We’ll flush out bandits, informants, Tambuwal assures

Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal has warned marauders and their collaborators to stay clear of the State or face the full wrath of the law once apprehended.

Tambuwal, who cut short an official trip midnight Tuesday to address the reported influx of suspected bandits and their informants into the village of Sabon Garin Liman in Wurno local government area, said his administration, with the assistance of security agencies and the Federal Government, will not allow criminals to roll back the gains being made to stem the tide of their nefarious activities.

He said the State Government was not unaware “of what is happening in this village, where bandits, both from within and outside the country are taking refuge.

“I was out of the state. I left Sokoto yesterday. I had to come back by 1 am last night because of certain information that I received that are very worrisome and of concern, that have to do with happenings around here and Gundumi forest (in Zamfara state).

“We know that there are informants in this village and they collaborate with bandits. We are going to flush them out and make sure that the law takes its course on them,” he reaffirmed.

He appealed to the law abiding people in the community to collaborate with the village head, other leaders and security agencies “particularly those deployed around this area so that we can nip this in the bud and reestablish peace here and in the state in general.”

He commiserated with the people of the community “on what has been happening around here, especially the recent attacks.”

Referring to what happened in Kebbi State where bandits killed over 60 vigilante men on Sunday evening, the Governor said: “We don’t want such happenings. We must all work together to ensure that the progress being recorded so far is not retarded.

“We pray that God Almighty shall continue to forgive the souls of those who lost their lives; and grant complete healings to those who sustained injuries and wounds, and all of these.”

The Governor was accompanied during the visit by heads of security agencies, Commissioner of Security and Career Affairs and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mallam Saidu Umar.

Also with the Governor were the Chairmen of Goronyo, Rabah and Wurno local government areas.

Phoung Nguyen, UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office, Maiduguri, stated this in a statement by its Comminication Officer, Folashade Adebayo, yesterday in Maiduguri.

Nguyen listed items donated to include antimalarials, analgesics, antibiotics and equipment.

According to him, the UN agency will provide additional 500,000 dollars to support the implementation of the Primary Health care Memorandum of Understanding it signed with the states.

Nguyen noted that women and children had paid the highest cost of the 13-year-old conflict in the region.

“In 2020, the lives of 170 children lost directly or indirectly each day due to reduced access to health care services.

“We are laying the foundation for optimum well-being for thousands of children born and yet to be born.

“With this intervention, expectant mothers in Yobe and Borno states will be able to access health facilities in their communities, and receive essential drugs, tests and basic medical support in primary health care facilities close to their homes,” he said.

Kaduna inaugurates committee on local emergency

The Kaduna State Government has inaugurated Local Emergency Committees (LEMC) to manage disasters across the 23 local government areas of the state.

Inaugurating the committee in Kaduna yesterday, Governor Nasir El-Rufai said it would mitigate emergencies through actions that would reduce exposure to hazardous events.

He said this would be achieved through educating owners of business outfits and members of public on simple measures they could take to reduce losses and injuries in times of disasters.

Represented by the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development Hafsat Baba, he explained that the LEMCs would prepare the communities to be ready to face emerging threats that had not been mitigated.

“I hope that inaugurating the LEMCs will increase response to disaster management, and aid risk reduction through early warning and early response,” he explained.

The Executive Secretary, Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) Muhammed Mukaddas, said the LEMCs are strategically structured to strengthen communities to take ownership of their disaster management systems.

He said local communities were the weakest link in disaster management.

Mukaddas said the agency and its non-governmental partners would embark on series of advocacy visits, trainings, simulations and other strategies aimed at achieving community participation in disaster management.

Temilola Fashola, the Country Director, Christian Aid, said the role communities played were central to ensuring effective disaster management, adding that without a structured LEMC, progress could not be achieved.

He said inauguration of the LEMC was an attestation of commitment of the state government to ensuring the effectiveness of disaster management.

‘Protect dignity of SGBV survivors in your reporting’

Stakeholders in the gender violence space have urged journalists to be conscious of the humanity, dignity and mental health of the survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) while reporting such issues.

They urged the media to ensure that they are careful not to denigrate the dignity of the survivors.

While addressing journalists in Abuja during a workshop organised by the BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights, the Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria Osai Ojigho, urged media practitioners to ensure that they do not contribute to secondary trauma, assault and unnecessary exposure of the survivors of SGBV.

While noting that religion, culture, and the inability of lawmakers to fully comprehend sexual and gender violence issues were some of the reasons the National Assembly turned down the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, she urged the lawmakers to recognise and respect women’s rights.

“It is a great injustice for the National Assembly to turn down the bill. We must ensure that gender equality is something that is recognised, not just in our laws but also in our constitution,” she said.

The Executive Director of BAOBAB for Women’s Human Rights, Mrs Bunmi Dipo-Salami said: “We want to break the bias in the media representation of women in reporting sexual violence and re-victimisation of survivors of Sexual and Gender-based Violence (SGBV) by the media.”

The Director of the MacArthur Foundation Africa Office in Abuja, Dr Kole Shettima, added: “We should not perpetuate our own biases as facts while reporting issues.

“As we talk of SGBV, we  must be conscious of reporting about poor women whose voices are not usually heard, and who face these issues more. We must give voice and justice to the voiceless and victims of injustice.”

  • Minister urges ITF, others to tackle unemployment

Minister urges ITF, others to tackle unemployment

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Otunba Richard Adeniyi has urged the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and other sister agencies to show more commitment to the training and retraining of Nigerians, especially youths so as to bridge the gap of unemployment in the country.

He also advised them to strive to grow the national economy and resolve other challenges that are currently confronting the country through performing their constitutional duties.

According to the minister, the need to urgently address the rising tide of unemployment and poverty in the country is of great concern to the Federal Government, adding that it is in this regard that the Federal Government recently unveiled several initiatives, including the National Development Plan (NDP), 2021-2025.

Otunba Adeniyi stated this at the end-of-the-year performance review for 2021 with the theme “Actualising the ITF Mandate in a VUCA World” in Jos yesterday.

He pointed out that the government believes that for these programmes to be fully achieved, organisations such as the ITF have a vital role to play, especially in the area of human capital development.

However, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the ITF Mr. Joseph Ari said over N1.195 billion was paid last year as students’ industrial works experience scheme as SIWES students  supervisory allowances.

According to the D-G, a breakdown of this figure shows that over N961 million  was paid to 64, 124 university undergraduates while over N162 million was paid to 16, 292 Polytechnic students and the sum of over N71 million was paid to 7,121 students of colleges of education.

He assured Nigerians of the fund’s continuous commitment to promote payment of students’ and supervisors’ allowances as soon as money is received from the Federal Government.

Ari also commended the National Assembly for the bold step taken to commence legislative processes for the inclusion of Technical and Vocational Education Training in Nigeria school curricular.

According to him, the step was a right move as it will expose Nigerians to hands-on skills at an early age and thereby eliminate existing prejudices against TVET and the perception of technical skills as a preserve for some classes of our society.

Ari also explained that, he is pleased to note that stakeholders are steadily keying into their advocacy for emphasis on skills acquisition as a vehicle and veritable tool for poverty reduction, job creation and overall national growth.

He pointed out that this review meeting is an opportunity for them to reflect on their performances in 2021 to come up with firm strategies to build on last year’s, achievements and draw up programmes of action for 2022 bearing in mind the challenges of COVID-19.

Other factors the D-G said is prevailing government policies/programmes, the political environment and the VUCA world that is replete with a rapid rate of change and the multiplicity of decision factors to which there are no definite answers.

The ITF boss also argued that the fund has performed commendably in all facets of their activities and programmes stressing that for them to live up to the vision of being the foremost skills training development Organisation in Nigeria and one of the best in the world.

In his words: “We shall continue to search for new ways of doing things that will engender growth and greater results that is the true meaning of ideation and innovation.”

He challenged members of staff of the need to change their attitude to work, noting that management appreciates that cases of indiscipline, absenteeism and irregularity at work has greatly reduce in recent years but was quick to add that there is room for improvement.

Ari also commended stakeholders such as state governments, the organised private sector, NGOs that have collaborated with ITF to equip Nigerians with skills for employability and entrepreneurship.

  • Lawmakers urged to expedite work on women-friendly bills

Lawmakers urged to expedite work on women-friendly bills

Federal lawmakers have been urged to expedite work on all women-friendly bills before the National Assembly.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) made the call in a statement to mark this year’s International Women’s Day in Abuja.

While re-emphasising its call to end all forms of gender-based violence, the CUPP also charged the lawmakers to further enlarge the space for public participation of women in the economic and socio-political aspects of the nation’s daily life.

Spokesman of CUPP, Ikenga Ugochukwu, expressed sadness over the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led National Assembly leadership to slap women a few days to international women’s day celebrations by rejecting bills that would have opened the political space for more women participation.

While congratulating our dear women – mothers, wives, daughters and sisters and expressed solidarity with their aspirations and global expectations, Ugochukwu said that the leader of the opposition family, Iyorcha Ayu is pained by “this parliamentary decision and have since commenced action towards mobilising our lawmakers on how best to deal with the challenges posed by the rejection of the bill.”

He said that International Women’s Day “is another opportunity to reflect on how far we have come as a people in giving our women the pride of place in our society, in conformity with relevant best practices.”

The statement added: “It is an occasion to reaffirm our support for implementable affirmative actions for our women and to further re-emphasise our firm resolve to end all forms of Gender-Based Violence within our powers.

“We, therefore, join all men of goodwill across the world to celebrate our immensely resourceful and industrious women, while calling on all Parliaments to favourably expedite work on all women-friendly bills before them, to further enlarge the space for public participation of our women in the economic and socio-political aspects of our daily life.”

He, however, said that the opposition is also working hard to create more participation platforms for women internationally.
