NGO builds farmer-herder harmony in Adamawa, hands over peace structures

A non-governmental organisation that has recently been fostering harmony between farmers and herders in Adamawa State has officially handed over the various peace channels it has created.

The NGO, Search for Common Ground (SFCG), handed over the peace structures to the government at both the state and local council levels to sustain peace between farmers and herders as the NGO approaches the end of the peace project in the state.

SFCG has been implementing Phase 2 of the peace project since January 2024, titled Contributing to the Mitigation of Conflicts over Natural Resources between Farmers and Herder Communities in Adamawa and Taraba States (COMITAS II).

As the project officially ends on the 15th of this month, SFCG held its close-out event in Yola to encourage the relevant authorities to take ownership of the peace structures created over the months for continued peacebuilding.

The structures are the Adamawa Forum for Farmer-Herder Relations (AFFAHR), Peace Architecture Dialogue (PAD), Community Security Architecture Dialogue (CSAD), Community Response Network (CRN), Common Ground Journalists Network, and Media Fellows.

The structures serve primarily in seven local government areas of Adamawa State that have been the focus of the project: Lamurde, Numan, Demsa, Girei, Shelleng, Guyuk, and Mayo-Belwa.

During the project close-out ceremony in Yola, the Country Director of SFCG, Fatima Abubakar Madaki, stated that the COMITAS Project has been successful in addressing the issues of competition for resources that often cause friction between farmers and herders.

“Your Excellency, we hope that the structures we are handing over will be maintained,” she told Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who was represented on the occasion by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Amos Edgar.

The governor congratulated Search for Common Ground for its dedication to peacebuilding.

  • Senator Usman blasts Kaduna elders forum over recall demand

Senator Usman blasts Kaduna elders forum over recall demand

…says ‘I’m too busy with legislative duties, no time for frivolities’

The Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Lawal Adamu Usman, has criticised the Kaduna Elders Forum (KEF) for calling for his recall from the National Assembly, citing alleged non-performance.

Popularly known as Senator LA, Usman accused the KEF of hiding under the guise of different groups to renew its “baseless recall threats,” just months after a similar attempt.

In a statement titled “Kaduna Elders’ Forum’s Infantile Outbursts: Empty Barrel Making Most Noise,” the Senator dismissed the group’s claims, describing them as the actions of “meddlesome interlopers” undeserving of serious attention.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Education (Basic and Secondary) and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Financial Matters, Senator Usman emphasised his focus on critical national responsibilities.

He said he would not engage with individuals pursuing selfish political interests under the guise of public concerns.

He further accused the group and its sponsors of spreading misinformation and fabricating lies about his performance.

Senator LA highlighted his “unprecedented achievements” over the past 18 months, which he claimed are tangible and visible to all.

He urged the group to educate itself on relevant issues instead of engaging in what he described as “childish tantrums.”

He accused the group and its sponsors of engaging in “childish tantrums”, urging them to seek proper understanding of his performance.

He condemned their efforts to deliberately misinform the public and spread blatant lies about his achievements, which he described as tangible and visible to all within his 18 months in office.

The Senator questioned the outcome of an earlier recall threat issued last year under the guise of the Kaduna Peace and Tranquility Forum (KPTF). He labeled the rehash of the same threat by the same individuals under a new name as both laughable and suspicious.

Urging the people of Kaduna Central Senatorial District to ignore the group’s claims, Senator Usman accused the “so-called Kaduna elders” of lacking the moral authority to act in the public’s interest. He alleged that their actions were solely to advance the selfish agendas of their sponsors and paymasters.

The lawmaker encouraged his constituents to remain calm and disregard the KEF’s provocative statements, treating the recall threats with the contempt they deserved.

It read in part: “Specifically, Senator LA has recorded unprecedented achievements in the past 18 months by providing among many others 100 smart primary school buildings, scholarships, boreholes for potable water, solar lights, entrepreneurial training for farmers, sponsorship of hundreds of students for WAEC and UTME (JAMB) examinations, N500,000 each as business startup capital given to no fewer than 500 beneficiaries, payment of the registration fee for 1000 tertiary institutions students, training for 100 women in soap making with startup capital and training of 200 beneficiaries in fish farming with startup capital. Interestingly, beneficiaries of all these laudable projects are drawn from all the seven local government areas making up his Kaduna Central Senatorial District constituency.

“His motion urging the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite the ongoing reconstruction of the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano expressway has remained a reference point in the Senate, having secured the unanimous approval of all the lawmakers in the upper legislative chamber.

“In all, in the past 18 months, Senator LA has sponsored four very crucial motions and four bills, which are now in their third reading stages and about to be passed into law by the Senate. Infact, it’s crystal clear that if there’s any lawmaker that should be tarred with the brush of non-performance by the so-called Kaduna elders, it shouldn’t be the indefatigable Senator LA, who has been up and doing since his election,” the statement read.

He said that the community members were alleged to have shot the visiting villagers with bow and arrows, injuring four persons.

According to him, in retaliation, the villagers from Gululu later mobilized, attacked and set ablaze Fulani settlements in both Miga and Jahun LGAs.

“On 03/01/2025, information from Gululu village in Miga LGA indicated that a group of miscreants suspected to be Fulanis broke into a shop and stole a quantity of hibiscus flower and other provisions.

“A team of villagers (Hausawa) traced their footprints to a Fulani settlement Camp in Yankunama village, Jahun LGA.

“On sighting the villagers, the Fulanis started shooting the villagers with bow and arrows and as a result, four persons were seriously injured.

“The villagers mobilized and started attacking the Fulanis and setting their houses ablaze at various locations within Miga and Jahun LGAs,” Shiisu said.

  • Borno govt subsidises fuel to 5,000 farmers at N600 per litre

Borno govt subsidises fuel to 5,000 farmers at N600 per litre

The Borno State Government has announced plans to subsidise fuel at N600 per litre to 5,000 farmers in communities hit by Boko Haram insurgents in the state.

Governor Babagana Zulum announced this during the flag-off of distribution of farm inputs to prospective farmers resettled by his administration in Bama and environs on Friday night.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bama was among the areas overrun by Boko Haram insurgents in 2014, but was liberated by the Nigerian military in March 2015.

The governor was on a two-day tour of the local government Area to facilitate the resettlement of people displaced from Bama and environs due to insurgency.

Zulum had earlier visited Abbaram town, a village located in the Eastern part of Kur Mohammed military barracks where his administration plans to construct 1,000 shelters for the returnees.

He also visited Darajamal to assess the destruction caused by Boko Haram insurgents there.

Speaking after the visitation, the governor said that one of the major challenges facing irrigation farmers in the area was the rising cost of petrol.

“As a result, I want to announce to the general public that the state government will procure petroleum products and sell to the farmers at a subsidised rate.

“Currently petrol is being sold in Maiduguri at N1,200 per litre, but inshaa Allah (God willing), henceforth for irrigation farmers this season, a litre of petrol will be sold at N600.

“The Commissioner for Agriculture will work with the Brigade Commander to ensure the delivery of the petroleum products to farmers in Bama town as soon as possible,” Zulum said.

According to him, the planned fuel subsidy was designed to cushion the effects of high cost of farming activities.

He said there was the need to support the vulnerable in an effort to fully reintegrate them into the society without any form of discrimination.

The governor also gave 2,000 bags of NPK fertiliser, 1,000 units of water pumps, and 620 units of gasoline pumps to the farmers for free.

The governor also distributed 380 units of solar water pumps, 1,000 units of sprayers, 800 rolls of 2-inch flexible hose, and 1,000 litres of pesticide and seedlings to the farmers.

He said that the incentives would propel Agricultural productivity and prepare the farmers to be employers of labour in the near future.

Earlier, the Shehu of Bama, Dr Umar Elkanemi, thanked the governor for the love and care he has been showing to the people of Bama in particular and the Borno people in general.

He assured the governor that his laudable investments in Bama and the surrounding communities would not be in vain.

Zulum was accompanied by the Senator representing Borno Central, Sen. Kaka Lawan, and members of the House of Representatives from the area.

  • We will mobilise 50m Nigerians to rescue the North – NSYEI

We will mobilise 50m Nigerians to rescue the North – NSYEI

The Northern Star Youth Empowerment Initiative (NSYEI) has announced plans to mobilize 50 million Nigerians as part of efforts to address the challenges facing the northern region.

The Director General of the initiative, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, disclosed this during a high-level meeting in Kaduna aimed at rallying support across the northern states.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Dr. Idris highlighted the pressing issues facing the North, including poverty, insecurity, and underdevelopment, stating that the region has fallen behind in all indices of progress.

“We are the poverty capital of the world. Our region is plagued by multidimensional poverty, out-of-school children, deteriorating infrastructure, and insecurity. You can hardly travel from one state to another without fear. Kidnappings and killings have become commonplace, with entire communities being wiped out. Yet, there is no strong voice advocating for us,” Dr. Idris lamented.

On empowering youth for leadership, Dr. Idris emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, noting that young people in the North are in a “sorry state.”

The movement aims to prepare the youth for leadership roles while providing them with the necessary guidance, skills, and opportunities to drive change.

“This movement was birthed by well-meaning individuals like former Sokoto State Governor Attahiru Bafarawa and Hajiya Najaatu Muhammad, who felt it was time to give back to the public. Our focus is to unite the North, empower our youth, and provide solutions to our region’s challenges,” he added.

On political affiliations, the NSYEI clarified that it is not aligned with any political party and does not intend to evolve into one. “Our members are free to join any political party of their choice, but as a movement, we are not political. Our strength lies in the common northerner, and we aim to mobilize grassroots support,” Dr. Idris explained.

With focus on grassroots mobilization, Dr. Idris revealed plans to establish structures across northern states and collaborate with like-minded groups to create a united front for tackling regional issues. “Our goal is to galvanize 50 million registered and active Nigerians who can work for the North. With such a number, no politician can disregard us,” he stated.

To address structural challenges, the initiative has set up committees on education, health, security, and the economy to tackle the region’s problems systematically. It also plans to introduce innovative programs to economically empower youths and ensure equitable access to opportunities in public service.

“Why do northerners find it so difficult to secure jobs in public service without paying bribes? We will fight such injustices and ensure our people get what is rightfully theirs,” Dr. Idris said.

Dr. Idris called on northerners to join the movement, stressing that collective action is needed to salvage the region. “The North has a lot of problems that require urgent attention. No one is coming to save us, so we must act now to rescue ourselves and secure a better future,” he concluded.

He however concluded by saying NSYEI’s efforts are expected to gain momentum as similar meetings are being held across other northern states to build support for the initiative’s objectives.

  • Warri Refinery: Arewa Think Tank hails NNPCL, Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda

Warri Refinery: Arewa Think Tank hails NNPCL, Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda

The Arewa Think Tank (ATT) has commended the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for successfully reviving operations at the Warri Refinery in Delta state, describing it as proof that President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is on the right track.

In a statement issued on Thursday, ATT’s convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, congratulated the NNPCL board chairman, Pius Akinyelure, for demonstrating exceptional leadership and advancing the goals of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The group applauded the refinery’s revival as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s economic recovery efforts and called for sustained momentum to further enhance the nation’s energy sector.

According to the statement, “Arewa Think Tank wants to advise that President Tinubu should direct the NNPCL to also restart the operations at Kaduna Refinery and the 150,000 (bpd) second refinery in Port Harcourt to consolidate Nigeria’s position as a global energy provider.

“We are indeed excited at the successful revival of the Warri Refinery in Delta State, and we make bold to say that President Tinubu is walking the talk of his administration to make life better for the Citizens of this country.

“The Warri Refinery, now functioning at 60% of its 125,000 barrels per day capacity, marks a major step in reviving Nigeria’s oil refining sector, which has struggled with years of inactivity.

“This development will go a long way to increasing local refining to reduce dependence on fuel imports and position Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s energy landscape.

“It is unfortunate that the rehabilitation efforts for Nigeria’s four state-owned refineries began during President Muhammadu Buhari administration, with contracts awarded for their overhaul without little or impact felt on oil production in the country.

“However, we are happy that the workaholic President Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to seeing these projects through, directing NNPCL to ensure timely completion of ongoing work on the second Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery.

“The restart of Warri Refinery  brings joy and gladness to us at Arewa Think Tank and indeed all  Nigerians. This will further strengthen the hope and confidence of Nigerians for a greater and better future that Tinubu promised.

“This development is a remarkable way to end the year following the feat recorded earlier with the old Port Harcourt Refinery following Tinubu’s  directive  that  all  the four refineries should be restored to good working conditions.

“We want to also congratulate Mele Kyari and his team at NNPCL for working hard to restore our national pride and make Nigeria a hub for crude oil refining in Africa,” the statement said.
