Job creation, youths empowerment focus of my second term – Akeredolu

Ondo state Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has assured that he would focus on massive job creation across all sectors during his second term.

He gave this charge on Thursday when he addressed members of the youth and students mobilisation arm of his campaign organisation at the International Event Centre (The Dome), Igbatoro Road, Akure.

He also disclosed that the moribund Oluwa Glass, Igbokoda, in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state, has been resuscitated, stating that the investor the state government is partnering with has paid the first instalment of the funds needed to turn Oluwa Glass to the status of its founding fathers.

Akeredolu also hinted of plans to establish the Ondo State Youth Entrepreneurship Development Agency to see to the policy of job creation through youth entrepreneurship, if reelecte

In his words, Akeredolu, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said, “When I was sworn in 2017, the first executive bill I sent to the Ondo State House of Assembly was the establishment of Ondo State Development and Investment Promotion Agency (ONDIPA) to see to the policy of investment promotion, business development and wealth creation in our state

“Today, through ONDIPA, Ondo has moved from number 34 to number 16 in the ease of doing business in Nigeria. By the grace of Almighty God, the Ore Industrial Park is a creation of ONDIPA under the leadership of Boye Oyewumi,”he said.

Facing the youth, who are mostly students leaders, Akeredolu continued “I am pleased to inform this gathering that through the efforts of ONDIPA, the moribund OluwaGlass at Igbokaoda is back. The Investor has paid full installments of the company, by the grace of God, the reconstruction of the firm will start within the next few months.

“Therefore, as ONDIPA is working on investment drive and business development, what we will be doing in our second term is to establish the Ondo state Youth Entrepreneurs Agency to help raise young entrepreneurs who will create jobs for graduates. We cannot afford to remain a civil service state because the syatem is overbloated.

“Youth are the future of tomorrow, it is important that we invest greatly in them. Leadership is not exclusive to governance alone, so when they say leaders of tomorrow, it’s not about politics alone. You can be leaders in the agricultural sector, in entrepreneurship, in entertainment etc

“Let me say very pointedly that I am coming back to ensure that the dream of Ondo state to have a sea port becomes a reality. I am seeking  reelection to build an Ondo state that will create jobs through industrialisation, entrepreneurship development, sea port and bitumen exploration.

“I am also working very hard to ensure that the Akure Airport is upgraded to an international airport. We can, Yes, We Can,” Akeredolu concluded.

In his remarks, the chairman, Youth and Students Mobilisation Committee of the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation, Mr. Akinrinsola Odunayo, charged students across the state to vote massively for Akeredolu so that he can consolidate his plans on wealth creation, stating that “there is development today in Lagos because of continuity.

“Four years is not enough, we need to come around to help Mr. Governor to consolidate on his current achievements in the state. Lagos state is what it is today because there’s continuity in the state.

“Akeredolu is the man to lead Ondo state to her Cannan Land for he has given us a reason. Ondo state is currently on path of transformation and renewal. Akeredolu is building us, and he is giving us a reason to be optimistic about what the future brings,” Akinrinsola said.

Ondo 2020: My Deputy plans to rig in Ilaje, says Akeredolu

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Ondo Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has raised the alarm over alleged plans by his Deputy, Hon Agboola Ajayi, to militarise Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, during next Saturday’s governorship election

Akeredolu said the plan aimed at intimidating the people and discouraging them from coming out to vote with a view to giving the ZLP a conducive atmosphere to rig the election in favor of Agboola.

Akeredolu, who spoke through the spokesman of his campaign organisation, Olatunde Richard, said the people of Ilaje were determined to vote massively for the APC, to ensure their son, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, his deputy governorship candidate, is voted into power.

He said the people must be allowed to exercise their franchise without intimidation or fear on the election day.

According to him: “This dubious plan by the ZLP should not only be condemned, but prevented from happening.

“While we are calling on the security agencies to intervene and save Ondo State from electoral violence and deliberate intimidation, we want to urge our supporters across the state, particularly the people of Ilaje to remain calm, but say no to intimidation and evil plans by the ZLP and their cohorts.

“We trust that the security agencies, particularly the Military will be above board and discharge as an unbiased actor in the election.”

Chief Press Secretary to Agboola, Babatope Okeowo, said it was the APC and PDP that have been engaging in violence at their various campaigns.

Okeowo urged the APC and Akeredolu APC to explain what has done for the riverine areas for the past three and half years.

He said: “They are jittery of the fact that they have lost the governorship election. Why Ilaje Local Government Area?

” APC is threatened by the growing popularity of ZLP and its candidate in the council. How do you do expect the people to support a government that siphoned OSOPADEC funds and abandoned the people in darkness for four years?

“I will implore security agencies to investigate the ruling party and prevent any attempt to foment any ploy by APC to cause crisis and rig the election on that day. The people will speak with their votes and vote for ZLP and Agboola Ajayi. “

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the October 10 governorship election Eyitayo Jegede has promised to sanitise the education sector if elected as governor.

He said he has assured parents that the exorbitant tuition fees will be reversed.

The PDP standard-bearer spoke at Daada community in Akure North Local Government after the community leaders complained about the state of public schools.

Chief Patrick Ojo, who spoke on behalf of the community, said there were only two teachers at Daada Community Primary School.

He said: “This is the situation in most rural communities of Ondo State where the current government only assigned two teachers to a school.

“In the first place, there is no way the two teachers can cope with the stress of the job.

“Again, no human being is an encyclopaedia, such that he has the capacity to know every subject.

“So it is best imagined, what we, the rural dwellers of Ondo State, are going through.

“As you can see sir, we don’t have a good road.

“You can rest assured of our votes, but please put our requests in mind.”

Jegede said it was absurd for two teachers to be posted to a school. “We will improve schools’ infrastructure and ensure quality education.

“As for the bad road, it is a priority that it should be fixed, as it will ease the movement of produce to the urban communities.”

Owo residents recount experience after APC, PDP clash

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Victims of Tuesday’s clash between suspected thugs loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo Local Government have recounted how they were robbed and beaten up.

The political parties had engaged in a war of words after the attack that left 13 persons injured and over 20 vehicles destroyed.

The governorship candidate of the PDP, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, alleged that his convoy was attacked at Ipele and Owo township by heavily armed APC thugs, while one man, Amuda Sikiru, was shot in the face and abdomen.

He added that a truck in his convoy was burnt down.

But the APC campaign spokesman, Olatunde Richard, alleged that it was Jegede who ordered his thugs to unleash attacks on the people of Ipele and Ijebu in Owo Local Government.

He said the PDP members went berserk when no one received them into Owo town.

The victims of the attack spoke when Police Commissioner Mr. Bolaji Salami and the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Philip Ayuba, visited Ijebu-Owo and Ipele to ascertain the level of destruction carried out by suspected thugs.

One of the victims, Mrs. Nike Alale, said she was attacked while buying fuel at Bovas Gas Station at Aro Junction in Owo.

She said: “We were buying fuel here and all of a sudden we heard gunshots. We had to run inside the fuel station office. We watched them as they destroyed my vehicle. They were shouting “Eyi La fe”. They stole all the valuables in my car, including my phones and this car document.

“They came down from a PDP campaign convoy. We saw them shouting kill them! Kill them! There is no APC sticker on my car. I am not an APC member. This is unfair.”

The leader of the Owo High Hope Club, Mr. Deji Ogunbodede, said members of the club were drinking peacefully before the attack.

He said: “We were drinking peacefully and suddenly we heard gunshots. Some boys entered this place with guns. They wore PDP vests and caps. They aimed at us, but we ran away. Look at bullets all over the floor. Our cars were destroyed. They packed our phones.

Over 30 phones were stolen from here. They broke into my car and carted away valuables, including the photocopy of the car documents. They broke our fridge and took bottles of beer away.”

“We were surprised. This club is not for APC. It belongs to Owo people. We see this attack as an attack on Owo town. It’s a taboo. People don’t bring war to Owo. The worst part was that they were shielded by the police, Civil Defence personnel and soldiers.”

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Ipele branch, Bukunmi Ojo, who was hospitalised, said he was beaten up and stabbed by the attackers.

He said the PDP governorship candidate, Jegede, lied on Channels Television yesterday when he referred to him as a member of the PDP.

“I am not a PDP member as claimed by Jegede on TV yesterday. Everyone at Ipele knows that I am an APC member,” Ojo said.

The police commissioner said he went round and saw that belongings were damaged and many people were injured.

He said the perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted.

Police spokesman Tee-Leo Ikoro said several persons have been arrested.

He said investigation was on to unravel those behind the attack.

  • Akeredolu, Ajayi clash over OSOPADEC fund

Akeredolu, Ajayi clash over OSOPADEC fund

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

The governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Agboola Ajayi, has told coastal area residents to blame Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for lack of development in the area.

He alleged that the fund meant to develop the oil rich region through the Ondo State Oil and Gas Producing Areas (OSOPADEC) was mismanaged by the governor.

Ajayi alleged that one of the reasons he fell out with his boss was the mismanagement of the fund accruing to the state for the development of the coastal areas.

The deputy governor alleged at Igbokoda, Agadagba and Igbekebo communities in Ilaje and Eseodo local governments that OSOPADEC fund was in the coffers of few individuals in the state.

Ajayi, who challenged Akeredolu to account for billions of Naira that accrued to OSOPADEC, said he would prevent stealing of the commission’s fund if elected as governor.

He promised to increase the allocation meant for the development of the area.

Ajayi said the way Akeredolu treated him as his deputy showed that there was nothing special about being a deputy governor, adding that the prompt release of OSOPADEC fund was far better than being a lame duck deputy nominated by the governor’s wife.

Said he: “God will not forgive those who steal our fund at OSOPADEC. It is unfortunate that this government cannot point to one project executed with our fund in the last three and a half years.

“I am not going to treat my deputy the way Akeredolu treated me. I am the one that said I am not interested in being a deputy governorship candidate. The governor’s wife then nominated Lucky Ayedatiwa as the running mate of her husband.”

Ajayi reiterated his stand that he was not going into alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the October 10 governorship election.

Governor Akeredolu, speaking through his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said Ajayi was only misinforming the electorate.

“We are not surprised he is saying so because it is part of him to misinform, mislead and sustain untruth for his personal ambition. If Governor Akeredolu was mismanaging OSOPADEC funds, it means he (the deputy governor) was more culpable because he was in charge of OSOPADEC.

“He ensured his companies got contracts from the agency and collected so much money. Ajayi plundered OSOPADEC.”

Akeredolu said Ajayi is a major contractor to OSOPADEC.

He challenged Ajayi to provide evidence that funds accrued to OSOPADEC were mismanaged and in the hands of few individuals.

  • Obasanjo never met Mimiko on support for PDP, says aide

Obasanjo never met Mimiko on support for PDP, says aide

By Osagie Otabor, Akure and Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

Ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo’s spokesman Kehinde Akinyemi said last night that his boss did not meet Dr Olusegun Mimiko in Abuja concerning support for the Peoples Democratic Party (Pdp) in the october 10 governorship election.

The Nation had learnt that governors elected on the platform of the PDP were not leaving anything to chance in their quest to go into alliance with the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), ahead of the poll.

It was gathered that the PDP governors had purportedly reached out to former President Obasanjo to talk to the leader of the ZLP, Dr. Mimiko, to dump the ZLP and support Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the PDP.

Sources in the PDP said Obasanjo purportedly met with Mimiko in Abuja, but details of the meeting were still being kept secret.

The sources said Mimiko also met with a PDP northern governor last weekend.

It was learnt that after the meeting in Abuja, Mimiko flew to Akure to campaign for the ZLP at Ile-Oluji in Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government.

Another source said last week’s Federal High Court judgment that ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the particulars of Agboola Ajayi may be the reason Mimiko is going into talks with the PDP.

A former spokesman for the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, Mr. Segun Sowunmi, had told reporters in Akure that the PDP was not foreclosing talks with Mimiko.

He said Mimiko remained a key factor in ensuring the collapse of the ZLP structures into PDP.

Some chieftains of the ZLP were said to have vowed not to follow Mimiko if he opted to dump the party for the PDP.

The chieftains, who pleaded anonymity, said: “There is no longer trust among the ZLP leaders. Honestly, there is palpable fear in the party at the moment. We are scared that Mimiko may dump Ajayi at the eleventh hour.”

But Ajayi described the planned collapse of ZLP structure as a rumour sponsored by what he termed the drowning PDP.

He urged Jegede to be bold and honest to confess to the public that his campaign was not flying.

Ajayi advised the purveyors of fake alliance to discontinue using his name to curry favour from the electorate.

Ajayi, who spoke through his media adviser, Sowore Allen, said he had never worked with Jegede and would not under any circumstance work with him towards the October 10 governorship election.

All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that Mimiko, a former two-term governor of Ondo State, is plotting a third term bid through the ZLP.

Mr. Yekini Nabena, the deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, made the allegation in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

He said: “Mimiko was first elected as governor of Ondo State on the platform of the Labour Party on February 24, 2009.

“He contested as the Labour Party candidate and was re-elected on October 20, 2012, for a second term, making him the first governor in Ondo State to win a second term election since 1999.

“He, however, later defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the end of his tenure as governor on February 24, 2017.”

The APC deputy national publicity secretary alleged: “A former two-term governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, is plotting a third term bid surreptitiously through the Zenith Labour Party.”

He said Mimiko controlled the Zenith Labour Party as its sole administrator.

Nabena said it was therefore not surprising that the entire governorship campaign of the ZLP was centred around Mimiko, rather than its supposed governorship candidate Agboola Ajayi.

“Perhaps, Mimiko deludes himself that the good people of Ondo State have forgotten how they were subjected to his arbitrary, tyrannical and dictatorial actions when he governed the state.”

Ex-President Obasanjo’s spokesman Kehinde Akinyemi said last night that the former President did not meet Mimiko in Abuja.

“It is on record how Mimiko factionalised his then political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for his political divide and rule tactics in the party and government,” Nabena said.

According to him, under Mimiko, government projects and patronage were distributed based on political servitude not priority needs of the state.

He said this could be the reason most of his associates ditched him and are now front line leaders of the APC, in firm support of its candidate, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

Nabena said it was understandable that the ZLP’s governorship candidate had nothing substantial to campaign on after joining several political parties to purchase their governorship tickets to contest the October 10 election.

“For us in the APC, the good governance credentials of our candidate, incumbent Governor Akeredolu, is visible to all, particularly in the area of infrastructure, agriculture, human capital development, industry and entrepreneurship, among others.

“This is the focus of our well received campaigns.

“Governor Akeredolu’s first term administration has ensured prudency, accountability, transparency and blocked leakages, which have ultimately enhanced good governance.

“Ondo State has witnessed unprecedented and massive infrastructural development, culminating in over 300 kilometres of critical roads being constructed and rehabilitated,” he said.

According to him, Ondo State is one of the model states that is successfully domesticating and implementing the diversification and agriculture drive of the APC government with over 6,000 trained “Agripreneurs”.

He said Ondo people had confidence in Governor Akeredolu, who signed into law, a contributory health insurance scheme, which enables all classes of people in the state to have access to affordable health care services.

Nabena added that under Akeredolu, the people were better off and were poised to overwhelmingly return him to continue his administration’s good work on October 10.

The Association of Persons with Disability in Ondo has pledged to vote massively for the re-election of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

It said the decision to endorse Akeredolu was to show appreciation for support for persons with disabilities in the state.

A spokesman for the PWDs in Ondo, Mr. Gideon Joseph, told reporters in Akure they have already begun mass mobilisation of their members across the state.

Gideon, who urged INEC to make polling units conducive for physically challenged persons, said Akeredolu has supported 20 amputees with artificial limbs.

He said the recent employment of 35 disabled persons into the state civil service was also another reason for their support.

Special Assistant to Governor Akeredolu on Special Persons, Princess Folashade Arise, said the Governor’s scorecards in the disability community surpassed previous administrations.

According to her: “It is the right time to pay back his good job. On this note, I hereby pledge and declare the support of all Persons with Disabilities in Ondo State for Mr. Governor’s second term.

“I, therefore, urge our members to troop out en masse and cast your vote for Mr. Governor.”

Ondo State Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, on Wednesday, assured that with God on his side, he will emerge victorious at the forthcoming October 10th governorship election in the state.

Waxing philosophical, he said, “The grace of God that I am enjoying will disgrace all my political enemies.”

He also asserted that he neither relies on rigging nor any form of manipulation, but hopes to win the electoral contest to keep his hold on power for another four years through the votes of the people.

Quoting what could be likened to the affirmations of Abraham Lincoln, Akeredolu, who spoke while addressing the jubilant crowd that greeted his arrival to Isua-Akoko, the headquarters of Akoko South East Local Government in continuation of his political campaign, pointedly declared that he is the man to beat, and the power of the people heavily standing behind him, will fight his battle for him against his political adversaries.

“My opponents have deployed all weapons of destruction against me and my family for political exigency but the grace of God that I am enjoying will disgrace them without an exception.

“They said I did not do anything in Akoko but they drive through Oke Alabojuto every day. Our Water scheme is in their towns. We renovated their schools and hospitals. Yet, they said we did nothing in Akoko.

He urged the Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, to warn his men to abide by the rules and not to serve as agents of provocation in the hands of the Ondo State Government.

He accused the APC-led government of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of continuous pursuit of promoting violence ahead of the election.

The PDP candidate alleged that his campaign team was again attacked by members of the APC at Ipele.

He alleged the APC members blocked access to the palace and his maternal home with a view to denying him access to both places.

“We would like to warn the APC and its government to know very clearly that no individual has the monopoly of violence. While we are very cautious about the implication of promoting violence in this election, we, however, would not be intimated in our pursuit of victory at the polls.

    Akeredolu slams PDP

    From Osagie Otabor, Akure

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has slammed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for describing his comments on his personal relationship with Dr. Olusegun Mimiko as “political terrorism.”

Akeredolu, who urged the PDP to stop being busybody over Mimiko, said the party had reduced itself to shadow-chasing regarding the campaign for the October 10 governorship election.

The governor said he was entitled to his views that Mimiko and the former chief judge of the state, Olasehinde Kumuyi, were his enemies for life because of their betrayal.

He said to describe such statement as “political terrorism”, was not only irresponsible, but also immature and irrational.

Akeredolu, through spokesman for his campaign organisation Olatunde Richard said his rare qualities of decency, integrity and outspokenness were alien to the PDP.

Read Also: Alliance talks with ZLP not foreclosed, says PDP chieftain

He said the PDP by its statement had betrayed the view and position of one of its leaders and former Senate deputy president Ike Ekweremadu, who he said once described Mimiko as a treacherous politician, after he dumped the PDP for his former party, the Labour Party.

“Governor Akeredolu’s truthfulness and courage to speak out no matter whose ox is gored, is an attribute that continues to endear him to the people and this should never be sacrificed on the slab of bitter politics. Such attribute is alien to the PDP as a party that is built on lies and deceit.”

“While we will no longer dignify the PDP with comments on this kind of unreasonable tantrums, we urge them to tell the people of Ondo State what they have to offer and desist from this trick of seeking undue popularity through petty engagement.

“The Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation warns the PDP that the people of Ondo State cannot be deceived into returning to slavery.”
