  • Sweden proposes tribunal to try ISIS fighters

The Swedish government has proposed the establishment of an international tribunal to prosecute ISIS fighters for the crimes they committed in Iraq and Syria.

Sweden’s Interior Minister Mikael Damberg visited London and The Netherlands to lobby for the Swedish initiative, which would be modelled after similar tribunals that were set up after the 1994 Rwandan genocide and the wars in the former Yugoslavia.

An Iraq-based tribunal would mean easier access to witnesses, evidence, and crime scenes, according to Damberg. Kurdish troops have detained roughly 100 Swedish citizens who joined ISIS and want to deport them to their countries of origin.

Sweden is expected to hold a European summit in June to address the situation and are expecting the UK, France, and The Netherlands to participate.

The United Nations holds ISIL responsible for human rights abuses and war crimes. ISIS also committed ethnic cleansing on a historic scale in northern Iraq. ISIS is widely known for its videos of beheadings and other types of executions of both soldiers and civilians, its destruction of cultural heritage sites, and the sexual enslavement of non-Muslim women and girls in both Syria and Iraq.

  • What you should know about US visa application for Nigerians

With the United State now suspending the Dropbox Visa renewal for Nigerian applicants and announcing that every applicant must appear at the location they specified when applying for the visa renewal, this is what you need to know about the process and how to go about it.

    Types of the US Visas

The US has two most common Non-immigrant Visas (Visitor Visas) for the United States are the Tourism (B-2) and Business (B-1) visas.

For validity, the B-2 Visitor Visa allows the holder to stay in the United States for up to six months at a time. The validity of the visa is usually about two years.

While for the B-1 Temporary Business Visitor, You may be eligible for a B-1 visa if you will be participating in business activities of a commercial or professional nature in the United States, including, but not limited to: Consulting with business associates, Travelling for a scientific, educational, professional or business convention, or a conference on specific dates, Settling an estate, Negotiating a contract, etc.

So what’s the new rule now?

According to the US in a statement, announcing the indefinite suspension of the Dropbox visa, said that if you want to renew your visa as a Nigerian, the “Dropbox” process would no longer apply, unless of course, you are a diplomatic or government official.

The Statement read “Dropbox” is the fancy name given to the process of simply renewing your visa by sending your application via courier or DHL to the embassy, where it is then processed and a new one re-issued.

“Effective at the close of business today, Tuesday, May 14, 2019, the US Mission to Nigeria is indefinitely suspending interview waivers for renewals, otherwise known as the ‘Dropbox’ process”, the US Embassy in Nigeria announced in a press statement.

The statement further reads: “Visa applications will no longer be accepted by DHL in Nigeria. Those who have already submitted their passports via Dropbox to DHL for processing either at the US Embassy in Abuja or the Consulate General in Lagos, will not be impacted by this change.

“All applicants in Nigeria seeking a non-immigrant visa to the United States must apply online and will be required to appear in person at the US Embassy in Abuja or US Consulate General in Lagos to submit their application for review. Applicants must appear at the location they specified when applying for the visa renewal.

“Processing of diplomatic and official (A, G, and NATO class) visa applications will continue unchanged.”

US Visa Requirements still remain the same

    • An original Nigerian passport that has two blank pages for visa and entry stamps and is valid for at least six months beyond your return date.

  • Eight ways to spot a lie

Spotting a lie when you are interrogating someone, a stranger is talking to you or even when a friend is telling you something is not really easy to know. It requires paying much attention, reading in between the lines to be able to read individuals and uncover hidden truths.

Here are the ways that can help you tell when for example job candidates, negotiating partners, love partner or major business executives are being deceptive.

    1. Build rapport: Experience shows that calm persons typically get better results than quick and tempered persons.

If you hope to know the truth, come across as empathetic in conversation, and you’ll get the person to open up more than when you are cold and accusatory.

    1. Surprise them: A deceptive person will try to anticipate your questions, so that their answers sound instinctive and natural. They may even practice answering specific questions ahead of time.

Ask them something they don’t expect, and they’ll stumble.

    1. Listen more than you speak. Liars tend to speak more than truthful people in an attempt to sound legitimate and win over their audience. They will also use more complex sentences to hide the truth. Be wary of the following:
    • Stress usually makes people speak faster.
    • Stressed persons often talk louder.
    • Cracking in the natural tone of voice usually occurs at the point of deception.
    • Repetitive coughing and clearing the throat are signs of tension.

This is not to say that a conversation partner who does one or more of the above is lying to you. But if you witness these actions, proceed with caution.

    1. Pay attention to how they say “No.”

“No” is a key word to observe if you suspect someone is trying to mislead you. A person is often demonstrating deceptive behavior when they:

    • Say “no” and look in a different direction.
    • Say “no” and close their eyes;
    • Say “no” after hesitating;
    • Say “noooooooo,” stretched over a long period of time;
    • Say “no” in a singsong manner.

    1. Watch for changes in behavior: A subtle change in a person’s carriage can be a strong sign of deception. Be careful if a person:
    • Exhibits lapses in memory at critical times (despite being alert in earlier conversation);
    • Answers questions with very short answers, refusing to provide details;
    • Begins speaking more formally (this is a sign the person is getting stressed);
    • Uses extreme superlatives or exaggerated responses (everything is “awesome” or “brilliant” instead of good).
    1. Ask for the story backward: Truthful people tend to add details and remember more facts as they repeat their story. Liars, on the other hand, memorize their stories and try to keep them the same.

If they add details, they often don’t add up. If you suspect someone is being deceptive, ask the person to recall events backward rather than forward in time.

PDP, Atiku to tribunal: Buhari lied about academic credentials

For example, start at the end of a story and ask them to explain what happened right before that point. And then, before that and so on.

For truthful people, this makes recall easier. Liars often simplify the story to avoid contradicting themselves.

    1. Beware of too many compliments: Don’t get me wrong, there are genuinely nice people in the world. But watch out if someone is trying too hard to make a good impression.

Agreeing with all of your opinions, constantly offering praise, and laughing at all of your jokes are signs that one lacks authenticity and sincerity.

    1. Ask follow up questions: Of course, none of us want to be lied to. But it’s important to remember that people are uneasy with certain questions due to personal embarrassment, or because they are extremely dependent on the outcome of the conversation.

For example, a job interview candidate might be tempted to hide details about getting fired from a previous job. But if the person is qualified, has a great personality, and would fit great with your company, shouldn’t you keep the conversation going?

If you’re puzzled by a response, explore with follow-up questions. In the situation mentioned above, you might move the conversation forward in this way: “You know, I (or a friend/family member) once lost a job for making a really stupid mistake. Have you ever experienced anything like that? How do you think mistakes on the job should be handled?”

When in doubt, continue to ask discerning questions. In time, you’ll be able to spot deceit like a pro.

  • 11 ways to plan for a blind date

Blind date can be so unnerving even for the confident ones. Basically, you just want to hook up with the person you haven’t met before.

Few things strike terror into the hearts of men so much. What is the person going to look like? Are you both going vibe together?  What if it’s a total disaster?

Here are some few pointers on how you can survive a blind date,

    START WITH A PHONE CALL

Before going on a blind date, it is important to talk to your date  on phone, listen to her voice, get more details about your date, make plans about the date, ask her about her background  and what interests her so much, so when you go on that first date, though it’s blind, it’s not in the dark

    BE  POSITIVE

Nobody like a curmudgeon, stay positive. Set your expectations to be neutral. Don’t be too negative or assume you are about to embark on a worst case scenario. If you keep thinking then the outcome would surely turn up to be a bad one, so when going for a blind date has a positive mindset.

Give yourself and you’re a chance to have fun and enjoy each others’ company .Even if the date doesn’t end up in a romantic relationship, the both of you might end becoming tight friends which is also a good thing.

    DON’T BE TOO ANXIOUS

Don’t be too full of disquietude when going for a blind date, Anxiety kills your self- esteem and questions might begin to pop up in your mind which can lead to negativity. It is okay if you are nervous or anxious but it should be at a minimal level. Build up confidence and set out for your date. The outcome result would be positive.

WEAR SOMETHING SMART AND LOOK MODERATE

Remember, you’re meeting someone you don’t know or seen before. If you’re overdressed or under-dressed, you’ll make him or her feel uncomfortable. What you should target is that your date should notice you that you’ve made effort to look presentable.

If you’re a woman, don’t go for any outfit that makes you feel conscious. That means skip the 6-inches which might make you stumble or prevent you from taking a comfortable walk alongside your date as well as the tiny dress that you need to pull down and adjust every few minutes.

If you’re a guy, avoid overly causal clothes. You can still wear something that looks great and feels comfortable without going the t-shirt and thongs route. The most important thing is that you wear something appropriate for a first date.

BE YOURSELF, DON’T FORM WHAT YOU ARE NOT

If you find your date very attractive, there’s no need to form be yourself don’t embellish any stories about yourself or even brag about yourself just so you can impress him or her. Fine you want your date to find you appealing in return but being fake or feeling arrogant isn’t the way to do that.

This might just cause your date to feel intimidated or see you as someone who is proud and up yourself.be warm and interesting but above all adopt the code which states “BE YOURSElf”

It’s good to talk about your accomplishments or success in life, in as much as it is appropriate to the conversation and was not brought up to brag about yourself.

CHOOSE A SUITABLE PLACE FOR THE DATE

This is a blind date and so you don’t want to be stuck in an upscale restaurant for a full course dinner with someone who might turn out to be not your type.

If your taste is not the coffee shops and parks, arrange to meet in a place where you’re sure you will have a swell good time. That way, it can be by the sea shore, or anywhere that is pleasant.

    ALWAYS TAKE ENOUGH CASH

You don’t know the kind of person you want to meet but it is advisable that you take your own cash when going for a blind date to be on a safer side. Who knows your partner might fuck up and just escape and leave you alone to sort the bills. Just play safe.

    LISTEN ADEQUATELTY AND CAREFULLY;

Some people just want to talk about yourselves. Use this opportunity to learn about your date if he/she is worthy to be in a relationship with. Every person has a story to tell. You may be missing an epic tale if you’re too busy talking about yourself. In the case of you listening you might not understand something so just ask questions to be clear about it.

    CREATE A SENSE OF HUMOR

Laughter is the best medicine for a blind date, just make the place lively. Say things that are funny but not stupid. Ensure the date is not a dull one, make the date a memorable that he/she would even want to request for a second time.

    PREPARE YOUR OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS:

You don’t want to appear like you’re cross- examining your date. If you’re a naturally curious person, then stick to open-ended questions. That way, you’re leaving the door open for your date to tell you more about himself/herself.

    AVOID BEING JUDGEMENTAL

Love, at first sight, is great but don’t be too quick to dismiss someone if you don’t feel an instant connection.

You may find that your impression of your date a second time around is quite different to the first, and much better. Try to keep an open mind and don’t be too critical.

Go to their website, check their LinkedIn account, link up with employees working there and check their Facebook page as well as company reviews. In short, dig deep and know all there is to know.

    ANTICIPATE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

  • Seven ways to survive a plane crash

Many people believe that plane crashed are catastrophic and not survivable events. This has made them accept they cannot do anything when such disasters loon.  But almost 95% of airplane crashes have survivors. So even if the worst does happen, your odds aren’t as bad as you might think. You can learn to prepare for each flight safety, stay calm during the crash itself, and survive the aftermath.

1  Sit in the tail of the aircraft.

Passengers in the tail of the aircraft have 40% higher survival rates than those in the first few rows in the event of a crash. Because a quick escape gives you the best chance for survival, it’s best to get seats as close as possible to an exit, on the aisle and in the back of the plane.

    2.  Keep your seat belt on at all times.

Every centimeter of slack in your seat belt triples the G-Force you’ll experience in the crash, so keep your seat belt properly tightened at all times you’re on the aircraft.

Push the belt down as low over your pelvis as possible. You should be able to feel the upper ridge of the pelvis above the upper edge of the belt, which helps to brace you in an emergency much better than your soft stomach.

    3.   Adopt the brace position

There’s no way that curling up in a ball would help you survive in a plane crash. but research has shown that brace positions do indeed help reduce the chances of survival in an emergency crash landing. The positions help reduce the velocity of your head when it inevitably slams into the seat in front of you. Moreover, they help minimize limb flailing.

Also, make sure your seat belt is securely fastened, low and tight over your lap, those bad boys (seat belts)are designed to withstand 3,000 pounds of force, which is about three times as much as your body could handle without passing. Trust them.

    4.  Read the safety card and listen to the flight attendants.

Another thing you can do to overcome the Normalcy Bias is to read through the safety card as well as listen to the flight attendants when they give their pre-flight safety spiel. Just because you’ve amassed enough frequent flier miles to circumnavigate the globe 1,000 times, you’re definitely not off the hook. You may think you’re justifiably confident, but you’re probably complacent; in a report published a few years ago, the FAA found that frequent fliers were the least informed on what to do and most susceptible to the normalcy bias in the event of a plane crash.

Re-reading the safety card will remind you where the nearest exits are and what to do during a crash landing. As you read through the safety guidelines, formulate your action plan.

    5. Protect yourself from smoke

Fire and smoke are responsible for the largest percentage of crash fatalities. The smoke in an airplane fire can be very thick and highly toxic, so cover your nose and mouth with a cloth to avoid breathing it in. If possible, moisten the cloth to provide extra protection.

Stay low as you escape, to duck under the level of smoke. It might not seem like a big deal, but passing out due to smoke inhalation is one of the most dangerous things that can happen during this critical period.

    6.   Dress comfortably.

You’ll need to be able to stay warm if you survive a crash. Even if that is not a consideration, the more of your body is covered during impact, the less likely you are to receive serious injuries or burns. Wear long pants, a long-sleeve t-shirt, and sturdy, comfortable, lace-up shoes.

Loose or elaborate clothing poses a risk, as it can get snagged on obstacles in the close confines of a plane. If you know you’re going to be flying over cold areas, dress appropriately and consider keeping a jacket on your lap.

Cotton or wool clothing is also preferable as it is less flammable. Wool is preferable to cotton when flying over water, as wool does not lose its insulating properties to the degree cotton does when wet.

    7.   Pray

Prayer is the master key. Above all precautions this is a very important aspect of prayer, pray before entering the plane, pray when the plane is about to take off. Do not underestimate the power of prayer, you should pray based on your religion, the paramount thing is that you should just pray.

  • Force-feeding Babies: A Dangerous Practice

Feeding babies forcefully is a widespread childcare practice in Africa, particularly in Yoruba land.

The desire to feed children forces women to engage in forced feeding. The practice is learnt by mostly females through socialization process, and practised as an expected role of a responsible mother.

It is passed from generation to generation and done mostly by the elderly.

In Nigeria particularly, it is common to see young women and their mothers-in-law quarrel over force-feeding of their babies.

While the younger women feel irritated by the practice, the elderly believe it must be done to avoid starving the babies.

Analysts note that cereals, milk and other beverages are mostly force-fed on babies by their grandmothers especially when they are ill and lose appetite or when the grandmothers mistake the babies’ slim stature to be as a result of not feeding well.

Though well-intended by mothers, nannies and other care givers, only a few, however, know it is dangerous.

Medical experts warn that force-feeding is a dangerous experiment that contributes to infant mortality and can lead to litigation.

A Paediatric Neurologist, Dr Okunola Olusola from the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, describes force-feeding as dangerous and foolish.

According to him, force-feeding compels a child to use his mouth to breath, cry and eat at the same time.

He warns that any mother doing so may kill the child.

“At the back of the throat, the pipe going to the lungs (trachea) and the pipe going to the abdomen (esophagus) cannot be open at the same time; the esophagus is supposed to receive food while the trachea is supposed to receive air.

“Now, the child is forced to do both at the same time because somebody wants the child to eat. The risk is that there is a tendency that, in an attempt to breath, the child will also be swallowing at the same time.

“Normally, there is a cover for the trachea when we want to swallow because the trachea – the air pipe or wind pipe as it is called – is in front. The esophagus is at the back, something covers the wind pipe so that food does not enter into the wind pipe.

“Now there is a risk of food entering into it and because the child is a baby, who cannot coordinate everything well, the child will choke as food can enter into the wind pipe.

“When food like pap enters into that kind of place, it is like cementing the pipe, thereby preventing air from entering; so the child dies of asphyxiation,’’ the expert explains.

The doctor says asphyxiation is like drowning because water and food entered where only air should enter.

“I particularly have a young woman who did it and killed her own child, and I have seen more than five cases of others killing their children by forcefully feeding them.’’

According to the paediatrician, even when a mother succeeds in force-feeding her child or grandchild, there is still a risk of the child developing chest infections.

He advises parents to give children what they like eating, arguing that when a child refuses to eat, it means the food is tasteless.

“When the food is tasty to the child, he will eat; no child is force-fed with ice cream or chocolate drinks; it is always tasteless pap, custard and other cereal,’’ he notes, but warns against feeding children with foods containing much sugar.

He also urges mothers to introduce children to family diet early to encourage them to eat.

“If a mother does the right thing by introducing the child gradually to family food, once the child begins to show interest, the child will like what the parents are eating.

“Children copy adults; if anybody is eating, the child will eat, but when you separate the child away from the family food and start feeding the child with some kind of special milk, the child can lose interest in family food,’’ he argues.

Olusola, who describes for-feeding as child abuse, calls for punishment for those engaging in it.

He says governments should come up with laws criminalizing force-feeding.

The doctor urges fathers to take charge of their homes by ensuring that they have control of their wives and other caregivers living with him.

Another paediatrician, Dr Okiemute Olibamoyo of the Department of Paediatrics, College of Medicine, University of Lagos, wants mothers to change the way they prepare baby foods if they find out that their babies are not eating.

According to her, sometimes a child who refuses to eat his mother’s food is eating that same food when prepared by another woman.

“Mothers need to know what their children like best instead of forcing them to eat any food.

“Most times when mothers force-feed their children, fragments of the food end up in the children’s lungs and trigger pneumonia.

“Force feeding a child can lead to the child developing hatred for food. Once a child develops hatred for food, the hatred might lead to eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia,’’ Olibamoyo warns.

She wants mothers to desist from force-feeding babies in order not to kill them or break their jaws or hurt them with the plates used in feeding them.

A mother of two, Mrs Julian Igbo, regrets that she quarrels with her mother-in-law over force-feeding of her children.

“Mama forces pap and tea down the throats of the babies each time they refuse to eat. I get irritated at that and complain but she will tell me that she cannot watch her children starve,’’ she narrates.

According to Igbo, her mother-in-law often turns the babies’ heads down with their legs up, while force-feeding them.

    “I can’t stand the sight.’’

A 61-year-old grandmother, Mr Mary Okunola, who admits force-feeding has helped many children to avoid starvation and malnutrition, is of the opinion that the practice cannot be easily eradicated.

She, however, advises women to be more careful in feeding their babies to avoid suffocation.

Okunola wants mothers to learn from the experience of a nanny reportedly sentenced in the U.S. recently for causing the death of a baby by force-feeding the baby.

Reports say the woman, a 73-year-old Nigerian, caused the death of an eight-month-old baby in Maryland, U.S. by forcing milk down the throat of the baby thereby suffocating the child.

The septuagenarian was found guilty of child abuse and second-degree murder by Prince George’s County Circuit Court which sentenced her to 15 years’ imprisonment for causing the death on Oct. 26, 2016.

The judge said she did not believe the convict was an “evil-intentioned baby slayer”, but expected her to know her actions could result in the death of the child.

  • Six things to do before house hunting

    By Praise Olowe

In order to end up with a great house in a great neighbourhood, there are a couple of things to consider before you begin house hunting. This will help to smoothen out the house hunting process for you.

Before browsing the market for a cosy new home, condo, or apartment, the first question to ask yourself is how long you intend to live there.

Here, six things to keep in mind as you’re house hunting.

    Know the Market a Little

Try to spend some time getting to know the market a little. You should not be completely ignorant about what the house hunting process entails to avoid being cheated. Browse real estate listings, familiarize yourself with the different neighbourhoods you are considering, ask around for recommendations on good real estate agents or consultancies, talk to friends, family and even co-workers to get to know about some of their house hunting knowledge and experiences etc. Try to get as much information as you can about the house hunting process beforehand.

    Find a Good Agent

A good real estate agent or realtor is hard to find, but you are going to have to work to search them out. A good agent is someone who knows the market well, is knowledgeable about the area you are interested in and can point out problems with potential homes. Once you can get a good agent that knows their stuff and is able to get you a great house, it makes the house hunting process much easier. One of the best ways to get a good agent is through recommendations from family and friends. You can also go to trusted real estate consultancies for some help.

    Stick to Your Budget

It’s not enough to just have a budget; you need to be able to stick to it. Consider your monthly cash flow and figure out the amount of money that you can conveniently devote to housing payments (the key word here is conveniently). A general rule to guide you is that the money you set aside monthly for house payments should not be higher than 25 – 30% of your monthly income.

    Choose a Location

Well, this is obvious, however, it’s not just about choosing a location but the factors you consider when choosing this location. Unfortunately, a lot of people are ignorant of the vital factors to consider when searching for a house and end up choosing a great looking house in a terrible location. You should consider if you feel safe in the area (not just if the agent tells you the area is safe). Do your own research about the area, ask around. Consider the traffic situation around the area, especially during rush hour. Also, consider if there is likely going to be noise disturbances from any source that is beyond what you can handle. In addition, take note of how clean and well-kept the neighbourhood is. Are you likely to be dealing with typhoid issues when living there because of the dirty water etc.?

     Insist on a home inspection
Typically, home inspections are conducted after an offer is accepted on the property. While homeowners are expected to mention issues with the house in the disclosure document, new issues may come to light during the inspection. In this case, oftentimes buyers renegotiate their offer, but it is also possible to retract an offer entirely if serious, deal-breaking problems are revealed.

    Have a Sizeable Leftover

You would think many would know this, but there is an alarming number of people that spend almost the entirety of their income on buying or renting a new house. No matter what, this should never be done. Houses need constant maintenance, and even after buying the house there are still one or two unforeseen expenses you might need to make, you, therefore, should avoid putting everything down on a house. Ensure you have a sizeable leftover, that can act as a sort of emergency fund and that can be enough for your general upkeep.

  • Five things you probably didn’t know about Israel, Eurovision

There are so many things about Isreal and Eurovision that a lot of people may not be aware of. Here are five of such things…

    1. Israel’s not in Europe – so why does it take part in Eurovision?

Actually, countries don’t have to be in Europe or the European Union to take part, as eligibility is not determined by geography. Several countries geographically outside Europe have competed, including Israel, Cyprus, Armenia, Australia and Morocco. Others that lie partly in Europe and another continent have also taken part, including Russia, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbijan.

    2. Israel first took part in 1973 and despite coming to the party 17 years after the contest first began, her entry still managed to achieve fourth place, just behind the UK’s Cliff Richard with Power to All Our Friends.

    3. Israel didn’t host the 1980 Eurovision Song Contest – despite winning in 1979! Having just hosted the contest in Jerusalem, Israel declined due to the expense and also because the date coincided with Yom Hashoah, which fell that year on April 19. It was staged instead in the Netherlands.

    4. Israel won in 1978 – but not according to Jordan! Just a month before Eurovision was held in Paris, IDF troops invaded Lebanon in Operation Litani, a military response to the Coastal Road Massacre, in which 38 Israeli civilians, including 13 children, were killed and 71 were wounded by Palestinian terrorists. Following this conflict, Jordanian state broadcaster JRTV refused to show the Israeli entry and instead broadcast pictures of flowers. When it became apparent that Israel would win with A-Ba-Ni-Ba, sung by Izhar Cohen and Alphabeta, JRTV ended the transmission and afterwards Jordanian news outlets announced the winner as Belgium – which actually came second.

    5. Fifth time lucky? A win this year would put Israel on equal footing with the UK, France and Luxembourg, which have each won five times, while Sweden has won six and Ireland an incredible seven times.
