Ajayi to Ijaw leaders: your votes can’t make me Gov

    Our Reporter

It was a day of mixed feelings over the weekend when the governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Agboola Ajayi, told leaders of the Arogbo Ijaw community resident in Akure he did not require their votes to be Governor.

The Deputy Governor had sought audience with leaders of thought of Arogbo Ijaw Kingdom ostensibly to secure an endorsement in a meeting facilitated by former National Secretary of Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Francis Williams.

But no sooner had the meeting progressed than some youths engaged Ajayi in a bid to extract explanations from him on the shabby treatment meted to Arogbo Ijaws, especially in the distribution of contracts and projects in Ese-Odo Local Government Area.

Rather than provide explanations to the issues raised, particularly his involvement in the legal tussle around a land dispute between the Arogbo Ijaws and Kiribo, Ajayi’s community, the deputy governor said: “I’ve seen it all. I have been a supervisor, council chairman, member of the House of Representatives and I’m now deputy governor.

“Even if the whole of Arogbo Ijaws doesn’t vote for me, I will be Governor if God says I will be Governor. So you should mind the way you address me.”

Ondo 2020: Mimiko seeking third term, says APC

    By Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former Ondo Governor Olusegun Mimiko of plotting a third-term bid surreptitiously through the back door using the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

A statement by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Yekini Nabena, alleged the former governor was using his control as the ZLP sole administrator in Ondo to tacitly execute his third term agenda during the October 10 governorship election.

The party said it was not surprised the entire governorship campaign of the ZLP has centred on Mimiko rather than “the obscure and supposed party’s governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi.”

The party cautioned Ondo residents to be mindful of the divide- and- rule policy that characterised the eight- year rule of Mimiko in the state.

It also recalled how the former Governor factionalised it then party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The statement reads in part: “Perhaps, Mimiko deludes himself that the good people of Ondo state have forgotten how they were subjected to his arbitrary, tyrannical and dictatorial actions when he governed the state. They have not!

“It is on record how Mimiko factionalised his then political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for his political divide and rule tactics in the party and government.

“Under Mimiko, government projects and patronage were disapproportinately distributed only based political servitude not priority needs of the State.

“Little wonder many of Mimiko’s associates have ditched him and are now frontline leaders of the APC, in firm support of our candidate, incumbent Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

“It is understandable, that the ZLP’s supposed governorship candidate has nothing to campaign on after juncketing several political parties to purchase their governorship ticket to contest the October 10 election in Ondo state.”

The ruling party flaunted the credentials of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, insisting its candidate’s records of performance were visible to all, particularly in the area of infrastructure, agriculture, human capital development, industry, entrepreneurship, among others.

“Governor Akeredolu first-term administration has ensured prudency, accountability, transparency and blocked leakages which have ultimately enhanced good governance.

“Ondo State has witnessed unprecedented and massive infrastructural developments, culminating in over 300 kilometres of critical roads beinn constructed and rehabilitated.

“Ondo is one of the model states that is successfully domesticating and implementing the diversification and agriculture drive of the APC government, with an army of over 6,000 trained Agripreneurs.

“The Ondo people know Governor Akeredolu as the governor who signed into law, a contributory health insurance scheme which enables all classes of people in the state access to affordable health care services.

“Under Governor Akeredolu, the good people of Ondo state are better off and are poised to overwhelmingly return him to continue his administration’s good work, come October 10.”

Jegede decries bad state of roads

    Our Reporter

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) has condemned the deplorable state of roads in Ondo State. He said it is a reflection of bad governance.

Jegede spoke during his campaign tour of communities in Odigbo Local Government.

Speaking at the palace of the monarch of Ajue community, the PDP standard-bearer said he had traversed virtually all communities in the state and noticed that they suffered neglect in terms of good roads.

“I have gone round the local government and discovered that the major problem facing your communities is lack of good roads. When the roads are bad, there cannot be any meaningful development in such area.

“This is the situation in virtually all communities across the state. It is a reflection of bad governance.

“If you vote for us, rest assured that these roads will be attended to; because we know that a good road is a booster for other forms of development,” he said.

Jegede, who also visited Kajola, Oniparaga, Ago Alaye, Omifon and Ore communities, assured farmers of financial empowerment, to enable them embark on large-scale mechanised farming.

“Our people should not be going to Kano, Sokoto or Benue before they could buy rice, beans or yam.

“Our farmers should be able to make them available here, even at a very minimal cost,” he said.

Welcoming the governorship candidate, the Akogbe of Ajue, Oba Bamidele Akinwe, hailed the masses-oriented programmes that formed Jegede’s campaign promises.

He appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that the October 10 governorship poll is free, fair and devoid of violence and bloodshed.

“Just do your best and let’s leave the rest. He (God) is the one that can enthrone and can also dethrone,” Jegede said.

‘Education, health care, hallmark of good governance’

    Our Reporter

Former Ondo State governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has described provision of quality education and health care delivery as the hallmark of good governance.

He spoke when the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) governorship campaign train stopped at Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government.

The ZLP campaign train was received by a huge crowd of party faithful and supporters when it arrived Okitipupa.

Mimiko said any government that failed to prioritise education and health care delivery had failed the people.

“Youths can no longer complete their education, they can’t enjoy quality education because of high tuition fees in government-owned schools.

“It has become impossible for our people to enjoy free health care because of exorbitant bills at government hospitals. These are signs of bad governance,” he said.

The ex-governor expressed concern about increase in tuition fees at the state owned tertiary institutions.

“How can a government that met tuition fees at N25,000 unilaterally increase it to over N200,000? This development has sent many people out schools,” he said.

ZLP governorship candidate Mr. Agboola Ajayi said the party would prioritise education and health care delivery.

Ajayi, the deputy governor, said the citizens would enjoy free education at the primary school and secondary school levels if ZLP was elected.

He said tuition fees at the tertiary level would be reduced to N50,000.

Ajayi urged the residents to vote for the ZLP in the interest of good governance and effective service delivery in the October 10 governorship election.

Alliance talks with ZLP not foreclosed, says PDP chieftain

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Segun Sowunmi, has said the party has not foreclosed talks with former governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko for the purpose of winning the October 10 governorship election.

This is despite repeated denials by the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Ondo State that there was no alliance talk with the PDP.

Sowunmi, a former spokesman for the Atiku Campaign Organisation, spoke in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He said PDP leaders were still mounting pressure on Mimiko to collapse the ZLP structure into the PDP with a view to defeating Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls.

The PDP chieftain noted that Mimiko remained a key factor in ensuring the collapse of the ZLP structures into PDP and supporting Eyitayo Jegede.

He said Jegede would not depart from the vision Mimiko had been driving.

Sowunmi warned that the Ajayi candidature would be dangerous, as he (Ajayi) was desperate about ruling the state.

”Ajayi cannot be trusted. Even when they gave him the second seat, as governor in waiting for Akeredolu, he made life difficult for him and couldn’t have the decency and dignity of resigning his appointment when he chose to jump ship. He carried their mandate up and down in the market, negotiating for what is not lost.

“When we gave him a big reception in a big party like the PDP that did not satisfy him. Can every man insist that every time he goes out for election he must win?  Or he will tell the world that he’s not from Ondo State if he loses this election? There is a limit to how you must scheme, for indeed God Almighty is the best of schemers.”

On Mimiko he said: ”We are not foreclosing alliance with Mimiko. In fact we are still on it and we have been begging everybody that has any voice to help us beg Mimiko. He is too precious to PDP.”

Why Akeredolu is best for Ondo, by Sanwo-Olu

    By Emmanuel Oladesu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday urged the electorate to vote for the All Progressives Congress (APC) standard-bearer in Ondo State, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

The Lagos governor, who chairs the APC National Campaign Council, was in Okitipupa, Ondo South Senatorial District, where he also held consultations with monarchs and community leaders on the need to return Akeredu for a second term.

He said the APC administration in Ondo State had performed creditably, stressing that the governor deserved a re-election for continuity.

Brooms filled the air as a crowd of supporters trooped out to welcome the campaign train that rolled into Ikaleland. The Lagos governor also campaigned in Ore, drumming support for Akeredolu and his running mate, Lucky Ayedatiwa.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the Ondo governor had delivered on his electoral promises, especially in the areas of good governance, road construction, infrastructural development and provision of dividends of democracy.

Urging voters to reward Akeredolu for his services and achievements in less than four years, Sanwo-Olu hoped that the APC would win the poll.

At a meeting with monarchs in Okitipupa Local Government, Sanwo-Olu implored them to support Akeredolu for the continuity of progressive services.

He said the APC leadership at the national, regional and state levels is solidly behind Akeredolu’s re-election.

Sanwo-Olu said: “As the chairman of the APC National Campaign Council, it is not enough for me to listen to the news about Ondo. I have come here to see things for myself and I’m very happy at what I have seen here.

“When Governor Akeredolu inaugurated the Ore flyover, I wasn’t around then, but when I got there recently I was surprised. It shows Governor Akeredolu is really working.

“I have come here to campaign for my brother based on the good work he has been doing and we see that he deserves another four years. APC governors in the Southwest are solidly behind him. All of us in APC are fully in support of him.”

Sanwo-Olu said during a campaign at Methodist Primary School in Okitipupa that Akeredolu was ready to surpass his own expectations.

He urged the electorate to vote for APC and defend their ballot.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who appreciated the support of the Ikale indigenes in Lagos for his election victory during the 2019 governorship poll, assured Ondo State people that Lagos State Government would collaborate more with Ondo State to bring development to the two states.

Governor Akeredolu, addressing the traditional rulers, said it is God that has given him the ability to work in the last three years for the good people of Ondo State, especially in Okitipupa Local Government.

Speaking about the perennial blackout in Ondo South Senatorial District, Governor Akeredolu promised that his administration will not relent until electricity returns fully to the area.

He said the contract that will ensure the electrification project in the area will be signed tomorrow (today).

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Abodi of Ikaleland, Oba George Faduyile, said Governor Akeredolu has no problem as far as the people of Ikale are concerned, adding that the people will vote for him on October 10.

The statement said: “Members of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room were at the Force Headquarters to congratulate the IGP on the recent reforms and achievements of the Force, especially the new Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which repeals the Police Act Cap. P19, Laws of the Federation, 2004 and secondly, the recent commendable outing in the just concluded Edo governorship election. They called for sustainability and improvement on the Police culture in managing elections, as was evident in Edo State.

”The meeting availed the Police leadership ample opportunity to carry out post-election analysis and general overview of the just concluded Edo State governorship poll, in addition to getting feedback, especially from the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Human Rights Community on necessary gains to advance and observe lapses to correct in subsequent elections.

”The IGP, while appreciating the CSOs for their commendable roles in the electioneering processes and their invaluable contributions toward the passage of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, reassured that the Force will continue to partner the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other stakeholders in election management towards ensuring free, fair, peaceful and credible elections, not only in the Ondo election, but also in subsequent elections.”

Akeredolu, Mimiko in crossfire over performance

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Former Ondo State governor and leader of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) Dr. Olusegun Mimiko and his successor, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, at the weekend traded blame over performance indexes.

Mimiko, at a campaign at Ile-Oluji in Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Local Government, said Akeredolu was a disappointment to the people.

He told the crowd that the candidate of the ZLP, Agboola Ajayi, would right the wrongs of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

Mimiko described Akeredolu’s policy as anti-people, especially the cancellation of free health and increase in tuition fees paid by tertiary institution students.

He said he worked with three governors before emerging as governor for eight years, adding that Akeredolu failed in all critical sectors affecting the well-being of the people.

Mimiko urged the people vote out Akeredolu, saying he (Akeredolu) has vowed to go back to his base if not voted for.

The former governor said his successor failed to build on the successes recorded in the health and education sectors during his tenure.

He said: “The Akeredolu administration’s claim to performance is nothing but falsehood, as all indices show otherwise.

“There is no person that will say he has not performed. But how do we differentiate performance? Any government that has not democratised education is a bad government.

“This government that hiked school fees is a bad government. Akeredolu’s government is an enemy of the people. Anybody that votes for Akeredolu is selling his children’s future.

“Any government that does not make health free is your enemy. Akeredolu’s government is an enemy of the people for cancelling mother and child and free health for children.

“Any time they come here to campaign for votes, ask him, where is our shuttle buses? Where is our abiye? The government that cancelled trauma centre is your enemy.

“This governor has not performed, he is anti-people. Any government that fails to democratise access to education, health and other essential services to the people is not a good government.”

Ajayi said he has listened to the cries of the people and offered himself as “an alternative to this misrule of Akeredolu.”

But Governor Akeredolu, through the spokesman for his campaign organisation, Olatunde Richard, said it was unfortunate that Mimiko, who sacked over 10,000 workers, was calling his administration anti-people government.

He said he has not sacked anybody in the state workforce, either at the local or state level.

Akeredolu said lecturers that were sacked unjustly at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko were alive to bear witness to the anti-people government of Mimiko.

Said he: “These workers were only reinstated by Governor Akeredolu.

“Because of politics, Mimiko killed the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OAUSTECH).  What’s more anti-people than the actions of Mimiko in abandoning the projects left behind by the late Agagu?”

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), Mr. Segun Sowunmi, has said the party has not foreclosed talks with former Ondo Governor Olusegun Mimiko for next week’s governorship election.

He gave the assurance despite repeated denial by the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Ondo that there was no alliance talks with the PDP.

Sowunmi, who was a former spokesman of the Atiku Campaign Organisation, spoke in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

He said PDP leaders were still mounting pressure on Mimiko to collapse the ZLP structure into the PDP with a view to defeating Governor Rotimi Akeredolu at the polls.

On Mimiko he said: “We are not foreclosing alliance with Mimiko, infact we are still on it and we have been begging everybody that has any voice with to help us beg Mimiko. Mimiko is too precious to PDP

“I am saying this with every sense of responsibility that Olusegun Rahman Mimiko is too precious to PDP as an individual and we will continue to beg him to come and provide leadership and direction.

“Mimiko cannot produce a son in Eyitayo Jegede and tell us who believe in him that we should stop when he has already given us instructions to go ahead and now we are on the move, even if the General is a little bit relunctatant, we are going to carry him on our head to the battle ground because Eyitayo Jegede and Mimiko are the same.

“Mimiko is our products and we have a right to him because that’s what leadership entails. A leader does not owns himself any more.

“Mimiko is one of the finest materials from the south west region in terms of intellectual capability and I can guarantee you that whatever little fray nerves we need to calm, our leaders will try hard to calm it and I believe that at the thirteenth hour, Mimiko will sit and choose the best from the candidates.

“We are talking of two personalities of Senior Advocates of Nigeria in the race, men of quality character, running neck to neck and praying that one of them should win, most likely we pray Jegede wins, and you’re talking about a man who at best there is a court order that whatever he is presenting as certificate is a matter for conjection.

“Ondo cannot fall that way. No any Yoruba state will go so low to present some like him. Do you know where we are, we are talking about the state of great Ajasin, a genius, talking about a state of Olusegun Agagu, a super genius, the state of Rahman Mimiko, the erudite Mimiko, a state of Akeredolu and you are calling who? No, no. Don’t go there please.

“There are claims that Mimiko is behind him, but I tell you that will not be enough. It will not be enough because if you want to put a candidate forward for the people, they will check the personality of those involved in the race.

“Let the pundits deceive themselves with very simple research but those who know understand that when the chips are down, every person in Ondo who has taken a decision is going to ask himself who do I trust on the job.

“I tell you this categorically that no one will think of the third man in the race as I expect him to be a distant third. I expect him to be dragging position with a little less known political parties or other small parties, when we have the two elephants in the room.

“Did you see the kind of people that attended APC flag off rally, did you see the caliber of people that attended PDP rally too, how the entire Akure burst into celebration? Who is standing with him? I believe that every contraption after this two great parties is just a minor irritation on the ballot.

“You don’t win election alone, you win election with people, you win with with stakeholders, with leadership class.”

    Sanwo-Olu hails Akeredolu’s development strides

    Agency Reporter

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu has acknowledged the development strides recorded by Ondo state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, saying that the different masterpiece infrastructure which dots the landscape, including the Ore Industrial Park, have turned the Sunshine state to an industrial haven.

The governor, who is the Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship National Campaign Council, spoke when he joined his Ondo state counterpart on a campaign tour of Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo state in preparation for the October 10th governorship poll in the state.

Akeredolu, the incumbent, is the candidate of the ruling party.

Asides the endorsement of Sanwo-Olu, Akeredolu also got a unanimous endorsement of the entire traditional institution in Ikaleland.

Speaking during the tour, Akeredolu who was received by a mammoth crowd assured the people of Ikale that: “Electricity power will be restored to all communities in Ondo South Senatorial District through Omotosho Power Plant.”

Sanwoolu, who was taken round the Industrial Park, that currently houses seven nanufacturing companies, all multinationals, said history will be kind to Akeredolu for turning obscurity to greatness.

Upbeat, an elated Sanwo-Olu also described the Ore flyover bridge built by the Akeredolu government as an epitome of London just as he said his deliberate visit to Ikale kingdom is connected with the earlier support he got from Ikale people during his bid for the governorship seat, stating that the Ikale Union of Lagos state gave him one of the best supports prior to his election in 2019.

“Ore Industrial is a masterpiece, sincerely I am enthralled. I am opportune to see the flyover in Ore too. It is an Epitome of London. Mr. Governor, may history be kind to you for turning an obscurity to greatness.

“My coming here today was historical. It is to appreciate what the Ikale Union of Lagos state did for me when I contested to be governor in 2019 in Lagos state. They supported me, gave me cars and other needed items for campaign. They gave me one of the best supports.

“Now, I plead with you all, you must ensure that the election is for Akeredolu. I am honored to be here today, I feel very joyous to pay homage to the group that supported me. Akeredolu, from all indications, deserves a second term; his good work will earn him another term,” he said.

Endorsing Akeredolu when the APC campaign train paid homage to them, the Ikale traditional rulers said Akeredolu deserves their support, if not for anything, but for renaming the state owned University at Okitipupa after their son, Olusegun Agagu.

Agagu governed Ondo state from 2003 to 2009 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He reportedly died of cardiac arrest in 2013.

The university, established by the late Agagu as the “Ondo state University of Technology Okitipupa (OSUTECH)”, was renamed “Olusegun Agagu University of Technology, Okitipupa” by Akeredolu.

In his remarks, on behalf of other monarchs, the Abodi of Ikale Land, Oba G.B Faduyile, lauded Governor Akeredolu’s giant strides, adding that his good deeds will earn him another term in office.

The monarch noted that Ikale monarchs are merely towing the path of the earlier endorsement of Akeredolu by the traditional rulers of Ondo state.

It will be recalled that the traditional rulers in Ondo State had on June 25, 2020, endorsed the Governor.

Corroborating Abodi, the Rebuja of Osooro Land, Oba Gbadebo Bajowa, said: “I am most delighted to be here today because Governor Akeredolu renamed OSUTECH after our illustrious son of blessed memory, Dr. Olusegun Agagu.”

“Barring this, it is an unassailable fact that Akeredolu has done well, he performed to our expectations. Asides renaming OSUTECH after Agagu, Akeredolu rejuvenated the institution, making it a centre of attraction”

While appreciating the governor, Oba Gbadebo stated that the construction of bypass road from Okitipupa to Igbokoda is another reason to suport Akeredolu for another term.

Responding, Akeredolu thanked the traditional rulers for throwing their robust weight behind his government and reelection bid.

The governor, who called for peace ahead of the election slated for October 10, harped on the need for the people to imbibe peace.

The residents, who were filled with happiness, chanted songs and praises, when the governor assured them that the total blackout in the district will be behind them soon.

Akeredolu assured that assiduous efforts are on, as there is a synergy with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to restore electricity to the entire South Senatorial District through the Omotosho Power Plant in the axis.

“Let’s go to the industrial hub, you will see our feats, we have five functional industries in our environs now. We have Okitipupa Oil Palm Industry, we rejuvenated the place,  we will ensure that there will be light in your area.

“We will end the total blackout in the south. The agreement to connect this community with omotosho power plant will soon be signed with the NDDC.

“Before, we have installed solar powers in our primary schools; Okitipupa benefitted well from this. Okitipupa benefited the most from the schools and hospitals we renovated,” Akeredolu said.

Other dignitaries in the campaign train included Akeredolu’s running mate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the Campaign Director-General, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, immediate past Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Ifedayo Abegunde, ex-national Vice Chairman of the APC, Pastor kole Oluwajana and the National Women Leader of APC, Mrs Stellar Okotete.

Others in the campaign train were billionaire business Man, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim, former Governorship Aspirant, Chief Olusola Oke, Chief of Staff to the Governor, Olugbenga Ale, and the Chairperson of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Princess Oladuni Odu, amongst others.
