bank has been monitoring your (Kano’s) performance and your example has been showcased a number of times during our meetings with the LLF.

“I am surprised that the Project Management Unit is working almost full house. I am impressed that you are working very hard to meet the bank’s expectations.

“I am here to see how you work. I’m pleased that you are taking your work seriously. From the reports we have received so far, your project is moving on well.”

While urging the project management unit to maintain the work culture, Dr Mukhtar assured them of the bank’s determination to address their challenges, if any, to ensure the project’s continuous success.

Project Coordinator of Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project, Ibrahim Garba Muhammad said the visit would give impetus to drive the project.

In a statement by the Project Communication Specialist, Ameen Yassar Muhammad added that the “Kano project is making steady progress to impact the lives of farmers and pastoralists in the state, in line with the IsDB/LLF theory of change.”

The coordinator said he was, however, concerned that inflation is affecting the awards of projects’ contract, adding that this and the issue of co-financing needed to be addressed by the bank, so as not to impede the pace of the overall project delivery.

He said people from 38 local government areas of the state benefited from the gesture free.

He said the CARES project would provide assistance for poultry and small farmers, and popcorn machines to youths in the remaining six metropolitan areas of the state in the next few weeks.

“We expended between N900 million and N1 billion on these components of the projects in the last six months that we started the programme,” he said.

Halilu said the project had spent not less than N300 million on farm inputs alone, while about 980 poor farmers so far had benefited.

“The amount was spent on power tillers, planters, insecticides, herbicides, fertilisers, solar-powered water pumping machines, and improved seeds, among others,”

“This one doesn’t require fuel; it only needs sunlight to operate and it is environment-friendly as it doesn’t pollute the farm and aquatic lives,” he said.

Datti stated that the machine had the capacity to pump at least 24,000 litres of water in one hour.
