GIZ trains 5,651 Plateau students in entrepreneurship skills

In a bid to ensure mass skill acquisition for young Nigerians, the GIZ Students Entrepreneurship Activities Hub (SEA-Hub) said over 5,651 students from Plateau State have been captured in this year’s activities of the SEA-Hub.

The Head of Policy Components of GIZ Omoware Akinropo stated this during the Plateau State Sea-Hub exhibition and competition 2022 held in Jos, Plateau State.

According to Akinropo, Sea-Hub has reached over 5, 651 students from 84 schools across the 17 local government areas of the state, adding that 10 states and 64 local government areas have been covered across the active states.

He said: “With the ongoing mass skills acquisition training in the state, young Nigerians of school age are already being equipped with relevant skills that will make them self-employed after graduating from school.

“This will help curb the employment crisis in the country where young Nigerian graduates roam the streets in search of jobs that are not there.

“The objective of the students’ entrepreneurship activities is to make them not only self-employed but also to become employers of labour.

“We took the entrepreneurship programme to secondary schools so as to catch them young and inculcate in them the spirit of self-sufficiency by relying on their skills.

“From the young stage, these students are already prepared with the skills to run a successful business and to understand innovation, risk-taking, and critical thinking and, in the long-run, have a secure economic future for the youth and the country.”

He stated that the entrepreneurship programme has been inaugurated in 330 schools across Nigeria and has captured over 30,000 students from 11 states in Nigeria.”

Akinropo explained that over 28,000 secondary school students have been reached as over 60 per cent are females, while 700 teachers have been impacted directly or indirectly with a number of them running their businesses, with over 300 SEA-Hub graduates running their personal businesses.

The exhibition and competition are to sustain the commitments of the various schools and to examine the interest and commitment of the students and teachers in the training programme.

  • How a tenant embarrassed me in Abuja, by Ishaku

How a tenant embarrassed me in Abuja, by Ishaku

Taraba State Governor Darius Ishaku yesterday narrated how he was embarrassed by a defaulting tenant of a Taraba property in Abuja even as the court insisted the tenant should remain in the property in “perpetuity”.

Ishaku spoke during the swearing-in of three judges of the State Shariah Court of Appeal and Customary Court of Appeal in Jalingo.

Those who took oaths of allegiance before the governor were the Grand Khadi, Shariah Court of Appeal, Shuaibu Dahiru Ahmad, Khadi designate, Salau Ismaila Madugu and the Judge, Customary Court of Appeal, Bulus Nyiputen.

Alluding to the sorry state of the judiciary in the country, Ishaku said he was embarrassed and disappointed by the behaviour of the tenant and the action of the judiciary.

“Last week I was embarrassed in Abuja. Somebody rented the State Government House in 2014 for four years and paid two years and we went to court, the rent was N80 million. It was reduced to N40 million. He paid for two years and didn’t pay for the balance.

“When I resumed, I felt the state was being cheated and I said ‘okay, since you have entered an agreement for four years, let us allow you to stay for four years but we are not going to renew the rent.’ And the tenant went on to stay there; not only that, he demolished and renovated the building into a hotel.

“We went to court and went to the extent of calling this fellow, that I would want to see him. He met me at the airport in Abuja. I thought he was a gentleman. I said ‘please, this is our building, vacate it because we want to return it to its status quo.’ He told me he was going to live there until when he likes. I thought it was a joke, I laughed and walked away.

“Now, just last week, making it seven years, making him stay for five years for free and the judge gave a judgment saying that he should stay there in perpetuity,” Ishaku said.

According to him. the judgment was neither “fair” nor “sincere”.

“You don’t need to be a lawyer to know that some judgments are entirely rubbish. I am saying this because you Tarabans, sometimes there are a lot of things that we take here that you don’t know. But some of them we have to expose them,” Ishaku added.

He added that the construction of more courts, fixing of dilapidated structures and hiring more judges would help bring justice closer to the people.

He said the judges were appointed based on recommendations of the Judicial Service Commission and encouraged them to follow the footsteps of those that had made Taraba great in the judiciary.

“We feel like our women in the film industry have been disadvantaged for far too long; we have been relegated to keep struggling to only thrive as actresses, or at best as makeup artists or the caterers cooking food on set, or more recently as Production Managers.

“But for us, we believe that women can begin to take those technical aspects of filmmaking – handling the camera, recording the sound, lighting the set or even creating the design for the set of various film productions.”

According to the Head of Cooperation and Cultural Affairs at the French Embassy, Rafael Pont, “The promotion of girls and women’s rights is one of the priorities of the French Government.

“Here in Nigeria, we are very proud to support Civil Society Organisations which are promoting those rights through training programmes and is specific to Girls Voices Initiative.
