  • ‘How we will verify Ondo poll results’

    Our Reporter

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Yiaga Africa, has said it will deploy Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) methodology to verify results during Saturday’s governorship election.

Its Executive Director, Mr. Samson Itodo, said in a statement in Abuja that the group would also deploy 646 observers under its “Watching the Vote (WTV)” project to monitor the poll.

He said PVT is an election day observation methodology that leverages on statistics and technology to observe the processes of voting, counting and tallying of results.

“Citizen-observers are deployed to randomly sample polling units to collect data on the conduct of elections and official polling unit level results.

“With the results assembled from the sampled polling units, a citizen observer group can release projected estimates and verify the accuracy of results declared by the election management body.

“Using this methodology, observer reports are sent via SMS to a central database, which enables WTV to analyse and share timely findings on the conduct of the election in near real-time,” Itodo said.

He said Yiaga Africa would deploy 600 stationary observers in pairs to a representative statistical sample of 300 polling units, as well as 28 roving observers.

He added that 18 collation centre observers would be deployed in each of the 18 local governments.

Itodo said the deployment strategy would enable Yiaga Africa provide timely and accurate information on the conduct of accreditation, voting and counting as well as to independently verify official results.

    ‘No conspiracy can stop Akeredolu’

    By Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

A member of the Ondo State Governorship National Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has said no amount of conspiracy can stop Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu’s victory on Saturday.

He said the alliance of 11 “missionary” political parties will not stop Akeredolu from getting between 50 and 58 per cent votes at the polls.

Okechukwu, the director-general of Voice of Nigeria (VON), who addressed reporters on Tuesday in Abuja, said the governor was sure of victory, not only because of his incumbency advantage, but also because of his sterling performance in his first term.

He said the National Campaign Council of the party had made a fact-finding tour of Ondo State and its findings showed that Akeredolu performed well within the limited resources of the state, in the provision of infrastructures for the people across the three senatorial zones.

“The APC National Campaign Committee sent some of us to Ondo State for an on-the-spot assessment of our chances. We spent seven days mingling with people of all classes. Without being immodest, Aketi’s chances of winning the election hover between 55 and 58 per cent. “

“Infrastructure-wise, he has performed well in Akure, building roads, schools and hospitals among others. In road construction, he has completed 125 kilometres of roads and work is ongoing on 279 kilometres, to be completed in his second tenure. The Okitipupa road, which was in a deplorable state under previous governments, has been rehabilitated by the Akeredolu administration. He dualised the road in Akoko, Ondo South. He built roads in Irele. His target is to complete 700 kilometres of roads before the completion of his second tenure.

“He built Ore Bridge in Ondo South Senatorial District and the bridge not only serves the people of Ondo State and Southwest as a whole, it has also become a gateway to other parts of the country,” Okechukwu said.

He said in the industrial sector, Akeredolu established the Ore industrial park, and had attracted not fewer than 10 industries to Ondo State.

The APC chieftain said: “Akeredolu upgraded the University of Medical Sciences. He also built a teaching hospital and today, 15 of its courses have been accredited.

“In the health sector, he built primary health centres and two 200-bedded hospitals in Ondo and Akure. Added to his uncommon interest in the health sector is the Ondo State Health Insurance Scheme to guarantee adequate and affordable health care. He is also building a school of medical health.”

The statement by its President, Adebola Oni, said: “We have observed with shock and concern attacks on campaign trains of opposition parties by suspected thugs loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We had earlier noticed sparks of violence and attacks at Idanre in preparation for the recent local government poll, though with the belief that security agencies, particularly the police, would check the activities of the miscreants before the governorship election.

“It is shocking to observe that despite the obvious attacks on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate’s close shave with death during the attacks at Oba-Akoko in Akoko Southwest Local Government; nobody has been arrested by the police in connection with the attacks.”

Chairman of Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) in Ondo East Local Government Olamigoke Busayo has led several members of the party to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Olamigoke had resigned from the ZLP before leading some members to the APC.

He said they were moved to leave the ZLP because of the achievements of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the desire to belong to the mainstream of Ondo State politics.

Ondo State APC Chairman Ade Adetimehin said the ZLP fortunes have crumbled with the collapse of its structure in Ondo East.

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Anambra State governor Peter Obi have urged the electorate to vote for the PDP standard-bearer, Eyitayo Jegede, on Saturday.

Addressing the Igbo community in Ondo, they said a vote for PDP is a vote for peace, political progress and economic development, adding that voting in Jegede as the governor will result in an all-round development for the state.

They expressed confidence in Jegede’s ability to move Ondo State forward, noting that the PDP governorship candidate would draw from his legal and administrative experience to deliver good governance to the people.

Ten parties that fielded candidates for the governorship poll have collapsed their structures into the PDP.

They are Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance and AAC.

Speaking on behalf of the group, SDP Chairman Dele Ogunbameru said the decision to support Jegede is to ensure the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is defeated.

He said: “Parties participating in Saturday’s poll have resolved to back the PDP candidate, Jegede.

“We are committed to good governance, which we believe can only be offered by the PDP at this austere period.

“There is no gainsaying that the current political leadership in Ondo State can best be described as nothing but an antenna in the face of things.

“This collaboration is an organised effort to save Ondo State from political quagmire and undesirable socio-economic predicament of our people.

“The 10 party leaders have resolved to work as a team in tandem with the PDP well captured manifesto for the welfare, well-being and life more abundant for the good people of Ondo State.”

Appreciating the parties, PDP Chairman Fatai Adams hailed them for their decision to join the winning train, saying: “Your support is all we need to take Ondo State to a higher level and deliver it from shackles.”

Akeredolu threatens lawsuit over family’s interference allegation

    By Osagie Otabor, Akure

Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has vowed to institute a legal action against anybody who fails to show evidence of his wife and children doing consultancy jobs for his administration.

He said he was blessed to have a wife and children who could support him financially.

Opposition parties had been using the hashtag no to government of father, mother and son, to campaign against Akeredolu.

The governor spoke in Akure at a debate organised by the Face the Voter Initiative. He was responding to an allegation of running a government of father, mother and son.

Also present at the debate were candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Oyeleye Fasua and Eyitayo Jegede.

The PDP standard-bearer said the office of a governor is held in public trust and not for family members.

He said due process must be allowed and not for him to allow his wife and children do consultancy job for the government. But Fasua said his wife would be involved in his administration to avoid dying early.

On health care, Jegede said it was wrong to raise Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from health care, noting that the cost of accessing health care under Governor Akeredolu was out of the reach of the poor. But Akeredolu said he signed the health insurance into law to provide free health care.

He said anybody that has insurance card gets free health care, adding that he has built additional hospitals.

Fasua said he supported the health insurance, noting that he would do same if elected as governor, but Jegede argued that health insurance should not be the way to get free health care.

He wondered how many farmers had access to the insurance scheme.

Speaking about infrastructure, Jegede said there were no roads in Ese-Odo Ilara Mokin and Ilaje local governments, but Akeredolu said people now call him ‘Mr. Infrastructure’ because of the numerous roads he has built.

Akeredolu said the new industries at Ore had employed thousands of persons, adding that he revived the moribund Okitipupa Oil Industry. Jegede said he would attract industries to the state.

Fasua said he would introduce irrigation to ensure food security and teach Ondo farmers modern technology.

Ondo 2020: My ultimate goal is to connect Ondo to global economy, says Akeredolu

    Agency Reporter

The Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has hinted of plans to connect the Sunshine state to the global economy, as part of his agenda for the second term.

In a similar vein, the Deji of Akure and Paramount Ruler of Akure Kingdom, Oba Ogunlade Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi has described the governor as a noiseless achiever, saying “I never knew he could perform mertitoriously as he did despite the bogus debts he inherited from his predecessor.”

Oba Aladelusi also described Akeredolu as a man that is too frank and sincere for the political system that operates in Nigeria, adding that “a straightforward man like you can only be encouraged by what tomorrow will say about your today.”

Speaking when he played host to the governor and his campaign team in his palace on Tuesday, the monarch said Akeredolu has fulfilled his promises to the people of Akure kingdom, adding that “whoever says Governor Akeredolu has not performed, particularly in Akure would only be lying on what is visible.”

“When Governor Akeredolu assumed office amidst inherited debts running into billions, many people thought he wouldn’t perform. I wrote him off myself because he inherited a scaring debt. He inherited six months of unpaid salaries but today, he has almost completely paid all the arrears.

“I want to say without any fear or favour that our governor is too honest, frank and  straightforward for the Nigerian political environment. People like you only work for tomorrow, not today.

“Anyone that says Mr.Talk and Do didn’t perform in Akure is only lying. His work is all over the places. I never knew he could do much. But to my surprise, what he has done is even more than what those who met surplus did.

“Anyone that love Akure and believes in Akure, I will always love. Mr. Governor is the architect of modern Akure. Our hospital that has been long abandoned is now wearing a new look courtesy of this Talk and Do Governor. He’s almost dualising the whole of Akure. Aketi has done very well and he has appointed our people into government,” the monarch said.

In his remarks, Akeredolu said he didn’t join politics to maximise wealth but to show that not all political actors are liars, hence, his resolve to always do what is right, and not what is good.

“You have convinced me beyond any doubt, that you love this Akure. You made a case that for many years at the federal level, Akure has nothing. But today, we are happy that the minister from Ondo state is from Akure.

“We thank You. Akure is our state capital. And it is important that we work here. And we will do more. We have a college of medicine here. We are building a 500-bed hospital in Akure. Please support us to continue this work.

“By the grace of God, Akure will be connected to the global economy before I leave government. I want to prove that not all politicians are liars and I have proven that. I will never betray my belief. I will continue to do what is right, and not what is good. Like I do say, I want history to be kind to me.

“By the grace of God, Akure has been designed to be connected to global economy and we will do that. Akure airport is already designated as an international cargo airport. That will soon happen. We will construct Igbatoro road. Akure will be more modernised in our second term,” Akeredolu said.

In the entourage of the governor were the immediate past governor of Ogun State and Senator Representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Ibikunle Amosun, Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Donald Tayo Alasoadura, erudite lawyer, Niyi Akintola SAN, Director-General of the Akeredolu/Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation, Rt. Hon. Victor Olabimtan, among others.

No gang-up can stop Akeredolu’s victory on Saturday – Okechukwu

    By Jide Orintunsin, Abuja

A member of Ondo Governorship National Campaign Council of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON) Osita Okechukwu has assured no amount of gang-up can stop the victory of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu at the polls on Saturday.

He said the alliance of 11 “missionary” political parties will not stop the APC candidate from coasting home between 50 to 58 per cent votes.

Okechukwu, who spoke with newsmen in Abuja, said Akeredolu was sure of victory not only because of his incumbency poles advantage but going by his sterling performance in his first term.

“The alliance of missionary political parties, coming together few days to the election cannot stop Governor Akeredolu’s victory come Saturday. No amount of gang up can stop Aketi’s victory,” Okechuwku predicted.

Justifying his prediction, the VON boss said the National Campaign Council of the party had conducted a fact- finding tour of Ondo and its findings showed the Governor performed well within the limited resources in provision of physical infrastructure for the people, across the three senatorial zones in the state.

He explained Akeredolu’s achievements extended across his Ondo North senatorial district as well as that of his two co- contestants, Central Senatorial District of Eyitayo Jegede and Southern Senatorial District of Chief Agboola Ajayi, the Deputy Governor.

Okechukwu noted Ondo residents are yearning for more of infrastructural development stressing “the people of Ondo State would vote for the APC candidate to consolidate on the numerous gains made so far, in his first tenure through prudent management of scarce Ondo state resources.”

He assured Akeredolu has a firm structure on ground, having diligently reconciled with all the other gubernatorial aspirants in the APC, thus going into Saturday’s election with the spirit of internal democracy advantage.

“To be frank, without being immodest, Aketi’s chances of winning the election hover between 55-58 percent. Take this to the bank and please permit me to name some projects executed and the ongoing ones.

“Infrastructure wise, he (Aketi) has performed creditably well in Akure, building roads, schools and hospitals amongst others. In road construction, he has completed 125 kilometres of roads and work is ongoing on 279 kilometres, to be completed in his second tenure.

“The Okitipupa road which was in a deplorable state, under previous governments, has been fully rehabilitated by the Rotimi Akeredolu government. He dualised the road in Akoko, Ondo South. He built roads in Irele. His target is to complete 700 kilometres of roads before the completion of his second tenure.

“He built Ore Bridge in Ondo South senatorial district and that bridge not only serves the people of Ondo State and the South West as a whole, but has become a gateway to other parts of the country.”

In the industrial sector, Okechukwu noted Akeredolu established the Ore industrial park, and has attracted not less than 10 industries to Ondo State, comprising of both foreign and local investors.

“Methinks that Akeredolu and Ondo State will benefit more from Mr. President’s move to exploit the huge Bitumen deposit in the State. And the people are conscious of hooking up to federal center. They cherish the immense infrastructural investment Mr. President has bequeathed to South West, like modern standard gauge railways,” he said.

The APC chieftain said: “Akeredolu upgraded the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo State. He did not stop there. He built a teaching hospital and today, 15 of its courses have received accreditation. There is also the University in Okitipupa, upgraded by Akeredolu.

“In the health sector, he devoted much attention, built primary health centers and two 200-bedded hospitals in Ondo and Akure. Added to his uncommon interest in the health sector is the Ondo State Health Insurance scheme, to guarantee adequate and affordable healthcare in the State. He is also building a school of medical health.”
