    ‘Nothing can stop Akeredolu’s victory’

    By Rasaq Ibrahim, Ado-Ekiti

A former governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Mr. Olusegun Agbalajobi, has said nothing will stop Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s re-election.

He said Akeredolu would emerge victorious with a wide margin on Saturday, adding that any conspiracy against him would fail because he had restored people’s hope in governance.

The APC chieftain, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, noted that there were indications across the state that the APC would win by 75 per cent in the 18 local government areas of Ondo State.

He said Akeredolu deserved re-election following his uncompromising commitment to changing the narrative of governance and developing the state.

Agbalajobi said the state had witnessed infrastructural development in the last three years, adding that projects scattered across the three senatorial districts were testimonies of Akeredolu’s superb qualities.

He said re-electing the governor for another four years would allow him to consolidate on his achievements, thereby moving Ondo State to a higher ground.

Agbalajobi advised Ondo State people not to allow opposition parties to abort the developmental stride of the APC-led administration, urging them to support Akeredolu to enable him consolidate on the gains of his first term.

ADC suspends members for anti-party activities

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

With less than 48 hours to Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State, African Democratic Congress (ADC) has wielded the big stick against some of its state executives who endorsed candidates of other parties.

It announced the suspension of its former state executives and chieftains for alleged anti-party activities.

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) announced their defection to the ADC.

The National Vice Chairman of the party, Comrade Peter Edeh, stated this at the party’s grand finale rally held in Akure.

He announced Ibrahim Rasheed as the new acting chairman of the party and Comrade Timothy Akinola as the acting secretary.

Edeh urged the defectors to deliver votes for the party.

National Chairman Chief Ralphs Nwosu described ADC as the fastest growing party in the country.

Nwosu, represented by Alhaji Ibrahim Suleiman, said the party’s candidate for the Ondo election, Dapo Adelegan, was the most credible politician in the state.

He said the party is committed to transformation of Ondo economy as well as serve the people well.

Adelegan urged the party members not to be bothered about defections, but to be focused on winning the election.

He said he had campaigned across the state and was sure of victory.

Group urges Ndigbo, others to vote for Akeredolu

    By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

A socio-cultural group has advised Ndigbo and non-indigenes in Ondo State to back the re-election bid of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The group, under the auspices of Ndigbo Patriotic Association, said the governor deserved a second term, considering his developmental strides.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, the President-General of the group, Mazi Obinna Okeke, described Akeredolu as honest, saying Ondo State people were lucky to have him as governor.

He listed some of the governor’s achievements to include Ore Industrial Park, Mother and Child Hospital at Ifon, the N9.2billion chocolate factory and the N4.2billion egg factory.

Okeke said: “The people are privileged to have such a forthright man as governor.

“The electorate, including Ndigbo and non-indigenes, should troop out en masse on Saturday to vote for Akeredolu for continuity and sustainability of his laudable programmes.”

He praised the wife of the governor, Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, for her passion towards driving gender equality and women development in the state.

Okeke extolled her for some of her laudable initiatives such as the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN), Ondo Widows Care and others, which, according to him, have positioned Ondo women for sustainable growth and development.

Group seeks Ajayi’s disqualification ‘for certificate forgery’

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

An Akure-based lawyer, Femi Emmanuel Emodamori, has asked an Ondo State High Court to disqualify the governorship candidate of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr. Agboola Ajayi, from contesting Saturday’s election for allegedly submitting forged certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The suit has ZLP and INEC as the 2nd and 3rd defendants.

An Abuja Federal High Court had issued an order of mandamus to compel INEC to publish the particulars of Ajayi.

Besides the disqualification, Emodamori is also seeking an order of the court compelling INEC to stop or withdraw the recognition accorded Ajayi as the candidate of the ZLP.

In the suits Emodamori listed three grounds he based his argument on.

The first ground, according to Emodamori, was that Ajayi never participated in the ZLP primary election, as the Constitution and Electoral Act clearly state that nobody should be declared as the winner of any election in which he has not participated at all the stages.

The second ground was that Ajayi also (allegedly) presented a forged WASSC to INEC, which he claimed to have obtained as an internal student of Community High School, Mobolorunduro, in the 2004 May/June Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), as his highest academic qualification.

Emodamori argued that Ajayi was the chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State from 2003 to 2007 in full time service as required by the Constitution, and was never simultaneously an internal student of the secondary school where he claimed to have obtained the 2004 May/June WASSC.

The third ground canvassed by the lawyer was that Ajayi engaged in deliberate falsehood and concealment by stating WASSC as his highest academic qualification in the INEC Form EC9, whereas he has filled the Council of Legal Education Application Form for Call to the Nigerian Bar.

    By Nicholas Kalu, Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu, has warned politicians against actions and utterances that could be inimical to a free, fair and credible Ondo governorship election on Saturday.

In a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, on Wednesday, the IGP warned the full weight of the law will be meted out to anyone, no matter their status in society, who engages in any electoral fraud such as political violence, vote buying, ballot box snatching, hate speeches and all other unwholesome practices capable of undermining the peace and stability of the electoral process.

“Similarly, the IGP has charged all Police Officers and other law enforcement agents deployed for the election to act in accordance with the Electoral Act and other extant laws guiding their overall conduct before, during and after the elections.

  • SDP candidate endorses Akeredolu as chairman backs Jegede

SDP candidate endorses Akeredolu as chairman backs Jegede

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

The crisis rocking the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Ondo State has deepened.

The leaders are divided between endorsing Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Governorship candidate Prince Oyeleye Fasua collapsed his structure for Governor Akeredolu, while the acting state Chairman, Dele Thomas, joined nine other parties to endorse Jegede.

The SDP lawmaker in the House of Representatives, Mr. Tajudeen Adefisoye, has also declared support for Akeredolu.

Speaking about why he endorsed Akeredolu, Fasua said he opted to settle for a candidate that had experience.

Fasua, who donated a branded coaster bus to Akeredolu, said the governor’s explanation at a debate organised by Face the Voter Initiative showed that his reasons for seeking to govern the state had been achieved.

He assured Governor Akeredolu that SDP structures across the state would work for the victory of the APC on Saturday.

Fasua said: “I was to choose between three giants with experience and experiment. I saw that Akeredolu has the experience. The manifesto read out by the governor at the debate endeared me to him.

“SDP used to be a big party. There were three mighty people. I have to support one, even if I wanted to win the race. I didn’t have much interest in Akeredolu initially, but during the debate, he explained what he has done.”

“I will put in efforts for the APC to enable it win this election.”

On the stance of the party chairman to support Jegede, Fasua said they had an agreement on Sunday night to collapse the party structure for Akeredolu.

He said he was disappointed when he heard that the party chairman was at the PDP secretariat to endorse Jegede.

“We were both at the debate and we agreed that night to collapse the SDP structure for the APC. He called me in the morning and we talked for about 40 minutes.

“I will not blame him because he has no second address. He romanced Ajayi and Jegede. He is moving about to take care of himself. He is not a man of integrity. “The 10 parties that endorsed Jegede do not have followers. They did not carry any of their members along.”

SDP Publicity Secretary Gbenga Fasua said: “We went round the state during our campaign and saw viable impact of Governor Akeredolu on the state.”

He said no member of the SDP defected to the PDP with the chairman.

Governor Akeredolu hailed Fasua for mobilising SDP members to support his re-election bid.

  • APC, PDP in final push for votes

APC, PDP in final push for votes

    By Emmanuel Oladesu, Deputy Editor

Major political parties are in the final leg of the campaign for votes ahead of Saturday’s Ondo State governorship election.

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu and All Progressives Congress (APC) party leaders will host the ground rally in Akure, the state capital today.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is leading members of the Campaign Council to the mega rally.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s campaign train will roll into Ondo town, where its Campaign Council Chairman, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, and other leaders will campaign for its standard bearer Eyitayo Jegede.

On Tuesday, the two candidates signed a peace pact at the instance of the National Peace Committee headed by former military Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, in a bid to foster a violence-free poll.

In the last three weeks, inter-party confrontations had peaked and campaigns marred with violence in Akure, Owo, Ijebu-Owo, Ipele and Akoko axis, with the APC and PDP trading blames.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, appealed to the candidates and other stakeholders to maintain decorum before, during and after the poll.

He said:”Unfortunately, the Ondo State governorship election holding this Saturday is generating its own tensions. The charged atmosphere demands that political parties and candidates should affirm, respect, support, promote and commit to peaceful elections which, I understand, are the five cardinal pillars on which the Peace Accord rests.”

As the two major parties intensify mobilisation, a cloud of uncertainty hovering over the alliance plans between the PDP and the Zenith Labour Party(ZLP), led by former Governor Olusegun Mimiko, has not fizzled out.

Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi, who is running on the platform of the ZLP, is considered as a weak contender by PDP governors and leaders, who have been pushing for the alliance, but without success.

A party source disclosed that despite their efforts to make PDP and ZLP embrace collaboration, “local combatants on the two sides” have consistently frustrated the move.

Although Rivers State Governor Wike, Makinde and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso had drummed support for the alliance, state leaders of the two opposition parties did not show enthusiasm.

“The idea of an alliance is not selling. It is the idea of forces outside Ondo State who mean well for the PDP. It is true that they suggested an alliance between the PDP and ZLP, but local combatants here are not disposed to it,” added the source.

According to the source, the aborted alliance meant that the Saturday election will be a two-horse race.

Addressing stakeholders on the importance of the exercise, Yakubu said INEC was fully prepared.

He said without peace, the agency’s deployment plans, new innovations in result management, the safety of personnel, security of materials and the credibility of elections will be undermined. Urging politicians and voters to be sensitive to the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic, Yakubu said public health will be jeopardised as observance of safety protocols will be impossibld in an atmosphere of disruption, violence and disorder.

He reiterated the commitment of the commission to a free and fair election, saying that the votes will count.

Yakubu urged the actors to abide by the letter and spirit of the peace accord by appealing to their supporters to maintain the peace.

He added:”I wish to note that some of the candidates contesting in the Governorship election holding this Saturday were also candidates in the last election held four years ago on 26th November 2016.

“You will recall that the election was free, fair and credible. You may also recall that it was perhaps the only Governorship election in the history of Ondo State since 2003 whose outcome was not challenged at the Election Petition Tribunal. This is in spite of the fact that three of the contestants were senior lawyers.

“With this record and the recent peaceful conduct of the Edo State Governorship election, I implore you all and your supporters to conduct yourselves peacefully and not lower the bar.”
