  • Five dangers of self-medication

    “Mum, my temperature is rising”.

“Go and take paracetamol,” would be the reply of a typical Nigerian mum.

Self Medication has actually done more harm than good in our society. It is an act of using substance without the supervision of a medical professional or practitioner. It is becoming common among youths who overdose of some drugs because they want to feel “high”.

Here are some dangers of self medication:

    DEATH

One of the dangers of self medication is death. Substances are made to work perfectly with the right dose but an overdose could actually become disastrous. For instance, overdose of sleeping pills could lead to sleeping irregularities and if not quickly wiped off from the system could lead to death.

    PSYCHOSIS

This refers to loss of contact with reality. Substances influence the way recipients behave. An overdose could actually lead to anxiety disorder or even depression. Some psychiatric patients are in this situation because of self medication.

    MALFUNCTIONING OF THE BODY SYSTEM

Self medication has harmful effects on health. At times, a patient may be under prescribed medication for different health issues, and self medicating may lead to adverse reactions to the body system.

    IT LEADS TO COMPLICATIONS
People tend to use pills as if they are using candies. What we do not realise is opting for self medication makes us prone to allergies, drug dependence , and even addiction and might leads to complications to the body system.

IT INCREASES THE POTENTIAL FOR DRUG ABUSE AND ADDICTION.

Physical dependence on medicines is part of the most serious health implications of self medication. Some medicines like antidepressants, stimulants and pain relievers can produce the same effect as illicit drugs especially when taken in increased quantities.

The Nigerian mentality is that once you are having a headache you need paracetamol but most times reverse is the case. This has led to addiction that people use paracetamol to cure headache or body pain.

Many have lost their lives to overdose of drugs that actually cause dizziness. The first step to eradicating self-medication is getting rid of the many drugs you keep at home. Buy only those prescribed by a physician. And like it is always written in the labels of drug, keep them away from children.

  • 10 habits of weak, unsuccessful people you should avoid

    1. They’re always distracted

Essentialism, by Greg McKeown, is one of my favorite books. McKeown shares the story of when he met his former classmate, years after graduating.

He told McKeown that he was in between jobs and asked if McKeown could help him. Twenty seconds into the conversation the guy got a text and started looking down to his phone and started responding.

McKeown says: “Ten seconds went by. Then twenty. I simply stood there as he continued to text away furiously.” After two minutes he gave up and walked away from the obsessive texter.

Don’t live your life in the future or past, lost in thoughts and worry. If that guy from the example was present, he might have got an awesome job recommendation from Greg McKeown.

    2. They only talk the talk

You know what’s better than talking about something? Doing it.

In 2010, Derek Sivers gave a TED talk called ” Keep your goals to yourself,” where he presented scientific evidence that talking about your goals is counterproductive.

We see it all the time in real life and on social media: “I’m training for a marathon.” “I’m starting a business.”

The crazy thing is how people react. They applaud you for announcing something. Let’s pause for a second: Saying you want to run a marathon and actually running a marathon are two different things, right?

In your brain, those things are actually not that far apart. Derek Sivers says:

“When you tell someone your goal and they acknowledge it, psychologists have found that it’s called a ‘social reality.’ The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it’s already done. And then because you’ve felt that satisfaction, you’re less motivated to do the actual hard work necessary.”

Be someone that does things, not someone who talks about things.

    3. They spend time with losers

Spend enough time with losers, and you’ll become one. Apply this analogy to any type of person.

Do you want to get fit? Hang out with fit people. People feed off each other’s energy.

What’s better, your friend asking when you’re going to the gym, or your friend asking to go out for the third time that week?

    4. They hate everything

They especially hate people that are doing well. Why can’t you be happy for other people? Don’t worry, you won’t be a Pollyanna. You can still be cool and be positive.

Give people some love, it won’t kill you. Unsuccessful people even hate things that just “are.”

“Ugh, it rained this morning, and my hair got all messed up. I hate rain.” Common, really?

Having a bad day is okay — everyone gets irritable once in a while. But if you always hate everything, you’ll have a bad life.

    5. They procrastinate

What’s the benefit of putting things off? I once asked my college professor to extend a deadline for an essay.

He said: “I’m perfectly happy to extend your deadline by a week. The only thing I’m asking you is will your essay be better if you hand it in a week from now?”

My answer was “no,” so I worked my ass off to finish it on time. Only delay things when you’ll do a better job later.

What’s the point of delaying something if you get the same outcome? Do it now, or do it better later.

    6. They don’t listen to others

Unsuccessful people love themselves. To be honest, we all love ourselves, but if you’re unsuccessful, you ONLY love yourself.

We listen to others because we care about them. How else can you show you care? Everyone can give a hug, but not everybody calls you just to ask “How are you?” Ask, listen, care, repeat.

    7. They’re lazy

Never feel like doing anything? We’ve all been there: Not feeling like going to dinner with your partner, or not feeling like buying an awesome present for your mother’s birthday. Let’s face it, it’s all because you’re lazy.

Be a sport and get off your couch — participate with your family, friends, partner. The beauty of life lies in new and novel experiences.

When you’re lazy, you don’t even give yourself a chance to experience new things. It’s also not fair to the people in your life.

    8. They don’t learn

Learning is one of the most difficult things in the world. It’s not a surprise many people never read a book, never finish school, or never learn from their mistakes. Learning is a struggle.

But think about it: We live in the most exciting time in history for learners. The access to information has never been this easy. In the past, if your dad was a farmer, you became a farmer. Things were like that.

Now, you can be anything you wish — you just need to learn how to do it.

    9. They are not nice

Somehow, people think it’s cool to be a jerk. Honestly, it’s way cooler to be nice. You don’t have to be a Buddhist Monk or anything, just be a nice person.

Try it sometime; you might make a few new friends. And if you have difficulty defining what a “nice person” is, you’re likely a jerk.

    10. They are quitters

I saved the worst for last. If there’s one thing you take away from this article, I hope it’s this:

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”  — Thomas A. Edison

There’s nothing I can add to that. Actually, there is: never give up.

  • Five critical steps to take before a job interview

There are certain critical steps to take before a job interview that can significantly increase the chances of a job seeker’s success. Here are five of such critical steps to take before a job interview.

Ensure you understand the job requirements

It is easier to excel in a job interview when you understand what you are interviewing for. By truly understanding what is needed and wanted on the job, it will be easier for you to position yourself as a great fit for the position.

    Research about the company

This is a critical part of your interview preparation, it can help prepare you to answer interview questions and also help provide you with questions to ask the interviewer about the company. Aside from helping you ace the interview, researching about the company can also help you find out if the company and its culture will be a good fit for you.

    Have a mock interview

Taking time to practice answering interview questions in a mock interview can help boost your confidence, help calm your nerves and make it much easier for you to answer interview questions. Try to conduct the mock interview in the same format as the real interview, take everything as seriously as you would a real interview. You can ask experienced person or a friend or family member to review common job interview questions and answers with you, and critique how you will respond to them, as well as suggest changes you can make for a better delivery.

Read Aslo: Five things you shouldn’t wear to a job interview

    Be prepared

There is nothing that can disorient an interview candidate like unpreparedness. It has a way of disarming and crippling the confidence of an interviewee. Therefore, it is important to be well prepared for a job interview. You should ensure that your full portfolio is ready with extra copies of documents, just in case. Also, ensure that what you intend to wear for the interview is well dry-cleaned and ready to wear a day or two before the interview. In addition, decide on what to do with your hair and facial outlook, and ensure it conforms to interview norms. Finally, and most importantly, be very clear about how to get to the venue of the interview (if you are not familiar with the place). Ensure you have a transportation plan in place to get you to the right venue on time.

Pay attention to your interview etiquette

You should practice this in your mock interviews, so it becomes a part of you. This way, it will be much easier to do during the interview. Interview etiquette is very important because it helps an interviewee make a positive impression on the hiring manager.

  • PLANTING TREES TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE

The consequence of climate change is manifesting in various parts of the globe in different ravaging forms. But in northern Nigeria, a region of vast arable land, capable of feeding the entire country with sufficient left to export, the grill of mother-nature is felt as drought and desert encroachment, a result of indiscriminate deforestation.

Scientists claim that the Sahara Desert, the largest hot desert in the world, is advancing southward at a rate of 0.6 Kilometers per annum, causing Nigeria to lose 35,000 hectares of its arable land annually in the north.

In his 2015 paper, Olagunju Ebenezer of the Ecology and Environmental Biology Unit, University of Ibadan, asserts that Nigeria is faced with rapid desert encroachment with 63.83 percent of the country’s land area already impinged on by desertification.

15 northernmost states are affected by desert encroachment from moderate to severe rate, with Sokoto and Kebbi dangerously on the frontlines of the rampage owing to their location.

Worried, however, about the devastating effects which has accompanied desert encroachment into Sokoto, in terms of threat to food security and socio-economic stability, a youth community development group named Tree Planting Ambassadors (TPA), have resolved to planting weather-resistant trees across the state, and creating awareness within the community about the need for afforestation.

Founded in 2017, TPA is an extraction of a much larger youth group, Environmental Conservation Club, peopled by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Sokoto State, as well as primary and high school students who are interested in volunteering for the movement.

“Our sole aim is to reforest Sokoto State,” says Ayuba Esther, 28, the first female president of the group. “This we have been doing through grassroot campaigns, educating the people of Sokoto about the effects of deforestation, and by embarking on massive tree planting projects in remote communities across the state.”

Esther explains that since she resumed office as president of the group earlier this year, TPA has planted over 500 seedlings, and plans are underway to plant 300 more seedlings in a couple of weeks.

“In the next couple of weeks, on August 17, we are going to Tunga village, one of the remote communities around the main campus of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto. And subsequently on August 22 and 24, we shall be visiting Sokoto State University and NYSC camp in Wamakko, respectively, to plant 300 seedlings,” she says passionately, filled with hope.

Esther also attributed the reason for prioritizing such trees as Neem tree, flame of the forest, Step tree, Almond tree, to their resistance to extreme weather conditions.

“Considering the extreme weather, some trees may not last long, so while selecting trees to plant, we often give priority to those that can survive the harsh environmental conditions in Sokoto, and viable enough to help achieve our sustainable development goals and combating climate change,” she explains.

Although TPA gets its funds from NGOs with same goals and objectives, philanthropists in the communities interested in the activities of the group, Esther laments that one of the major challenges of the group is inadequate funding to execute its projects. She also highlights a number of other obstacles that the group is facing which include shortage of sensitized members in the group, and the cutting down of some of their trees by community member to be used as firewood.

“We are facing a lot of challenges,” whines Ester. “Most corp members posted to this group have little or no knowledge on climate change and the importance of tree planting in combating climate change. Also, as a group established under the NYSC, there are limits to what we can do since we’re not independent. Worse still, we would wake up at times to see the trees we have planted being cut down by members of the community, justifying their actions with their dire need for firewood to cook.”

As the first female president of the group, Esther however noted that she faces no gender-based discrimination from members of her group or anyone. “Because they are always ready and available whenever I place a call to them,” she says.

  • Things you should know about Sowore’s ‘#RevolutionNow’ movement

Youths and facilitators under the auspices of the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria on Monday, August 4, defied threats of security agencies to hold the ‘Revolution Now’ protest in four states of the country and Abuja

States where the Revolution protests took place are; Lagos, Osun, Ondo and Cross River.

It would be recalled that on Saturday, August 3, the State Security Service arrested the publisher of popular media organisation Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore.

The SSS said Sowore was arrested for calling for revolution against the present administration.

Sowore who contested for presidency in the 2019 general election in series of recent video clips decried the governance pattern of the present administration.

    Revolution Now

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police also warned that Revolution Now protesters would be made to face the wrath of the law.

Despite the threats, several Civil Society Organizations (CSO) maintained a ‘no-going-back’ stance despite Sowore being in detention and the warning from police.

The protesters said their demands had been broken down into three phases, each of which contains issues that must be addressed.

The three phases are as follows:

    * First phase: End anti-people economic policies

    * Second phase: End special privileges for the ruling class

    * Third phase: Return political power and national wealth to the working people

    * No devaluation of the Naira.

    * End to the insecurity and constant bloodletting in the country

    * Abolition of tuition fees in all public universities and secondary schools.

    * Immediate payment of the N30,000 minimum wage

    * The immediate release of all political prisoners, including Shi’ite leader Ibrahim El-Zakzaky and his wife

    * The immediate payment of all outstanding salaries of workers and pensions of retirees.

Second phase – End Special Privileges for the Ruling Class:

    * All public officials must be banned from educating their children in private schools in Nigeria or in schools in foreign countries.

    * These officials must be banned also from obtaining healthcare in private hospitals in Nigeria or in hospitals in foreign countries.

    * An immediate end to the use of police or military personnel as private security guards for these officials.

    * Except for the president and governors, these officials and their immediate family must not live in class-exclusive estates

Third phase – Return Political Power and National Wealth to the Working People:

    * The complete and uncompensated repossession by the working people of all national resources stolen by the ruling class

    * The complete and uncompensated seizure by the working people of all private wealth accumulated by public officials during and after their tenure of service.

    * The complete socialisation of all land in the country and declaration of access to land as a basic right.

    * To break the stranglehold of the ruling class on political power by banning from politics all who have stolen the people’s money and property since 1960.

    * To reduce the cost of governance by abolishing the Senate, thus establishing a uni-cameral legislature with only the House of Representatives.

    * Abolishing the death penalty except for the embezzling or privatisation of the public wealth.

    * Producing a new constitution for Nigeria by a democratic and people-led process involving open discussion, debate, and determination of proposals and suggestions by the working people.

  • Why you should have Honey at home

Why you should have Honey at home

Honey has been known throughout history as “Liquid Gold,” a natural sweetener that is not just delicious but provides many therapeutic benefits. Although it is a versatile cooking ingredient, honey could also offer some health benefits.

If you’ve not been taking full advantage of the nutritional and medicinal properties of honey, you need to do so!.
You are, therefore, advised to get a bottle of honey stored up in your room somewhere, today because it has lots of amazing benefits you never knew!

    1. Honey Reduces Cough!

Honey may prove to be a lifesaver during this cold season. According to a study in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, researchers tested a single nighttime dose of buckwheat honey against a common cough suppressant and no treatment at all in more than 100 children with colds. Overall, parents found that the honey was better than the other two approaches for relieving cough symptoms and improving sleep.

No wonder the World Health Organization lists honey as a potential demulcent, a sugary liquid that coats the throat and soothes irritation. A 2007 study by Penn State College of Medicine suggested that it reduced nighttime coughing and improved sleep quality in children with upper respiratory infection better than the cough medicine dextromethorphan or no treatment.

          2. Honey heals wounds!

Shocking, isn’t it? Applying honey to the skin has been used to heal wounds and burns since ancient Egypt, and is still being used today.

In-depth research studies on honey and wound care were evaluated and the review found that it is most effective at healing partial thickness burns and wounds that have become infected after surgery.

It is also an effective treatment for diabetic foot ulcers, which are very serious complications and can lead to amputation.

One study reported a 43.3% success rate with honey as a wound treatment. In another study, topical honey healed a whopping 97% of patients being treated for their diabetic ulcers.

Similarly, researchers believe that its healing powers come from its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as its ability to nourish the surrounding tissue.

        3. Honey Boosts Memory!

We are what we eat and hence it is very important to consume foods that help make our mental health strong to sustain in old age. One of its numerous health benefits includes its ability in boosting memory and concentration.

Honey not only increases brain power and memory but also makes you a healthier person altogether. Consumption of honey prevents metabolic stress and helps calm and soothes the brain, which helps in augmenting memory in the long run. The natural antioxidants and therapeutic properties in honey help in boosting brains’ cholinergic system and circulation and receding cells that cause memory loss.

         4. Honey helps digestion!

Honey helps reduce constipation, bloating and gas, thanks to it being a mild laxative. Honey is also rich in probiotic or “friendly” bacteria such as bifidobacteria and lactobacilli, which aid in digestion, promote the health of the immune system, and reduce allergies.

Using it in place of table sugar has been found to reduce the toxic effects in the gut of mycotoxins produced by fungi.

    5.   Honey Cures Acne!

Honey is a popular home remedy for acne. It’s often combined with other natural ingredients such as cinnamon,
nutmeg, lemon, and avocado to make acne face masks.

There are a lot of anecdotal reports from people who have successfully used honey in the treatment of acne, but actual scientific studies that examine its effectiveness when used on acne patients are currently lacking.

However, we do know that this natural ingredient has antibacterial activity, and studies have shown that it can kill a wide range of bacteria. This is currently thought to be a result of the hydrogen peroxide that is present in the honey and a protein called bee-defensin-1 which is added to the nectar when it’s in the bee’s stomach.

Studies have shown that it is capable of killing the acne-causing bacteria. Due to its high level of antibacterial activity, using honey for acne treatment has become popular in the natural skin care community.

Honey also has anti-inflammatory properties which could be useful in the treatment of an inflammatory condition like acne.

The health benefits of Honey are endless and amazing, new research and studies keep coming up with more benefits of Honey!

Do well to get yourself a bottle of honey today.

  • Eight things you should never discuss with your coworkers

    By Praise Olowe

Hitting it off with a person from work could be really great. However, as great as it may seem, it is also important to know that it comes with a set of disadvantages and there are things you’ll need to keep in mind whenever you get in a relationship with a coworker.

Now, don’t get it wrong, it is understandable that many people spend more time around their co-workers than their actual friends and families. So it makes sense that they would want to talk about something other than work once in a while.

But no matter how close you are with a colleague, there are just certain details you should not discuss.

Your sexual history: You do not have to share the romantic encounters you have. There is entirely no reason for anyone to know what goes on between you and your partner or partners. This topic can cause your coworkers to feel uneasy around you.

Your job performance reviews and reports: Discussing this can make some colleague feel envious of you especially when your boss thinks you are doing very well. Be careful about such topics

Intimate details about your personal relationship: Keep your work and personal lives separate. Indulging yourself by talking to a coworker about your boyfriend’s bad fashion sense or that party you went to last night with a friend can make you seem unfocused and irresponsible to coworkers. The things you say about your personal life at work can quickly turn into office gossip.

Complaints about your Co-workers or boss: One of the things that you and your coworkers may have in common is a mutual disdain for your boss or some part of your job. While this may be a shared interest, discussing it with coworkers may not be in your best interest. It is normal to feel the need to vent your frustration to a work bud about something your boss or co-worker did that really pissed you off, but it’s never really worth it. Office gossip spreads like wildfire, and what you say to one person can easily get around to all. Be careful.

Read Also: Five things you shouldn’t wear to a job interview

Problems with your spouse, children or family at large: Every so often you may fight with your parents or your siblings or spouse. No one needs to know the gory details of your family’s petty squabbles. Stay silent on this. Discussing problems you are having with family members may cause others, including your boss, to wonder if these difficulties will distract you from doing your job. Even if you know these issues won’t affect your work, they don’t. It is safe to avoid having this discussion with coworkers.

How much you hated your last jobs: “Even if someone had a truly horrifying experience in their previous industry or job, they should still be able to talk about their past employers in a positive way. If they rant about how much they hated their last job, this could make it seem like the employee doesn’t take responsibility for his or her own actions. It shows a sign of immaturity when they can’t at least share what was learned from the experience instead of placing blame on others.” ― Jason Carney

How the job hunt is going: It is best not to talk about your interests in seeking employment elsewhere unless you are okay with your colleagues finding out. This is not to say you shouldn’t seek employment elsewhere. It’s best not to share your exit strategy with others, aside from perhaps your boss once you are sure you will be leaving. It opens the door for others to develop their own perceptions of your intentions, leading to anything from sabotaging your efforts to gossiping about your future plans.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges and demanded a trial by jury. The singer was assigned an attorney and was billed to appear in court on June 23, 2017.
