  • Nicknames associated with Ajimobi

    Nicknames associated with Ajimobi

    By Gabriel Ogunjobi

    Former Oyo Senator Abiola Ajimobi died on Thursday after suspected COVID-19 complications.

    Tributes are pouring the late’s politician’s antecedents.

    While he was Governor, he was well-known with three of these nicknames.

    1. Constituted Authority

    You guessed right! That is indisputably the most popular nickname of the late politician.

    In reminiscence, Ajimobi had expressly pronounced himself ‘constituted authority’ in 2017 whilst students of the Oyo/Osun states’ jointly-owned Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho protested at Oyo Secretariat over the elongated lockdown of their institution as a result of nonpayment of lecturers.

    The former governor described himself the ‘constituted authority’ in accordance with the 1999 constitution although that infuriated the youths the more, a reason the name sticks till date.

    2. ‘Pe egun re’ 1

    Roughly translated, the Yoruba expressions means ‘Number One jinx-breaker’ or ‘record breaker’

    In the history of Oyo state, no politician had served as governor for two terms apart from Ajimobi.

    Christopher Alao-Akala, a close rival, was only a deputy governor under Chief Rashidi Ladoja and later served out the joint tenure after his boss was impeached.

    He went on to serve a full tenure of four years as governor.

    In the case of Ajimobi, he was elected governor on two occassions – in 2011 and 2015. This was found groundbreaking as Ibadan, the political headquarters and capital of the state in the agelong belief of never following one person more than once. It was Ajimobi that broke the jinx.

    3. The Builder

    In this political circle, supporters also excite him with eulogy as the builder of Modern Oyo.

    Indeed, Oyo rose to be an enviable economic hub during the eight years Ajimobi served, attracting foreign investors and giving facelift to the ancient state.

  • Seven safety tips during flooding season

    Seven safety tips during flooding season

    By Alao Abiodun

    As we gradually approach the full rainy season, it is no gainsaying that the effects of flooding on affected residents are unquantifiable and devastating.

    Sadly, the menace of flooding has rendered many people homeless.

    The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NHISA) had earlier warned many parts of the country are likely to experience flooding this year due to heavy downpour caused by climate change.

    In the past few weeks, persistent rainfall has sent Lagos and some other states into flooding crisis.

    Sadly, there was an unfortunate harvest of deaths in Lagos where two children- a 17-year-old girl, identified as Ayisat and four-year-old Azeezat- were swept away in a ravaging flood that hit the state and its environs after a torrential downpour.

    So, when there is a heavy rainfall, here are few tips to stay safe during a heavy downpour:

    1. When everywhere is flooded, do not walk through moving water. As little as 6 inches of moving water can make you fall.

    2. It’s very important that you do not swim or drive through flood waters. Turn around and stay safe first!

    3. It’s necessary that you stay off bridges over fast-moving water. Fast-moving water can wash bridges away without warning.

    READ ALSO: Eight safety tips during flooding season

    4. Most drivers don’t obey this but it’s very risky – you must not drive into flooded areas. If floodwaters rise around your car, abandon the car and move to higher ground if you can do so safely.

    5. Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.

    6. If your home is flooded, turn off your electricity when you return home. You should also stay away from downed power lines.

    7. Stop dumping dirt/refuse into the drainage system, this can cause blockage thus causing undeserved dangers leading to overflooding.

    Also, the government has enjoined all parents and guardians to ensure adequate safety of their children, wards and young adults by insisting, and restraining them indoors during rainfalls and away from after rain floodings.

    Things DJ Cuppy, Sharon Adeleke have in common

    By Chinyere Okoroafor

    Well, everyone knows or should know Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola aka DJ Cuppy. If you also do not know Sharon Adeleke aka Rona Wigs, then you should know the Adelekes– Davido’s family.

    So what do these two women have in common?

    Their fathers are stinking rich, yes, but that notwithstanding, they work and are really good at what they do. Now, these ladies have a couple of things to teach us about business and life in general:

    * Daddy’s money is not necessarily mine

    When asked in an interview why she was making wigs, Sharon replied: “Yes my daddy has his money but it is not my money. My daddy has his own money, Davido has his, I want to make mine.”

    It is quite accepted to see a rich kid live off trust funds and have an enormous social life. They do not necessarily have to work, I mean who has to work when the money is there, right?

    No. Here are two women, daughters of some of the richest men on the continent, slugging it out. Well not really slugging it out but the hustle is real baby.

    Sharon and Cuppy do it normal way, starting something sustaining the drive, making a name and creating a global brand.

    * Passion drives

    Anybody who follows Cuppy knows she loves her music production. She is crazy about what she does and takes time to do it right. No half-bakes for the eclectic DJ.

    Sharon gushes over her wigs like they are the new definition of bae. It is evident that she enjoys what she does and she has turned it into a business. They work their passion and make money from it like no (wo) man’s business.

    Their businesses show the depth of their dreams. This is not just mere working to show that they can work, no, this is a dream. You see this in the hands-on way Sharon handles Rona wigs. She uses social media to advertise herself and is fully involved in the entire wig-making process.

    And well, it’s not like Cuppy can give out the spin table to someone else to “help” her spin.

    * Know what you do

    Cuppy can hold a crowd’s rapt attention with her music. She remixes almost everything and puts the “DJ Cuppy” spin on it.

    You see her right there on stage making new sounds out of old songs. This is not just someone who can DJ, this is a lady who can spin.

    Sharon said: “I love making wigs and I am good at it”. Nuff said! These are not rich kids pretending to work , nah, these are Motherland Moguls who work! And there is no stopping them.

    * Playing the daddy card

    Well, it might not be your daddy but if someone around you has the fame and the money, make it count. We are not all children with rich dads even though we may know some.

    We cannot deny the massive boost that being Otedola’s daughter has given to DJ Cuppy or how being an Adeleke has and will influence Rona wigs. Sharon openly admits to having had a privileged life.

    Still, both women have something that could be watered. Yes, some people will get away with daddy’s money and position. But if Sharon and DJ Cuppy use “daddy’s” card, it’s to rake up the market, connect and build their brands.
