The kind of president Nigerians want in 2023, by API

Majority of Nigerians want a competent, God-fearing and kind-hearted president who will tackle current challenges facing the nation, a poll by the Africa Polling Institute (API) has revealed.

The respondents also demanded for a credible election, where their votes will count, and they can cast those votes without fear or intimidation.

According to the organisation, a poll conducted in 2021 indicated some qualities that Nigerians expect in the next leader of the country, but basically they demanded for a credible and acceptable electoral process in which political leaders would emerge.

Executive Director, Africa Polling Institute (API), Prof Bell Ihua, stated these while unveiling the poll result on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said: “Incidentally, I ran a poll along this line last year and there are some qualities that Nigerians would be looking for in the next leader of the country. To start with, Nigerians want a credible election, where their votes will count, and they can cast those votes without fear or intimidation.

“Nigerians want a credible and competent leader, who is God-fearing, kind hearted, and can tackle insecurity head-on. These were the top qualities I can remember. In other words, Nigerians are looking for a leader who knows that we can be much better than we are today as a country, and is willing to work with his or her team to lay the vision to make this country great again; one that every citizen would be proud of and glad to contribute their quota to her development.”

Speaking on religion and ethnicity, he said, “Religion and ethnicity have become intertwined into our politics.”

He however said this is no cause for despair, “as credible and competent candidates can be found from across the major religious affiliations and ethnic groupings in the country.”

  • 2022 Budget: Plateau to spend N100m to furnish Lalong’s guest house

2022 Budget: Plateau to spend N100m to furnish Lalong’s guest house

The Plateau State Government is to spend a whopping N100m to furnish the Simon Lalong Guest House, while Speaker of the State House of Assembly and his deputy’s residents will gulp N700m, as against the sum of N88,000,000.00 only budgeted to run the affairs of the State Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Hospitality; a ministry with the potential to generate high IGR for the State.

This is even as conflicting figures are quoted as the amount budgeted for the construction of the British American junction flyover and dualisation to Lamingo junction roundabout.

The State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Sylvester Wallangko, who spoke during the 2022 Budget breakdown on Friday, explained the reasons for the disparities.

Wallangko, who earlier reviewed the budget performance in 2021, stated that the government is optimistic that the 2022 budget is not over-ambitious, as there is an over N40bn reduction from last year’s.

Giving details, he said among other things, “… Tourism, Culture, and Hospitality, the sum of N88,000,000.00 only, representing 0.24 percent of the total capital estimate is allocated to this subsector for its various projects. For Administration, the Rescue Administration has committed the sum of N7,687,193,830.50, only representing 21.36 percent of the capital estimate.

“Among other projects and programmes considered in the budget include the following: Building and furnishing protocol lodge at International Airport, Heipang, N60,000,000.00; Furnishing of Simon Bako Lalong guest house, N100,000,000.00…”

On the flyover, which has been a subject of controversy in the State between the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Wallangko explained that the Ministry of Works and Transport has been allocated “the sum of N9,357,030,000.00 only, representing 26.00% of the capital.

“This is to enable the sector finance capital projects, especially the ongoing projects in the State. Some of the projects considered in the budget include amongst others the construction of Kwande-Shimankar Moekat Mato road, N350,000,000.00; British American junction flyover and dualisation to Lamingo junction roundabout, N6,000,000,000.00…”

On the disparity with the earlier figure of N18bn which sparked controversy between the two political parties, he said, “I don’t know who gave the figure of N18bn; this flyover started in 2021 and we made provision for about N2bn. In 2022, what is going to be spent is N6bn because all that is supposed to be spent is N9bn on the overhead. If we make provision for N6bn and somebody said N18bn, possibly they should tell us where they will get the remaining funding from.”

He said the State Government has allocated N9.3bn for Works and Transport; Health, N3.5bn, Education N3.5bn, Agriculture, N2.5bn, while the Tourism sector got the lowest allocation of N8m for the year.

He said the budget has an estimated size of N106,807,267,642.00) only, comprising N79,198,475,222.12 as current revenue and N196,807,267,642.00 as recurrent expenditure.
