National Convention: APC stakeholders reject February date

Some stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) have rejected the proposed February 26 date for the party’s national convention.

The group, under the auspices of APC Youth Development and Solidarity Forum, said the ruling party could potentially disintegrate should it proceed with the convention.

The APC stakeholders made their position known yesterday in Abuja.

According to the Secretary-General of the group Tobias Ogbeh, some party faithful have been working with foreign agents to destabilise the party at the convention.

He noted that the plan is to run a parallel secretariat and institute legal cases against the party to ensure that it doesn’t produce any candidate in 2023.

Ogbeh added that if not properly managed, this could ultimately lead to a mass exodus of party members over unresolved and lingering legal issues.

The APC stakeholders, therefore, urged the party leadership to announce another date for the convention to save it from being hijacked by some vested interests that do not wish the party well.

If this is done, they, however, assured that the APC will remain united and all those scheming to undermine the party would be put to shame.

Coalition to Buhari: save the soul of Kebbi APC

A coalition of Youth and Students Organisations in Kebbi State (CYSOKS) has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to save the soul of the Kebbi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress from the alleged “high-handedness and impunity of the state government.”

The coalition accused the state government of shortchanging the students by denying them scholarships as and when due while at the same time not investing in education as per the demand and peculiarities of the state in present times.

“This is not surprising as verified records have shown that from 1999-date, the current administration is the worst in terms of capital project execution, youth empowerment, accountability and mismanagement of the scarce resources of Kebbi State people.

“This is also in addition to the inability and lack of visible commitment of the Bagudu-led administration in the security of lives and properties of the citizens, evident in the manner the government mishandled the issue of the kidnapping of the FGC Yauri students and other related security incidents across the state, Secretary of the coalition, Comrade Muhammad Muhammad said in a statement in Abuja.

The coalition said it has resolved to “take side with the people, especially now that the political class under the leadership of Senator Adamu Aliero, the Senate Leader Senator Yahaya Abdullahi (Mallamawan Kabi) has made a resolution to rescue the party from the grip of the governor and his anointed lackeys.”

It added: “However, our role is to be part of this movement by playing our role as one of the most displeased groups in bringing on board a people-oriented leadership that has the will, tenacity and capacity to turn around things for the betterment of the good people of Kebbi State.”

Ortom unveils Benue humanitarian response plan

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has unveiled the Benue State Humanitarian Response Plan (BSHRP) for 2022.

Performing the ceremony at the New Banquet Hall of the Government House Makurdi, Governor Ortom lamented the continued stay of over 1.5 million people, mostly peasant farmers in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

He stated that his administration is working hard to ensure that the IDPs in various camps across the state are resettled back to their homes, stressing that the security situation has compelled the displaced people to remain in the camps.

He said: “It is the security situation that has kept the IDPs in the camps till now. Those who attempted going back to their homes were attacked and killed,” the governor stated.

He continued: “I don’t desire that anyone should be in the camps. I have interacted with them and nobody wants to be in those camps. It is worrisome for a state such as Benue which is agrarian and supported by the civil service to have over 1.5 million Internally Displaced Persons. Farming activities have been brought to a halt.”

The Chairman, Document Drafting Committee, Prof. Magdalyne Dura disclosed that on June 17, last year, Governor Ortom set up a multi-sectoral technical committee to work on a Humanitarian Response Plan for Benue State.

“Currently, we are happy that the assignment given to us has been successfully concluded as evidenced in the readiness of the Benue State Humanitarian Response Plan (BSHRP) for public presentation.

“The dire humanitarian situation in the state is further compounded by the influx of Cameroonian refugees who were escaping from the conflict in their country into Kwande Local Government Area. The IDPs have had their livelihoods destroyed and are in need of protection, food, shelter and medical assistance,” she said.

Masari inaugurates Sharia Appeal Court Judge

Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari yesterday inaugurated a new Kadi for the State Sharia Court of Appeal at the Council Chambers, Government House, Katsina.

Masari described the event as another milestone in the advancement of the state judiciary.

He said: “Recall the concern raised by the government on the attitude of blame-shifting by the justice sector actors on undue delays and unjustifiable release of suspected bandits, kidnappers and rapists.

“The committee has come up with a coordinated approach in ensuring that suspects with prima-facie records of crimes are not unduly released on bail under the guise of enforcement of fundamental rights while the lives of many are under threat by these lawless individuals.

“As I have mentioned a number of times that the security challenges containment order, I issued earlier, is a child of necessity. It was never intended to bring hardship to citizens but rather aimed at addressing the lingering security challenges.”

While describing the newly appointed Kadi as an individual with track record of professionalism, dedication and integrity as confirmed through the rigorous, competitive and painstaking screening process that led to his appointment, he urged the Kadi to consider his appointment as a call to duty that requires more dedication.
